The Ashby House in Salina has been empowering homeless families and individuals to improve self-sufficiency, self-advocacy, and holistic recovery for 25 years. Last week, I had the privilege of meeting the director and touring the facilities along with Jaren and Dan Newman and Pat Murray. What an exceptional ministry and outreach is occurring in the heart of Salina. The home pictured is a “new” facility that was moved into place last July. It has been completely gutted and is ready for new everything. The current facility, a two-story house with four upstairs bedrooms and only one bathroom, isn’t sufficient for the number of people being housed. The new shelter, when completed, will have about seven bedrooms and four bathrooms, a full kitchen, a handicapped-accessible bedroom and bathroom, plus space to host training and offices for case management. Individuals living in the emergency shelter receive case management services, along with life skills, workforce and parenting skills training. The Advent Offering for 2019 will be directed to equipping the kitchen in the new facility, directly impacting lives of families who find themselves homeless and in need of care. More information will be coming in the next several weeks as we work together to transform lives in the Salina community.

Lori’s Lines

Page 2

The Byrds have a song called “Turn, Turn, Turn”. The lyrics are based on scripture from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. It starts like this: To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time to every purpose, under heaven.

A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time to every purpose, under heaven.

A time to build up, a time to break down A time to dance, a time to mourn A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together...

For my family these lyrics ring true. On Sept 21, we lost David’s dad, Marvin. On Oct 30, we lost David’s mom, Jean. (They are pictured in the middle of this Christmas family photo from 2016.) The time to mourn for us is now. There definitely is a big hole in our family and our hearts without them. Luckily, our Christian faith is helping us get through our grief. We know that eventually we will be reunited with all our loved ones when we come face to face with our Lord. As Christians we don’t say “good-bye,” we say “see you later.”

We want to say thank you to our Trinity Family for all your prayers, cards, and support. Sincerely, Pastor Lori, David, Paul & Emma

Inclusiveness Info

As the Inclusiveness Committee discussed ways we could be welcoming and helpful in LGBTQ matters, I mentioned that we have a parent support group for families who are finding out that they have family members who are coming out in one of those identifications. We don’t meet on a regular schedule but are available when there is a need. These are parents who can listen to the concerns of other families and are willing to share their journeys through this issue. There is no judgement as to where people should be in their process and it is completely confidential. If you are in need of support or know someone else who does call Dale or Beverly Cole 825-0402.

Sock-it-to-Salina 2019

Trinity is serving as a collection site for socks of any kind during November. Salina Shares will be distributing them to anyone who needs them in December. We are one of 20 collections sites. The basket will be in the Hallway outside of the church office. If you are inclined, bring a pair to share.

Grateful for Luggage

108 pieces of "luggage" was delivered to St Francis Ministries to be used by children who are in foster care. Thank you for recycling the great pieces, large and small. Something nice and secure in which to transport ones belongings, often in a crisis, gives a small amount of control in a difficult situation. (additional donations can be put in the Mission Closet for a later delivery.) Thank you.

Trinity’s Thanksgiving Offering

We are showing our Thankfulness by bringing nonperishable food items to church through 11-24 as an offering. Bring them either to the Sanctuary or Family Life Center. Suggested food items include stuffing mix, turkey gravy, jell-o & jelly, canned green beans, mushroom soup, french onions, pumpkin pie filling, pie crust mix, cranberry sauce, cake mix and frosting, and the always needed paper goods, laundry soap, tooth paste, salt and pepper. These food items will be donated to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank.

Salina Rescue Mission Needs for November

Alcohol free cold and flu medicine, cough drops and for Christmas planning, men's white t-shirts and briefs, gloves and stocking hats.

Place them in the Mission Closet in the Hallway by the Nursery.

ALTAR FLOWERS SIGN-UP ON BULLETIN BOARD ($25) located outside the sanctuary (you may take flowers home after 11:00 am service)

there will be an identical presentation on January 12th.

Sunday School Hanging of the

Greens, November 24 • Hanging of the Greens begins with people of all ages helping around the building at 4:00pm, November 24. From 4:30-6:00pm 2 year olds – 5th grade will go to their classrooms to help decorate the room or make Christ-mas Crafts. Sunday School teachers will pre-pare an activity that will help your child fo-cus on the true meaning of Christmas: the love God has shown us through the birth of Jesus. Every student will also make a Ginger-bread Nativity Scene to take home. At 6:00pm everyone is invited to participate in the Chili Cook off. For a donation, each per-son becomes a taster and a judge of what the best chili in the room is. Don’t miss the fun! All donations go to the Youth ministry at Trinity UMC.

Worship Hearing Assistance The hearing assisted receivers are working quite well. There are two different types: 1) The loop receiver utilizes the t-coil in the person’s hearing assisted device and 2) the “Ear” only utilizes the earpiece or headphone. The sanctuary receivers are at the south door entrance. The Family Life Center (FLC) receivers are on the Welcome Center table. The receivers for the sanctuary and Family Life Center are identical. There are brief instruction cards on the tables. If you don’t know if you have a t-coil or how to enable the t-coil, choose the “Ear” receiver with an earpiece or headphone. Securely plug in the earpiece or headphone. The on/off and volume is on the dial on top of the receiver. Choose the “Loop” receiver if you know you can enable your t-coil in your

hearing aids or cochlear implant. (If you aren’t sure the “Loop” will work take an earpiece or headphone that can be used with the loop.) The receiver is automatically on. The wire loop can be placed around your neck and plugged into the receiver. Enable your t-coil and adjust the volume on the loop receiver by using the up and down arrows. If the t-coil does not work unplug the wire loop and use an ear-piece or headphone. Contact Keith ([email protected] – 785.823.0243) for any assistance. He will be glad to work with you and hearing aid provider, if needed.
