There’s lots going on here at the UW-Madison DPT Program. First of all, we have begun our self-study in preparation for our CAPTE site visit in October 2020. In the meantime, new developments have included the approval of a DPT/MPH joint degree! We will also soon be able to offer our students a Certificate in Global Health. Other positive developments are increased involvement in the Center of Interprofessional Education (CIPE), with our students participating in multiple interprofessional activities with medical, physician assistant, nursing, pharmacy, and students from multiple other programs. To ensure that the recent tuition increase went right back to the students, we have instituted a Professional Dues and Engagement Scholarship Program. Students are required to join the APTA upon matriculation; however, the Program will subsidize their memberships during their second year, and DPTSO will do the same for qualifying members during the students’ third year. In addition, the DPT Program will subsidize one conference during each student’s three years in the Program. Another major initiative that was driven by second-year student, Julia Schlosser, is to earn our Green Office Certification (Julia is also planning to attain a Certificate in Global Health and apply to the DPT/MPH Program), which involves a series of orientations through the Office of Sustainability, along with recycling education and composting. One of the best parts of this job is that I can count on our students to make sure we are always moving forward! I would also like to recognize all those people from outside our Program, whether they are alumni (thank you, Alumni Coalition!) or not (for example, Jen Doster!), who help us accomplish endeavors and events such as the global health trips and the CSM alumni reunion-we could not engage in all we do without you! A Message from the Program Director

Lisa Steinkamp, PT, PhD, MBAHello Alumni and Friends!

Other positive developments are increased involvement in the Center of Interprofessional Education (CIPE), with our students participating in multiple interprofessional activities with

medical, physician assistant, nursing, pharmacy, and students from multiple other programs.

On, Wisconsin!

kDoctor of Physical Therapy Student Organization (DPTSO)2018-2019 was another successful year for the UW-Madison Doctor of Physical Therapy Student Organization (DPTSO). Members were active through multiple volunteer opportunities, educational intervention nights, and fundraising efforts. Some of these volunteer opportunities included Spinal Cord Injury Group for adaptive kayaking, Badger Honor Flight teams, MEDiC clinics, Pro Bono Clinic, Special Olympics, Ballroom Basics for Balance, ADEPT, and WPTA Student SIG.

Fundraising began with the second annual Physical Therapy Golf Outing at Yahara this past fall, which raised over $2600 for our program! The traditional massage fundraiser and Bucky’s Race for Rehab were continued this past spring. A big thank you to everyone who came out for Bucky’s Race – we had over 75 runners and raised over $2000!

A new event was made possible with the help of Dr. Wenker, the Advanced Credentialed Exercise Expert for the Aging Adult course. Through these fundraising efforts, we were able to help send our students to experience professional development opportunities such as the WPTA fall and spring conferences, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting (CSM), and global health trips to Belize, Peru, and Guatemala.

Additionally, we were able to give financial support to the Badger Honor Flight and ADEPT organization members, as well as subsidize third-year APTA membership dues.

Traditional social events DPTSO put on this year included the first- and second-year class bonding at the Brewers game, the holiday party at the Monona Terrace, the third-year send off at the Nitty Gritty, and the Bucks Sports Medicine night.

A big thank you to the outgoing DPTSO board: Shasta Fleming (Vice President), Moriah Morgan (Treasurer), Macy Bolt (Secretary), and Deandra Elcock (Personal Relations)! Additionally, thank you to both classes and faculty and staff for making all we accomplished this year possible. Good luck to the 2019-2020 DPTSO board!

n Natalie Blonien, PT, DPTI am entering my second year of teaching as a faculty associate and greatly enjoy coordinating the pediatric content for the neuro tract and for orthotic application in the second year of coursework. I also coordinate the Program’s integument course for PT3s in their last group of classes before they head out to clinical internships. I am expanding my clinical practice by joining a multi-disciplinary pediatric clinic at the UW Health American Family Children’s Hospital that provides services to children with neuromuscular diseases and their families. In my service role, I continue as a faculty advisor in our Pro-Bono clinic. I am also serving as a faculty liaison to the Waisman Center for the MCH LEND program in which our PT2s participate. I look forward to continuing the GoBabyGo program that was started by Karen Patterson. Please continue to follow our build events on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/UWGoBabyGo. I look forward to expanding my research knowledge and opportunities by starting a Capstone certificate in clinical and community outcomes research this fall at the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, where I hope to focus on supporting care coordination for children with special health needs and their families.

n Colleen Cobey, PT, MS, Ex PhysMy teaching appointment involves being the link between all three first-year semesters, with PT 501 Anatomical Applications in the summer, PT 527 Foundations of Examination and Evaluation in the fall, and PT 534 Therapeutic Interventions in the spring. In PT 527, we continue to utilize a Simulation (SIM) Center to provide a realistic inpatient experience for the students prior to their first clinical experience. Working in pairs, students perform a bedside assessment on a high-fidelity manikin capable of verbally communicating and demonstrating fluctuating physiologic responses. Following this experience, the students return to the simulation center for their final practical, which is performed with a standardized patient. I also provide physical therapy services throughout the year at University Health Services (UHS), which serves the students at UW as well as visiting faculty and their families. As part of my community service, I am involved with

the Stepping On program and a community food pantry garden which provides fresh food to two local food pantries, as well as Chrysalis, which promotes mental health recovery by supporting work opportunities. I have also been involved as a CPR instructor and with Reenie Euhardy, we now offer CPR certification training for our students and faculty in all three academic semesters. I am participating in TeachOnline@UW, which is a learning community that helps UW-Madison instructors explore and implement research-based online course design and teaching best practices.

n Daniel Cobian, PT, PhDI am grateful for the ongoing opportunity to assume multiple roles as a scientist, clinician, and educator, a mix that I always hoped would define my career in physical therapy. My time is divided between instruction primarily within the 1st year DPT curriculum, clinical physical therapy in Sports Rehabilitation at The American Center, and consultation and research activities as a member of the Badger Athletic Performance Laboratory.

I continue to participate in collaborative research initiatives as a co-investigator on funded proposals to assess hamstring strain injury risk factors and outcomes in elite athletes and to validate a protocol to quantify musculotendon function in people with chronic tendinopathy. In the previous calendar year, I teamed with UW Health colleagues to present an educational session on neurocognitive and motor control strategies in ACL rehabilitation at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM), and was an invited speaker at the Motor Control Symposium hosted by the International Society of Biomechanics. I also presented research at CSM in Washington, DC, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL, and at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY.

I actively mentor undergraduate and graduate students who participate in the research initiatives of the Badger Athletic Performance lab. Students working under my direction contributed to and presented research at APTA and ACSM conferences. Seeing mentored students develop clinical research skills and make meaningful contributions to the knowledge base in our field is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my job.

I look forward to contributing to the didactic and clinical education of our most recent matriculating class of DPT students, along with continuing to expand my research agenda to assist our profession in understanding the neuromuscular implications of musculoskeletal trauma and how to best prescribe and dose rehabilitation interventions to facilitate improved outcomes and long-term quality of life.

This year, I am also excited to assume a developing role with the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy (AASPT), as a research coordinator and abstract reviewer.

n Jeanne Duncan, PT, DPT, DCEIn my role as the Director of Clinical Education, I continue to enjoy the variety of opportunities that have presented themselves to me as I grow and adapt the clinical education program here at UW-Madison to the ever-changing world of health care. Over the past two years, Dr. Susan Wenker and Jane Stroede, PTA, Madison College, and I have traveled around the state to provide free ethics courses to area facilities that take our students. It’s been nice to finally put faces with all the names I see throughout the year. We were also invited to present a second version of the blended ethics course at the WPTA Spring Conference in La Crosse, WI. Additionally we are currently developing a blended online inter-professional ethics course that should be available by early fall. I continue to co-teach the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) with Dr. Wenker on a yearly basis. As an active member of the WPTA Clinical Education SIG, we have been working on development of future continuing education courses for Site Coordinators of Clinical Education (SCCE) and Clinical Instructors (CI).

Along with Jim Carlson, MPT, CCS (Class of 1999) and mentor of the VA Cardiopulmonary Residency Program, I coordinate and co-teach PT 523: Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Aspects of Physical Therapy in the second year of the curriculum. Lastly, to round out my role, I provide PT services at University Health Services (UHS), which allows me to keep my skills and knowledge up-to-date.

kClinical Education Corner I would first like to thank ALL of you who have offered the Program clinical internship placements for 2020 and for taking students in 2019! We are currently selecting for placements and you should be notified if a student has been matched to your facility in the early fall. With an ever-changing healthcare environment and

expectations, we continue to hear reports of increased burdens on staff and clinical instructors emerge and therefore we are extremely grateful for your continued partnership with the UW-Madison DPT program.

Clinical education is a vital component of entry-level PT education and the future of our profession. Your role as a clinical instructor is necessary and equally as important for the success of our students as we know it is in the clinic where theory meets reality. If you are interested in becoming a facility partner or would like more information on it, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. There is always a need for high quality placements across the board, but offerings in Acute Care locations continue to decline along with offerings for the short two- and four-week internships that occur during the first and second years of the Program.

As a small token of our gratitude, Dr. Susan Wenker and I are creating a FREE four-hour online/blended learning inter-professional ethics course that will be available to those facilities that take our students. Please watch for further communication regarding access to this course in the upcoming months.

We have continued to monitor our recent curricular changes and continue to receive feedback from both clinicians and students that has been positive. Clinicians feel the longer internship have allowed the students to master skills and reach entry-level. Additionally, students and clinicians feel that having all clinical education experiences completed prior to the early NPTE Test date has allowed them to remain focused in the clinic environment and provide two weeks of dedicated study time prior to taking the Boards exam in April. Once again, a very sincere “thank you” to all of you who have offered placements and have educated our DPT students throughout the year. We appreciate all that you do for them and the Program. Without your partnership, our Program would certainly not be as successful!

n Evan Nelson, PT, DPT, OCSFor many years, I have been working with Dr. Heiderscheit to develop a new patient-reported outcome measure of running ability following running-related injury. To assess the psychometric properties, I led a multicenter study of the University of Wisconsin Running Injury & Recovery Index (UWRI) showing the UWRI is responsive to the changes in running ability that result from PT care. This work is significant because it shows recovery from running-related injuries is a multifactorial process that is not properly assessed by many common outcome measures. The results of the project are currently in publication in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy with addition publications expected in the future.

Components of this work are being presented at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting and Wisconsin Physical Therapy Association Fall Conference. Working with Kendra Harris, a UW Health/UnityPoint Health-Meriter Orthopedic Residency alumnus, provided the opportunity to publish a very unique musculoskeletal imaging case showing the importance of medical screening, even in referred patients, in the June 2019 issue of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Diagnostic imaging is a growing component of physical therapy practice in Wisconsin and across the nation. I am involved with a number of state and national initiatives to provide individuals, and organizations, the requisite knowledge to implement x-ray imaging in routine practice.

Evan Nelson, PT, DPT, OCS presents his research at Medical Education Day, School of Medicine and Public Health.

n Karen Patterson, PT, MS, PCSIt is with bittersweet sentiment that I announce I will be retiring this upcoming fall. I will miss all the great opportunities given to me as a member of this dynamic Program. I have truly enjoyed working with and learning from my colleagues during my time here.

2018-19 Global Health HighlightsJennifer Gudea, SPT completed a UW Global Health Certificate, including a field study portion in the Toledo district of Belize.

Thank you to WPTA for awarding our students a Charitable Activities Grant to assist with the cost of their global trips.

Twenty UW-Madison DPT2 students participated in international global health service learning projects; the following is a summary of the projects.

Belize: For the last ten years, UW-Madison DPT students have been partnering with the Belize Ministry of Education and Hillside International Clinic to conduct a disability education program in rural schools throughout the Toledo District in the southern part of the country. This year, seven second-year students joined UW faculty member Colleen Cobey and volunteer faculty member Jennifer Doster to expand the program to older-aged children and begin the process of having local teachers conduct the program. The following students participated: Shasta Fleming, Stephanie Grobe, Jeffrey Jaeggi, Brennen Jaquint, Erin Nelson, Kayla Rymer, and Mikaela Schwantz.

Peru: For the second year, the UW-Madison DPT Program has partnered with Manos Unidas in Cusco, Peru to help develop motor, activity and positioning programs for the children with disabilities who attend Camino Nuevo School. This year, Madison students also engaged with local PT students to share knowledge and engage in case presentations. Once again, we were thankful to have UW-Madison PT alumni Carrie DeNiel (Class of 2013) and Janelle Burnham (Class of 2013) lead this project. Second-year DPT students who participated in this project included: Joe Burkeland, Matt Christensen, Fernando Espinosa, Jesse Kroll, Zach Lentini, Nikko Manning, Rachel McDonald, Nicole Pihl, and Austin Sturdivant.

Guatemala: Four second-year UW-Madison DPT students participated in an interdisciplinary project with UW medical and pharmacy students in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. The project was led by UW School of Medicine and Public Health faculty and UW-Madison alumnus Janet Frenz (Bernstein-Class of 1971). This project involved staffing medical mobile units for rural villages and home visits with local health promotors. Students who participated in this project were Mali Gaber, Jennifer Hornbaker, Caroline Klinker and Laurel Kornblau.

n Amy Schubert, PT, DPT, Director of AdmissonsIt has been a busy year getting settled into my role as Director of Admissions. I was reminded of how steep the learning curve can be in a new environment, but how rewarding it is to learn new things! My role focuses primarily on recruitment of students particularly who are underrepresented in medicine (which we are learning needs to begin very early on - in the middle and high school years), including numerous health care career panels/events and hosting students from various pathways programs; meeting with prospective students interested in our Program (as well as serving as Advisor for the Pre-PT Club undergraduate student organization on campus); and ensuring that the overall admissions process runs smoothly.

During the spring semester, I co-instructed in PT512: Principles of Professional Practice and Administration. It was really enjoyable to have interactions with DPT2 students currently in the Program and I am looking forward to it again next year. Beginning this fall, I will hold clinic at UHS which will help keep my clinical skills/knowledge

up-to-date, and hopefully help boost my credibility as a PT when talking with prospective students! Our 2019-20 admissions cycle opens July 3rd, and I am looking forward to round two!

n Mary Sesto, PT, PhDResearch conducted in Dr. Sesto’s lab focuses on the use of health information technologies to improve health outcomes in individuals with chronic diseases and disabilities. Dr. Sesto recently presented at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on Sustaining an Effective and Resilient Oncology Careforce. Research from her laboratory has also been presented at the Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Meeting and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Conference. She serves as core faculty in the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center and the Wisconsin Institute for Health Systems Engineering.

n Jill Thein-Nissenbaum, PT, DSc, SCS, ATCI continue to teach in the musculoskeletal courses for the second-year DPT students. This is my 22nd year teaching in the Program! In addition, I am starting my 11th season with Badger Sportsmedicine and UW Athletics, providing care for the injured UW athletes. I work closely with the athletic trainers and physicians to provide physical therapy services for athletes from all 23 sports. I see athletes with a wide variety of injuries, mostly chronic in nature, and provide postoperative care for the athletes as needed.

I was recently elected as the Treasurer of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy, and will begin my duties in June 2019. I want to thank Bryan Heiderscheit, PT, PhD for his six years of service to the Academy as Treasurer, and for encouraging me to take on this leadership role. Most recently, I have been collaborating with some of the athletic trainers in Badger Sportsmedicine (UW Athletics) to provide educational presentations and injury prevention programs. Alyson Kelsey, MA, LAT and I have given three lectures and/or lab-based educational

Christine Koth (Misora) (1999) just-launched her first book, Tight Hip, Twisted Core - The Key to Unresolved Pain. She focuses on the role of the iliacus, a muscle often lumped in with the psoas but deserves its own attention. After years of discovering hidden tightness in this muscle and its connection to dysfunction in the hip, sacroiliac joint, spine, and down to the foot, her mission is to help practitioners and patients alike to understand the role of the iliacus and how to keep it happy. With all the sitting, hypermobile activities, and overuse sports that are at the root of this tightness, so many of us are affected by this muscle and don't even know it! Not only is her book available on Amazon, but she also invented the world's first muscle release tool designed specifically for the iliacus muscle. The Hip Hook will be going to Kickstarter in October with manufacturing soon to follow. You can get the first chapter of the book and learn more about the Hip Hook at her website, christinekoth.com.
