Hello Grizzly

Families!

Our school is exceptional—We are re-minded of this every day as students greet each other, hold the doors open, ask each other how they are doing and engage in learning experiences provided

by our incredible educator teams.

Coming to school each and every day has a strong impact on your child’s aca-demic success while supporting develop-ing life long skills such as responsibility, organization, initiative, self-regulation, and social skills. We wanted to take a moment and thank you for supporting

your child’s regular attendance at school.

In February, our Grade 4-8 students will

be taking part in an extension of our

classroom, our winter activity program.

Students are given an opportunity to

select one of many activities that support

healthy active living, physical, emotional,

and spiritual well being, from painting

to skiing, swimming to outdoor rec, or

skateboarding to coding. We wanted to

take a moment to reflect on these won-

derful opportunities, including the ability

to demonstrate Grizzly qualities while

representing GPS out in the community:

and high expectations of respect and

responsibility. We are

CARDBOARD

BOAT

RACES!!!!

On Friday, February 15th

five students from the grade 8

class at GPS will be travelling to the Bracebridge Sports-

plex to compete in a regional competition known as the

Cardboard Boat Race. The competition will see the stu-

dents design and build a boat out of cardboard that will

need to hold at least two students on a voyage across

the Sportsplex pool. Over the next two weeks the entire

grade 8 class will be putting their engineering skills to

the test as they research and develop different design

ideas for the construction of the boat. The team of Tren-

ten Brittain, Haden German, Tanner Daniels, Adam

Despins, and Joel Quinn will then take the knowledge

they gain from this in-class experience and use it to

compete against other teams from within the Trillium

Lakelands District School Board. Mr. Dobie is pleased

that these students have shown the interest in this com-

petition and he is looking forward to travelling with

them to the event as their academic advisor

Good Luck Grade 8 Grizzlies!

GrIZZLIES are ReADERS!

READ…. Every day!

Our School improvement reading goal is:

Our students achieving level 3 or 4 on EQAO in 2019

will increase by 12%.

If we support students developing decoding and com-

prehension strategies, including fluency, at their instruc-

tional level then students will be able to independently

read and understand a text.

Before you can read, certain skills need to be devel-

oped. Many of these skills are rooted in our phono-

logical or sound system and our oral language.

These skills include rhyming, recognizing syllables or

sound chunks in words, beginning, end and middle

sounds as well as being able to recognize how many

words are in a short sentence.

One thing you can do at home to support your

child’s developing phonological skills is reinforce or

recognize when you hear your child rhyming:

“Cat—-rhymes with Mat….good job only the first

sound changed! That’s what rhyming sounds like”

Or help them generate rhymes

“Hmmm….I wonder what rhymes with coat? If I

change the first sound to ‘bah’ what word would I

say?”

Happy Reading!

GrIZZLIES are mathematicians!

MATH….EVERY Day!

Our School improvement math goal is:

Our students achieving level 3 or 4 on EQAO in 2019

will increase by 12%.

If we support student learning opportunities to develop

automaticity, thinking flexibly and reasonably about

numbers then their ability to represent and solve prob-

lems in measurement and NSN will improve.

Math learning experiences that focus on key mathemat-

ical ideas including the importance of what it means to

be able to think flexibly and choose the right operation

are essential. You can practice thinking flexibly by esti-

mating. Estimating is being able to make a reasonable

guess before solving the problem for accuracy. Estimat-

ing is a life skill that we use every day at the grocery

store, gas pumps, shopping or when thinking how

much time it may take to complete a task or how much

a monthly bill may be.

One thing you can do to help your child develop their

estimation skills is ask them questions prior to everyday

occurrences or events such as eating, brushing teeth or

walking to school. For example…

…..while your child is eating a meal, you can ask them

how many minutes they think it might take them to eat

and then time it and see how close their guess or esti-

mate was to the actual time.

Happy Math!
