GrIffIN & VElASCOPaintings in Acrylic by Steve Griffin & Pastels by Diane Velasco

Steve Griffin has been a painter for over fifty years. In 1968 he was one of twelve undergraduate students, selected from a national pool, to attend the first year of the newly created Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum in New York. Since retiring from teaching in the Art Department at the University of Mary Washington in 2008, Steve has continued to work in his studio. He recently received a 2011-2012 professional fellowship in painting from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and a 2012-2013 fellowship in painting from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Steve has also been awarded three residency fellowships at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His work hangs in many private and corporate collections and is represented by several galleries including the Glave Kocen Gallery in Richmond and Long View Gallery in Washington, DC. www.stevegriffinart.com

“Over the years I have gradually drifted far from my early photo-realist style of painting. My most recent “Strata” series began in 2007. The basic horizontal stripe compositions in these paintings were initially inspired by landscapes but the end result more closely resembles a cross-section of earth or the strata found in rocks. The painting process itself is similar to an archeological dig. I apply multiple layers of paint which are eventually sanded and scraped to reveal previously forgotten colors and textures. This method of painting retains an element of chance in an otherwise very structured format.” - Steve Griffin

Diane Velasco received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute and studied in Florence, Italy. She has received awards from the Hazleton Art League statewide competition in Pennsylvania, Pastel Journal magazine’s prestigious Pastel 100 Competition and was featured in the magazine’s 2006 April issue. More recently, she placed first and third place in the Charlottesville-Albemarle Art Association’s annual juried shows. Diane has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and fine artist throughout her career and currently lives and paints in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. www.dianevelascoart.com

“The December/January show at The Morin Gallery brings together a medley of color, shape and composition that play off of the abstract as well as the representational. The tones and hues come together to create a harmonious display. I am very excited to share my landscapes and to be a part of this visual feast throughout the holidays.” - Diane Velasco

Exhibit dates: December 7, 2017-January 27, 2018Opening reception: Thursday, December 7, 5-7pm

Mary Ann Buckley fell in love with wool fiber back in the 1970s, but motherhood and careers in nursing, ethics, and law interfered until her retirement in 2014, when she added pictorial felt to her spinning, knitting, crocheting, weaving, and dyeing pursuits. Since then, her felt “paintings” have won awards at Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival and the Fall Fiber Festival at Montpelier, including that festival’s first People’s Choice Award in 2017.

Outreach NewsFor over 30 years, the Virginia Health Care Association-Virginia Center for Assisted Living has acknowledged the outstanding efforts of members who use activity programs to involve, entertain, educate, and enrich not only their residents and families, but also the greater community. The D. A. “Woody” Brown Community Involvement Awards program was named in honor of Woody Brown, the first Director of Operations of Autumn Corporation, a Vietnam veteran, and a dedicated, enthusiastic leader in long-term care. This year, Ashley C. Gore, Director of Resident Activities at Dogwood Village, submitted the “Art Adventures” program and won an award!

About Art AdventuresIn 2001, The Arts Center In Orange created the Community Outreach Program. June Dunaway, the Activities Director for the assisted living residents at Dogwood Village, was contacted to discuss exposing the seniors to local art. In 2002, Anna Marie DeMio Dowen began teaching an art class with assisted living residents called “Art Adventures.” The Outreach Program grew in 2003 and allowed the residents to enjoy a larger art curriculum than they had experienced at Dogwood Village. Several musicians came and shared their talent with the seniors. In 2009, Dogwood Village opened their brand-new Senior Living building, which allowed the assisted living residents from the Health and Rehab Building to move to their new home. The Community Outreach Program expanded within Dogwood Village at the same time. The Outreach Program, all supplies, performances, and presentations are paid for through grant funding and private donations.

In addition to Art Adventures and music programs, other forms of art and events were provided to Senior Living residents. Authors have come in to give talks and readings from their books. The seniors have enjoyed trips to the Arts Center to personally see beautiful details of the art exhibits on display. A historian of Orange has come to give guided tours around the town; presentations on different forms of art, such as bookbinding, have also been given. The Outreach Program even brought author/poet Hilary Holladay in to conduct a poetry class.

One extraordinary event accomplished this year was when Senior Living resident, Renate Ruzich, published a book about her life and struggle during World War II. She gave a reading from her book for the entire Orange community at the Arts Center. Ms. Ruzich was touched by the support and outcome of the event. She sold many of her books at that event and the books can still be purchased at the Arts Center today.

The roots of the program still exist with Art Adventures. The residents look forward to Anna Marie coming to teach the monthly classes, beginning in October and ending during National Assisted Living Week with a huge art show sponsored by the Outreach Program. The artists invite their family and friends during this week to show off their beautiful talent and artwork created all year.

The main goal of the programs at Dogwood Village Senior Living offered through the Community Outreach Program at The Arts Center In Orange is to allow residents to explore different forms of art and expression. Each program is designed to give residents freedom and exposure to artistic choices, which they sometime feel they lose when moving into a facility. Residents are encouraged to participate and to adapt to life in a way that nurtures their inner self. Even people who are not interested in art attend the presentations or music programs and are touched by different mediums. Residents are encouraged to be creative and have fun through the activities. They are given the opportunity to explore new outlets to help with different disorders such as depression.

Anna Marie says, “Everyone is an artist; the way you present yourself is a form of art within itself. Art, in its purest essence, is a matter of choices. At times, residents may feel as if they have lost their independence and right to choose: Art is a channel through which they can have the opportunity to choose and to express their thoughts in concrete form, all within a relaxing atmosphere.”
