INSTALLATION

The Installation of Officers for Cotner Lodge was held on Sun., Jan. 22. The installation was well attended and we were pleased to have Bethel 63 perform the Living Cross ceremony. W.B. Steve Green presented the lodge with their 71st consecutive proficiency certificate for 2012. A Cotner tradition is to become proficient for the coming year prior to the installation of officers. Recent changes by the Grand Lodge allowed us to close the lodge in proper form with the public present. Many friends and family commented that they enjoyed sharing in the closing ceremony with the lodge. Thank You to W.B. Val Ryckman and the past masters who have preceded him for their leadership over the years. The 2012

officers are grateful for the chance to server Cotner Lodge for this year.

GRAND LODGECOMMUNICATION

W.M. Greg Mason, S.W. Don Gray, and J.W. Jerry Pigsley were the voting representatives for the lodge at this year’s annual communication. The conference center in Kearney was very impressive and was an excellent location for the event. Cotner Lodge was awarded the Large-Lodge Rock Maul Award for 2011. Other awards received were: The Plus Club Award, for positive membership growth; Two Change for the Troops Top Ten Awards, for Total Per Capita Raised and Total Amount Raised; The Pillar Award; The Membership Award for Large Lodges. Individual Awards were: 2011 Recruitment Awards for W.B. Ralph Riemann and Bro. Kevin Thornburg, The Grand Master’s Leadership Award for W.B Val

Ryckman, and The Master of the Year Award for W.B. Val Ryckman.

REGULARCOMMUNICATION

The regular business meeting was held Feb. 6 after a great roast beef dinner prepared by the stewards of the lodge. Bro. Travis Dyer and Jr. Steward Mat Thompson were presented with their membership certificates. Bro. Bill King proved up as a Master Mason. It was announced that educational scholarship applications are now available from W.B. Greg Mason. The deadline is April 1. Reports were given regarding the elections and voting outcomes at Grand Lodge. Awards received at Grand Lodge were presented to the lodge. W.B. Val Ryckman was presented at the altar and surprised with the presentation of the Master of the Year Award. He received a standing ovation from the brethren present at the meeting.

The Rock Maul Award is presented annually by the Grand Master to the Lodge in our Grand Jurisdiction which represents the best overall Lodge. Lodges submit an application annually to be considered. There are two Rock Mauls, one for small lodges and one for large lodges. Cotner won in the Large Lodge category. Well Done!

DUES ARE DUE

Dues for all Masonic Lodges for 2012 were due Jan. 1. Send payment to your Lodge Secretary. Members with unpaid dues will be delinquent March 1. Suspension by Grand Lodge comes April 30. Suspension in Lodge also means suspension in Eastern Star, York Rite, Scottish Rite and Shrine.

Look at your dues card. If it does not say 2012, send payment today to your Secretary.

Eastern Star dues are also due Jan. 1. Send dues to your Chapter Secretary. Unpaid members will be-come delinquent Oct. 1, with suspension Dec. 31.

INSTALLATION

This past month started off with the installation of new officers on Jan. 15. The open ceremony started at 2:56 to reflect the charter number of our lodge and there wasn’t an empty seat in the building. There could not have been a more suitable Installing Officer for W.M. Elect James Eggerling’s Installation than his own father, W.B. Rich Eggerling. The W.M. Elect’s brother, Jeff Eggerling, was also installed into his new office as Senior Deacon and it was really special to see generations of the same family sharing in the joy of Masonry.

BUSINESS MEETING

There’s no better way to start a month than with a Lodge meeting and on Feb. 2, Hickman Lodge held its first meeting with the new officers. They had met the week prior for practice and were ready to begin work for the New

Year. Three of our four candidates for the degrees had traveled up to Omaha for a one-day conferral and our new brothers Jeff Gins and Troy Hierarchs were on hand to prove up as Master Masons. As a lodge we are really hoping to have a stellar year bringing in new Masons and this was a great start.

Several committees were formed to help carry out the work set before us and plans for the Shrine Bowl Picnic were discussed as well. The recommendations of the Grand Master were covered prior to the yearly meeting and plans for degree work practice were put into place. Masonic symbols and references in Mozart’s classical music was discussed as part of our Masonic education, which was both entertaining and enlightening. After lodge was closed, the brothers retired to the basement for refreshments and more brotherhood. It was a great start for our new Masonic year and we are all looking forward to what lays ahead.

Temple Chapter No. 271 held their 2012 Installation of Officers on Jan. 21 at the Scottish Rite Temple. Sis. Lorrie Bryant and Bro. Don Jelinek were installed as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. Other officers installed for the ensuing year are:

In addition to the 2012 Chapter Officers, W.M. Lorrie and W.P. Don appointed Honorary Chapter Officers for the year to assist and support the Officers.

These Honorary Officers include long-time members of Temple Chapter who have much wisdom to share with the newer members. The Chapter will look forward to their input during the coming term.

The Installation ceremony was conducted by Installing Grand Officer Betty Garwood, PGM, Installing Grand Marshal James F. Brown, PGP, Installing Grand Chaplain Jan Thoman, PGM, and Installing Grand Organist Mary Ann Stevens, PM. Sis. Nadyne Bauer attended the guest book and Sis. Robyn Throckmorton, PM and Sis. Christine Wigert and Bro. Greg Mason PP and Ben Wigert greeted the guests. Sis. Beth O’Neill provided a flute solo during Installation of the Worthy Matron and 8-year-old Caleb Nelson played the piano during the intermission. During the coming year, in addition to fellowship and fund raising activities for the Chapter, awareness activities and opportunities to assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders will be a focus for the Chapter.

STATED MEETING

The first meeting of the 2012

year was held on Feb. 6. W.M. Lorrie and W.P. Don welcomed and thanked all in attendance. Introductions included Bro. Carl Plants, Grand Patron; Sis. Karan Birdsall, Grand Organist; Sis. Robyn Throckmorton, District Grand Supervisor; and Sis. Carolyn Plants, Grand Companion to the Grand Patron. The 2011 annual reports were presented for the Secretary and Treasurer. The Chapter voted to change the May stated meeting date to May 14 due to Grand Chapter occurring during the regular stated meeting time. Sis. Robyn Throckmorton’s nephew, Gregory Keen, who attends Omaha Burke High School, was recommended for the Chapter’s Masonic Band Scholarship.

AFTERNOON TEA

The Chapter will have a Spring Afternoon Tea on Mar. 31 as a fund raiser. Entertainment will be provided, and art will be on display by students from Art Planet, a Lincoln art studio for children with special needs. Homemade items will be on sale to support Lincoln Assembly No 6, Rainbow for Girls.

On Feb. 27 the Masonic News Board of Directors met at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple, 1635 L St. All the officers of the Board were present as were eight voting delegates from our member organizations.

NEW BUSINESSMANAGER ELECTED

As per our by-laws, our busi-ness director can serve for a maxi-mum of 5 years consecutively. This past year saw Sis. Beth Benson, Past Matron of Electa Chapter No. 8, reach that plateau. For those of you who have reached the “retire-ment years,” you know it can be bittersweet. She is glad her service to our organization is over, but she will be greatly missed because of the fine job she has done for our organization. That being said, I’m sure our new business manager, Sis. Bette Cummins, Past Matron of Myrtle Chapter No. 94, is up to the challenge of following in Sis. Beth’s footsteps. Congratulations are extended to each of you!

BUSINESS MEETING

The festive board was spread with baked ham and potato casserole. To give the cook proper credit, there were no leftovers. The January Business Meeting held no surprises with business as usual. Worshipful Master David Peck did a good job conducting his first meeting. He needs to learn to just relax. The old Past Masters will get him shined up soon. He is young and has great potential. Our renter in our downstairs retail area has requested a longer term contract which lends to our stability. The girls from Bethel 27 will cook for the March meeting.

GRAND LODGE

Grand Lodge for 2012 is over and, for the most part, all of our delegates returned relatively unscathed. Per various reports, the shenanigans continued. It is my fervent hope; someone with positive leadership skills will step up and “take the wheel” as it were. I remember just a short time ago, Grand Lodge Officers were the pillars we neophytes held up as exemplars’. What happened? While traveling out of state a short time ago, I was approached by a fellow traveler and after we established our bona fides, an unexpected question came out of left field and I was asked if we had resolved our “mess.” I could only reply that “I hoped the madness would end soon.” I was very embarrassed, to say the least to know we are under the microscope of other jurisdictions.

Rather than promulgate new rules, I’d bet if the present by laws were observed, most of the stink would have dissipated and our leadership wouldn’t look so inept. This is purely my opinion and not necessarily the feelings of North Star Lodge or the Masonic News Organization.

A COUPLE OF FUNNIES

A teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. The next day the kids came back and one by one began to tell their stories. “Tony, do you have a story to share?” “Yes ma’am. My daddy told a story about my Aunt Nancy. She was a C130 pilot in Desert Storm and her plane got hit by a ground to air missile. She had to bail out over enemy territory and all she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol and a survival knife. She drank the whiskey on the parachute ride down. The wind blew her parachute right into the middle of twenty enemy troops. She shot fifteen of them with the pistol until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke, and then she killed the last of the enemy with her bare hands.” ‘Good Heavens’ said the horrified teacher. ‘What kind of moral did your daddy teach you from this horrible story?’ Tony: “Stay away from Aunt Nancy when she’s drinking.”

FATAL POKER GAME

Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O’Leary’s apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up. Michael O’Conner looks around and asks “Oh, me boys, someone has to tell Paddy’s wife. Who will it be?” They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don’t make a bad situation any worse. “Discreet??? I’m the most discreet Irishman you’ll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me.” Gallagher goes over to Murphy’s house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers, and asks what he wants.

G a l l a g h e r d e c l a r e s , “Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home.”

“Tell him to drop dead!”, says Murphy’s wife. “I’ll go tell him.” says Gallagher.

Bro Foust was raised to Master Mason on March 2, 1951, in Acacia Lodge No. 34 in Schuyler, NE. He received his 50 year pin in 2001. Bro. Foust is a member of Craftsmen Lodge No. 314 and Starcraft Chapter No. 307 OES. A good time was had by all.

STATED MEETING

Members of Starcraft Chapter were all decked out in red for Valentine’s Day for the Feb. 1 stated meeting. The newly installed officers took their stations and Worthy Matron, Sis. Cora Redwine, and Bro. Jim Banister, welcomed everyone. Bro. Charles Godwin gave the Trustees Annual Report. Thanks to the Trustees for all your work in putting this report together. Sis. Terri Sherman, Assoc. Matron was installed for the coming year.

GOOD NEWS

Starcraft Chapter will be giving one scholarship to Sis. Julie Fowler’s nephew. We also approved one Band Scholarship. Congratulations to Bro. Carol Foust who was presented with his 60 year pin by Craftsman Lodge. Kensington will be honoring all 2012 Starcraft Officers at their March 6 luncheon. Sis. Bev Ryba reported that her Grandson, Kolton Ryba has his new hearing device in and is doing really well. Sis. Tammy Minor won the “Heart

of 4-H Award” in recognition of outstanding volunteer service. Sis. Tammy has served as a 4-H leader through afterschool programming for four years. We are happy to announce that Sis. Ortrude Snyder is doing well following eye surgery.

DEATH

Sadly, we report the death of Sis. Margaret Ann Davis who we found out passed away on Nov. 10.

SUPERVISOR VISIT

We look forward to our school of instruction on Sat., Mar. 3 with Sis. Sharlene Coulter as our supervisor. The Past Matrons will be serving our lunch for us that day. It should be a fun day.

Eleven Brothers and family members celebrated our Lodge’s Annual George Washington Day Dinner on Feb. 21, just one day before his 280th birthday.

O u r n e w Wo r s h i p f u l Master Scott Keller told us some facts about W.B. Washington, such as his personal wealth of $205 million in today’s dollars.

W.M. Keller also showed a video about W.B. Washington’s life.

After the program, we enjoyed a dinner of prime rib, salmon or chicken at Misty’s Resturant in Havelock, where we he ld our ce leb ra t ion .

Our Lodge conducted the Masonic Funeral Services for our late Bro. R. Bruce Campbell on Jan. 19 at Eastridge Presbyterian

His topic on Jan. 19 and 24 was “When is Probate a Dirty Word?” On Jan. 31 his topic was divorce and estate planning.

I know you wished you lived closer, but 400 miles is 400 miles. We might not be very good about sending photos through the mail, but if you want pictures of your Grand Kids to print off for yourself, just check out the photos posted in our folders on Facebook. We seem to post pic-tures or videos on a weekly basis.

To all parents, grand parents, and computer literate great grand parents: Just do it: join your kids’ social networking site. It’s like you are living right beside them and can get updates on the kids whenever you want. No waiting for a phone call, no waiting for a letter, heck, some grand parents even chat to

their grand kids on a daily basis, not using the phone, but using their fingers. Electronic communication is here to stay. You can either be part of it, or be left behind. Signed, Your Son, The Editor.

REGULAR MEETING

Liberty Lodge met for its regular monthly business meeting on Feb. 9, the second Thursday of Februrary due to the Grand Lodge of Nebraska’s 155th Annual Communication. Dinner beforehand consisted of homemade Chili, cinnamon rolls, and pie. It was a good fare for our Stewards first regular meeting since installation. Favorable reports were given on the petitions of Mr. Russell Cowan and Mr. Lyndon Raatz. They were subsequently elected into membership of Liberty Lodge No. 300. Two new petitions were read and referred to committee. Correspondence included an update from Bro. Frank Rowe who is, once again, out of the country for work; Bro. John Baty who is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Heritage Science for Conservation at John Hopkins University which researches the underlying physical science of book and paper degradation and solutions for conservation; and a thank you from Bro. Ronnie Smith’s widow for our participation in his funeral service.

REPORTS

A report on the Grand Lodge Annual Communication was given by Worshipful Master Mark Eliker. It was noted that W.B. Bruce Watkins was appointed Grand Custodian. We are honored to have W.B. Bruce on our roll of Past Masters and know he will do an excellent job in his new role. Congratulations W.B. Bruce!!

W.B. Wade reported that we still had 65 Brethren with unpaid dues for 2012. A reminder that dues were due Jan. 1 and become delinquent on Apr. 1. Automatic suspension occurs on Apr. 30. If you haven’t submitted your 2012 dues yet, please get them in.

We reviewed the proposed 2012 budget, calendar through to September, and the upcoming Schools of Instruction schedules.

DEATH

We were informed that 58

year member Bro. John McElhaney passed away on Oct. 21 2011. A card was sent to his widow Marilyn.

PLEA

W.M. Mark made a plea to our Brethren about learning lectures. With W.B. Bruce being appointed Grand Custodian, his schedule will not allow him to be present for much degree work this year. He has put in over 20 years helping with degree work and he should receive a well deserved break. Without W.B. Bruce, our lodge has 2 proficient Brothers to handle our lectures and one of them has some health issues. Please step up.

MASTER’S DEGREE

On Feb. 16, Liberty Lodge conferred the Master Mason Degree on Bro. Randy Rutt and Bro. Jacob Hedden. Our trestleboard showed just how badly we need more Brethren to step up to help with degree work. We had three of our usual helpers unavailable and had to bring in five brothers from other lodges to help. We owe a great deal of thanks to W.M. Greg Mason of Cotner Lodge No. 297, W.B. Earl Robinett of George Washington No. 250, W.B. Virgil Meints of Lincoln Lodge No. 19, W.B. Joe Huskey of Lancaster Lodge No. 54, and W.B. Mike Lagueux of Lancaster Lodge No. 54 for their assistance. Four of our Brothers were in their chairs for the first time in a Master’s conferral, W.M. Mark Eliker, Jr. Warden Dale Smith, Sr. Deacon Andy Seachord, and Sr. Steward Dennis Hecht. All did a fabulous job with their respective parts! An extra special thanks to W.B. Virgil Meints for the extra enlightenment during the evening!

ENTERED APPRENTICE DEGREE

On Feb. 23, Liberty Lodge conferred the Entered Apprentice Degree on Mr. Lyndon Raatz. We also did courtesy work for Hyland Lodge No. 194 in Cortland on Bro. Dallas Shoemaker who needed to receive the 2nd and 3rd Section

Lectures. Dinner before the degree consisted of sloppy joes for which the Stewards were given a hearty thanks. Our lack of lecturers was also apparent this evening as W.B. Wade Kendle presented the Questions, 2nd Section, 3rd Section, and Charge. There is a light shining through the end of the degree work tunnel however, Bro. Alex Rivera-Aschen, who just might be the only quadriplegic in Nebraska who is a member of the Masons of Nebraska, presented the Answers through the obligation and was spot on, especially for his first time before the Lodge. He said the next time he presents them, he’ll do the whole thing! Bro. Mark Turner took over after the obligation and finished the Answers out. Visitors from Hyland Lodge No. 194 were introduced west of the altar: Worshipful Master Larry Burgess and W.B. Steve Rossom who thanked the Lodge for allowing them to bring their candidate down to finish his degree. The card players were out in force after the meeting.

BUSY DAY

Feb. 18 was a busy day for Electa Chapter. The morning was spent with our District Supervisor Sharlene Coulter, Assoc. Grand Conductress. Our time with Sis. Sharlene was very informative and productive.

Following the morning’s events we held our Stated meeting. Worthy Matron Barb Tisdale welcomed all by sharing thoughts about Valentine’s Day. Worthy Patron Keith Garrison also welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. Grand Honors were extended to PGM, Sis. Betty Pauley. A short business meeting followed.

SWEETHEART BALL

All of Eiche Chapter was laughing, joking, and dancing their hearts out at the 2012 District 2 Sweetheart Ball. We were once again showing off some of the best dancing in Lincoln and entertaining our guests with Michael Jackson dance re-enactments (you rock Fergie).

The Eiche boys arrived at the Shrine Center at two o’clock in the afternoon to help organize and help setup. At five Adam Medley, Jon Lighthall, and I, escorted our Sweetheart Pamela McLeod and the two candidates Miranda Sinkule and Marissa Roesler. We went to Applebee’s and had an amazing dinner at which time we got to know a little more about our Sweetheart candidates. After dinner we escorted our candidates to the dance. We danced the night away until it was time for us to crown our Sweetheart of 2012.

Everything was quiet as our Sweetheart preformed the ceremonial ritual of just barely touching the crown to one of the candidates heads and then ripping it away again. The tension was palpable until the crown came down upon the head of . . . Miranda Sinkule.

Every DeMolay that attended the ball then gathered around our old Sweetheart Pamela. We all kneeled around her and began to sing at the top of our voices “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”. Pamela, as brave and resilient as ever, managed not to start crying until after the song. From all of the Eiche boys: we will miss you Pamela and we are exited for your reign as Sweetheart Miranda.

Eiche has had a very busy month. Not only did we elect a new Sweetheart but we also elected a completely new line up of officers.

The Rainbow girls had to reschedule their safety presentation due to an unexpected illness, and the new date for the presentation will be on Apr. 3 at 6:30 p.m. It will still be held at the Scottish Rite in Lincoln. The presentation will be given by a Lincoln Police Department Officer and will focus on youth safety here in Lincoln. All youth, parents, and adults are encouraged to come and learn from one of our own LPD officers. He will also be available for questions and who better to ask about being safe in Lincoln than a Police Officer? PROSPECT PARTY

On Feb 25-26, Bethel No 5 of Job’s Daughters International held one of the largest Jobbie functions that I have attended in recent memory outside of Grand Bethel. We had a prospect party with a sleepover attended by 21 prospects, 8 Jobbies, and about 10 adult advisors. The party began with information about Jobs for our prospects, a Silly Supper dinner served by the adults, and then a

whole lots of the game “sardines.” Also available were movies and a Wii game system. Bethel No. 24 from Plattsmouth also came and enjoyed the weekend. There was some unanticipated excited with 2 accidents on the corner of 17th and L and one visitor in the parking lot that the adults kindly dealt with. All in all an enjoyable time was had by all. One petition was collected at the party with another promised. Several girls commented, “I have to ask my parents.” Follow-up should allow us to grow.
