Transcript of In this Module, requirements of rainfall in terms of providing the moisture, and temperature for the...
In this Module, requirements of rainfall in terms of providing the moisture, and temperature for the following 6 crops are briefly explained.
• Millets (Sorghum, Pearl Millet, etc.)• Groundnut• Pigeonpea• Chickpea• Maize• Rice

Module V: Climatic Requirements of Some Crops
After successful completion of this Module, you have learned to answer the following questions for each of the 6 crops discussed in this Module:
1. How much of rainfall is required to provide sufficient moisture for good growth and
yield of these crops?
2. What are the critical stages of growth of these crops to rainfall (moisture)?
3. What temperature conditions are suitable for different growth stages of these crops?

Module V: Climatic Requirements of Some Crops
After successful completion of this Lesson, you
have learned to answer:
1. How much of rainfall is required to provide sufficient moisture for good growth and yield of Rice crop?
2. What are the critical stages of growth of Rice crop when rainfall (moisture) is important?
3. What temperature conditions are suitable at different growth stages of Rice crop?

Module V: Climatic Requirements of Some Crops
Water relations:
• Stands water logged conditions;
• Grown as low-land crop with standing water as well as upland crop under rainfed conditions;
• 200 mm of monthly rainfall for lowland rice and 100 mm for upland rice;
• Requires a rainfall of 125 cm during vegetative stage;
• No standing water at ripening stage;
• Best suited for regions with assured water supply.

Module V: Climatic Requirements of Some Crops
Temperature:
• Need hot and humid climate;
• Best suited for the regions having high humidity, prolonged sunshine;
• Mean temperature around 22oC through out growing period;
• Tolerates day temperature up to 40oC;
• Minimum of 10oC for sprouting;
• Optimum of 22 to 23oC for flowering and 20 to 21oC for grain formation;
• Above 22oC respiration is accelerated and grain filling period is reduced.
This concludes Lesson 6: Climatic Requirements of Rice crop, and also this Module.
To assess your understanding of climatic requirements of the crops you have reviewed, please click on “Exercise” button in Module V contents.
In the next Module, you will learn briefly about weather forecasting.
