Community Members,

March “already?” I don’t understand how

it’s possible that my time in this community just

flies by as it does!!!

So March… huh? Well, we know that it’s

the month we celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, green

cloths, green food and “Green Beer!” Be on

the lookout in “The Zone” for our special menu

food and drinks.

We also have several events going on; such

as – St. Paddy’s Day 10K run @ Hanson Field House, March Madness

@ CRC Lanes, the CRC BOSS Everland Tip, the 2nd quarter Volunteer

Recognition Ceremony, Area I BOSS COEX Mall/Aquarium Trip, and

much, much more!!!!

For those of you that didn’t get an opportunity to visit the new

FMWR Camp Stanley Super Complex yet (formerly Reggie’s Club) – the

Stanley CAC/Library/BOSS and Reggie’s Pub are all co-located there

under one roof. This really is an awesome place to visit, take time off,

shoot a couple games of pool, engage in video games, just watch TV or

maybe go check out a book or DVD. We also have many computers with

internet service or, if you have your own tablet or computer, you can

connect to Wi-Fi!

Once you’re done with “playing, reading or surfing the net,” go

check out Reggie’s Pub for their daily lunch menu, and on Thursday-

Saturday evenings, you can enjoy a nice refreshing beverage with your

favorite food while either listening to great music or watching your

favorite game on the wide screen TVs!!

Oh, and by the way, not to be outdone; the Camp Stanley Fitness

Center expanded their services with a “New Functional Fitness Area!” It

is new, fresh, modern and simply AWESOME!!

Lastly but certainly not least – FMWR wants to wish our newest

members of the community; the 1-12 Cav Unit, a BIG and VERY WARM

welcome to the USAG Red Cloud and Area I family!!!

Peruse your “In The Zone” magazine and we’ll see you all out and

about!!

Namsan (South Hill) Park once marked the southern edge of what was then Royal Seoul.

Remains of the city walls can still be seen here. Today Namsan Park is located in the

center of downtown Seoul, surrounded by major districts of Namdaemun, Myongdong

and Itaewon. You’ll find the famous Seoul Tower here with its rotating restaurant and

observation deck for a commanding view of the entire Seoul area. Itaewon is well-

known for its shopping district. Here you’ll find a huge assortment of shops and vendors

selling everything from clothing to handbags to antiques and everything in between.

Many vendors accept dollars and major credit cards, but you should also bring won just

in case, since exchange rates vary from vendor to vendor.

Soldiers assigned to Camp Stanley and other authorized patrons

are enjoying the newly-opened Stanley Recreation Center complex

in what was formerly Camp Stanley’s Reggie’s Club. The USAG Red

Cloud/Area l Family &and Morale, Welfare & Recreation (Family and

MWR) Department completely renovated the former club facility

into a multiplex environment that now includes Tommy’s Library,

Reggie’s Bar & Pub, BOSS offices and the Stanley Community

Activity Center (CAC).

The former club facility was transformed into a full-scale

recreation complex in less than 4 weeks, just in time to

welcome the arrival of 1-12 CAV to their new duty

station at Camp Stanley.

The idea to convert Reggie’s Club into a recreation

complex came about when Jammie Hawkins, Family

and MWR Director, recognized that Reggie’s Club was

underutilized and other Family and MWR facilities at

Camp Stanley were scattered through the installation.

Bringing it all together in one place made perfect

sense.

“I got together with my team for a brainstorming session and

‘Bang!’ the idea was born to put everything together in the same

place. In essence, we decided to create a ‘Super Complex.’ It turned

out to be a great idea,” Hawkins says.

“With cross fertilization of our customer base moving from one

activity to another, we knew it would be the perfect venue to

serve Soldiers, maximize the use of the building and get maximum

visibility of the Pub,” Hawkins says.

After a bustling, hectic 4-week turnaround period, Reggie’s Club

was completely transformed inside and out, just in time for the

Grand Opening Ceremony and Super Bowl Party last month.

Making the transformation possible in such a short time was the

direct result of teamwork by not only Family and MWR employees,

but by the USAG Red Cloud/Area l command group, DPW and

others who worked feverously to make it happen on time.

Gordon Imrie, Family and MWR Librarian, says

teamwork was definitely the key.

“We executed the plan on January 6th and

completed the transformation on February 3rd. It was

a tremendously stressful and hectic time for everyone

involved; transporting equipment, installing/repairing electrical

fixtures, decorating activity areas and, finally, organizing and

cleaning up all areas on time for the facility opening,’ Imrie says.

“A lot of the credit for that hard work goes to our Korean staff.

Many of them worked behind the scenes, completing tasks with

exceptional dedication and enthusiasm,” Imrie says.

He was particularly pleased with the way the Library area, formerly

Tommy’s Bar, was converted into a Barnes & Noble-type facility

complete with a good selection of books and DVDs, 15 computers for

patrons to use, a comfortable lounge area and a café soon to open

that will serve coffee and pastries for patrons to enjoy.

“From a library perspective, there is now far more

room for visitors to move around, use a computer or

just lounge around, relax and read a book, newspaper

or magazine,” he says.

“A library, a recreation center and a restaurant, all

in one facility….who would have thought?” says Sally

Hall, Director, Stanley Community Activity Center.

“The renovation is a great example of collaboration between

our recreation and business operations division, maximizing the

use of one facility and providing Soldiers and their families an

easy access to a ‘1-stop shop’ in Camp Stanley” she says.

Soldiers and their families now have a variety of activities to

choose from at the Stanley Recreation Center. They can conduct

research at the library, stop by Reggie’s Bar & Pub for a drink or

a meal, try out new video games or play pool with their buddies

at the CAC, consult with Stanley BOSS on upcoming Soldier

activities; and finally, sign-up for an Family and MWR local/

overseas trip before heading back to work or the barracks.

Although the renovation has already been completed, there’s

still room for improvement.

“We’ll soon have gaming machines added as part of the

Reggie's programming and, in the very near future, we’ll add a

Café to the Library where patrons can purchase assorted pastries,

coffee and other soft drinks to enjoy in the comfort of Tommy’s

Library,” added Hawkins.

“I’m very pleased with the huge effort everyone involved

made to make the transformation from a Club facility into a

first-rate Recreation Center for the Camp Stanley community.

“If you haven't been out to Stanley lately, I would recommend

you check out the ‘Showcase’ of Camp Stanley,” Hawkins

concluded.

The annual Army emergency relief (Aer) Campaign is about to begin, starting from March 1, 2014

through May 15, 2014. AER has a history of supporting soldiers and their families, a commitment AER

carries into the future.

Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a private, nonprofit organization that was created to help Soldiers and

their Family members who experience financial emergencies. The organization provides funds to help

Soldiers with immediate financial needs such as rent, utilities, emergency travel, etc; and emergency funds

to Soldiers' orphans and widows, while offering undergraduate scholarships to spouses and children of both

active and retired Soldiers. AER was established in 1942, and has assisted more than 3.5 million Soldiers

and Family members with more than $1.5B in support since then. In 2012, AER processed over 55,000 cases,

providing $68.3 million in interest-free loans and grants, awarding more than $8.5 million in scholarships to

2,787 children and 1,230 spouses of Soldiers. (http://myarmybenefits.us.army.mil)

The AER fund raising campaign is conducted annually by the U.S. Army from March 1 through 15 May. All

contributions are fully tax deductible and may be given to any AER section or mailed to:

Donors may make their contributions to the general assistance fund or target their contributions to

specific programs such as education scholarships or widow assistance. Donors needing information about

administrative matters pertaining to bequests should contact AER at 1-866-878-6378 or campaign@aerhq.

“The annual campaign allows commanders the opportunity to reinforce a greater awareness of how Army

Emergency Relief helps Soldiers and their families,” said AER director, retired Army LTG Robert Foley, “By

promoting a better understanding of AER benefits as well as an appreciation for the flexibility which AER

officers possess in responding to requests for financial assistance, Soldiers and Families can be provided

the help they need.” AER was established during WWII to insure there was an agency within the structure

of the Army that could provide prompt financial assistance for Soldiers and their Families. AER continues

to provide no-interest loans and grants as well as scholarships to children and spouses of active duty and

retired Soldiers.

Soldiers requiring AER assistance should contact their unit Chain of Command or go to their local

installation AER office. Due to reciprocal agreements with other military aid societies, Soldiers and Families

not near an Army installation can receive AER assistance at an Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard

base from the Air Force Aid Society, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance,

respectively or from the American Red Cross call center at 877-272-7337. Additional program information is

SSG Tyrone Harvey has been an active volunteer coach at the Child, Youth &

School Services (CYSS) Sports & Fitness since August 2013. Since then, he has

become an inspirational representative of our youth activities program, and

a role model for other coaches due to his dedication and commitment to

volunteerism.

The volunteer hours SSG Harvey contributed during his time at

CYSS Sports has made a tremendous difference in the successful

accomplishment of several community sports and fitness programs.

His commitment and active role in supporting our

sports season helped enhance and strengthen the

foundation of a very successful activity program.

SSG Harvey’s professional interaction with

players and parents; his ability to teach game

skills, and the positive psychological effects

of his actions towards players, has created an

impression that our youths will remember for

the rest of their lives.

His time with us serves as an inspiration, and

a great reminder of the volunteer service our finest

If you have a computer and really don’t know

where all your money goes, your life can be easier

if you invest in personal-finance budget software.

Nearly all of the finance programs have reports

that you can customize and generate. Want to

know how much you’re spending for groceries?

Or how much miscellaneous cash went to coffee in

the morning? The program will tell you. Your bank

statement will include the debit-card amounts,

which you’ll need to add in, but not the cash you

spend. You’ll need to enter that as well.

Be cautious about the features of any software

you buy. There is one brand-name software that

will accumulate all of your information in one

place. The ads say it can combine your bank

accounts with your credit card sand investment

accounts — by going into those accounts and

extracting the information for you. Another

software will make your payments for you

automatically. Beware. While it’s a given that

they’ve gone all-out to provide security for their

servers, not all servers are equal. Do you really want

to have every single transaction you make available

to potential thieves?

Equally important, do you really want to give

up that much control of your money? If you come

across a deal that you shouldn’t pass up, knowing

that you still have two more weeks to pay the

utility bill, what are you going to do when the

computer automatically spends your money on that

utility bill?

Caveat: If you plan to use an Internet-connected

computer for your finances, don’t download any

personal-finance software from the Internet. You

don’t know what’s in it. Instead,pick a name brand

that comes in a box at the store. And when you

enter your information into the program, don’t put

your account number or even the real name of your

bank.

Best bet: Use an old computer for all your

financial information — and don’t hook it up to

the Internet. Test some of the free basic-software

programs to see which you like best. What you

want is a simple program that will categorize

your spending, reconcile your accounts (including

retirement or investment) and possibly allow you to

print out checks.
