along with the South Bay Workforce Investment Board invite you to join us for an introduction to California’s

Green Workforce Coalition’s goals for preparing a green workforce that responds to industry demands and

supports economic development and growth in California.

This will be an opportunity to meet with several Industry Professionals, Employers, Training Programs and learn about the various resources that are currently available.

2011 has been an eventful year and it is hard to believe that we are already in Fall. I would like to thank our delegates for an outstanding 2011 LIUNA Convention. Recently, our Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, was a guest at the Laborers Training School. Ms. Solis has motivated our graduating classes for several years and I admire her sense of motivation and the tenacity that she strikes in each new journeyman. Management Co-Chair, Chuck Poss, and I had the opportunity to speak to her about our school’s structure. Ms. Solis asked about our training network and she wanted to know how we are able to deliver programming throughout Southern California. I shared with her that similar to our Health and Welfare Trust Fund, we need to provide services in various geographic areas that meet our members’, contractors’ and local unions’ needs. It was a pleasure speaking to her and showing her our fixed and mobile training sites. Hilda Solis requested that I share our training network with our readers so that everyone can see what a powerful training program we offer.

In addition to our fixed and mobile training locations, we have designed a training network that is able to reach contractors at various jobsites and yards. Contractors such as Penhall Company, Griffith Company, McCarthy Construction, Crown Fence, Matich Corporation, Miller Environmental and Kaiser Construction appreciate our ability to mobilize our training according to their needs. Our ability to take training to contractors’ jobsites and yards demonstrates our commitment to service customers no matter the location. Contractors also appreciate the fact that we establish an agreement that meets the needs of both parties, which gives them more control over their training needs. Training that is widespread, that caters to contractors in remote areas and provides a well trained workforce is essential. With bright and motivated staff and administrators, I speak for all Trustees when I say, “Our facilities and structure define who we are and how we have prepared for the future.”

On June 16, 2011 the Laborers Training School and Apprenticeship Program was awarded accreditation of its training services through the International Accreditation Service (IAS). IAS accreditation attests to Laborer’s commitment to the highest standards of quality and integrity in its training services, as independently verified through a rigorous on-site assessment process. Accreditation was awarded to 35 of the School’s training programs, in areas of construction, environmental, professional development, safety and health, and construction supervision. IAS is an internationally recognized accreditation body which is a wholly-owned not-for-profit subsidiary of the International Code Council (ICC). IAS is one of the oldest and largest accreditation bodies in the world, with clients in over 28 countries.
