SASKATCHEWAN CONTINUES TO EMBRACE THE EQUINE INDUSTRY AT THE THIRD ANNUAL SASKATCHEWAN EQUINE EXPO IN SASKATOON

In excess of 9,000 horse enthusiasts passed through the doors at Saskatoon Prairieland Park for the third annual Saskatchewan Equine Expo, February 14-16, 2014. The three-day event, presented in partnership with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) and the Saskatchewan Horse Federa on (SHF), featured educa onal seminars presented by the WCVM, clinicians Jonathan Field and Connie Dorsch, Canada’s Ul mate Cow Horse Compe on, seven breeds compe ng in the fi rst Ba le of The Breeds, demonstra ons by the Mounted Cow Dog Associa on, Sanquine Clydesdale Heavy Horse Hitch and Living Skies Vaul ng Club, an industry trade show and the highlight of the weekend - the Trainers Challenge. The Friday and Saturday evening Equine Extravaganza thrilled a standing room only audience.

Results: The Trainer’s Challenge, sponsored by NAERIC was won by Doug Mills from Kamloops, BC.

Suzon Schall of Calgary, took the Canada’s Ul mate Cow Horse Compe on championship buckle and a purse of $3350.00. A new event this year was the Ba le of the Breeds, sponsored by Pharmasave – Team Quarter Horse captured the most points winning the challenge and the event was defi nitely a crowd pleaser.

Over 200 tradeshow booths featured everything from saddles and driving equipment to jewelry, western wear and art. Many of the vendors were promo ng the latest in feed supplements and alterna ve therapy for both horse and rider.

The evening performances of the Equine Extravaganza were a highlight and a racted a standing room only crowd again. Due to the large crowds a separate loca on was available for people to view the performances via live video/audio feed. This was well received and plans are already underway to improve the technical services for this event.

Agriculture Department upcoming events:

We are excited to welcome the World Professional Chuckwagon Associa on back for a second year – 4 days of racing will take place June 5-8th. Uncoopera ve weather shortened our races last year to 2 days so we are all hoping for sunshine and a dry track for 2014.

Jr Ag Showcase in July brings 4H members from across the province to Saskatoon to take part in educa onal ac vi es and good natured compe ons.

During the Saskatoon Ex, the Agriculture Department welcomes the Prince Albert Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Associa on as they take over Marquis Downs race track to thrill audiences to chuckwagon and chariot races Thursday – Sunday.

THEY’RE OFF………MAY 30!Another exci ng season of thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs will be kicking off on Friday May 30. This year will feature 26 days of racing with post me at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. Marquis Downs off ers free admission and parking every race night.

As in the past a strong horse popula on is expected and with 13 jockeys arriving from Trinidad and Jamaica, it should make for a very compe ve jockey colony. With that being said each and every night should provide the race fan with high quality racing along with some fantas c wagering opportuni es.

The focal point of the Thoroughbred race season will be the $20,000 Saskatchewan Derby to be run on Saturday, September 6. Once again we can expect horses from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan to compete in the 54th running of the Derby.

For reserva ons in the Terrace Dining Room or the Marquis Cookhouse, contact Greg Monson at 683-8839. * Be sure to book early!
