Dear Seton Catholic Family,
I am truly excited about everything that is going on here at Seton Catholic
Schools: the committed and talented teachers, enthusiastic students, and
many donors who help support the schools, particularly St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton parish community. We are here in the name of God, teaching and
equipping our students to encounter this world with love and responsibility.
This is our parish mission statement that I introduced on September 1, 2019:
As committed Christians of the Roman Catholic Church in Richmond, Indi-
ana, we are a community centered in Christ and rooted in the Eucharistic
communion, journeying together in our call to be holy, constantly discern-
ing the charisms of the spirit, making disciples of one another, seeking God’s kingdom in service, stewardship and
charity. Embracing this mission, our school will gear up soon to update the school mission statement as well.
At the Second Vatican Council in 1965, the Church articulated, "Holy Mother Church must be concerned with the
whole of man's life, even the secular part of it insofar as it has a bearing on his heavenly calling. Therefore, she has a
role in the progress and development of education," (Gravissimum Educationis, 1965, Preface). Here at Seton
Schools, we are concerned with the whole of our children’s lives. No aspect of their lives is left untouched that
makes them realize their best versions of themselves. For that reason, our mission of education remains pivotal in
the formation of the human person in cultivating values of fraternity and
friendship, so they can learn to be true children of God.
Again, in the light of the teachings of the Catholic Church, we want to see
the place of Seton Schools in the life of our students. “[Our school’s]
proper function is to create for the school community a special atmos-
phere animated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and charity, to help youth
grow according to the new creatures they were made through baptism as
they develop their own personalities, and finally to order the whole of hu-
man culture to the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students
gradually acquire of the world, life and man is illumined by faith” (GE 8,
1965). Seton Schools are committed to raising saints! We are dedicated
to teaching our students to live the truth with love. And, we are devoted to
forming our students in all spiritual, intellectual and moral spheres.
Forever grateful to God who seeks us and loves us in Christ, through his
Holy Spirit!
Fraternally yours,
Fr. Sengole Gnanaraj, STL

Dear Friends and Supporters of Seton Catholic Schools,
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff we thank you for your
willingness to share of your time, talent, and treasure with our
schools. Without your concern and devotion, Seton Catholic
Schools could not exist today. You know the importance of carrying on the mission of the Church through
Catholic education.
As we reflect on the 2018-2019 school year, we are reminded what a wonderful story we have to share with the
community. The hard work of our students and faculty is reflected in success both in and out of the classroom.
We are watching our alumni soar and know that opportunities provided to them at Seton Catholic have been in-
strumental in shaping their lives.
We are providing a foundation for young people that they are not getting other places. We are very excited about
the future and working with our new pastor Father Sengole. Thank you for always supporting our mission.
Thank you for always encouraging us. Thank you for always giving hope and possibilities to our students and our
community. We are blessed through you.
Peace in Christ,
John Markward Kim Becker

A Partnership to Save Lives
In May of 2010 Seton Catholic High
School and the Community Blood
Center (CBC) came together to form
a partnership to save lives. Since
that time, through the help of
students, staff, parents, parishioners
and community supporters, Seton
Catholic has helped to register 983
donors, collected 802 pints and
helped save approximately 2,406
lives.
Seton Catholic added to its blood
drive legacy in the 2017-2018 school
year by winning the CBC $1,000 High
School Leadership grant for “Highest
Percentage of Enrollment Donating”
for the third consecutive year. It
marked Seton’s fifth grant award in
the last four years.
“We have about 80 students in ninth
through 12th grade, and most of
those kids donate every time,” said
Principal Markward. “They’re the
ones that get everyone signed up at
lunch.” Principal Markward is a reg-
ular donor at Seton’s blood drives
too. “I think it is fun to give back,”
he said. “Back when I was 17 was
the first time I did it, and it’s some-
thing I still do.”
Seton Catholic is one of the smallest
of the 116 high schools hosting
blood drives in CBC’s 15-county
region, yet its dominance in the
“Highest Percentage of Enrollment”
category increases every year.
In 2017-2018 participation was 195
percent of eligible enrollment.
Seton won the same category in
2016-2017 with 175 percent, and in
2015-2016 with 152 percent.
Two grants we earned in 2014-2015
for “Second Highest Percentage of
Enrollment” and “Most Improved.”
Seton Catholic shares the record of
five grant awards with Fairmont
High School and Butler Tech, two of
the largest schools in CBC’s region.
Recently Principal Markward was
presented with a $2,000 check for
the 2018-2019 year donations and
had this to say, “We are very proud
of these accomplishments and
thankful to the commitment of our
community.”

Many of these funds are managed by the Wayne
County Foundation. We would like to extend our
gratitude to them for taking such good care of the-
se resources for us, so that we may continue to of-
fer this type of assistance to our students.
Our students also receive tuition support through The Institute for Quality
Education, a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) that manages funds
from individual and business donors that make the donation to the organiza-
tion and designate Seton Catholic Schools as the beneficiary school. We thank
Father John Luerman, Mr. Phillip Morgan, Mr. John Kutter, Dr. Sam Krutz,
and Mr. Anthony Cooper for choosing to support Seton Catholic through their
donations to this SGO during the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
We are deeply grateful for the generosity of those that have shared their
treasures with our students, so that they can pursue an education that allows
them to prepare themselves academically for life after high school, while at
the same time provides them with an environment in which they can nurture
their spiritual life and continue to grow closer to God. Thank you to all of our
generous donors.

nizing the class of students for their
achievements. 74% of the gradu-
ates completed their four years
with an Academic Honors Diplo-
ma. 74% were members of the Na-
tional Honor Society. Before
graduation they had accumulated
189 hours of college credit and
completed 41 AP courses. In total,
the class of 2018 earned college
scholarships and grants valued at
$3.0 million in merit based scholar-
ship offers.
Joseph Lahmann, Valedictorian,
and Nathan Dickman, Salutatorian,
both addressed their classmates, as
did Mr. Rob Rash, the Assistant
Superintendent of Schools for the
Archdiocese.
Trent Reichley received the Arch-
bishop Tobin Christian Leadership
Award, the most prestigious award
given by the school. It recognizes
a graduating senior who has
demonstrated excellence in schol-
arship, outstanding character, in-
spired leadership, and genuine gen-

During the spring sports season we
had some very strong performances
by our athletes. Our varsity softball
team with a 13-5 record, finished
second in the PAAC, and were sec-
tional runner-ups. Cassidy Frame,
Taylor Haager, Paige Klaine, and
Lydia Reichley all earned All-
Conference honors. Our varsity
baseball team finished with a 14-10
record. Luke Leverton was named
PAAC Player of the Year while
Tyson Bray, Louie Falcone, and
Vincent Falcone earned All-
Conference honors. In varsity
track, Erica Barker and Jaden
Swiderek were conference champi-
ons. Barker was also a sectional
champion and Joseph Lahmann
was a regional qualifier. The varsi-
ty tennis team also had strong per-
formances with the doubles team of
Suzanne Becker and Emma Ber-
ger ,advancing to the second round
of sectionals.
In junior high sports, both track
teams and golf had very solid sea-
sons. The highlight for the season
was having both boys’ and girls’
track teams win PAAC Champion-
ships. This marked the first middle
school conference championships
for our track teams.
The fall sports season is now upon
us. We will be offering the high
school sports of boys and girls
cross country, boys soccer, and vol-
leyball. We will be offering the
junior high sports of boys and girls
cross country and volleyball.

“The teacher who has
had the greatest impact
on me is Mrs. Hornak. I am very
interested in the medical field, and
the subjects that Mrs. Hornak teach-
ers are exactly what I need to learn
in order to become a successful doc-
tor. For me, she teaches in a way
that I think is the best way to learn.
Her ability to cover the material
well and incorporate labs and as-
signments is incredible, and they
help me understand the material so
much better. Her tests are challeng-
ing, and yet, when I study what she
has taught us, I feel very prepared.
Her teaching style for me works
very well, and her personality is one
that I enjoy, in addition to her class-

“I chose Mr. Reichley
as the teacher who has had the great-
est impact on me in all of my years
at Seton Catholic because he has
inspired me and guided me through-
out my high school years. He is
very insightful and has an answer to
almost every question. He also val-

a great job integrating Catholic
teaching into ordinary math courses.
Overall, he is a very good teacher
and does his very best to educate his
students.”

“When I was younger
and taking Mr. Markward’s class, he
was always willing to stay after
school or help me after class as well
as coming in early to school to help
me if needed. Mr. Markward has
always looked out for me and gotten
me to the point of growth to become
a more mature person that is ready
for college. Whenever I either have
just wanted to talk or needed to talk,
he has always been there for me,
taking time out of his day to help me
through hard times as well as just
talk about things to laugh. He is tru-
ly a role model and made me grow
the most throughout high school.”

“I chose Mrs. Dorsten
because from the moment I stepped
into her class, she offered me a chal-
lenge. Whenever I had an issue or
difficulty she helped by presenting a
solution. She also had a lot of faith
in me, as she let me join her AP
American History class, one of the
hardest courses in the school. Mrs.
Dorsten having that faith in me gave
me enough confidence to go and
achieve my goals.”
Mary Hannah
@ Seton Catholic
since 7th grade
“I chose Mr. Schroed-
er because he introduced me to a lot
of things and always pushed us to be
better. I got a whole new array of
experiences and memories while he
taught us responsibility, knowledge,
and music. He built up our music
department to what it is today and
it’s amazing. His class was the best
class!”
Zachary Houseman
@ Seton Catholic
since 5th grade
“Mr. Berger has given
me a great apprecia-
tion for English and books.”
David Seitz
@ Seton Catholic
since 7th grade
“I chose Mr. Reichley
because of his classroom environ-
ment. There was always something
to look forward to every day we
attended class.”
Gavin Smith
@ Seton Catholic
since 10th grade
“Mr. Reichley is an
amazing teacher and genuinely one
of the smartest people I’ve ever met.
Despite this, the most important
things he teaches are about life out-
side of the classroom.”
Jaden Swiderek
@ Seton Catholic
since 7th grade
“Mr. Berger knows
what is best after teaching upper-
classmen for many years. He has
led me in the right path and shown
me what I need to accomplish to get
to my specific goal. As well as do-
ing it for every other person older
than me since I began at Seton in the
7th grade.”
Chelsea Tate
@ Seton Catholic
since 5th grade
“I chose Mr. King be-
cause he makes me want to be
Catholic (maybe) and he makes me
want to be good.”

What exactly is a part-time job? Many of
you who are reading this may already know,
but for those that don’t: A part-time job is
where you go to a workplace such as
McDonalds, KFC, Taco Bell, or many other
establishments but you don’t work full
hours. Most students would say, “Oh, the
only benefit of having a part-time job is that
you get a little extra spending money,”
though, that statement is completely false.
There are so many more benefits to a part-
time job than what one would normally
think, and this article will tell you all about
those benefits.
BENEFITS OF A STUDENT HAVING A PART-TIME JOB
By: Kayla Kitchel, 10th Grade
YOU LEARN TO MANAGE YOUR MONEY When you start making your
own money, you tend to become more cautious when spending it. That cautiousness
eventually leads to you learning how to manage the money you make so you don’t run
out when you need it the most.
YOU GAIN TRANSFERABLE SKILLS You will gain skills that school
wouldn’t normally teach you on a daily basis such as working at a fast pace with other
people that you haven’t been around for most of your life. It pushes you to make bonds
quickly so that you can become a successful team in the end.
YOU DEVELOP INTERPERSONAL SKILLS With a part-time job, student
employment gives you an opportunity to learn how to interact with many different
personalities in the workplace whether the person is sweet, arrogant, independent, or
anything in between.
YOU GAIN INDEPENDENCE Once you gain your own sort of income and
have to manage your schedule in order to make it to work on time. Planning things out
gives you a sense of independence and that is a good thing to have in your daily life.
YOU LEARN GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT Since you have to plan around
your work schedule, you develop time management skills in order to make sure you get
everything done in time.
YOU GET ACCESS TO DISCOUNTS AND PERKS Since you are work-
ing for an organization, of course you may get perks whether it’s a discount or early
access to things in your industry.
YOU GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE It’s always a good thing to have work
experience. Colleges love to see that you have had some sort of job all while going to
school because it shows that you have good time management and you were willing to
push yourself out of your comfort zone in order to get the things that you want.

SETON CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ BUDGET 2018-19
We are blessed to have committed families, parishioners and community members who are willing to share their
time, talent and treasure with us. As you look at the bar graphs below, you will see that tuition alone does not cover
salary and benefits for our faculty and staff, let alone all remaining expenses. It takes a village and without your
prayers and financial gifts we would not be able to carry out the ministry of Seton Catholic Schools. Jesus is the
reason for this school. Thank you for your support!
