Automotive Technology SkillsUSA Texas State Conference

On April 1

st and 2

nd, students from the Miller Career & Technology Center (MCTC) Automotive

Technology program competed in the SkillsUSA Texas State Conference, held in Corpus Christi, TX. The students competed in the Student Job Skill Exhibit (project) competition, which showcases students’ abilities in rebuilding/remanufacturing components from automobiles that are typically rebuilt/remanufactured for use in the automotive industry. Students are required to follow industry-style procedures using industry-style tools and equipment during this process. In other words, students complete the same type of work as technicians currently working in the automotive repair industry. Part of the procedure also requires documentation of the entire process (including pictures, procedures, specifications, and test results) that is contained in an approved folder/binder. Students do the vast majority of this work outside of their regular automotive studies. At the State Conference, all Student Job Skill Exhibits are judged against strict criteria that are aimed at promoting professional work practices. Fifty percent (50%) of their score is from their documentation and the remaining 50% is from their project. Students competed against SkillsUSA students from across the state of Texas. All of our students’ projects won either 1

st or 2

nd place.

These are outstanding results! Congratulations to these students for their accomplishments!

Students who competed and their Student Job Skill Exhibits were as follows:

Building for the Future

In 2008 Miller Career & Technology Center underwent a major expansion & renovation. Over 70,000 square feet of

space was added to the first floor which included several new state-of-the art career programs. Miller is currently

under construction once again! The MCTC staff is very excited about the 40,000 square feet of space on the 2nd floor

that is now being renovated to add a cutting edge Allied Health area which will include a new Dental Assisting program,

all district-wide Health Science clinical rotations and Emergency Medical Technician programs, as well as Miller’s

current Pharmacy Tech program. A Manufacturing program will also be a newly added course. The 2nd floor programs

will open in 2017. A Cyber Security program will also be available to the students beginning in 2017. This summer our

Vet Med program will be renovated with a new cutting edge lab ready to open this August, 2016.

Recycling at MCTC

Join our recycling program! Single Stream recycling bins are available throughout the campus for paper, plastic,

aluminum, glass, and most other recyclables.

What else can you do to help?

Miller Career & Technology Center wants your paper. Please help us earn money by depositing your household paper

in the Paper Retriever bin every week. If 400 families put their paper in the Paper Retriever bin each week, our school

would collect more than 4000 pounds or 2.0 tons of paper per week.

Deposit your school paper, office paper, newspaper, catalogs, magazines,

junk mail, and envelopes in the Paper Retriever recycling bin every week.

Our school and the environment thank you!

Cosmetology Performs Makeovers in the Community

On Saturday, May 7th, several of our cosmetology students performed hair services and makeup for

the 8th grade students at Katy Junior High for their 8

th grade dance. The junior high girls were

extremely excited to receive the services, and the Cosmetology students were thrilled to not only have the experience, but to also see the transformations and smiles on the girls’ faces! The pictures are from a power point presentation titled “The Miller Experience!” which was provided by Katy Jr. High’s Diagnostic Specialist, Tiffanye Dorsey, who worked with MCTC to make this event possible.

Procedures to Earn Spring Semester Exam Exemptions

Second semester exam exemptions will be offered for students who have met the state’s 90% attendance requirement, which means they must have enrolled on or before January 15, 2016. If a student has not been in attendance in any school and enrolls after the above date, he/she is not eligible for second semester credit and exemptions unless/until he/she completes the requirements established by the individual campus attendance committee. For those students enrolling from other districts/states who have previously attended a school, their attendance for this year will be considered in determining eligibility. If more than three days of school have been missed as absence and/or for moving, the student will not be eligible for spring semester exemptions.

Students may earn exemption status by reaching the following standards during the second semester:

meet the district’s grade and attendance standards for the 4th, 5th, and 6th six-weeks and application

requirements (see bolded section below)

have NO conduct grade of U in any class;

have no Level 2, 3, 4, or 5 offenses (as outlined in KISD Discipline Plan and Student Code of Conduct) that result in more than a combined total of six (6) hours of any type of detention, or any in-school or out of school suspension, or higher consequences.

owe no fines or fees.

District grade, attendance and application requirements for earning exemption status:

Course average of A (90 – 100) with no more than 3 absences

Course average of B (80 – 89) with no more than 2 absences

Course average of C (75 – 79) with no more than 1 absence

-A student may not exempt a class in which he/she has an N in conduct -For exemption purposes, three tardies to a class will equal one absence -Classes are independent of one another for attendance and grades -Students must meet campus requirements related to submission deadlines, verification procedures for securing their exemptions.

Ninth grade students may exempt one exam* Tenth grade students may exempt two exams* Eleventh grade students may exempt three exams* Twelfth grade students may exempt all exams during the spring semester*

*With the exception of seniors, students cannot exempt the same class both semesters. In other words

spring semester exam exemption class must be different than the fall semester class, except for seniors.

*Students are required to attend school during exam week for all classes/courses (band, choir, study hall, student assistant, athletics, etc.) unless an exam exemption has been earned in that specific class.

NOTE: HCCS dual-credit courses CANNOT be exempted.

Semester exam exemptions will be offered during the Spring Semester for the 2015-2016 school year. Below are exemption procedures for Spring Semester.

►►►A student who meets all requirements except the attendance requirement may apply for an exemption consideration of 1-2 additional absences if the student believes these resulted from extenuating

circumstances. See the grade level principal for the application. ◄◄◄
