From the President Spring 2017 Dear TASO Friends, Although it’s gone by much too quickly and I might be prejudiced a little, I think our year has been pretty successful. It’s been a pleasure to work with all of you and we’ve gotten so much accomplished. I hope you feel as good about everything as I do. In June we started our Golden Jubilee year with our Board meeting in the Meyerson. All the committees wasted no time getting right to work and soon things were running smoothly. I’m so happy that the chairmen made the most of their time, being efficient managers to handle business through conference calls or email work ahead of time or as follow-ups. In September the Juanita Miller Concerto Competition Committee, much of its preliminary work already done, readied themselves to get the word out to talented high school musicians and start accepting contestants. It’s amazing just how much work this committee does between September and January. After careful scrutiny and deliberation the outstanding projects and awards recipients were named and the Strategic Planning Committee continued to keep our heads spinning with so many forward thinking ideas to get us back on the track of strengthening our mission. I think TASO really shines in January. Besides the very busy business meeting, the JMCC is a highlight for sure. How do the judges ever decide on a winner? Every contestant has such an extra measure of talent. The future of Texas music is certainly in capable hands, don’t you think? We’ll all look forward to hearing the winners’ recital at our upcoming conference and hear them play their spectacular pieces one more time. Did you all find the Interactive Networking time that we scheduled at our January meeting beneficial? The small group discussions of What Works for Our Leagues and then What Doesn’t Work with possible solutions was good for all of us to hear. Thank you for participating and sharing. I only wish I had thought ahead of time to designate recorders for each group so we could keep a written track of what was shared and then distribute that on our website. I have a feeling this might be a work in progress. I know Strategic Planning and your new President Joi Smith have more planned for next year to guide TASO into becoming more of a forum for idea exchange. I’m getting excited about the 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee All-Host Conference in just a few short weeks! I hope all of you have made your reservations and gotten in your registration. Lots of extra specialness has been planned including distinguished speakers, panel discussions, project power point presentations, networking and lots of good music. Everyone has worked hard and this will be a conference not to be missed. As this particular year winds down, I want to thank the Nominating Committee for presenting such a hard-working slate of members to serve as officers for next year. We can all look forward to moving ahead as many good ideas just keep on coming. I think TASO is in very capable hands, too. Don’t you? Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President. Abilene Philharmonic Guild The Abilene Philharmonic Guild held their High Society Gold Medallion Ball and Brunch on Feb. 4 at the Abilene Convention Center, 1100 N. 6th St. The annual gala celebrated the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra and spotlighted the talented and committed

youth who participate in the Belles and Beaus Program. Mary and Zane Travis, longtime civic leaders and Philharmonic supporters, were this year’s Grande Dame and Noble Gold. The event included legendary cuisine by Copper Creek, dancing to the music of Trey and the Tritones, a silent auction and more. Ball Sponsors/Patrons celebrated at the 6:30 p.m. Rat Pack Paton Party, pre-ball reception. The Sensational Tea at 11 a.m. highlighted the recognition of Dottie Korman as the recipient of the Golden Charm volunteer service award presented

by the Guild, and the presentation of six Senior Bells and Beaus who, in addition to other duties, have served as hosts for the season of concerts. Proceeds from the gala benefit the orchestra, which annually presents a full season of concerts as well as performances to more than 6,000 Big Country youth through student concerts.

Women’s Symphony League of Austin Submitted by Susan Douglas

6th ANNUAL RED HAUTE VALENTINE PARTY AND CHILDREN’S STYLE SHOW The Women’s Symphony League of Austin held our 6th annual Red Haute Valentine Party and Children’s Style Show Fundraiser on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the ONMI Barton Creek Resort. This premier children’s fashion show presented the season’s hottest trends for toddlers through teens. Local stores featured were Citizen Small’s, Dragonsnaps & Kidoshoe, Monogram Lady, Pajama Princess, and Ruby Pearl. In addition to the Style Show and Luncheon, the party included Valentine themed activities for children, a wide array of vendors creating an adorable marketplace for attendees to shop, and the wildly popular “Pick-A-Prize” and “Hugs & Kisses” game. This charming event has become a Valentine tradition for many families. Over 60 children from four to fourteen years old “Rocked the Runway” with the latest fashions! Generous donors sponsored the various activities including the Chocolate Fountain, The Marketplace, “Pick-A-Prize”, “Hugs & Kisses” game, Cupcake Decorating Station, Instrument Petting Zoo, and the Valentine Creation Station. There were shopping and party activities before and after the Style Show. Over 15 vendors created an exciting and fun-filled shopping experience.

Prospective New Member Happy Hour Prospective New Members were invited to a Happy Hour at the Santa Rita Tex-Mex Cantina on February 8th.

Austin Symphony Youth Leadership Council The January meeting speaker was Singer/Songwriter Sara Hickman. Gently used jackets, coats, and new socks were collected at this meeting and donated to Mobile Loaves and Fishes.

The February meeting featured Mitch Morse, NFL offensive line player for the Kansas City Chiefs, who shared the importance of being a leader and persistence in following your dreams.

Friends Association of the Symphony Orchestra of the Brazos Valley

By Alice Hoelscher Get all your spring and summer shopping in one place! Just in time for Easter, Graduations, Mother's Day gifts, and summer weddings, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and FASO presents its highly anticipated 5th Annual Premiere Market, the only upscale juried market in the seven county Brazos Valley area. The 2017 Premiere Market will be held on Friday, March

31st and Saturday, April 1st with a "Sneak Peek" preview party the evening of Thursday the 30th. All the events are located at the popular Brazos County Expo complex in Bryan/College Station. The Market hours are on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday the hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Another special event that is included as part of the market is VIP Shopping with Muffins, Mimosas and More. All proceeds go to benefit the cultural and educational programs of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra.

The season finale of the BVSO Symphony Orchestra will be April 30, 2017 at 5 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium. Join Maestro Bussiki and the BVSO for a WICKED-good evening with stars from the Broadway production of the Tony Award- winning Musical WICKED: Alli Mauzey (Glinda) and Dee Roscioli (Elphaba). Hear these WICKED DIVAS sing the break out hits from the wildly popular musical. Other showstoppers these stunning vocalists will pull from the Broadway caldron to include music from Chicago, My Far Lady, Funny Girl, Phantom of the Opera, Titanic, and more. The Symphony Belles have participated in two etiquette luncheons with instructions from two former Belle sponsors. These luncheons are popular with the girls as well as FASO members who are invited to attend. On Friday, May 5th, 2017, the 28 senior Symphony Belles will be honored at the Symphony Belle Senior Presentation held at the Miramont Country Club. The evening will begin with a delicious dinner followed by the presentation of the senior Belles. The girls will be presented in long, white formal gowns escorted by their fathers. The girls will be individually introduced by walking under a saber arch provided by the Ross Volunteers of Texas A&M University. A father/daughter waltz will follow the presentation. The banquet will conclude with awards and recognition of the girls who have donated many hours of

service to the Symphony and the community. Scholarships are given to deserving seniors. Families and friends are invited to share in this event as celebrate and honor these young ladies. The Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra's season concludes each year in celebratory fashion with its signature gala fundraiser: Derby Day. This event is held each year on the first Saturday in May to coincide with the actual running of the Kentucky Derby. In 2017, the award winning gala will take place on Saturday, May 6th at the College Station Hilton Bluebonnet Ballroom beginning at 4 pm. This 14th annual fundraiser includes the Kentucky Derby live telecast on giant screens, the "Derby Draw"- you win if the horse you draw wins, traditional mint juleps and a gourmet seated dinner. There is the exciting hat contest and parade and the much anticipated live and silent auctions chaired by FASO members. BVSO String Quartet provide music during the event along with the Allstars of Emerald City Management. The evening is greatly enjoyed by all listening to the live music and dancing to your heart's desire. Each year the Derby Day fundraiser successfully provides funding to jump-start the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra's following season. Support of this event means continued concerts of high quality here in the Brazos Valley.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Submitted by Deborah Brown

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Introduces 35 Debutantes at the 31st Annual Presentation Ball Gowns and curtseys were all the rage as 35 Symphony Debutantes took their bows at the 31st Annual Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Presentation Ball on February 18 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The spotlight was on the debs, their families and dapper members of the Honor Guard.

The Presentation Ball, which was first held in 1987, is the largest fundraiser for the DSOL. More than $10 million has been raised for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra through the annual event.

DSO Principal Trumpet Ryan Anthony featured at Intimate Party of Note

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League held an intimate Party of Note with Principal Trumpet Ryan Anthony on January 18 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. It was a special evening to hear him play several pieces as well as to hear about his recent diagnosis and treatment for Multiple Myeloma, a terminal cancer of the bone marrow. During his treatment, trumpet players all over the world called and asked what they could do to help. In 2015 Anthony hosted Cancer Blows and over 20 trumpet legends including Doc Severinsen played in a once-in-a-lifetime musical event bringing together legendary trumpet players in a special Concert and After-Party. The 2015 events sold out and raised over $1 million in cash and in-kind donations. The events were such a success, the Cancer Blows concert will return to Dallas in May 2017. Anthony responded well to his treatment and is in complete remission. He founded the Ryan Anthony Foundation to manage and support Cancer Blows events.

President’s Message: By Darlene Clark Here is a photo of some of the volunteers at the Junior Patrons event on January 28, at Jones Hall. We used a “green screen” that made it look like we were actually in NRG Stadium. Not shown are fellow volunteers Jo Dee Wright and Lucy Lewis. What a fun event! We had a “Super Bowl” theme for the young attendees, with our upper strings embedded musicians (the Screechers) vs the lower strings embedded musicians (the Boomers), complete with sports announcer Liam Bonner and referees Vickie Hamley and Allison Conlan throwing flags for unsportsmanlike conduct and the like. The kids also were treated to performances by the embedded musicians and Symphony percussionist Mark Griffith. A huge thank you to Cynthia Onstott and our amazing volunteers! Be sure to say yes when asked to volunteer next year! We were very busy in February! I hope everyone had the opportunity to see Yo Yo Ma in concert with the Symphony on February 4. What a special treat! Crafts chairs Kristin Turnak and Ann Tornyos hosted another of their fun crafts parties at Ann’s home in Bellaire the evening of February 8, which was well attended, and we got a lot done. Thanks to our wonderful hostesses for dinner and wine, and to everyone who came to work on crafts! A huge thank you to Angela Doucette for chairing the Student Concert Usher events on February 15, 16 and 21! We hosted thousands of Houston area schoolchildren and enabled them to hear our Houston Symphony perform under the baton of Robert Franz. Thanks also to everyone who helped in this endeavor! We had our third Family Concert of the season on February 18, with Symphony pianist Scott Holshouser and our recent Concerto winner Steven Dong performing Saint-Saens “The Carnival of the Animals” in front of the Symphony. A big thank you to Donna Mello, who chaired the Instrument Petting Zoo, and to everyone who worked at IPZ and crafts!

The Orchestra/Staff Luncheon was held on February 22, chaired by Roz Cooley, Kathryn Riddles, and Beverly Hicks. Thanks so much ladies, and to everyone who brought food and/or donations. This is always a fun event, and much appreciated by our Orchestra and Staff! Our next Mailings Committee will take place on February 27 at 9:30 at Northern Trust Bering. Thanks in advance to chairs Jan Kosmal and Karinne McCullough. Our next B# Brunch will be held on February 28, at the Houston Country Club, and will feature Carlos Botero, Musical Ambassador/Assistant Conductor for the Symphony. A huge thanks to chairs Carol Vartian and Elba Villarreal! Thanks also to Vicki West for chairing the Ima Hogg Underwriting Committee, Barbara McCelvey for chairing the Ima Hogg Competition Committee, Betty Tutor for chairing the Nominating Committee, and Beth Wolff for chairing the Ima Hogg Chair Elect Nominating Committee in February. Our Spring Membership meeting will be held Tuesday, March 21, in the beautiful home of Bobbie Nau. We will vote on the 2017/18 Slate of Officers, present the Ardyce Tostengard Crystal Cello award, and have musical entertainment. See you there! Chaired by Maureen Higdon. Be sure and come to the Wine Dinner and Collector’s Auction on March 10 on the Jones Hall stage! Chairs are David and Tara Wuthrich. It’s not too late to donate wine, spirits, or wine related trips for the Auction! See me, Elise Glattier-Hollingsworth, or Helen Shaffer if you wish to do so. Also, be sure to attend the Symphony Ball on May 12 at the Marriott Marquis! Chairs are Mark and Christina Hanson. Ball Auction chairs are Beth Wolff and Farida Abjani. This year’s President’s Luncheon will be May 18 at the River Oaks Country Club. Please save the date! Chaired by Vicki West.

BAY AREA HOUSTON SYMPHONY LEAGUE HOME TOUR: 16th ANNUAL HOME TOUR HSL Bay Area The Houston Symphony League Bay Area’s Annual Home Tour “A Day by the Bay” will be March 31 (pre-tour party) through April 1st and 2nd (tour noon-5PM both days). Tickets are $20 for all five homes and can be bought online (www.HSLBA.org), at outlets, or at the door. The pre-tour party ($75 which includes the tour) is in a waterfront home in Nassau Bay that has been raised due to Ike damage. Touring properties include a home in Kemah which has 10,000 sq. ft. and has been in Southern Living magazine two years; Seabrook - a redesigned waterfront with a Tuscan feel; Bay Oaks (Clear Lake) - a lovely traditional renovated Georgian. Two homes are in Historic League City: a small home built in 1905 with wood from the 1900 hurricane and the Butler Longhorn Museum honoring the rancher who bred the longhorns prevalent in Texas, as well as influencing the growth of the Bay Area before NASA.

IMA HOGG COMPETITION The Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition will be on Thursday, June 1 for the semi-finals and Saturday, June 3 for the finals. The competitors have submitted their tapes and we have 78 fabulous young musicians who are hoping to reach the Stude Hall stage at Rice University to play with the Houston Symphony. Now musicians from

our orchestra are listening to each tape and judging who should pass on to the second round of judging. It is an exciting time! Soon we will be sending out volunteer opportunities so that you can be a part of this wonderful competition. We need lots of volunteers so please mark these days on your calendar now. If you are not going to be in town that week, don't worry. We have plenty of fun things that need to be done before the competition begins.

As part of our fund-raising for the Houston Symphony, the league has taken on the challenge to raise $400,000 for the Ima Hogg Competition. I want to thank Vicki West for chairing the Underwriting Committee and I know that all of you will support her by making a contribution. For donations of $1000 or more you can become a member of the Ima 104 group which will have many special perks including a pre-concert reception the night of the finals and an invitation to a soiree with the finalist. Please consider joining this special group of supporters.

We are so excited to be able to offer our assistance again with Hall Set-Up, numerous In-Hall positions needed during the Semi-finals on June 1, and providing Hospitality to our judges, competitors, patrons, and volunteers with a light breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks on that special day.

ALL ABOARD FOR ROUND TOP, TEXAS Join us for the inaugural Houston Symphony League Road Trip to Round Top, Texas, on Saturday, March 4, 2017. SAULA OF OZ – Children's Fashion Show Chair by Fran Fawcett Peterson

The elegant and enthusiastic Saula Valente is in full production mode. She is chairing the Houston Symphony League’s Children’s Fashion Show March 5, raising money to support music education programs that serve Houston area children. Saula’s part-time career in her native Italy was modeling until it was noticed she speaks 6 languages. She was thrust into interviewing, emceeing and often liaison for the Italian fashion industry with visiting dignitaries. All that fame and fun did not deter her studies; she earned a PhD from the University of Padua. And, it did not deter her from falling in love and moving to Houston. Her love of music brought her into the Houston Symphony League. Saula is an accomplished clarinetist and singer. She is instilling in her three children a love of, and facility for, music. Her children are enthusiastic in fashion modeling as well. All of which makes chairing the River Oaks Country Club event perfect for Saula. Her theme is The Wizard of Oz. Saula says it’s fun with a great message, “There may be a storm, but it’s always followed by sunshine over the rainbow.” She promises the catwalk will be a yellow brick road and that wizardly entertainment will enhance the delicious 11:00 AM luncheon in the company of family and friends. The Children’s Fashion Show raises money for the Symphony’s education and outreach programs which cater to 97,000 Houston area children every year. HSL Book Club Our final Book Club meeting of the season was held on Wednesday January 18, 2017 at 10:30 am at the home of Ann Thurmond, One Broad Oaks Lane, 77056. 713 621 0192. This meeting's book was "Hallelujah Junction - Composing an American Life" by John Adams (his autobiography) Ginny Garrett, our consummate facilitator, guided us through a compelling discussion of Cage's memoir – a book unlike anything ever written by a composer. Critics remark that Hallelujah Junction is an absorbing journey across the twentieth century musical landscape of America and through the life and times of John Adams, one of today's most admired and performed composers!

Plano Symphony Orchestra Guild Submitted by Irma Landis The Plano Symphony Orchestra celebrated their annual signature fundraiser on March 11, 2017. Co-Chairing the event this year were Sharon and Jerry Defalco. When Sharon and Jerry agreed to chair this year’s Gala, everyone applauded and cheered because Sharon and Jerry are among our best supporters and excellent leaders as well. Sharon and Jerry have been a part of the PSO since they returned to the Dallas area twelve years ago. They have been subscribers and leaders in many areas. Sharon served on the PSO Board for six years and served as Board President for two years. In 2009 Sharon chaired the first PSO Valentine's Gala. Up to that time, the Gala had been part of the concert experience. Sharon separated the event and instituted the Live and Silent Auction aspect to the Gala. She also incorporated an entertainment component to the event. This forum has served us well. Our patrons enjoy everything that goes on with this fundraiser. For the 2009 Gala, Sharon and the Gala Committee chose the theme "A Star Studded Evening". The design for this theme included a heart in the middle of a larger star. This logo appeared on all correspondence having to do with this event. All Save the Date cards, Invitations, Program Book as well as the decorations in the ballroom carried out theme. In 2010, once again, Sharon agreed to chair the Gala. The theme that year was Paris Nights, Passport to the Stars. The theme was reflected on all correspondence and decorations. The Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe were incorporated throughout the venue. Park benches were used to create the feeling of a Parisian park. The ambiance in the ballroom was breathtaking. This year the theme was All that Jazz. It was reflective of a fun time in our history with glitter, feathers and boas. It was as expected, stunning in the ballroom again. Sharon and Jerry were involved in every aspect of the planning from the food that was served to the last detail of the evening. All the Gala Committee Chairs had binders filled with notes and game plans to make this event successful. They all reported to the Co-Chairs and Sharon and Jerry in turn gave them support and guidance. It was hard work but well worth it because the Gala is important for many reasons. Our patrons enjoyed themselves and they also bid on the wonderful Live and Silent Auction items, which was presented at the Gala. The proceeds from our event help fund our Encore Youth Programs that provide music education and concerts for school children in our area. We appreciate Sharon and Jerry and all the volunteers who made this event fun and worthwhile for everyone.

Women’s Symphony League of Tyler Submitted by Cindy Kidwell & Beth Whitney

WSL Supports School Concerts Music education in the East Texas area has been a focus of the Women’s Symphony League in January and February of this year. More than 3,000 students from the Tyler Independent School District attended one of three (3) concerts presented by the East Texas Symphony Orchestra on January 31. WSL provided financial and volunteer support for the concert, featuring the Carnegie Hall Link Up program “The Orchestra Sings”. The Link Up event is in its fifth year and offers students an opportunity to study, from the beginning of the school year, both music theory and how to play the recorder. This enables students to “play” with the orchestra from their seats during the concert. Elizabeth Sharkey, WSL School Concert Committee Chair, led a group of WSL volunteers that worked with local school staff to bring about a rousing success!

Family Concert Features “Beethoven’s Wig” The Women’s Symphony League sponsored a lively children’s program—“Beethoven’s Wig” by Richard Perimutter—on Friday, February 3, at Liberty Hall in downtown Tyler. Each year, WSL participates in a concert for families, and this year was a huge success, thanks to WSL Chair Nancy Wrenn, members of her Family Concert Committee and members of the Junior Symphony League. Over 160 people attended the concert, and as evidenced from the smiles and laughter, everyone had a wonderful time!

WSL Toasts Upcoming Events More than 100 members gathered at the home of Leann Strnadel for the January WSL meeting, “Toast to 2017 Activities”. Details of the remaining events for 2016-2017 were unveiled accompanied by sparkling beverages and sweets. Ball Chairmen revealed plans for the annual gala to be held Friday, March 3, featuring the

presentation of more than 50 senior members of the Junior Symphony League in a setting of “Waltzing through Wonderland”. A new format was announced for the Benefit

Fashion Show “Spring into Style” which will feature upscale shopping and a fashion show for men, women, JSL members and children under giant party tents on the grounds of La Piazza Shopping Center in Tyler.

New ETSO Executive Director Introduced Vanessa Gardner, who joined the East Texas Symphony Orchestra in late January as the new Executive Director, was introduced to Women’s Symphony League volunteers as the organization held its “Toast to 2017 Activities”. Ms. Gardner moved to Tyler from Boston, bringing experience in management and work in the arts community. She has served as General Manager of the Lexington Symphony in Massachusetts, which received recognition from the League of American Orchestras during her tenure. Additionally, she has experience as Events Manager for The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program Coordinator for the Northeast Center for the Arts, as well as the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar. Most recently, she worked as Assistant Director of the Office of External Events & Conference Housing at Northeastern University. Ms. Gardner also works as a freelance musician playing French horn.

TASO Salutes Tyler Volunteers The Women’s Symphony League of Tyler is especially proud that two of our members will be recognized by TASO at its annual convention to be held in Dallas this spring. Betty Bower, a member of WSL for 33 years and member of the ETSO Board of Director for 28 years, has been named TASO Awards of Excellence “Volunteer of the Year”. At 82 years young, Mrs. Bower is a gifted and tireless Symphony volunteer who has made significant and enduring contributions to the support and growth of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. Not only has she contributed countless volunteer hours, her fundraising efforts for the symphony has yielded more than $1.5 million over the past eight years. Joi Smith, former President of the Women’s Symphony League and longtime member of the TASO Board, will be installed TASO President at the conclusion of the state conference. She brings with her 16 years of volunteer experiences with WSL, ETSO and TASO. Joi founded the annual Jazz Spectacular, an educational experience and community concert sponsored by the East Texas Symphony Orchestra and supported financially and with volunteers by WSL. For TASO, she has co-chaired the annual conference and has chaired the Juanita Miller Concerto Competition. We congratulate these two outstanding volunteers and their recognition by the Texas Association for Symphony Orchestras!

Wichita Falls Conductor Finalists Considered by Wichita Falls A search for a new Music Director/Conductor for the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra began when Candler Schaffer announced he would retire at the end of the 2015-2016 season after 20 years. The WFSO Board narrowed the initial field of over 140 applicants to 3 finalists who each conducted one concert during the 2016-2017 season. Each finalist spent the week of his respective Concert in Wichita Falls appearing on radio and television interviews, meeting supporters and officials at a reception, visiting local places (including the Midwestern State University music department), being further interviewed by a committee of the WFSO Board and appearing at the week’s Symphony League Coffee. At the coffee, each candidate talked about himself, his impressions of the community and the upcoming program then answered questions from the attendees. Candidates included Darryl One who lives in California but directs the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in Texas; Daniel Black, who is the Associate Conductor of Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; and Fouad Fakhouri, Conductor of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra (Michigan). Following each Concert conducted by a finalist, attendees were encouraged to complete a survey giving their impressions. Musicians also gave their opinions in separate surveys. The choice of a conductor will be made soon. The two Concerts not conducted by a finalist were led by a guest conductor, Jerry Steichen, Music Director of the Macon Symphony Orchestra.
