In fact, he dares us, in how we prioritize what is important to us and how we live it out concretely day to day. The main points of his life are fairly well known to those who know of him. (I hope all of you know the basic narrative of his life! Here is a link to a biography: http://www.newadvent.org/ cathen/08326c.htm. We also have some nice biographies in our parish library – located in the Youth Formation Building). He struggled with his studies, he struggled to be ordained, he struggled with parishioners and their irreligious attitudes and habits and he even struggled with the devil. In all of these struggles throughout his life, St. John Vianney held on tightly to his faith in God. It was his faith that led him to overcome each and every obstacle that he faced. As he struggled, his faith was tested and grew stronger. There were no magic moments per se. He worked at it. He struggled to keep his faith. When things got tough, he prayed harder. When things did not work out right, he prayed harder and worked harder. When people did not understand him, accept him or support him, he did not give up or give in. He prayed harder and re-doubled his efforts. In time, God’s will won out and John Vianney’s faith was rewarded by the Lord whom he loved so much and who loved him even more. Some of the incidents of St. John Vianney’s life may seem quaint or even foreign to many of us today – the saint’s hostility to the parishioners’ dancing for example, his seemingly over the top dedication to mortification and fasting, his ardent devotion to the saints and his confrontation with the devil. For us to depict the saint or dismiss him as merely being quaint or anachronistic would be wrong. There is great truth and wisdom in the very facts of his life and in what he considered important and why. His choices and actions had real consequences for himself and others. John Vianney was serious and he recognized the seriousness of life. I do not get the impression that he was a “sour puss” or “curmudgeon” or lacked a joie de vivre. Rather, I see in St. John Vianney that he saw the need for himself and others to keep our eyes always open to the bigger and more important truths and joys of life. He did not want his parishioners or himself to be distracted by the insignificant and peripheral. His mortifications and sacrifices allowed him and others to see the joys and beauties that God places around us constantly. In a word, St. John Vianney wanted people to see and love the flowers and not the weeds. I have several favorite stories of St. John Vianney, but there is one that I especially like. It has encouraged me and given me solace in my role as a pastor. Upon the death of his mentor, Abbe Balley in 1818, the relatively new priest, Jean Marie Vianney was re-assigned to the tiny backwater village of Ars. Having arrived with a cart of his few meager belongings, he found the place in disrepair. Yet, one of the first things he did was to get a new and more beautiful altar, new vestments, altar linens and new candlesticks. He wanted God to have the finest and best! He wanted God to be first! He then set out to convert the people of the parish to love God with greater passion. He chastised them about their erratic mass attendance and working on Sundays, and their dancing and casual language (cursing and gossiping). He challenged them to care for the poor and the lowly. He challenged the adults and the children to learn their faith better. And of course, he encouraged them to come to confession! From the outset, he set his agenda – God First! For John Vianney, faith, struggle and victory were in essence, all the same. When we have faith, we will have God. When we have struggles, we will still have God. And when we have God, we have Victory! Happy Feast Day! St. John Vianney, pray for us! In Pace Christi,

Dear friends in Christ:

This Monday, we celebrate our patronal feast day, the Feast of St. John Vianney. The life of John Vianney is one of faith, struggle and victory. St. John Vianney’s life is an inspiration for each of us in our daily struggles. The life of this wonderful saint is a challenge to each of us in how we live our lives. St. John Vianney challenges each of us in what we take for granted and what we do with the blessings that we have received. St. John Vianney challenges us. In fact, he dares us, in how we prioritize what is important to us and how we live it out concretely day to day.

The main points of his life are fairly well known to those who know of him. (I hope all of you know the basic narrative of his life! Here is a link to a biography: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08326c.htm. We also have some nice biographies in our parish library – located in the Youth Formation Building).

A Prayer for Migrant Children

Good and Gracious God, we thank you for the gi of children.

We are grateful for all of the joy and love that they bring into our lives, and we ask that you provide special protec-on

for those children who face hardships and danger today.

As we reflect upon the difficult journey that the Holy Family faced as refugees in Egypt, help us to remember

the suffering of migrant families. Open our hearts so that we may provide hospitality for all who come in search of refuge.

Give us the courage to welcome the stranger as Christ in our midst.

Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph, the Protector of the Holy Family,

we pray for the comfort of children who are alone and afraid because their families have been torn apart by violence and injus-ce.

We pray that they will be led to a place of safety and reunited with their loved ones. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt. 25: 35).

The poor and the vulnerable hold a special place both in

Scripture and in the Catholic moral tradition. Throughout

his mission Jesus held children in particular in high regard,

at once rebuking the disciples for not allowing the children

to come to him and declaring that we must all become like

children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven (MK 10:14). At

another point in his ministry, Jesus issued a much sharper

word of warning that it would be better that a millstone be tied around a

person’s neck, than for that person to cause a child to sin. We have a special

obligation to ensure that children are given the protection and support due to

them.

This call is of particular importance today, given the humanitarian situation

that is taking place along the U.S./Mexico border.

“Indeed, Jesus Himself was a child migrant fleeing violence. Jesus, Mary,

and Joseph were asylum-seekers and faced the same choice as the one

facing thousands of children fleeing to the U.S. each year. Jesus also told

us: ‘Whoever receives a child such as this in my name receives me’ (Mt.

18:5). Jesus surely loves the little children. We are called to do the same.”
