Are you entering a project in the fair that you are really proud of and learned from? Did you try something new this year that maybe did not go the way you planned, but you still learned from the mistakes? All of these things can be entered to receive an award for 4-H Annual Awards! It is a common misconception that youth can only apply for an award for a project that they entered into the fair, but that’s just not the case! 4-H Annual Awards is all about explaining what you’ve learned about a specific topic and how you have or plan to share that with others. Not only are youth able to apply for an award for a topic that they learned about, but they can also nominate other, like a Peer, for something awesome that they’ve done throughout the year, or maybe there is a Caring Adult in their 4-H life that they would like to have honored at the Awards Ceremony, there’s an award for that too. The applications for the 2020 Awards are available at this website. Now is a great time to start thinking about what you’ve learned this year. If you’d like to apply for an award for a project that you are entering into the fair, filling out the application while you are completing your goal sheet is a great way to get two things done at once! Beyond completing an application, youth will have the opportunity to interview with a judge and discuss their learning face to face. This is a great learning experience and helps youth to become more comfortable talking directly with others.

FOCUS

Keep up with deadlines and announcements related to Polk County 4-H.

Mindful Teen Workshop Series This summer Iowa 4-H piloted Mindful Teen: From Surviving to Thriving in a Busy World in a virtual setting. This program is 6 hours over the duration of 6 weeks where youth and facilitators meet to learn about mindfulness practices in a safe environment. Polk County 4-H is excited to offer this program in the fall for youth in Polk County. Check the Sept. issue of Clover Power for additional information on a fall program, and check out the press release from this summer to learn more!

County Council T-Shirt Fundraiser Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the one fundraiser that Polk County Council holds annually, the Pancake Breakfast, has been cancelled. If you would like to support the Polk County Council this year, check out their t-shirt fundraiser. All shirts are $12, $5 of which directly assists the County Council's continued projects. See the attached order form at the end of Clover Power or fill out the google form to order. If you are interested in simply donating directly to the County Council, please mail funds to the Polk County Extension Office and clearly mark what it is for. Order deadline has been extended until August 7, 2020 .

County Council Applications Applications for the 2020-2021 Polk County Council are open. The Polk County Council is a group of 30 high school aged youth who work together to plan events throughout the year and during the Polk County Fair. Youth are selected based on their application and interview with a 4-H volunteer. The applications can be found on our County Awards Page and are due Sept. 2, 2020 to Megan.

Enrollment for 2020-2021 This year our enrollment system will look a little different! 4-H online is transitioning to 4-H online 2.0, and with that there will be a new website to enroll on. Check back in the Sept. issue of Clover Power for details regarding this new system.
