Screw• An inclined plane wrapped around a

cylinder.• Allows you to exert your input force over a

longer distance.

• Decreases Input force!!!• Ex: screws, jar lids

Levers• A rigid bar that is free to pivot, or rotate, on a

fixed point.– Fulcrum – Fixed point the lever pivots around.

• 1st class lever – Increases force and changes direction – Ex: Seesaw, pliers

• 2nd class lever – Increases force– Ex: wheelbarrow

• 3rd class lever – Increases distance– Ex: Hockey stick, baseball bat

Wheel and Axle• Two circular objects (wheel) that rotate

around a common axis (axle).–If force is applied to the wheel – Increases force

* Ex: Screwdriver–If force is applied to the axle – Increases

distance* Ex: Axle on a car

Pulley• A grooved wheel with a rope or cable

wrapped around it.• Different types:
