IN THE ZONE

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Community Members,

2014 is here and we are already in the month of February!! For you sports enthusiast; you know what this means- "it's Super Bowl time" and we have the places for you to go and enjoy the game with your friends..... Mitchell's, Iron Triangle Club, Gateway Club, all offering a breakfast buffet during Half time, Stanley Bowl and Casey Bowl offering breakfast and bowling specials, so come out join in the fun and root for your favorite team...

We have also developed the new Stanley Recreation Center that merged the Camp Stanley Community Activity Center (CAC), Library, Award winning BOSS program and the Reggie's Pub, which by the way is open for lunch. This center brings all the best things that you love at Camp Stanley to one location. Look for the Grand Opening Ceremony on February 3rd.

As you read this issue of the "ZONE" you will come across the Award Winning BOSS Program for the Pacific Region; not only did we take 1st Place at Camp Stanley, but also 2nd Place went to Camp Casey and 3rd Place went to Camp Red Cloud... now how does that "Rock your World!" The Pacific Region includes Korea, Japan, Hawaii and Alaska... not bad for "little old Area I."

Hey... if you don't know this, our feature overseas tour in February includes an all inclusive trip to Hong Kong... you don't want to miss this trip, priced right and it will be awesome.

Sad news for Area I-Our very own USAG Red Cloud and Area I CSM Mike Hatfield is leaving this month for his new assignment back to the good old USA. CSM Hatfield has been a strong BOSS advocate and a priceless supporter of all Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs and services. We at FMWR will definitely miss his support, smile and humor.... Good Luck CSM Hatfield and family; our loss is the next commands gain.

Keep perusing the Zone and you will find what it is you're looking for. Seeyou out and about.

The Department of Defense has designated 24 February through 1 March 2014 as Military Saves Week.

Military Saves Week is an opportunity to work with Federal, state, and local resources to focus on the

financial readiness of military members and family members to enable them to reduce debt and create

future savings. Maintaining financial readiness is a key component of personal readiness. The 2014 Military

Saves Week slogan “Start Small, Think Big,” promotes the long-term benefits of saving a little each month.

Military Saves Week is the annual opportunity for installations and organizations to promote good

savings mentality and is a gateway for service members and their families to review and improve their own

savings regimen. Military Leaders and Project Officers (POCs) are the primary links in the chain. They make

your unit a model savings community. Through a simple process, they provide the opportunity for your

personnel to increase their personal financial readiness. Military Banks & Credit Unions’ participation in the

process will increase deposits and support our troops. Customizable graphics and personal consultation help

their operations and marketing staff personalize their products in this global campaign. Family Readiness

Centers like Army Community Service provide assistance to service members, DoD employees & their family

members. They participate in the Military Saves Campaign all year and partner with like organizations and

units during Military Saves Week every February. Marital stability depends on open communication and a

healthy financial state. This, in turn, builds the financial foundation for children’s futures. Take the pledge

today! Military Youth Saves is designed to teach kids and teens methods for good savings behaviors. We

want you to be a responsible saver and want you to spread the positive savings message to your family and

friends! Finally, Non-Profit Organizations & Associations involvement helps increase the nation's savings rate

through utilization of your resources in the community. Joining the Military Saves Week campaign builds

partnerships which contribute to financial, executive, marketing, and technical support. Please contact Area

I Army Community Service for scheduled Military Saves Week events.

MS. SUK HARPER

Volunteer of the MonthUsag Red Cloud, Casey and area I

Ms. Suk Harper, a volunteer at Camp Casey since June 2009, has regularly volunteered over 30 hours per

week at the Camp Casey Community Activity Center (CAC). She has not only volunteered for the CAC, but

also with Army Community Service (ACS) and the American Red Cross. Although Ms. Harper is not directly

affiliated with the US Army, she has been instrumental in establishing and assisting with many community

projects that positively affect the well being of our Camp Casey Soldiers, civilians and family members.

Ms. Harper’s dedication and hard work continues to be instrumental in linking the Casey/Hovey military

community with the City of Dongducheon by coordinating tours and other local community events

that are offered year round. She has also assisted the Casey CAC and BOSS program with locating and

arranging tours throughout South Korea. As a result of her efforts, the military community continues to

make seamless transactions to provide cultural and educational opportunities in Korea.

In addition to her duties at the Casey CAC, Ms. Harper recently initiated a new program where she

personally escorts post personnel to the local Immigration Office to renew their Visa and SOFA stamps,

and facilitates the “Newcomers Orientation Subway Public Transportation” outing sponsored by ACS.

Through her efforts, Ms. Harper hopes to improve communication and cooperation between the U.S.

military and the Dongducheon civilian community.

Congratulations to Mr. Harper for being selected "Volunteer of the Month" for February 2014.

Thank you

Page 26: In The Zone Magazine - February 2014

Recognized for outstanding programming and participation, Area 1 Better Opportunity

for Single Soldiers (BOSS) swept the 2013 top 3 awards for Best Boss program in the

Pacific. The Camp Stanley BOSS council won first place, Camp Casey BOSS Council took

second and Camp Red Cloud BOSS Council received the third highest score, outdoing

BOSS programs from Alaska, Japan, and Hawaii among others.

“It was definitely a team effort,” Says Stanley BOSS President SPC Tyesha Daniels.

“Despite the fact that Area l has three separate councils, we all worked together as a

team and I think that it showed,” she affirms.

Judges for the competition gave high marks to councils who not only ensured that the three pillars of

BOSS: Quality of Life, Volunteerism, and Outdoor Recreation, not only met the expectations of Soldiers, but

also developed a program that goes above and beyond. Area l BOSS Councils exceeded expectations in each

category.

“When a soldier living in the barracks sees a problem, whether it is a mold issue or any other maintenance

concern, they bring it to the attention of their BOSS council to get the problem fixed,” Says Area 1 CSM Mike

Hatfield , Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Area l BOSS Program.

Every month CSM Hatfield and BOSS council members meet with representatives on a variety of post

support agencies including Directorate of Public Works (DPW), the Exchange and Family and Morale Welfare

and Recreation (FMWR) where they discuss issues voiced by soldiers that impact their quality of life. One

recent request involved providing additional functional training in Area l fitness centers. “Whatever BOSS

Soldiers come up with we can do,” adds CSM Hatfield.

The Second BOSS pillar includes community involvement. An excellent example is the combined Area 1

BEST IN THE PACIFIC

AREA I BOSS

SPC Tyesha Daniels CSM HatfieldSally Hall

BOSS program that, during 2013, completed over 5,000 hours of volunteerism including Soup Kitchens that

feed homeless people in the community and teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to local elementary

and college students.

“They have made a big difference by going out into the Korean Community,” says CSM Hatfield. “It lets

the locals see what American Soldiers are really like. I would like to see more involvement in this area in the

future” he adds.

The last piece of the puzzle is perhaps the most familiar side of the BOSS program, Outdoor Recreation. It is

no surprise that Area 1 BOSS was recognized for actively participating in over 80 recreational events and trips

last year alone, giving BOSS Soldiers the opportunity to explore Korea.

Sally Hall, Area 1 BOSS Advisor and Coordinator, says she notices the interest in BOSS trips in new Soldiers

while they are still in-processing at the Warrior Readiness Center (WRC).

“We brief them about BOSS on Wednesday and by Friday they are at the Community Activity Center asking

about BOSS activities for upcoming months,” she proudly says.

Every new year brings new challenges and the Area 1 BOSS program is no exception, but one thing is for

certain, the three councils, all BOSS representatives, and the Area 1 Garrison Command will continue to work

together to provide single and unaccompanied Soldiers in Area 1 with the best BOSS programs in the Pacific.

How are you doing so far on your financial New

Year’s resolutions to lower your expenses? It’s the

little things that will add up to big money over

the course of a year. Grab a calculator and do the

math.

Are you still buying a trenta mocha frappuccino

on the way to work? Coffee purchased five days

a week at 52 weeks comes to $1,300 if the coffee

costs $5. Tack on another $900 if you add a

breakfast sandwich to go. (How many mortgage

or car payments is that $2,200?)

Vending-machine snacks at $2 a day comes to

more than $500.

A $7 lunch special adds some $1,800 to your

yearly expenses.

A $25 bestseller purchased every month comes

to $300; you could save if you get your books from

the library instead.

Everyday tactics to find extra money:

—To pay off credit-card debt a bit faster, forgo

one movie and dinner out, rent a flick, fix snacks

at home and put that extra money on the card

payment at the end of the month (this is especially

helpful if you’re in shock when you look at the

holiday credit-card statements that have come in).

—Don’t buy the sweater or pair of jeans that

catches your eye, even if on sale, and send the

extra money with your mortgage check as a

principal payment.

—At the grocery store, ask when the hot foods

at the deli counter are discounted to half price.

Chances are it’s 30 minutes before the deli closes.

—Try house brands of food. You might be

surprised.

—Go online and use this as your search

parameter: save money. Browse the millions of

hits and pick a few ideas that sound like things

you’d actually try.

—Drop all your change into a jar and let it

add up for a year. Run it through a coin counter

at your bank where they won’t charge you a

percentage.

—See something at a store that you just have to

have? Wait. Think about it for a whole day.

—Plan ahead. Keep track of birthdays and

give-gifting occasions and buy when you see

something priced well. You’ll save rushing around

at the last minute and paying more than you

really want to.

—If a year-long savings plan is too big to

contemplate, break it into monthly or even

weekly goals.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot

personally answer reader questions, but will

incorporate them into his column whenever

possible. Send email to [email protected].
