2015 Lobsterfest was a great success because of the amazing support of our community, sponsors and volunteers.

Then on Oct. 22, our education committee held the 3rd Annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon for our monthly membership luncheon. We had the honor of recognizing the teachers of the year from Conroe ISD, Montgomery ISD and Willis ISD. Each of the superintendents spoke and we presented a plaque and very nice goodie bag to all of the honorees. Our sponsors allowed for these great gifts along with m more than $500 of gift certificates given out as well.

The following day, the board of directors for your chamber met for the entire day to discuss, plan and critique the chamber. The new 2016 board members joined us as we reviewed the “State of the Chamber” and saw the projected outcomes for 2015. We analyzed the feedback from the US Chamber of Commerce and our strategic plan to ensure it aligns and we are on the right path for our community. Then we brainstormed short term goals for 2016 and started the planning for 2020 which is not that far away. The year 2020 is very important to our chamber as it will be the last step of the next three year strategic plan (2018-20) and will be the year we submit for reaccreditation. Your board and staff are focused to make sure our planning and future operations stay ahead of the growth of our area.

In closing, Nov. 3 is very important to Montgomery County. Please go and vote if you have not already done so. From the road bond to school bonds (Conroe ISD and Willis ISD) and other important elections, do your civic duty and vote. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “those who stay away from the election think that one vote will do no good. 'Tis but one step more to think one vote will do no harm.”

Please VOTE and remember to shop Chamber members during the Holidays!!

Ihope you had a great October! I can hardly believe there is only two more months of 2015 left. October is one of the most important months for our

Chamber due to the fact it includes a bit of everything we stand for.

We literally kicked off the month with our annual fundraiser, Lobsterfest, on Oct. 1. This event is more than just one of the best and largest community events, it is substantial to our operations as the chamber. From the golf, to the dinner and the auctions the

Making a Difference a nonprofit highlight

60 Years of Providing Local Solutions to Local ProblemsTo many, Montgomery County is a special place to call home. Rich in Texas history, known as the birthplace of the Lone Star State Flag, Montgomery County continues to make its presence known being named one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. Perhaps what Montgomery County residents are most proud of though, is their unique sense of community and desire to help out a neighbor in need.

For 60 years, Montgomery County United Way has been the local resource for strengthening the community by improving

lives and dedicating their work to creating a positive, lasting change in and around Montgomery County.

Montgomery County United Way’s goal each year is to find local solutions to local problems using local support. When donations are made in Montgomery County, whether through individual giving or workplace giving, those dollars stay local and are used for goals that are special to the needs of Montgomery County.

Through strategic funding and decision making, Montgomery County has seen a great deal of growth in the priority areas of Education, Financial Independence, and Health & Wellness. An increased percentage of students completing post-secondary education and/or job training certification, a reduced rate of financially unstable households, and an increase in the number of residents achieving a healthy weight by the year 2020 are just a few of Montgomery County United Way’s goals addressing the local issues Montgomery County residents face.

Equal to Montgomery County United Way’s focus on strategic planning and funding local issues, is their focus on actively engaging members of the community in volunteerism. “Days of Caring” is a United Way program in Montgomery County where individuals, groups, and companies can donate their time to different projects and organizations in need. One such project recently highlighted is Panther Creek Inspiration Ranch. The ranch focuses on equine therapy for individuals who struggle with social, emotional, and physical disabilities.

Chanda, a recent volunteer at Panther Creek Inspiration Ranch, took her 7 year old son with her to give their time working on different improvement projects around the ranch. He was thrilled to meet one of their therapy horses, named Zorro, and hear all about the work the ranch does for children, many his exact same age. As her son was learning about the work the ranch does, Chanda’s eyes were

opened to the actual cost of running the ranch, discovering that only 10% of the participants’ tuition covers the ranch’s operating expenses. After this revelation, she became even further motivated to help both monetarily and through her gift of time.

Not only was Chanda inspired by what she learned at the ranch, she was extremely moved by the lesson her son was able to learn. As they left the ranch, he asked his mom when they could go back by explaining, “The more we help, the more kids the ranch can help.” At just 7 years old, Chanda’s son was able to experience the kind of selfless giving it takes to create community level change, which is something neither one of them will soon forget.

Montgomery County United Way also works to create volunteer opportunities in the community, as a whole, and not just on

the programs and organizations it funds. HelpOurCounty.org does just that. It’s a great web resource not only for people who would like to sign up to volunteer, but for organizations or causes who are in need of volunteers. Anyone can register to volunteer, and any non-profit organization can

join and post their needs for volunteers on the site. From causes involving culture and arts to reading to students to feeding the homeless, HelpOurCounty.org was designed to do just that – help Montgomery County.

In 2014, Montgomery County United Way raised $5.7 million and logged over 8 thousand volunteer hours for improving Montgomery County lives. It is only through the care and support of local donors and volunteers, that Montgomery County United Way has been able to help countless families and change thousands of lives over the last 6 decades.

While celebrating this diamond anniversary, Montgomery County United Way continues to look forward and plan for many more lives that will be changed in the next 60 years.

For more information on how you can give to, advocate for, or volunteer with Montgomery County United Way, visit www.mcuw.org or call 281.292.4155.

WOULD A PLUMBER FEED DOGS AND CATS OR WARM A SENIOR CITIZEN?

Locally, the answer would be yes! Our locally owned and family operated Mr. Rooter® Plumbing does just that and more. Since Spring 2014, your local Mr. Rooter® has collected and donated more than five TONS of dog or cat food to our Montgomery County and Conroe Animal Shelters. Mr. Rooter®, along with their customers, have accomplished this in a joint effort. Mr. Rooter® offers $50 OFF any plumbing service when a customer donates at least one bag or six cans of dog or cat food at the time of service.

During this time of year, November 1st through December 31, families are giving gifts to one another, sharing family fun, festive meals, and when it is cold, sharing a fireplace or maybe just a warm home. Mr. Rooter® knows that during this time of year,

what might have been a pet at one time, is now found to be homeless. Since the owners of Mr. Rooter® adopted a “Rescue Boxer” named Jiggles “Jiggs,” she became the spokes “dog” for the past two years, conducting dog and cat food drives. Jiggs crossed over the rainbow bridge

in late June, but her legacy will continue to live on in our community. In September, Roger and Natalie once again adopted another “Rescue Boxer” named Gretta. This year, during the same time frame of November 1 through December 31, Gretta and Mr. Rooter®, along with their customers, will once again be collecting dog and cat food while offering $50 OFF any plumbing service.

During the holidays, Mr. Rooter® also collects blankets, socks and slippers for our local senior citizens. It was during the “Jiggs” food drive that Roger and Natalie found that in some cases, our area has a number of senior citizens who are found to either be forgotten by their families, have few family members left or have none at all. It is because of these seniors

Page 9: In this issue - Lake Conroe · 2020-02-19 · Dr. Don Stockton, Conroe Independent School District Hector Forestier, City of Willis George Waggoner, First National Bank Texas Don

9

that Mr. Rooter® collects blankets, socks and slippers, which are given during Interfaith’s Christmas Luncheon. In fact, if you look close enough, you will find the staff at Mr. Rooter® volunteering at the luncheon to help serve food while passing out collected blankets, socks and slippers.

So would a plumber feed dogs and cats or warm a Senior Citizen? Mr. Rooter® does… all the while offering PEACE OF MIND when it comes to providing plumbing services to local Montgomery County residents. Mr. Rooter® has been given numerous local and national awards for Outstanding Service. Don’t be surprised to find promotions during the holidays on items such as new garbage disposals (older ones get overworked during holidays, families and usually larger meal preparations), new water heaters (tank or tankless) that will keep those guests well supplied with hot water and warm showers, cold weatherization services that prevents costly damage and repairs, or a new water softener or whole house water filtration system that the whole family can enjoy for years to come.

For more information on donating dog/cat food, warming a Senior Citizen, needing a plumbing repair or new plumbing appliance, Mr. Rooter® is your hometown, locally owned “more than just a plumbing company” and can be reached at (936) 539-4000.

LEADERSHIP MONTGOMERY COUNTY CLASS OF 2016

LEARNS ABOUT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTIN MONTGOMERY COUNTY

The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2016 recently explored economic development in the county at their Economic Development Session. The session was sponsored by long-time supporters of Leadership Montgomery County, The Woodlands Township, with their special Economic Development Partnership with LMC.

Session Directors Gil Staley, CEO of The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership and Danielle Scheiner, deputy director of the Greater Conroe Economic Development Council, planned the session for the class that began at Strike, LLC in Hughes Landing.

The day began with the Leadership Development Series, sponsored by Repsol and led by Chad Patterson along with LMC alumni facilitators. The series was followed by a panel of economic development experts from throughout the region. The panel consisted of Fred Welch, Greater Conroe Economic Development Council; Nick Wolda, The Woodlands Township; Elizabeth Huff, Greater Houston Partnership; Gil Staley, The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership; and John Tarver, Entergy Texas. Class members were given the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the panel throughout the morning.

The class then boarded a bus for a driving tour of Conroe Park

North and the Deison Technology Park. The class arrived at Lone Star College – Conroe Center for a tour of their Workforce Training Facility.

After lunch and class project discussion, the class heard from another Economic Development Panel including Tana Ross from the City of Magnolia, Shannan Reid from the City of Montgomery, Susan Cates from the City of Oak Ridge North and Hector Forestier from the City of Willis. Following the panel, Pravin Tampi, VP of global procurement and supply chain for Newpark, spoke to the class about why Newpark chose Montgomery County.

The class then toured the Borden Plant in Conroe, before ending the day back at Strike.

Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated cultivating the future leaders of Montgomery County. The mission of LMC is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County.

The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Chamber of Commerce, the Community Chamber of East Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber, and the Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce are all partner Chambers in the LMC program. Participants are chosen by application process in June of each year. For more information about Leadership Montgomery County, please visit LMCTX.org.

Business Insight withTexas Air Shuttle&AQ

Q. Why are you in business? A. We’re in business for two reasons — 1. We’re aviation enthusiasts. Our founder has flown planes his entire life, through his military and professional careers and 2. We saw a real need in the business community in Houston and other major cities to offer a more streamlined approach to domestic air travel. Commercial flights are overcrowded, overpriced and there are constant frustrations with the traditional air travel business model. We decided to combine our proven experience in the industry and our passion for aviation with a smart business approach to create our All-You-Can-Fly air membership model. Q. What is your background? A. Co-founder, retired military pilot, Kenneth D. Haney is the founder and chairman of Texas Air Shuttle, an innovative air transportation alternative to traditional air and car travel. With more than 35 years’ experience in aviation, 22 years with a major airline, Capt. Haney is qualified to fly B757, B767, A320, A319, B727, B737, B747-200 and 747-400 aircraft. He is also qualified to fly Cobra and Apache Attack Helicopters and RC 12 Military Intelligence aircraft. Capt. Haney served in the United States Army from 1978-1992, and graduated from the Warrant Officer Academy in 1982. He was appointed by Congress to the rank of Warrant Officer, then receiving his military wings. He served in various locations around the world and was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, S.E. Asia Combat Ribbon, the Prestigious Aviation Broken Wing Award and the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in combat during Desert Storm. Capt. Haney was selected from the top one percent of all officers to train on the RC 12, which was deployed to Korea in 1992 for military intelligence work. Steve Geldmacher, co-founder and CEO of Texas Air Shuttle holds more than 30 years’ experience in management and leadership roles within the energy, aviation and telecom industries, and served as a key executive in the startup and expansion of Sprint, the fastest growing company to reach $10 billion in annual revenue in US history. Both founders’ backgrounds are qualified to take Texas Air Shuttle to new heights because of the aviation and business acumen combined. Q. Do you have employees? How many? A. We have between 10-20 employees; however, we’re always looking for qualified candidates.

10013 Military Dr.Conroe, TX 77303

844-IFLYTASwww.txairshuttle.com

Q. How does your company differentiate itself? A. Texas Air Shuttle differentiates itself in a variety of ways: All of our planes have two twin turboprop engines and two pilots, meaning safety is a way of life for us. We also offer customers no lines, valet parking and arrival 15 minutes prior to your flight’s departure. We keep our process as simple and smooth as possible to allow our members the ability to get the most out of their day.

We are the sole owners and operators of our aircraft and services. Because we maintain operational control over our aircraft, we have the ability to pass along savings to our members and ensure flight availability, providing the high quality service our members expect. Did we mention All-You-Can-Fly?

Q. How did you get started in this business? A. We saw a real need to address the problems associated with traditional commercial air travel. After discussing it from the aviation and business angels, we came up with our business strategy and so far, we’ve found that our company has really resonated with executives and business men and women everywhere. Q. How long have you been in business? A. Texas Air Shuttle was founded in 2014.
