INCAS CITIESADUR S.

The Incas lived in the Andes mountains, in South America.

They weren’t farmers but they were builders. They were ruled by an emperor called the Inca.

CITIES OF STONEThe Incas built huge cities from massive blocks of stone. They used stone hammers to shape the blocks so they would fit together perfectly. The cities had temples, palaces and observatories for watching the stars and the moon.

Machu Picchu is 2,350m above sea level. This is the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu, high up in the Andes mountains.

The Incas built stone roads to link cities. They used reeds (a plant) to build bridges. Teams of runners used the roads to carry messages from city to city.

The roads were also used by farmers taking food to market, soldiers and by traders. Llamas were used for carrying heavy things.

The Incas foods are corn, potatoes, peppers, beans, tomatoes and squash. Women made a drink called “chicha”, typical drink in the Incas cities, by spitting chewed fruit into warm water. Farmers grew food on wide ledges, called terraces, that they made into the mountainside.
