Over 1,200 participants from New York to Tokyo and from London to Cape Town attended the free sessions and became connected with colleagues. The IBCT Middle East division organized “The HRD Series”. the IBCT recently renewed the website to a much more

modern and stylish-looking appearance.

The new website is more easily accessible and more

user-friendly. With the integration of social media like

LinkedIn, YouTube and Facebook, the IBCT is creating

better exposure to the market. The board is encouraging

trainers to make use of these tools and to connect via the

new media to other trainers and experts, share ideas,

opportunities and know-how. There is even a group on

LinkedIn only for IBCT members.

Another major change is online application. Candidates all

over the world can now apply online for their certification.

The complete approach is changed and has become

friendlier for the customers. The applicant is in the center

and in 3-5 minutes, the whole certification process is started.

In front of you is the IBCT winter newsletter 2013. As

the chairman of the foundation, I am proud that last year

we welcomed hundreds of new trainers from all over

the world. IBCT board members consulted professional

associations and supported them growing the quality

awareness in training and workplace learning and

development. We launched a new website with a fresh

look, web-application and online payment options. In

2012, we sponsored 50 free web seminars about training

and adult learning. Over 1,200 participants from New

York to Tokyo and from London to Cape Town attended

the free sessions and became connected with colleagues.

The IBCT Middle East division organized “The HRD

Series”. Multiple seminars in Cairo were conducted by

famous professors and frequently-asked trainers. Our

resume, evaluation results and submit a personal development plan. After

completing the application, the applicants can pay online.

The whole process is completed within 2 weeks. There are three possible

levels of certification:

• Associate Trainer (AT)

• Certified Professional Trainer (CPT)

• Certified Trainer/HRD Consultant (CT/HRDC)

With the increasing amount of trainers being certified last year, we will

update an improved search engine in the directory in 2013. This will enable

visitors to search more efficiently in the directory.

WebinarsCertify your webinar for free

Recently the board decided to start certify web seminar or

so called webinars as well. The board will start soon with

the certification of webinars on a global scale. We are

currently searching for webinars for pilot audits. During

this pilot process, we will fine-tune the criteria and

procedures. If a webinar is approved, one may use the

quality seal / hallmark on all public relations and

promotions for a period of three years. Certified webinar

will also be listed in a new directory on the website.

Certifications are now temporary for free for IBCT

members. We are looking forward to certify your webinar.

New book: Facilitating Change The book ‘Facilitating Change’ – using interactive methods in organizations, communities and networks is edited by Lauge Baungaard Rasmussen. It is divided in three parts and includes 15 chapters in all. First part is about paradigms, epistemology and ethics. Part two presents 11 different interactive methods including their main idea, origins, practical examples as well as strengths and weaknesses. The chapter “Interactive SWOT methodology” is from the author Luc V. Zwaenepoel PhD, CT/HRDC a frequently asked senior trainer and facilitator and member of the International Board of Certified Trainers. Part three is about how to understand and facilitate creative processes and thus to help the reader to improve his/her abilities to use the interactive methods in participatory approaches.

As a preface to this article, it is important to

consider the following: every trainer or professional

involved at any level with Corporate Training, must

be aware of the fact that with our job, we respond to

multiple corporate needs that sometimes do not

overlap. I refer, for example, to Corporate Business

Goals and Individual Learning Needs. An

experienced trainer knows and an inexperienced

one will soon discover, that our job puts us right in

the middle of these two positions and from there we

must find a way to shorten every possible distance.

I am a professional living and working in Italy in

the field of Corporate Language Training. I am

working in environments where Corporate Staff is

willing to learn more and more (and to do any

sacrifice required to keep its place of work) and

companies’ budgets are shrinking ceaselessly,

simply because money seems to have disappeared.

With such a preface when you start designing a new

corporate training program, you ask yourself always

the same question: Where can we go from here?

Let me tell you of a recent case of ours:

We have been asked recently to design corporate language training

programs for an Italian Chain of Campings whose international

clients come from Central and Northern Europe. The SCOPE was

to prepare the staff to welcome and to interact with the clients in

their own language, in order to make them feel at home. After the

initial NEEDS ANALYSIS, we found out that the learners had no

basic competences in the chosen languages and that they were

dispersed all over the country. The BUDGET and the TIME given, together with the need to gather the staff in one single

place, led us to DESIGN intensive training programs with staff

grouped into similar classes. Language training, for its nature,

requires extensive studying, but in this case it was not possible, so

we DEVELOPED intensive training sessions.

With the help of the right training methodology and the right

media and instruments, we have been able to deliver some

excellent, although fatiguing, full-day training sessions. In order to

help the participants remember what they had learned so

intensively, we tried to find a creative solution and decided to give

everyone a JOB AID that we called ‘jobbie’. A pocket-size

memory cardboard that they can take with them to work and use

immediately when needed. We know it will help them to activate

the memory chain when they will read it again next summer.

What we have learned from this experience is that professional

standards together with creativity can help us and our clients to

always find a way to arrive at a solution which is satisfactory for

everyone involved in the corporate training process.

In my college days, I have not come up with a question to myself. It was something I have

figured out over the years and some people might be able to relate to this. – What job do I really

want and see myself grow old with it? Training is my answer.

Learning is not limited to the four corners of the classroom. We often as students could not wait to get out of the

university or college. We hated going to school and were lazy in doing our homework so that we dreamed of the

day that we went to work, made our own living, bought things that we wanted and partied everyday! Well, all those

things I have just mentioned will definitely last, but learning will stay.

I have been working for 15 years. I was one of the few lucky ones who got a job right after college and since then,

I have not stopped working. I started my career in design. I partially completed degrees in engineering and

architecture and completed an english major. Confused of what profession I really wanted and interested in, I

stayed in the print and media for a while and rose up to the position of manager. I was engaged in many aspects of

work; estimation, documentation, logistics, import and export, retail, etc. One day, my boss asked me to help him

find people we need in the retail area. You cannot say "no" to bosses and so I did. After these individuals were

identified and boarded the company, my boss asked me if we could train them. This is how I started and have been

into training for the last five years and into self-learning as well.

Now, as part of the training and development team, I have trained more than 500 staff, counting senior and junior

alike. At first observation, the process looked pretty simple; having the presentation and reading what was in it.

Simple, but going through it comes the challenge. Presentation requires preparation of content and delivery requires

skills and abilities. The goal is for your audience to understand the subject and be able to apply their new learning.

Having developed these skills and abilities requires up to date knowledge and constant recertification. The demand

of certified trainers has gone up over the years and varied in terms of aspect and expertise. The construction

industry requires health and safety, therefore, employees need to be trained before going to the project site to make

them aware of the safety procedures to follow, such as wearing personal protective equipment and avoiding

accidents and fatalities. Each company, for this matter, requires a training and development team to cater to the

needs of all employees who need to be trained in their line of expertise to meet the company goals and objectives.

Humans like routine!! It is nice when

things go “according to the plan”. We like

our coffee in a certain way, we write our

emails the same way every day, we go to

the same places we used to go to, we wear

the same brand of perfumes, and we buy

clothes of the same designer. Such habits

slip below the level of our consciousness

and make us feel “comfortable”. At that

time, we live in what is called the “comfort

zone”. The comfort zone represents the

routine, mediocre life, survival, things we

used to do, working without stress and of

course, fears of failure.

Like coral reef, habits start off small and

flexible and end up building massive solid

rock barriers all around our minds. Inside the

reef “barrier” we feel warm and safe, but our

minds manifest danger and sharks in the

“open” waters. We like what we know, but

fear what we don’t, so our minds invent

monsters and scary beasts out there to keep us

inside the “barrier”.

Comfort zones exist in every area of our lives and we believe it protects us from possible

dangers and risks that may threaten our current level of comfort – even if the thing that

threatens our comfort zone is success and happiness.

Unfortunately, while trying to avoid making mistakes and taking risks, we miss out on most

opportunities as well. Comfort zones are directly related to our dreams or goals that change

over time. The key is to be aware of them and examine which comfort zones may not be

serving our goals or preventing us from creating change.

Don't you wish that you could do a little better, spend a little less time doing what you used to

do? In order to grow and change, we must first be discontent from our current comfort zone

going to the “discomfort zone”. Learning takes place when people step out of their “comfort

zone” into their “discomfort zone”, because that’s where real personal growth takes place.

Sometimes you need a little help to get out of your comfort zone and that is exactly what

training does with you. Training is your “sailing boat” to the borders beyond your comfort

zone. It “sails” you away to the borders conquering new land. Training aims in the acquisition

of knowledge, sharpening of skills, and changing of attitudes and behaviors to help you do

different things and do things differently. It helps you stretch your abilities to perform at the

discomfort zone, but with “comfort”. Thus, your comfort zone will expand at the expense of

your discomfort one. Now, you would have a bigger comfort zone with new habits, new

knowledge, new things you can do, and definitely new mastered skills.

The mission of the NCFLD, a branch of the IBCT, truly reflects such a concept. The NCFLD

presents second-to-none opportunities for your personal development, shows you new

horizons and definitely motivates you to sail away from your comfort zone. At the NCFLD,

we promise that you will come as you are and leave “different”.

It is time to take your “sailing boat” and sail away to new land!!

In the State of the Industry Report 2012, the American Society for Training &

Development published that organizations in the United States continue to invest in

organizational learning and development. In 2011, organizations spent approximately

$156.2 billion as direct expenditure on employee learning and development. This figure

is a decrease of 4% compared with 2010. However, when we look at the amount that

was invested in learning and development as compared to payroll, it showed a

continuously strong commitment to learning. Direct expenditures as a percent of the

payroll remained increasing to 3.2% in 2011 from 2.7% in 2010. This represents a 16%

increase.

The resulting report is concluding that there is a stable environment in the corporate

training industry and a clear recognition from senior leaders that learning and

development is strategically important as they showed by their willingness to seed in

training and to personally participate in it.

Squeeze Extra YieldWithin the Board of the IBCT, we think that extra yield can be squeezed out of training

if training providers and their clients align their trainers, managers and participants to

connect learning better with the workplace, the learner’s ambitions and the

organizational goals. Research and results in the past demonstrated clearly that a

balanced approach will create a greater return on investment for all that are involved in

training. According to our experts, success in 2013 can be achieved if we offer training

anywhere, anytime in this hyper-connected globalizing world, in any culture at the

speed of our client’s business
