Collegestaffusedthebuildingwhenpresidentialinterestwaned.Variousstaffmemberslivedandworkedthereuntilthebuildingwasdeemedtoofarfromcampus.BirchManorwasalsousedforashorttimebyUniversitiesWithoutWalls,analternativeedu-cationorganiza-tionactiveinthe�970s.
Thehousegatheredabitofvillageatten-tionasaplaceofrumors.ManybelievedBirch’swealthwasevi-denceofmobconnections,inparticularwithAlCaponewholivedinChicagowhileBirchdid.Thehouse’swidowwalkfueledthatrumor,anditbecamecommontohear

Hidden at the south end of Glen Helen lies a remarkable building. Though today we know it by the name of Birch Manor, its original occupant called it simply Glen Helen House. This is its story.
HughTaylorBirch,donorofGlenHelen,conceivedtheideaofahomeintheGlenwhenhedonatedthelandinhisdaughter’shonorin�929.Itwasconstructedbythesummerof�93�andBirchlivedtheresea-sonallyuntilhediedattheageof94.
Frequentlydescribedasdignified,themansionwasdesignedbyarchitectWilliamShillingintheGeorgianstylenotedforpro-portion,balance,andmathematicalratios.Thebrickusedinthehousewasfromapow-dermillatGoesStationandcertainroomscontaintuliptreepaneling,thesametreespeciesthatGlenHelennowusesinitslogo.Thehousewasbuiltwith��rooms,9baths,8fireplaces,afour-cargarage,andservant’squarters.Thoughinfusedwithaclassicel-
egance,thestructurewasconsideredaplaceofmodernconvenience.Anewgasfurnace,itsfuelpumpedoveramiletothehouse,contributedtothisreputation.
Birch’sdesignwastoolargeforasinglemantoliveinalone.WhileBirchlivedthere,thequarterswereoccupiedbyCarmeloRicciardi,Birch’sgardener,chauffeur,andbymanyaccounts,friend.Together,BirchandRicciardiclearedtrails,builtponds,andgenerallyrestoredGlenlandafteryearsoffarming.Oneofthemanyroomswasdesig-natedtheMorganroom,andreportedlywasalwaysavailableforBirch’sfriends,AntiochpresidentArthurMorganandhiswifeLucy.
AfterBirch’sdeath,asuccessionofAntiochpresidentslivedinthehouse.SamGouldwasthefirstpresidenttooccupythehouse.Later,PresidentDixonmovedhisfamilyofeightthere.Toaccommodatehissizablefamily,hehadadditionalroomsaddedtothehouse,whichhadalreadybeenconsideredtobeextravagantlylarge.Thecurrentlayoutcontains�8rooms.Hugh Taylor Birch

Director’s Report to the Community
WhatisthisissueofIn the Glenabout?It’sabouteverything,oratleasteverythingthatwedotocareforGlenHelenanditsprograms.
Firstandforemost,weserveasstewards
tothepreserve.Often,thismeanslook-ingfornewandcreativewaystofundtrailmaintenance,habitatrestoration,andpubliceducation.So,inthesepages,you’llfindinformationaboutoureffortstoestablishaGlenHelenlicenseplate,holdaspringbird-watchingevent,andevenpromotegroceryshoppingforthegoodoftheGlen.
ThisissueofIntheGlenisalsoabouteducationandrehabilitationofwildlife.Wearesoproudthat,forthefirsttimethispastyear,wewereabletoprepareabaldeagleforasecondchanceinthewild.Butthateaglewasjustoneof�70-plusbirdstocomethroughourRaptorCenterthispastyear.CenterDirectorBettyRosstakesusthroughtheyearinher“wingbeat”column.
It’saboutenvironmentaleducation,andhowGlenHelenchangespeople’slives.Everyyear,ourOutdoorEducationCenterwelcomes3,000schoolchildren,andtheirfuturewillbeshapedbytheexperiencesoftheirweekinGlenHelen.LearnaboutourcurrentactivitiesattheOutdoorEducationCenterinthecolumnbyBethKrisko.
It’salsoaboutspringtime.AlthoughitfeelsoddtowritethisinJanuary,allofourprogramsfromMarchthroughMayaredescribedherein.SpringisaspectaculartimetoexperienceGlenHelen.Thewildflowersareout,migrantsongbirdsreturn,theyellowspringcontinuestochurnoutgallonaftergallonofiron-richwater.Thetrailsbeckon.Comevisit!

A New Truck for the GlenYouwouldn’tthinkthatanaturepreservewouldbedependentonanautomobile.However,tooperateourprograms,managethepreserve,andmaintainourfacilities,areliabletruckisanecessity.Someofthemanywaysthatwerelyonatruckincludeplowingtheroadsinthewinter,usingthe
winchtomovedownedtrees,towingmow-ingequipmentaroundthepreserve,andhaulingeverythingfromrecyclingtofurni-turetofirewood.
Ouroldtruckhadserveduswell,butitwas2�yearsold,andreadytoretire.For-tunately,ateamofdonorscametogetherandprovidedthefundsneededtoreplacethetruck.Now,whensnowscome,we’llbeabletokeepourdrivesclearandsafefortheschoolgroups,families,andeveryoneelsewhousesthepreserve.

Calling All NaturalistsForfiftyyears,theGlenHelenOutdoorEducationCenterhasreliedonourinnova-tivemodelofworkingwithstudentinternstoteachthecampersfromvisitingschools.Withroughly25naturalistinternscomingthroughGlenHeleneachyear,thismeansthatasmanyas�250naturalistshavespentasemesterinGlenHelen–eachofthemshapingthelivesofcountlessschoolchildren.
Now,weareworkingtolocateeveryonewhohasservedasaGlenHelennaturalist.It’sabigproject,asnaturalistsareadiversegroup,withmembersscatteredacrosstheglobe.Butwewanttofindthem–asmanyaswecan.Wehopethatwe’llbeabletoprovideaforumforallowingGlenHelennaturaliststheopportunitytoreconnectbothwiththeGlenandeachother.

RebeccaJaramillostartedattheOutdoorEducationCenterinmid-October.RebeccacomestotheGlenfromNewMexicowhereshehashadavarietyofenvironmentaledu-cationexperiences.MostrecentlyRebeccaservedastheEducationCoordinatorforHawksAloftInc.,anavianresearchandeducationorganization.
RebeccareceivedherundergraduatedegreeinMarineSciencefromtheUniversityofSanDiego,andherMaster’sinoutdooreducationfromtheUniversityofNewMexico.Sinceherarrival,RebeccahasbeenworkingdiligentlyatrecruitingandhiringourWinter/Springstaff.

refiningoutdooreducationprograms.Theseprograms,inconjunctionwithour�,000-acreclassroom,keepschoolscomingbacktoGlenHelenyearafteryear.
Inadditiontoretainingourreturningschools,wecontinuallyseeknewschoolstoenjoytheOutdoorEducationCenterexperi-ence.ThispasttermweevaluatedourschoolcampcurriculumforalignmentwiththeOhioAcademicContentStandards,thefounda-tionofpubliceducationinthestate.Wewerepleasedwiththeresults,aswefoundthatourcurrentcurriculummeetsmanyofthescienceindicatorsforseveralgrades,andparticularlyforgradesfourthandfifth.ByshowingalignmentofourcurriculumwithAcademicContentStandards,wecanmoreeffectivelypromoteourprogramandmoreclearlydemonstratetoschoolsandteach-ersexactlywhatourprogramofferstheirstudents.

Looking Back: A 2006 Rehabilitation ReviewEachoneofthe�7�birdsadmittedlastyearhadastoryofitsown,andpeoplewhorespondedtoitsplight.Ifweweresometimesfrustratedwiththeunwillingnessofpeople
ofthearrivals,andalmosthalfwerefirst-yearbirds.Thebreakdownwas:45Easternscreech-owls,36red-tailedhawks,34Cooper’shawks,�7Americankestrels,�6greathornedowls,�0turkeyvultures,4barredowls,3baldeagles,2peregrinefalcons,2red-shoulderedhawks,�sharp-shinnedhawk,and�merlin.AssistingwiththeircarethroughthewholeyearwasaverycapableadministrativeinternfromKansas,KatieJensen.
Althoughitwasgreatwheneverwereleasedabird,thereweresomecasesthatbecameespeciallyrewarding:birdsnot
damagetoitslegfromhanging.Splintingandwrappingtheleggaveittimetorecoveritsmobility.WhenwereleaseditsixmonthslaterneartheGlen’sCoveredBridge,therewasnotavultureinsight,butasitstartedcirclingtogainheight,aformationofvul-turesappearedfromtowntocirclewithit,nodoubttowelcomeitbacktotheroost.
Thebiggesthighlightofourrehabilita-tioneffortslastyear,however,hadtobethereleaseofabaldeagleatDeerCreekLakeinlateOctober.ItwasreallyexcitingwhenthePickawayCountywildlifeofficerbroughttheeagleonaSundayafternooninmid-June,

tohelpaftertheycalledus,wewerealsoamazedatthelengthstowhichsomepeoplewenttorescueandtransportbirds.Someevengavethebirdsnames:Hudson,Cricket,Rusty,Ozzy...wedidn’taskhowthenameswerechosen!
Thegoalofwildliferehabilitationistoreleasehealthyindividualsbacktothewild,andwedidthatwithmorethanhalfthebirdsweaccepted.It’salsoanimportantwaytogiveassistancetopeoplewhofindthebirds,andawaytohelpoffsetthehumanimpactonwildlife.Mostofthebirdscameinbecauseofhuman-relatedcausesorinterfer-ence:collisionswithvehicles,windows,wires,andatrain;caughtinbarbedwireornetting;trappedinchimneys,buildings,andevenapeacockpen.
Fivespeciesaccountedforalmost90%
expectedtorecover,oronesthattookex-traordinaryeffortsonourpart,orlongperi-odsoftimetorecuperate.ThegreathornedowlreleasedatourEarthDayProgramwasalmostdeadonarrival,starvingtodeath.Itsfeetwereclenched,eyeswereclosed,anditcouldn’tstand.Itseemedhopeless,butaftergivingitwarmedfluidsthroughthenight,itwasstillaliveinthemorning.Itmorethandoubleditsweightthenexttwomonths,buildingupstrengthforasuccessfulrelease.
Twootherspringreleaseswereprettymi-raculousaswell:agreathornedowlwhosewingstookfivemonthstohealfrombarbedwiredamage,andafirst-yearturkeyvulture,cutdownfromaYellowSpringstreewhereitsfootwascaughtinnylonrope.Thecircu-lationhadbeencutofftoitsfoot,soitlosttwotoes,butthebiggestproblemwasthe
becausewe’dneverbeforeadmittedanadultbaldeagle.Thenrealitysetin.Notonlyareeaglesmoredifficulttohandlethanthespeciesweusuallyadmit,butthisonewasnotinverygoodshape;hewasthinanddirty,withfeathersinpoorcondition,andwithanopen,infectedwoundononewrist.Damagetojointsisespeciallybadintermsofreleasepotential.But,offwewentthenextdayforhisfirstappointmentwithDr.Brown,thenthestartofdailyantibioticinjections,woundcleaning,bandaging,andstretchingofthewing.Themoreheate,thestrongerhegot,

andthelesscooperativehebecame.Hewentoutsideaftertwoweeks,buthadtohaveasecondsurgeryafterthat.
Fromhisfirstdaysintheflightcage,heexercisedonhisown,flappinghiswingswhilerunningthelengthofthecage,untilhestartedliftingslightlyofftheground.Itwasmorethantwoandahalfmonthsafterhisarrivalbeforehewasabletoflyuptoaperch.Thenextday,however,heflewthe�50-footlengthofthecage,and,youmightsay,heneverlookedback.
Weputhimonaregularexercisesched-ule,pushinghimtofly�5-20lengthseighttimesperday.Hebecameaverystrongflyer,buthiswingdroopedwhenheperched,soweworriedaboutthat.Themorewewatchedhim,however,themoreconvincedwewerethathecouldmakeit,soitwaswithgreatsatisfactionthatwewatchedhimflyoffoverthemarshareaatDeerCreek,andkeeponflying.

storiesofCapone’smenpacingthewalkwithmachineguns.Despitethisrumor’spopular-ity,therehasneverbeenprooftosupportaconnectionwiththemafia.OnecanjustaseasilyattributetheunusualfeaturetoBirch’sfamiliaritywithEastCoastarchitectureorawaryarchitect’swaytopermiteasyaccesstothechimneys.Variousreportsofhauntingshavealsobeenreportedalongwitharumorofaburiedbodyinthebasement.Noneoftheserumorshaveanyrecordtosubstantiatethem,despitetheirpersistentpresence.
Oneofthemanyroomswasdesig-natedtheMorganroom,andreport-edlywasalwaysavailableforBirch’sfriends,AntiochpresidentArthurMorganandhiswifeLucy.
TodayGlenHelenstaffandvolunteersareworkingtobreathenewlifeintoBirchManor.Stillinremarkableconditionafter75yearsofstandingtallatthesouthborderofGlenHelen,themanorisideallysuitedforretreatsandspecialgatherings.Thepatioandgroundsareavailablefordayrentals,asisthegrandfrontareawhichincludes3000squarefeet–nearlyallofitpaneledwithdeep,richlycoloredtulippoplar.
Withitstimelessstructureandcalmingsurroundings,theBirchManor,builtasaretreatfromtheworld,hasserveditspurposeformanyresidents.JustasthereisprideinfulfillingBirch’swishesbymaintainingGlenHelen,thereisjoytobehadinseeinghishouseusedasthehavenitwasintendedtobe.
