2. THE “HANDS ON” WORKSHOP ISPRA FEBRUARI 10-13, 2014
QUICK SCAN
France: What we have learned: The process : Based on GIS tools : filters, models.
The tools : Quickscan : easy to use but not (yet) available... Other GIS : available not easy to use, GIS expert required
Data : Availabilty : EU (OK) ; FR (tbc) Scale : case per case expertise
Support : Contacts with experts (modelling) : we don't have to reinvent the wHeel !
Agenda : We'll be able to have some results before the end of 2014
Mapping ecosystem services : Italy
Conclusions
Exploring options with expert knowledge using QuickScan worked quick and easy
Iterative approach was very useful
Can be further used e.g. to explore replacement costs and land management strategies
Using European data is an option but needs national validation
In this case there was no feasible information for regional / local decision making

• Expectations fulfilled
• Opportunity to apply our data– good training
• Capacity building – good to bring experts!
• Fast speed! Effective but demanding
Workshop evaluation
What policy expert takes home
• Concentrate on multiple benefits – i.e. not only a single service no
matter how it seems to be relevant (e.g. flood control)
• Necessary to consider ES maps according to the quality of input data
• Wide collaboration among various institutions/sectors needed
•Better to start, than to discuss starting
•Don‘t hesitate to ask for help (international experts)
QUICK SCAN
Insights
Distinguish between stocks, flows and actual service
Models needed: translation stock -> flow -> services
Knowledge-exchange will/may help!
Countries may have complementary experience
• will the expectations on the 2014-report be more
specified ?
• how do we get consistent and validated approaches ?
• anxious to learn about the next steps from the MAES-group
CONCLUSIONS (FROM PROJECT PERSPECTIVE):
1. MANY DIFFERENT LESSONS LEARNED MATERIAL TO
IMPROVE AND EXPAND THE MESEU MANUAL
2. QUICKSCAN TOOL HELPFUL
- Model is still under development
- We can make available a beta version for free
- We can provide technical and or facilitation support, but Alterra
Management will require fee
3. MORE MEMBER STATES MAY BE HELPED, BUT WE NEED
TO DEVELOP PLAN & BUDGET
