A friendly reminder!

Wednesday, June 27th at the Calmar Town Office. Please note: Our standard due date of June 30th falls on a Saturday this year. As per the Interpretation's Act, you may pay your account on the next business day, which falls on Tuesday, July 3rd. Penalties will be applied on any outstanding 2018 levies on Wednesday, July 4th. Payment options that are available: Cash or Cheque, Interac, and Online. Penalties are not applied to payments that are post marked (via Canada Post and Online) July 3rd, 2018. This rule only applies for the 2018 tax year. If you have any questions, please contact the Tax Clerk, Amanda @ [email protected] or 780-985-3604 ext. 232.

The Calmar Summer Getaway is back for another year! Once again led by Amanda Decker and her able team, the 6 week program will kick off Tuesday 03 July and conclude Thursday 09 August. As you read this I hope the registration forms will be ready for sending out/picking up. This year the price of registration and field trips will be higher than last year. This will be mainly attributable to 2 things. First, unlike previous years, this year will see each participant get a souvenir shirt to KEEP at the end of the camp. The main purpose of the shirt will be for making the kids easier to see and identify on field trips but also because it was felt they should have a nice reminder of their summer camp experience. Second, unfortunately as anyone who drives can attest, the price of gas is higher than it’s ever been in our Province and the minimum wage continues its climb toward $15.00. Because of these outside factors, operating costs for the Summer Getaway will be going up, especially for the field trips. As the program is already subsidized by Calmar ratepayers, it would be unfair to ask them to contribute more. All efforts will be made to keep the Summer Getaway affordable and an excellent value for the dollar for Calmar families.

It’s never too early to start talking about Calmar Days. Registrations for the parade began in late April (registration forms can be found on the Town website) and the Slo-Pitch tournament has already made plans for Calmar’s first ever night games under artificial lighting! Coming soon we will be putting out a poll to see what movie you would like to see under the stars. Keep checking the Chronicle, Facebook, and our website for more updates.

Let’s enjoy Summer! Stay hydrated, keep cool in the

shade, keep out of the sun when the UV index is high! Enjoy

the refreshing water at our Spray Park!

Kids are now out of school! Driver’s: take extra caution, Parent’s: Re-

mind our children to stop, look and listen when by the roads.

Home owners: Please remember; it is your responsibility to maintain

your lawns. You could be fined if your yard is found to be unsightly!

Vehicle owners: Please remember; be aware of when street sweeping is

in effect in your area! Signs are set on the affected streets a couple days

before. Your vehicle must be off the road during this time for Public

Works to operate their equipment efficiently. Your vehicle may be towed

and/or ticketed if not removed.

Lastly, please keep in mind our Noise Bylaw (7am-11pm Mon-Fri & 9am-

11pm Sat & Sun) when enjoying your time around the campfire or just

outdoors altogether. We all want to enjoy our Summer experience with-

out Bylaw Enforcement being involved. (Unless you’re just saying hi!)

Everyone: Keep smiling and have a great month! Don’t for-

get to visit the new businesses that came into Town!

Join us for Canada Day in Calmar at Engberg Park (the Spray Park north of the Mike Karbonik Arena). From Noon until 3:00 p.m. we will have hot dogs, pop, and cake for everyone as well as fun, tradi-tional family activities. There will be a pie throw (celebrity victims to be named later!), water bal-loon toss, 3 legged races, sack races, tug-of-wars, and a fishing game. In the event of inclement weather, activities will take place inside the Mike Karbonik Arena.

Mayor’s Corner

I am sorry to advise that Councilor Matt Sargent has resigned his seat on Council. I thank Mr. Sargent for serving his community;

it was my honor to work with him for the last six months. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors Matt! The Town will be

holding a by-election on Monday, July 23rd

to fill the vacant seat.

Property Tax time is upon us again! This time of the year is always a challenge for Mayor, Council, and Town Administration with

the many cries from the community that think their taxes are higher than their friends in other communities.

Let’s talk about Taxes! First, your total tax bill does not all go to the Town of Calmar. All Municipalities collect Alberta School Tax

on behalf of the Provincial Government. The School Tax portion on your taxes adds up to 20 to 25 percent of the total tax bill that

you pay. The remainder of 75 to 80 percent goes to the Town of Calmar to run the Town.

Facts to take into consideration: A community purchases a piece of equipment that costs $250,000. Calmar has 2,200

people paying for that equipment, their share is much larger than if 33,000 people pay for the same piece of equipment.

What did it cost you to purchase your home? The home you purchase in Calmar versus Devon, Leduc, or the City of Edmonton

can be $50,000 to $300,000 cheaper. For sake of argument let’s say your taxes are $1,000 higher than the larger communities.

With a price difference of $50,000 to $300,000 it would take you 50 to 300 years before you reach your break- even point. This

does not include the interest that you would pay on that money.

I deliver welcome bags to new people in our community. I ask every new resident what made them choose Calmar? The num-

ber one response is the price of their home.

Before the last election I contacted the Town of Millet, Lamont, Bruderheim, Red Water, Bon Accord, Thorsby, Devon, and the

City of Leduc to see where their tax rate was. The six Towns are of comparable population and distance from the City of Edmon-

ton; they are very close to each other on their tax rate. Keep in mind that this does not allow for comparison of what services

they provide for their residents. Devon and the City of Leduc's tax rates are lower than the other six smaller communities as their

population is greater and have more people to pay the bills. Thorsby on the other hand, being half the size of the other communi-

ties has the highest tax rate because they have the lowest population and less people to pay the bills. I will state the fact again

that the more people there are to pay for expenses the cheaper taxes become!

I ask people all the time of how we can attract new people to our community to help lower the tax burden for everyone? It always

surprises me how many people we have in our community that are constantly running the Town down, whether on Facebook or in

the coffee shops! I ask myself based on the comments, who and why would any person or business want to call Calmar home?

The negativity is simply counter-productive to what we wish to achieve and continues to promote the negative attitude in Calmar.

Council and Administration are trying to make Calmar an attractive community to live, play and do business in. Negativity does

not achieve this goal!

The bottom line is that we can cut taxes; however, your services will also have to be cut to afford a tax decrease. All the services

that Calmar boasts about, our Snow removal, recreation, library, policing, street cleaning, road repair and replacement infrastruc-

ture would need to be cut dramatically!

I challenge people who are negatively commenting on our community to put their names forward and run for Council to fill the

vacant seat. We would appreciate your ideas and solutions to the Town’s problems! Remember, we are all AMBASSADOR’S of

the Town of Calmar… How we speak of our Town can greatly impact what other’s outside our Community think and feel!

As always if you have any questions or concerns you can contact myself or any of the Councilors. We will answer your ques-

tions or get you the answer to your questions as soon as possible. I can be reached at [email protected] or call me at

(780) 722-4147. You can address all of Council between 6:30 and 7:00 pm before the council meeting held on the first and third

Mondays of the Month.

LET’S MAKE CALMAR, THE BEST CALMAR IT CAN BE.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 15 June

Virtually all countries are expected to see substantial growth in the number of older persons between 2015 and 2030, and that growth will be faster in developing regions. Because the numbers of older persons are growing, the amount of elder abuse can be expected to grow with it. While the taboo topic of elder abuse has started to gain visibility across the world, it remains one of the least investigated types of violence in national surveys, and one of the least addressed in national action plans.

Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community.

The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 66/127, designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations. http://www.un.org/en/events/elderabuse/index.shtml
