5 Reasons for Regular Dental Checkups!
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child see the dentist every six months. Your child is growing and changing so quickly, and the same goes for their teeth. Regular dental checkups allow the dentist to make sure their pearly whites are in tip-top shape. Here are the top 5 reasons your child should visit the dentist twice per year:
1. Find little cavities before they get big – Catching cavities early on, saves you time and money and saves your kids a whole lot of pain. If left untreated, they can even turn into painful infections that require root canals. Ouch!
2. Fight cavities with a dental cleaning – Twice-yearly dental visits should include a teeth cleaning where the dentist will scrape off sticky build-up on the teeth (plaque and tartar), and then polish them until they are nice and smooth making it hard for cavity-causing bacteria to “stick around.”
3. Make sure adult teeth are coming in properly – Baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth, helping them to grow in straight. When they fall out too early or if adult teeth come in too soon, the result can be a crooked, crowded smile.
4. Prevention is the best medicine – Regular dental checkups aren’t just for fixing problems. They also play a big role in stopping dental problems before they start.
5. Teach them how to care for their teeth – When kids visit the dentist, they don’t just get an exam
and a cleaning. They get an education.

Forget ghosts and goblins. For parents, it’s all that candy that is the scariest part of Halloween. When a child brings home a pile of sugary treats after a night of Trick-or-Treating, it can be tough to know what to do. Sure, it’s okay to have a piece or two of candy every now and then. But the huge amounts of candy that kids eat at Halloween can cause serious harm to their teeth. Kool Smiles has a solution that both parents and kids will love. It’s called Operation Troop Treats.
This year, from October 29 to November 5, kids can bring their unopened Halloween candy to any Kool Smiles office, and get a toy in return!* And you don’t even need to be a Kool Smiles patient to participate. The donated candy will then be put into care packages by volunteers
over at Operation Gratitude, and sent to troops overseas. It’s a great way to curb your kiddo’s intake of candy, and put a smile on a soldier’s face at the same time!
Operation Troop Treats was started back in 2003, and eleven years later, it’s still going strong. Last year, kids across the country donated a whopping 2,345 pounds of Halloween candy to Kool Smiles. This year, we hope to do even better! Along with the candy, Kool Smiles also donates dental kits and oral care guides that teach soldiers how to keep their teeth healthy and cavity-free while away from home. With Operation Troop Treats, kids can still get the fun out of Halloween without getting cavities. Help us give members of our armed forces a taste of
home sweet home by taking part in Operation Troop Treats this November!
Operation Gratitude sends over 100,000 care packages to U.S. Service Members overseas every year. The care packages include candy from Operation Troop Treats, other snacks, personal letters, and entertainment items. The mission of Operation Gratitude is to lift the spirits of service members and show appreciation for all they do for our country!
*Kids may bring in their candy from opening time on October 28 until closing time on November 6th. Each child can receive one toy for every 25 pieces of unopened candy in its original packaging (single sticks of gum, for example, will not be accepted). Limit three toys per child. Toys will be given out on a first come, first served basis.

Don’t Let The Holidays Leave You With Cavities
Halloween marks the beginning of a long holiday season with lots of sweets and treats. The good news is that you’re in for a whole lot of deliciousness. The bad news? You’re increasing your risk of cavities, big time. When you eat, bacteria in your mouth turns the sugar from food into acid. This acid eats away at the hard outer layer of your teeth, causing cavities. The more sugar you eat, the more acid you will have eating away at your teeth. Yikes!
How to protect your teeth from sugar: • Eat sweets with a meal. The extra saliva that is made while eating
helps wash away the sugar.
• Brush after meals, especially those with sweets. Floss at least once per day, usually after the last meal.
• Foods that make the most acid in the mouth are candies and desserts. Limit them to once per day. The more times you snack on sugary foods, the more times your teeth will get covered in acid.
• Starchy foods like rice, potatoes, chips, and bread can make a lot of acid in the mouth too. Brush after eating these foods.
• Instead of drinking hot chocolate, soda, or juice, gulp down a glass of water instead.
Give Kids Healthy Yummy Treats Instead:
• Apple Slices and Peanut Butter: This simple and tasty snack is great for any time of year. You can also use celery or carrot sticks instead of apples.
• Veggie Skeleton for Halloween: Turn a boring pile of veggies into a spooky skeleton treat. Use carrot or celery sticks for arms and legs, green pepper slices for ribs, and a tomato or cucumber slice for the head!
• Fruity Christmas Tree: Use green apple slices to make a tree shape, then decorate it with grapes, banana slices, and berries!
• Snowman Pizza: Use three small circles of pizza dough to make a snowman shape. Add sauce and cheese. Let your kiddos make the face, arm, buttons, and scarf out of veggies.
Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the holiday fun. It’s easier than you think to keep your smile healthy and cavity-free over the holidays. It just takes a little effort, but it’s worth it.

Sticky, sweet and chewy foods can stick to teeth, making it hard to wash away. There are many candies that are not good for your child’s mouth. Sticky candies can get stuck between teeth and cause cavities. The best time to enjoy a sugary treat is right after a healthy meal. Saliva in the mouth can help to keep the mouth free of sugar.
All foods that your child eats can hurt or help their teeth. Teeth need healthy foods, drinks and snacks in order to stay strong. Children may not know which foods can be bad for their teeth, and most kids love sweets or candy. Sweets like cakes,
sodas, juices with sugars and candy can stick to teeth and cause cavities. Candies and any food or drink with sugar (natural or processed) should only be eaten occasionally. Stick to water over juices and sodas. Good food choices include raw fruits and vegetables like strawberries, apples, salad, carrots, etc. Try making the fruits and veggies into a design on their plates.
Some of the sticky candies that can be bad for teeth are gummies, taffy, hard candy, lolipops and sugary bubblegum. Lots of snacking during the day without brushing the teeth after can
lead to buildup on the teeth. Even the sugar in dried fruit and fruit candies can cause buildup on teeth. Build up, or plaque, can lead to tooth decay causing cavities. Brushing and flossing after meals is a great way to keep teeth clean and strong. Eating the right foods and taking care of teeth are some of the best ways parents can help kids keep healthy, happy smiles!

Stay Informed What you Should Know
Welcome to Kool Smiles! We are excited you have chosen the Kool Smiles team as your dental care provider. Our goal as your dentist is to help you and your family establish good, healthy dental habits that will last a lifetime.
This information is really important! You should read and understand it before receiving any treatment.
Here’s why it is important: This document explains rights and responsibilities. It tells you what you should know and understand about dental treatment. It also lets you know exactly how we plan to provide quality dental care to you and your family.
What You Should Know & Understand About Your Dental Care
Patient Rights & Responsibilities
What we both agree to:• You are responsible for your and your child’s oral health care
decisions. Our team will provide information and offer professional advice, but ultimately you make the decisions.
• You are responsible for practicing good hygiene habits at home (eat three healthy meals, brush twice and floss once each day!). You are also responsible for coming in to the dental office for regular professional cleanings.
• You are responsible for completing any treatment you agree to in order to ensure a healthy outcome. Except in the case of pain, or emergency care, we can refuse treatment if you have failed to show up for appointments, are disruptive or could, in our judgment, be a risk to other patients, doctors and staff.
• We will treat each other with kindness and respect. Our dental care providers will be attentive to your needs and we will answer any questions you may have to the best of our ability.
• Our dentists and staff will do their best to provide high quality care to all of our patients, without regard to ethnicity, gender, national origin, religion, age, or disability. If we feel your care is best provided by someone else, we will provide you with a referral.
• We will keep details about your health, dentist visits, and treatment plans private in accordance with federal and state privacy requirements. It is your responsibility to give us honest, accurate, and complete information about your medical history and current health status so we might make the best professional decision about your care needs.
• We know that both our patients and doctors have busy schedules, so it is important that you are on time for all scheduled appointments. If we believe there will be a long delay while we attend to the dental needs of other patients, we will tell you and offer alternatives. We ask that you do your best to notify us at least a day in advance if you need to change or cancel your appointment.
• We will work together, in good faith, to resolve any problems or conflicts that may arise. We are both responsible for communicating with one another to try to resolve any differences and to try to make things better.
Before You Begin Any Dental Treatment:After your exam, a Kool Smiles dentist will provide a treatment plan using their best independent clinical opinion. You will have an opportunity to openly discuss this plan, and how much it will cost, with a dental professional. If you are not sure about any treatment, what it is, what it is designed to accomplish or why it is needed, discuss it with your dentist before agreeing to the treatment.
Suggested questions to ask before treatment begins:q Are there any other treatment options?q How much will this cost?q How much will I owe if my insurance does not pay?q Is there a cheaper option?q What could happen if I go without this treatment?q Is this treatment likely to solve my problem?
You can always decide to:• Accept, delay, or decline any part of the treatment
recommendations, including work that is already in progress.
• Use other payment options, such as credit and extended payment plans. You should always understand the additional cost if you don’t pay using cash; credit options might be more expensive.
• Seek a second opinion. There may be additional cost of receiving a second opinion from another dentist. Remember that each dentist’s opinion might be different. You should choose the treatment option you think is right from a dentist you trust.
• Request a copy of your medical records.
Talk To A Patient AdvocateIf you have any questions about our service, your treatment, or your bill, please contact the office, the dentist, or his/her staff. Our Patient Advocate hotline is available for you at any time, toll free, at 1-888-644-9144.

Family DIY Project: Show Your Kids How Brushing Keeps Teeth White
Do-It-Yourself projects are an easy and affordable way to spend quality time with your kids at home. With hands-on projects like the one outlined below, your kids will be able to learn something new, and have fun at the same time. In the following project, you will use eggs to show your children how and why regular brushing keeps teeth free of stains.
For this project, you will need the following: • Fluoride toothpaste • 2 eggs • 2 clear glasses • Coffee or black tea
Step 1: Cover one of the eggs in fluoride toothpaste. Let it sit overnight. Rinse off toothpaste the next day.
Step 2: Place this egg in one of the glasses of coffee or tea and label “treated egg.” Place the second egg in the second glass of coffee or tea.
Step 3: Let the two eggs sit for about 24 hours. Ask your kids to check on them every few hours to see what is happening.
Step 4: The next day, take the eggs out of the glasses and set them on a paper towel. Your kids will notice that the untreated egg is darker and has more stains. Why is this? Egg shells and teeth are both made of calcium. What happens to the egg shells in this project is similar to what happens to teeth. The fluoride in the toothpaste strengthens the calcium in the egg shell, and makes it hard for stains to “hang on.” The same thing happens to your teeth when you brush them with fluoride toothpaste.
It is important to point out that the treated egg is also stained, but not as badly. This is why it is important to brush twice a day, to remove stains that are already there, and protect teeth from getting new stains. If a food or drink stains your clothing, it can also stain your teeth over time.
Brushing twice-daily with fluoride toothpaste is the best way to keep those pearly whites sparkling!
