OCTOBER 2011 LEADING LADIES – IN THE WINGS

Jan’s Journal

President’s Message

Dear Friends,

Can you spell AMBITION? I truly believe that if you look in the dictionary,

you will see the Leading Ladies of Ruth Eckerd Hall are part of the definition. The

Oxford Dictionary notes that the word ambition is a noun…”the determination to achieve success or distinction usually in a chosen field.”

If you attended the September Luncheon on September 22, you enjoyed the program presented by Margo Walbolt, Executive Director, Clearwater Arts Alliance on

Creative Aging. As I listened to her well-presented points, I knew that she was talking

about each and every one of us.

We have all chosen to be active and involved in our hobbies, our communities,

our volunteer work, our churches, our families, our friendships, and the list goes on and on. We are creative ladies and our talents are channeled in healthy directions. Through

our efforts, we have given Ruth Eckerd Hall nearly two million dollars in the past thirty

years and we continue to step up to the plate year after year to earn more money for our favorite cause.

That said, are you ready for the busiest time of the Leading Ladies year? Each fall we work hard on back-to-back fundraisers. Our two biggest events are less than one

week apart. It is not that we have chosen to wear ourselves out each November and

December: it is just the way that our calendar works; Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, November 26 and the Holiday Gala on Friday, December 2. Please reach out to our

two hard working chairmen for these events and tell them that you are willing to help.

Information on both events and contact information is included in this newsletter.

Once again, I thank you for your dedication to the Leading Ladies. There is not a

harder working group in this community. We set the benchmark that others strive to reach.

Jan Harroun

Upcoming Events November 26 - Breakfast with Santa

Get your Santa hat out and shine those elf shoes. We need volunteers who assist with

crafts, decorate cookies, join in with the sing-a-long, help with the Santa “wishlist”,

escort children up to the stage to visit with Santa for the photo shoot and more! If you

don’t have an elf costume you may wear black long shorts with colored stockings with a

white top. We have the Christmas aprons. A Santa hat is always fun! Volunteers

please contact Grace Williams 727-785-8271

Sponsorship forms are available. You may want to underwrite a bicycle for $100 or

even sponsor a table. We try to underwrite 25 bicycles that are given away the morning

of the event (every child has an opportunity to win). Our goal is to underwrite 100

children from the Homeless Shelter and from various non-for-profit organizations. $250

sponsors a table of ten. Please consider becoming a sponsor for a child in need by

contacting Karen White 727-939-3456.

Tickets are still available - please contact Erin Heiden 727-945-9711

SAVE THE DATE

OCTOBER 2011 LEADING LADIES – IN THE WINGS

March 30 – Western Hoedown

Grab your favorite partner, and get ready for a rip-roaring good time at the Western

Hoedown. Now’s the perfect time to find that cute pair of cowboy boots you’ve been looking for! The leading ladies will mosey on down to the Wiseman’s home in

Tarpon Springs for an evening under the stars. See Betty Lang for more information.

In loving memory of Bob Challener. He and Nelson Morrow were early and great supporters of education at Ruth Eckerd Hall. They were the originators of Harvesting for

Scholarships and did so many great things for the Hall. Thank you for your many

contributions throughout the years to Ruth Eckerd Hall.

To our Homebound/ill members – We think of you often and miss seeing you at our Leading Ladies functions. Hope all is well with you.

Welcome Andrea Jarvis! Andrea is our

new member and was inducted at the

September luncheon. We are looking forward to our November luncheon, where

Andrea will be the speaker. Welcome to

the Leading Ladies of Ruth Eckerd Hall!
