In the Spotlight—

Last week was a short, yet busy one at PHS—progress reports, school pictures, class office election sign up, ring

ceremony, softball victories, RIVAL football game, spirit day, the drawing for a mini IPad, and that only hits the

surface. And yes, teaching and learning was still the focus! Board member and Pelham Banking Company Youth

Advisory Board leader Mrs. Lorenda Smith came out on Friday to get into the PHS spirit as well; we triumphed

over the Mitchell County Eagles Friday night, and Coach Carroll got his 100th win! It takes all of us to make Pel-

ham City Schools “The School System of Choice,” where we are committed to educational excellence every day in

every way. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all the latest events happening!

The spotlight of the week is on Keivon Johnson and Triston Edenfield. They are both students in Mr. Davis’ car-pentry class where they are learning lifelong skills in design and creation of woodworking products. These two

definitely have talent and skill and recently, they collaboratively built a bookcase for Mrs. Prince’s lab. They have several projects on their list for the rest of the se-

mester including

designing and creat-ing cabinet cases for the audio video program and picnic

tables to be enjoyed during lunch time at PHS.

With their moms being best friends, Alysia Threatts and Anasia Stubbs have been friends since

birth. Over the years, their bond has grown to be unbreakable. Alysia loves how she can tell Ana-

sia anything and she won’t judge her. Alysia and Anasia enjoys shopping, riding around town, and talking to each other about their

problems. They have plenty of crazy and unforgettable moments.

A memorable moment that they share would be when they went

to Wet N’ Wild, and the operator told Anasia to move up but

instead she sat down. Anasia was very confused with what to do. But overall they always have an amazing time keeping each

other company.

Fact of the Week: Just because you don’t remember your dreams doesn’t mean you don’t dream. Everyone dreams!

Most people dream about 1-2 hours a night and have an average of 4-7 dreams each night.

Neha Patel and Bryce McDowell received a certifi-

cate for their participation of spirit by being creative with their blue and gold this past

Friday.

Alyssea Threatts was the

overall Spirit Winner and received an IPad Mini donat-ed by Walmart.

Mrs. Carroll and her students are back in business with her snack store, The Hornet Corner. The plan is to incorporate

h e a l t h y snacks, but also be sure

they are tasty and will ap-peal to the s t u d e n t s .

Selling a variety of

items, the store is always a success to both students and teach-

ers. By far, though, the best attribute of the store is the friend-ly service from the students who run it. Great job, Mrs. Car-roll; we wish you continued success!

The students have been named for the 2014-2015 school year to serve on the Pelham Banking Company

Youth Advisory Board. The students are Emily Hornsby, Savannah Swilley, Jessie Adams,

Brett Bailey, Justin Poitevint, Harmony Smith, Brianna Jones, JaJuan Frazier, Cheyenne Brooks, Ebon’ne Haywood, Han-

nah Pollock, Kambreya Wynn, Savannah Tinsley, Destiny Thomas, and Madi-son Birdsong. These students have a meeting every last Wednesday of the month to discuss their plans for serving Pelham Banking Company, the

school system They serve under the direction of Mrs. Lorenda Smith and Mrs. Katrina Moore.

Softball On September 2, the Lady Hornets softball team traveled to Albany to

face the Albany High Indians. The girls played hard and got their first

win of the season with a score of 18-5. “I really think this is what we

needed. This win will give us the morale we need to work hard and

hopefully win more games,” third baseman Tailor Price commented

when asked about the win. Also when asked, Kristen Phillips stated,

“We shouldn’t let this win get to our heads. We need to stay focused

so we get more wins in the future.” They did just that when they beat

Brooks last Thursday. Good luck to our Lady Hornets in their future

games.

This week’s Hornet Spotlight shines brightly on PHS Senior, Tyreek Brown. He is 17 years of age and enjoys playing football. Aside from

football, he also enjoys baseball. When asked what he enjoys most about playing football and what he hopes to get out of it, Brown

answered, “ I enjoy football the most because we can play to-gether as a team and it also makes me become a better

middle linebacker.” Tyreek is mostly inspired by his parents because they are always there

for him when he needs them. After high school, Brown plans to attend Texas Southern Uni-

versity to study physical education, and start a family. Best of luck Tyreek!

This week Hornet’s Spotlight shines on McKenzie Smith. A very active 16 year old girl, who

participates in running cross country, track, and p lay ing baske tba l l ,

McKenzie is a member of several clubs, including Beta Club, FCA, and FCCLA. For two years

straight, this clever young lady has won the Academ-ic Award on her basket-

ball team with an outstanding 4.0 GPA. Besides the fact that McKen-zie is a very intelligent young lady, she enjoys more things in her life aside from sports and school. She enjoys eating, listening to music,

watching TV, shopping, and hanging out with friends. After high school, she plans on attending Berry College in Rome ,Ga. and major-ing in clinical psychology. McKenzie, you have a great future ahead of

you; good luck!

Two weeks ago the Hornets traveled to Camilla for their first game of the season against the

Baconton Blazers. The Hornets started the season out well with a win. There were plenty of great

plays made by the Hornets throughout the whole game. By the end of the game, the score was 42-0. With that win the team faced the

Mitchell County Eagles in the Hor-nets’ Nest, and again, PHS was

victorious with a 26-6 win over the Eagles. Come out and support

the Hornets Friday night as they

host Miller County.
