The season of Advent signals the time ofwaiting and deep preparation for therenewed welcoming of Jesus into ourfamilies and lives It is a beautiful time forshared reflections on the gift of familyand loved ones as we focus on ourcelebration of the true meaning ofChristmas

We are also fare-welling our Year 12graduates and celebrate the paths theyhave walked with us during their yearsat St Francis de Sales For severalfamilies their last child will graduate fromthe College and we invite you all to stay

Week 4 saw the Year 7 cohort head offon an exciting journey to Canberra Thisadventure commenced on Sundayafternoon with all of the studentsgathering at the College to say a fondfarewell to their families and board thebus to travel to the airport An animatedgroup of students arrived in our capitalready to explore their accommodation atthe Australian Institute of SportThroughout the course of the next sixdays we experienced many highlightsincluding meeting His ExcellencyGeneral the Honorable Sir PeterCosgrove at Government Housevisiting Parliament House Telstra TowerSt Christopherrsquos Cathedral the HighCourt the Deep Space Centre andmany more attractions Our visitculminated in having the privilege ofbeing present at the Australian WarMemorial for the Remembrance Dayceremony which was an incredibly

connected as we value immensely ourrelationships with our community

Across the R-12 College we are busilymaking transition preparations for nextyear to support all our young learnersbenefit from engaging and academicchallenges with a focus on well-beingand the holistic development of heartmind and spirit Please share anyquestions you may have with ourlearning teams and your childsteachers

The Year 7 Canberra Camp Team

Students from our school have recentlyundertaken an educational tour of thenational capital Students have beengiven the opportunity to participate in avariety of educational programs with afocus on Australiarsquos history cultureheritage and democracy The Australian Government recognisesthe importance of all young Australiansbeing able to visit the national capital aspart of their Civics and Citizenshipeducation To assist families in meetingthe cost of the excursion the AustralianGovernment is contributing funding of$6000 per student under the Parliamentand Civics Education Rebate programtowards those costs The rebate isdeducted from the cost for each familyand is paid directly to the school uponcompletion of the excursion

On Sunday 27 November the Churchbegins its new Liturgical Year withAdvent The period of Advent is a time ofexpectation waiting hoping and prayingin the lead up to the coming of Jesus atChristmas The word Advent comesfrom the Latin word Adventus meaninglsquoarrivalrsquo

Traditionally the Advent wreathsymbolizes the passage of the fourweeks of Advent It is typically a circularcandle holder that holds five candlesDuring the season of Advent one candleon the wreath is lit each Sunday until allof the candles including the fifth candleare lit on Christmas Day Each candle

This night was a wonderful celebration ofthese students and the amazing Art andDesign works they had produced as partof their Year 12 course All whoattended commented on how diverseeach of the works were and the varietyof media used to create such individualand unique pieces It was a wonderfulshowcase of these talented studentsand their work enjoyed with theirfamilies and friends and the wider StFrancis de Sales community

Research suggests that music helpskids minds develop in a number ofways

bull A 2011 study found that scores on atest of verbal intelligence among 4- to 6-year-olds rose after only a month ofmusic lessons

bull A 2004 study led by GlennSchellenberg found that 6-year-olds whotook nine months of keyboard or voicelessons had an IQ boost compared withchildren who took no lessons at all

Another busy couple of weeks and wehave reached the end of Week 6 Theend of the year is rapidly approachingand staff and students are busyfinalising end of year assessments andtasks and many exciting events aretaking place We were blessed withsome lovely weather for our R-3 SportsDay The students all participated welland lots of fun was had by all Thanks toour BBQ cooks and all the helpers The 23 classes had a visit from anambulance and enjoyed exploring thevan and asking questions The R1students visited the Art Gallery and hadlots of fun being artists in the studio Wethank all the helpers who managed toassist classes for these events aswithout your support they cannot occur This week we welcomed our newfamilies as we began our orientationvisits for our new Reception students for2017 We also welcomed our other newstudents in other year levels who arejoining our community next year It is

On Friday 18 November the R-6Japanese Festival was held in the JuniorSchool Students from Year 6 organisedand facilitated a range of traditionalJapanese activities for the R-5 studentsto participate in and enjoy Theseincluded origami kendama kamifusentamaire manga stories ohajiki wateryoyos and a crowd favourite ndash sumosuits It was fantastic to see the Year 6students engage the Junior Schoolclasses with each activity and to havethe R-5 students join in with suchenthusiasm Lunch was shared on the Junior Schoolgreen and included nearly 200 staff andstudent Obento boxes delivered by agreat company who individually createdthem for our students In the afternoonstudents returned to their classrooms towatch a Japanese movie to wind downafter such an exciting day

Throughout the year our staffparticipates in a variety of professionaldevelopment opportunities The past 12months has been no exception withteachers working on the Institute ofEducational Assessors course an R-6Numeracy Inquiry and a variety of Well-being programs Many of our staff havealso taken up the challenge to completefurther study through these courses withsome completing the CertifiedEducational Assessors Course andothers participating in a 2 yearNumeracy Project with the CatholicEducation Office

These professional developmentprograms ensure that our staff is up todate with the most current research intheir field It also ensures that across R-6 our staff continually expands theirknowledge and skills to implement thebest educational practices for yourchildren

Kmart Wishing Tree

Forty-five students from Years 2 to 7attended the annual opening of theWishing Tree at Kmart Mount Barker We were accompanied by MichelleHahn Bec Dodd Michelle Parkes KateThomas and three parent volunteers Many parents relatives and communitymembers were in the audience The children sang a twenty minute set ofChristmas Carols beautifully andrepresented the College with greatmaturity and grace It is a pleasure towork with them and the feedback fromKmart staff the audience and theSalvation Army personnel in attendancewas highly favourable Emily LovelockMusic

On Wednesday 2 November weparticipated in lsquoNude Food Dayrsquo as awhole school Students wereencouraged to bring their lunch in a re-useable container with no plasticpackaging We saw some amazinglunches and 20 students were luckyenough to win a $5 canteen voucher touse before the end of the year Thanksto everyone who got on board to helpreduce rubbish and help keep ourCollege grounds clean and beautiful

R-3 Sports Day

The R-3 Sports Day was held on Friday11 November in beautiful warm weatherThe day commenced with an officialwelcome prayer team chants and anenergetic health hustle coordinatedentirely by the Year 6 students

At the completion of the Health Hustleclasses then moved off to commencetheir Tabloid and Athletic events Theday was completed with a relay featuringselected students from each class

On Monday 21 November the 2017leadership students were invited to theWhite Ribbon and ZONTA foundationmorning held at the Mount Baker PublicLibrary We were informed about the program tostop violence from men towards womenand were spoken to by Sergeant DerrickMcManus a police officer who was shot14 times by an armed man SgtMcManus survived the horrific incidentand lived to show everyone that it takesjust one person to make a miracleThe student leaders of 2017 wereinspired by the work of Sgt McManusand the Zonta foundation to take the oathldquoI will stand up speak out and act toprevent menrsquos violence against womenthis is my oathrdquo in front of the MountBarker Primary school and MountBarker South Primary School Year 4-5classes We showed them that we allstand together to prevent violence notonly against women but everyone

On Thursday Week 5 our Year 10 BoysBasketball Team participated in the finalcarnival at Wayville and rounded out theyear in 5th place over all The highlightfor the day was our final win againstBlackwood after a 1 pt heartbreak lossagainst them in the second round (3-point on the buzzer with a free throwafterwards) It was a hot gruelling dayfor our squad which was considerablysmaller in numbers than some of theother teams but they did us proud Our Year 10 Girls Baksetball Team alsoplayed in the State Finals out at PtAdelaide They did extremely well andwon their first two games convincinglyover Windsor Gardens and BalaklavaThis saw them through to the State Finalwhere they ran into an extremely strongand well drilled Whyalla team where theyunfortunately fell short Similar to the boys it was an extremelyhot day in the stadiums and our girls dida fantastic job getting where they did andcan be extremely proud of finishing 2ndin the State

Week 4 saw the Year 7 cohort head offon an exciting journey to Canberra Thisadventure commenced on Sundayafternoon with all of the studentsgathering at the College to say a fondfarewell to their families and board thebus to travel to the airport An animatedgroup of students arrived in our capitalready to explore their accommodation atthe Australian Institute of SportThroughout the course of the next sixdays we experienced many highlightsincluding meeting His ExcellencyGeneral the Honorable Sir PeterCosgrove at Government Housevisiting Parliament House Telstra TowerSt Christopherrsquos Cathedral the HighCourt the Deep Space Centre andmany more attractions Our visitculminated in having the privilege ofbeing present at the Australian WarMemorial for the Remembrance Dayceremony which was an incredibly

connected as we value immensely ourrelationships with our community

Students from our school have recentlyundertaken an educational tour of thenational capital Students have beengiven the opportunity to participate in avariety of educational programs with afocus on Australiarsquos history cultureheritage and democracy The Australian Government recognisesthe importance of all young Australiansbeing able to visit the national capital aspart of their Civics and Citizenshipeducation To assist families in meetingthe cost of the excursion the AustralianGovernment is contributing funding of$6000 per student under the Parliamentand Civics Education Rebate programtowards those costs The rebate isdeducted from the cost for each familyand is paid directly to the school uponcompletion of the excursion

Forty-five students from Years 2 to 7attended the annual opening of theWishing Tree at Kmart Mount Barker We were accompanied by MichelleHahn Bec Dodd Michelle Parkes KateThomas and three parent volunteers Many parents relatives and communitymembers were in the audience The children sang a twenty minute set ofChristmas Carols beautifully andrepresented the College with greatmaturity and grace It is a pleasure towork with them and the feedback fromKmart staff the audience and theSalvation Army personnel in attendancewas highly favourable Emily LovelockMusic

On Wednesday 2 November weparticipated in lsquoNude Food Dayrsquo as awhole school Students wereencouraged to bring their lunch in a re-useable container with no plasticpackaging We saw some amazinglunches and 20 students were luckyenough to win a $5 canteen voucher touse before the end of the year Thanksto everyone who got on board to helpreduce rubbish and help keep ourCollege grounds clean and beautiful

Forty-five students from Years 2 to 7attended the annual opening of theWishing Tree at Kmart Mount Barker We were accompanied by MichelleHahn Bec Dodd Michelle Parkes KateThomas and three parent volunteers Many parents relatives and communitymembers were in the audience The children sang a twenty minute set ofChristmas Carols beautifully andrepresented the College with greatmaturity and grace It is a pleasure towork with them and the feedback fromKmart staff the audience and theSalvation Army personnel in attendancewas highly favourable Emily LovelockMusic

On Wednesday 2 November weparticipated in lsquoNude Food Dayrsquo as awhole school Students wereencouraged to bring their lunch in a re-useable container with no plasticpackaging We saw some amazinglunches and 20 students were luckyenough to win a $5 canteen voucher touse before the end of the year Thanksto everyone who got on board to helpreduce rubbish and help keep ourCollege grounds clean and beautiful

On Thursday Week 5 our Year 10 BoysBasketball Team participated in the finalcarnival at Wayville and rounded out theyear in 5th place over all The highlightfor the day was our final win againstBlackwood after a 1 pt heartbreak lossagainst them in the second round (3-point on the buzzer with a free throwafterwards) It was a hot gruelling dayfor our squad which was considerablysmaller in numbers than some of theother teams but they did us proud Our Year 10 Girls Baksetball Team alsoplayed in the State Finals out at PtAdelaide They did extremely well andwon their first two games convincinglyover Windsor Gardens and BalaklavaThis saw them through to the State Finalwhere they ran into an extremely strongand well drilled Whyalla team where theyunfortunately fell short Similar to the boys it was an extremelyhot day in the stadiums and our girls dida fantastic job getting where they did andcan be extremely proud of finishing 2ndin the State

On Friday 18 November the R-6Japanese Festival was held in the JuniorSchool Students from Year 6 organisedand facilitated a range of traditionalJapanese activities for the R-5 studentsto participate in and enjoy Theseincluded origami kendama kamifusentamaire manga stories ohajiki wateryoyos and a crowd favourite ndash sumosuits It was fantastic to see the Year 6students engage the Junior Schoolclasses with each activity and to havethe R-5 students join in with suchenthusiasm Lunch was shared on the Junior Schoolgreen and included nearly 200 staff andstudent Obento boxes delivered by agreat company who individually createdthem for our students In the afternoonstudents returned to their classrooms towatch a Japanese movie to wind downafter such an exciting day

On Friday 18 November the R-6Japanese Festival was held in the JuniorSchool Students from Year 6 organisedand facilitated a range of traditionalJapanese activities for the R-5 studentsto participate in and enjoy Theseincluded origami kendama kamifusentamaire manga stories ohajiki wateryoyos and a crowd favourite ndash sumosuits It was fantastic to see the Year 6students engage the Junior Schoolclasses with each activity and to havethe R-5 students join in with suchenthusiasm Lunch was shared on the Junior Schoolgreen and included nearly 200 staff andstudent Obento boxes delivered by agreat company who individually createdthem for our students In the afternoonstudents returned to their classrooms towatch a Japanese movie to wind downafter such an exciting day

Forty-five students from Years 2 to 7attended the annual opening of theWishing Tree at Kmart Mount Barker We were accompanied by MichelleHahn Bec Dodd Michelle Parkes KateThomas and three parent volunteers Many parents relatives and communitymembers were in the audience The children sang a twenty minute set ofChristmas Carols beautifully andrepresented the College with greatmaturity and grace It is a pleasure towork with them and the feedback fromKmart staff the audience and theSalvation Army personnel in attendancewas highly favourable Emily LovelockMusic

On Wednesday 2 November weparticipated in lsquoNude Food Dayrsquo as awhole school Students wereencouraged to bring their lunch in a re-useable container with no plasticpackaging We saw some amazinglunches and 20 students were luckyenough to win a $5 canteen voucher touse before the end of the year Thanksto everyone who got on board to helpreduce rubbish and help keep ourCollege grounds clean and beautiful

Forty-five students from Years 2 to 7attended the annual opening of theWishing Tree at Kmart Mount Barker We were accompanied by MichelleHahn Bec Dodd Michelle Parkes KateThomas and three parent volunteers Many parents relatives and communitymembers were in the audience The children sang a twenty minute set ofChristmas Carols beautifully andrepresented the College with greatmaturity and grace It is a pleasure towork with them and the feedback fromKmart staff the audience and theSalvation Army personnel in attendancewas highly favourable Emily LovelockMusic

On Wednesday 2 November weparticipated in lsquoNude Food Dayrsquo as awhole school Students wereencouraged to bring their lunch in a re-useable container with no plasticpackaging We saw some amazinglunches and 20 students were luckyenough to win a $5 canteen voucher touse before the end of the year Thanksto everyone who got on board to helpreduce rubbish and help keep ourCollege grounds clean and beautiful

Donrsquot forget OSHC can be used forongoing care or even if you just need usfor a few sessions We will have a widerange of activities on the program fromart and craft physical play gamescooking activities and heaps more Ifthere is an activity you would like us toprogram to help settle your child in ontheir first visit we are happy to add yoursuggestions to the program

Medical needsIf your child has medical needs it iscrucial we have these few thingsUp to date and signed action plan fromyour doctorMedication with prescription label (eg onthe canister of inhaler for asthma)indicating the name of prescribed childand what the medication isAll other paper work will be supplied bythe OSHC service (feel free to pop inbefore or after school care)

On Thursday Week 5 our Year 10 BoysBasketball Team participated in the finalcarnival at Wayville and rounded out theyear in 5th place over all The highlightfor the day was our final win againstBlackwood after a 1 pt heartbreak lossagainst them in the second round (3-point on the buzzer with a free throwafterwards) It was a hot gruelling dayfor our squad which was considerablysmaller in numbers than some of theother teams but they did us proud Our Year 10 Girls Baksetball Team alsoplayed in the State Finals out at PtAdelaide They did extremely well andwon their first two games convincinglyover Windsor Gardens and BalaklavaThis saw them through to the State Finalwhere they ran into an extremely strongand well drilled Whyalla team where theyunfortunately fell short Similar to the boys it was an extremelyhot day in the stadiums and our girls dida fantastic job getting where they did andcan be extremely proud of finishing 2ndin the State
