Local strength, global resource

With over 350 partners and more than 1,600 lawyers across the globe, we are organised and resourced to help you, wherever you are in the world.

A strategic merger in May 2012 has brought us closer to our clients globally, giving us two centres in the Middle East (Qatar and Dubai) and four in Asia Pacific. It has also strengthened our comprehensive platform in the UK: we now operate in all three UK jurisdictions and have an expanded network of eight UK offices. We plan to open further offices in continental Europe; this, and our close links with other law firms internationally, means that we are well equipped to handle your multi-jurisdictional matters. In fact, of the 50 or so awards that we have won in the past four years, for everything from innovation to diversity, several have been for our work supporting clients internationally.

But it’s not just about numbers. It’s about focus and organisation too. We’ve created a strong and efficient platform for our expanded firm, focused on four global business sectors of Infrastructure; Energy; Advanced Manufacturing & Technology; and Financial Services; and on a number of core industries and markets. We aim to be market leaders in each of these sectors, by applying not only legal know-how but also, crucially, a high level of sector insight to solve your business problems and help you succeed.

Sector insight is absolutely central to the way we work, and one of the ways we gain it is by spending time with you. Many of our lawyers spend periods of time embedded within our clients’ businesses, learning how you do things and discovering new ways to help you achieve your goals. So when you work with us, you work with lawyers with a good head for business as well as a keen legal brain.

You’ll also be in good company. Over the years we’ve teamed up with almost every major bank, with governments around the world and with many of the world’s leading multi-national companies. Strong links like these can be invaluable when you’re building a team to bring a major deal together.

We do what we can toreduce our own impacton the environmentwe live in

Doing business responsibly

For us, doing business responsibly is structured around our relationships with our people, our clients and our local and global communities.

We do what we can to reduce our own impact on the environment we live in: we’re ISO14001 accredited, carbon neutral and reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible.

Our people are encouraged to give 25 hours a year to voluntary work; we currently contribute over 10,000 hours per year. The focus of our community investment programme, Starfish, is ‘inspiring young lives’.

In our communities we partner with schools local to our offices in the UK and overseas to find out how we can best help. Clients often get involved too. It’s led us to hold workshops and mentor students to improve literacy, numeracy and employability.

We’ve also been involved in a variety of sports and arts-related activities.

Globally we are proud of our partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, the largest charity for orphaned and abandoned children, helping approximately 60,000 around the world. We currently support three villages in China, Zambia and India, supporting children’s schooling and fundraising for new buildings.

Among other projects at home and abroad we provide pro bono legal support for the innovative Horizons Clinic in the Gambia, and are members of the East London Business Alliance which supports regeneration and opportunity for the people of east London.

We are delighted to have been accredited by the Business in the Community Big Tick programme, and to have been recognised in the awards for excellence in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. We also became the Business in the Community National Example of Excellence winner (Bank of America Merrill Lynch Education Award) in 2009. We have also been recognised as a Caring Company by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service.

Finding and supportingthe best peopleWe do everything we can to get hold of the best people at Pinsent Masons. And we work very hard to empower them to be their best.

To help achieve this, we mentor students who want to work in law but don’t have the connections. As a result of our efforts, we have won awards for diversity and been asked to help our clients with their programmes. We’ve been on Stonewall’s workplace equality index for four years and we won an award for our work placement diversity initiative last year.

We are also one of the founding members of PRIME, a commitment from law firms to provide fair access to quality work experience for young people from less advantaged backgrounds, giving them insight into the range of careers available in the legal profession and potential routes into those careers.

Pinsent Masons is committed to investing in the skills and talents of its people, and this is a very important part of our business strategy. We begin by looking at the present and future business objectives of the firm. The Learning team then works closely with the practice and support heads to define performance needs.

In a typical year, there will be over 50 different development workshops covering business areas like Business Development, Project Management, Management and Leadership and Business Acumen. In addition to all the development learning we offer, every practice group and support team offers training courses focused on the specific technical requirements of that area. We give our senior leaders Business School training and hold offsite development conferences for our lawyers, which are hard work, but great fun.

As an SRA accredited learning provider, all our courses are CPD accredited, making SRA CPD requirements easy to manage.

We work hard to eliminate barriers to development. We also allot hours to our people for coaching and so that they can spend time volunteering. It helps them become rounded human beings, learning client management, negotiation and leadership.

An emphasis on openness and co-operation runs through the firm.
