1. She saw that her father was laughing hysterically, but she had no idea why. Was he reading that silly book again?

2. “Get out of my way!” the boy screamed at me. He was barreling toward me as his bike picked up speed as it rushed downhill. “My brakes aren’t working!”

3. Wow, am I ever glad to be home, Tabby thought to himself. He lay on his back and put his feet up in the air. That’s the last time I ever run away, he thought. Now he wondered when his people were going to serve his dinner. If they only knew how hungry an adventurous dog could get.

4. In the school cafeteria, Alexa felt lonely and out of place. She wished she could return to her old school and eat lunch with her friends.

On the other side of the table, Jennifer glanced at the new girl. She wondered if they had much in common. “What’s your name?” Jennifer asked the girl.

5. You are tired. You are hungry. You are lost. You haven’t seen a road (or even a path, for that matter) for six hours. Night is approaching. What are you going to do?

6. “Mom!” I shouted as I opened the door to my house. “Guess what!” “What?” Mom asked. She looked up from the book she was reading. “I got the part of Wendy in the school play!” I told her. “Can you believe it? Practices start tomorrow after school.” “Congratulations!” Mom said. “I knew you could do it!”

7. Ugh! Younger sisters can be so annoying! Jessica thought to herself. She really needed to get her homework done. She just needed Melanie to clean out the dishwasher for her. “Please, Melanie,” Jessica begged. “I’ve helped you out tons of times!”

“No!” Melanie answered. “I have my own chores to do, and I have things to do too, you know.” Older sisters can be sooo bossy, Melanie thought.

8. “What do you want to do on Saturday?” Dad asks when Ben answers the telephone.

How about you move your stuff back home, Ben thinks to himself. He doesn’t say it out loud, though. He doesn’t want to hurt his dad’s feelings. He knows the divorce has been hard on his dad, too. “I don’t care,” Ben says aloud. “I was thinking that we could go to the zoo for the day,” Dad suggests. “Sure, Dad,” Ben answers, “that sounds like fun.”

9. Butterflies flutter about in my stomach. You can do this! I think to myself. Bang! We’re off! I sprint toward the other end of the track. Halfway there, my lungs start to burn. “Go Jake!” my dad shouts. He’s standing next to the fence with his stopwatch, as usual. I cross the finish line right behind the runner wearing red.

10. When Sam and Joe got home from school, they raced for the TV remote. Here we go again, thought Mom. As usual, Sam pushed Joe out of the way and grabbed the remote. She wished they could just get along. She was tired of dealing with this each and every afternoon.

“Mom!” Joe called. “Sam pushed me!” Joe wished he could be older than Sam for just one day. Then he would show Sam how it felt to always get pushed around! “Sam, it’s Joe’s turn to choose the TV program today. You chose yesterday.” Mom said.

3rd Person Limited

The pronouns indicate 3rd person, so I have to keep going down the flow chart. I know what one person – the girl – is thinking. Therefore, the point of view is 3rd person limited.

1st Person

I see a mix of 1st person AND 3rd person pronouns. I know that if there is a mix, I should choose 1st person as the point of view.

3rd Person Limited

The pronouns indicate 3rd person, so I have to keep going down the flow chart. I know what one character – the dog – is thinking. Therefore, the point of view is 3rd person limited.

2nd Person

I only see the pronoun “you”, so I know it has to be 2nd person. I can stop there on the chart.

1st Person

I see a mix of 1st person AND 3rd person pronouns. I know that if there is a mix, I should choose 1st person as the point of view. I can stop there on the chart.

3rd Person Omniscient The pronouns indicate 3rd person, so I have to keep going down the flow chart. I know what two characters are thinking. I know that Alexa is feeling lonely, and I know Jennifer is wondering if she has anything in common with the new student. Therefore, the point of view is 3rd person omniscient.
