DIA’s Hotel and Transit Center and the two tower cranes that have been essential for building the complex. The cranes will soon be dismantled.

The view from atop the crane is spectacular, assuming you’re not afraid of heights. On clear days, operators can see south of Pikes Peak and north beyond Rocky Mountain National Park. Not much time is wasted on sightseeing, however, because lives often depend on clear communication with ground crews who assist with frequent blind lifts that are not in the crane operator’s line of sight.

“There were times when an elevator shaft or other structures on the site blocked the crane operator’s view, so he relied solely on the communication he received from the ground team,” said HTC General Superintendent Charlie Prewitt. “It requires very clear and precise communications between the two to successfully orchestrate the move.”

Crews have begun to diassemble the west tower crane. It will take approximately 320 manhours to dissamble both cranes. When in smaller pieces, the cranes will be hauled to a storage yard to be checked out very quickly and moved to another job, as they are in high demand.

Have you ever wondered how tower cranes are erected? While types and models vary, this six-minute video by San Marco Cranes shows how it is done!

Automated Passport Control Kiosks Debut at DIA Denver International Airport unveiled 16 BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks on Oct. 23, 2014, to expedite the customs entry process for international travelers

This service is available without pre-registration and at no cost to the user.

Instead of filling out a declaration card and taking travel documents to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, eligible passengers choosing to use APC can proceed directly to a self-service kiosk within Denver’s Customs area.

International Airport (PTY) will operate daily November through August and five times weekly in September and October.

DIA now has 16 Automated Passport Control kiosks to expedite Customs processing.

Eligible passengers are U.S. and Canadian passport holders, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents and returning international travelers with Electronic System for Travel Authorization from 38 countries not requiring U.S. entry visas, including Australia, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Travelers follow the on-screen instructions to scan their passport, use the touch screen to answer the customs declaration questions, receive a receipt confirming their information, and proceed to baggage claim within DIA’s international arrivals area. Before exiting Denver’s CBP location, travelers will show their receipt to the CBP officer to finalize processing.

Through a competitive bid process, Innovative Travel Solutions – a business unit within Vancouver Airport (YVR) Authority dedicated to APC development – won the bid to install and maintain BorderXpress APC kiosks at DIA for a contract amount of $868,000 over five years. Users of the APCs can select instructions from among 10 languages.

Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority, said, “YVRs BorderXpress kiosks provide a quick, easy and secure alternative to the traditional full clearance process by partially automating the inspection declaration procedure. As a result, airports can process four times more passengers per CBP officer to dramatically

cut wait times.”

Duty Free and Specialty Retail To Be Added Next Summer DIA is greatly expanding the amount of square footage dedicated to duty-free shopping on all three concourses, from a total of about 1,056 square feet today, to a total of about 6,000 square feet.

By next summer A and B gates will have new combination tax- and duty-free/duty-paid retailers, and a specialty retail location will open at C Gates.

Denver Duty Free, a joint venture, will operate the concessions. Dufry North America, Odd Tale Books and Wystone’s World Teas Holdings are the partners in the joint venture. Odd Tale Books and Wystone’s World Teas Holdings are both certified under the federal Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program, which ensures fair competition for women- and minority-owned businesses in airport concessions.

DIA’s contract with Denver Duty Free calls for the concessionaire to develop, operate and manage the new Dufry-branded tax- and duty-free/duty-paid locations, offering a variety of luxury items that include fashion accessories, cosmetics, perfumes and more. The award includes a 2,315-square-foot Dufry shop in the center of Concourse A; a 2,328-square-foot Dufry shop on the mezzanine level of Concourse B Center Core; and a 1,390-square-foot specialty retail shop called Mile High Glamour at the center core of Concourse C. Mile High Glamour will initially be duty-paid, but could become a third duty-free/duty-paid location later on.

“The number of passengers on international flights at Denver International Airport has grown by about 20 percent so far this year, and those travelers are looking for different retail opportunities than our typical domestic traveler,” said airport CEO Kim Day. “This new duty-free/duty-paid retailer will provide our international passengers with the experience they expect, while also expanding the opportunities for our domestic travelers.”

The stores are expected to generate a combined $7.6 million in annual gross revenues and create 37 full- and part-time jobs.

Colorado on Tap ExhibitColorado on Tap: The State of Brew Culture is a temporary art exhibit that opened at DIA on Sept. 20, 2014. The exhibit will be on display through December 2014 in Ansbacher Hall, which is the pre-security walkway between A Gates and Jeppesen Terminal on Level 6.

The "Colorado on Tap" exhibit at DIA displays an assortment of beer bottles and brewery labels from state craft brewers.

The timing of the exhibit coincides with Oktoberfest and the Great American Beer Festival at the Colorado Convention Center, which draw thousands of visitors through DIA. Display cases showcase a variety of craft brewery-related items from various participating Colorado craft breweries. You’ll see growlers (basically bottles with handles), pub glasses, specialty glassware, coasters, tap handles, t-shirts, bottles, cans, and custom art created for beer labels. Visitors can learn about brewing ingredients, the brewing process and beer canning systems.

The "Colorado on Tap" exhibit at DIA showcases the scores of craft brewers who operate in Colorado. The exhibit displays many of the varied and colorful craft labels.

“The goal of this exhibit is to provide passengers an opportunity to better understand the craft beer industry and its contributions to the Colorado creative economy,” said Chris Stevens, DIA art and culture program manager.

Colorado on Tap is a collaboration between DIA, Colorado Creative Industries, Colorado Brewers Guild, and more than 250 craft breweries in the state.

Front-range craft breweries may be more familiar to you, but 39 mountain and western-slope towns are represented in the display. Colorado’s westernmost breweries are in Fruita, and the state’s easternmost is in Las Animas.

“Colorado has become such a mecca for quality beer,” says Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who is quoted as a part of the display. “The economic impact of Colorado’s craft brewing industry has nearly doubled in just the past two years, rising to $826 million in 2013.”

An overturned basket in the "Colorado on Tap" exhibit at DIA shows the hop plant buds used in brewing beer.

Boulder Beer Company’s brewmaster and owner, David Zucherman, also quoted as part of the display, says, “In 1979 we became Colorado’s first craft brewery and were issued the 43rd brewing license in the country.”

P.J. Goudreault, head brewer at the Aspen Brewery Co., tells exhibit visitors, “My interest grew from buying mixed six packs at the liquor stores, visiting as many breweries as I could, and home brewing with my college roommates.”

Colorado on Tap explains that Colorado has the highest percentage of draft beer consumed in the United States, and more than 10 percent of Colorado’s craft brewers export their brews globally.

End of Wright Amendment Allows Southwest Airlines To Fly Between Dallas Love Field and Denver Since 1980, a law known as the “Wright Amendment” has limited the routes that Southwest and other airlines could fly from Dallas’ older, more convenient airport, Love Field (DAL).

Workers at Southwest Airlines corporate headquarters in Dallas celebrate the repeal of the Wright Amendment, which allows the airline to fly nonstop anywhere in the United States from Dallas Love Field. Southwest has added Denver as destination from Love Field.

The law allowed nonstop flights from Love Field only to Texas cities and to four states adjoining Texas. A compromise allowed Congress to repeal the Wright Amendment, which ended on Oct. 13, 2014. Southwest or any other airline can now fly nonstop from DAL to anywhere within the United States—but not internationally.

Southwest Airlines founder Herb Kelleher celebrates the end of the Wright Amendment at Dallas Love Field.

As soon as the Wright Amendment expired, Southwest began flying to and from seven cities (including Denver) that previously were off-limits because of the law. Southwest will add eight more cities on Nov. 2, 2014, and an additional two destinations on Jan. 6, 2015.

A nonstop flight to Denver was Southwest’s first departure to a city added to their route structure at Love Field, following the end of the Wright Amendment on Oct. 13, 2014. Southwest celebrated the flight with decorations referencing Colorado.

The first new flight out of Dallas Love Field in the post-Wright era was bound for the Mile High City (6:40 a.m. departure). Early morning, Oct. 13, Southwest celebrated the occasion, inviting its founder, Herb Kelleher, and president emeritus, Colleen Barrett, to join current CEO Gary Kelly and Southwest employees at the departure gate.

Denver Film Society founder and former executive director, Ron Henderson, is curating the poster exhibit. Henderson began the Denver Film Society in 1978 with a vision of bringing a world-class film festival to Denver residents. Thirty-seven years later, the Starz Denver Film Festival is the largest regional festival of its kind and has helped put Denver on the cultural map for filmmakers and film lovers alike.

Aviation Statistics Airports Council International released the final 2013 tallies for world airports in the categories of aircraft movements (operations), total passengers and total cargo. Passenger traffic increased in all six global regions. The largest growth in passenger volume was in the Asia-Pacific region, followed closely by the Middle East. The growth in these regions is reflected in the 2013’s rankings for the top-10 airports by passenger volume. Beijing Capital International Airport has seen its annual passenger totals expand tremendously in the last five years, and it is now the second-busiest airport in the world. Tokyo International Airport Haneda and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia are among the top-10 busiest airports in the world. In the Middle East, Dubai International Airport was ranked 10th in 2012, but jumped to seventh in 2013.

Worldwide, 6.3 billion people chose air travel in 2013, up 4.6 percent over 2012.
