What is the goal of the pilot?

Build teacher capacity to better meet the diverse learning needs of all students

What is the Inclusive Education Planning Tool (IEPT)?

a digital resourceoffers new ways to:• collect• organize, and

• think about information to enhance day-to-day instructional planning

How do teachers use the IEPT?

begins with all students

Involving parents remains an important part of the planning process.

Instructional supports are:a collection of teaching strategies and routines, and learning resource materials that create successful learning experiences for an individual student or a group of students.

• Language Arts

• Medical Conditions/Disabilities

• Social Participation

activate/ build background knowledge

multiple ways to access information vocabulary development reading comprehension strategies writing strategies models and exemplars working with others multiple ways to express learning

The majority of the supports for Languages Arts are applicable across the subject areas.

Language Arts

Create learner profiles to:

•inform classroom planning•share with learning team, including parents.

Planning for all students

At a minimum, teachers will complete a learner profile for all Grade 1 to 9 students who are:

• working below grade level• in need of additional support, and/or• are identified with special education needs.

The learning profile should be completed by the classroom teacher who is most responsible for that student’s instruction.

What about IPPs?

Schools participating in the pilot will not create IPPs for students in this school year.

Kindergarten children identified as having special education needs will require IPPs

The Standards for Special Education remain in effect – all schools not participating in this pilot will complete IPPs for 2011 – 2012.

Will this change how parents participate in their child’s learning?

The Inclusive Education Planning Tool is a teacher resource, so only teachers will have access.

Teachers can generate reports of learner profiles to share with parents

Parent perspectives are important for understanding students’ strengths and needs

There will be opportunities for parents to contribute to profiles

Profiles can be shared and revised at reporting periods (or any other time)

As a participant in the pilot, what arethe obligations of my school authority?

Jurisdictional contact will: liaise with three pilot schoolsparticipate in September orientation

Ensure that participating schools communicate with parents

about the IEPT pilot

Follow Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) polices re: storing and sharing student information

Ensure that each participating schools has a contact person to:

• participate in orientation session• share this information with other teachers

How will Alberta Education support the pilot?

Orientation Sessions:

Grande Prairie September 12 and 13, 2011 (English & French)

Edmonton September 15 and 16, 2011 (English & French)

Calgary September 19 and 20, 2011 (English & French)

Lethbridge September 22 and 23, 2011 (English)

Red Deer September 26 and 27, 2011 (English)

Contacts will receive access to the IEPT as part of the Orientation Session.

Contacts will then distribute access codes to participating schools.

Plan for how you can embed support for inclusive education in professional learning opportunities throughout the school year.

What about schools not in the pilot?

All schools will have access to digital resources:• Inclusive Education Library(after September 30)

• Medical/Disability Information for Classroom Teachers

• Supporting Social Participation• Language Arts Strategy Bank(after November 30)

Many of the professional learning activities that are shared throughout the pilot can be used with all schools .

What happens after 2011-2012?

• New content for mathematics• Explore options for high school• Use pilot results to inform policies and

practices that support inclusive education
