IN THE COMMUNITY: WHY NOT READ...

Did you know that the average elementary school student loses two months of reading skills and almost three months of math skills during their summer break? Known as the “summer slide,” this decline in critical reading and math skills can add up over time, equating to about a two-year lag in reading and math proficiency by the time a child reaches middle school. With this harsh reality in mind, the Turner AECOM Hunt Joint Venture (THJV) community outreach team partnered with the Why Not? Incubator to host the Why Not Read Challenge, a fundraiser to support academic achievement at Kelso K-6 Elementary School in Inglewood, California. Since the start of the fundraiser in June of 2019, the project team has raised nearly $2,500 towards the purchase of books from Scholastic, Inc. to place in classrooms and the student library. With the support of Dr. Jacqueline L. Sanderlin (“Dr. J”), education expert and CEO of the Why Not? Incubator, THJV plans to continue hosting educational fundraisers, growing community partnerships, supporting youth education, and empowering the Inglewood community. IN THE COMMUNITY: WHY NOT READ CHALLENGE RAUL HERRERA Local 213 Carpenters Union Start Date: October 2019 “I remember driving down Prairie Avenue and thinking, ‘my goal is to work there before the project ends.’” An Inglewood native, lifelong Rams fan, and carpenter by trade, Raul Herrera has watched SoFi Stadium rise before his eyes. Having worked in construction since graduating high school, Herrera had plenty of hands-on experience but decided he wanted a career. Raul enrolled in the LAX Hire Program, which gives local residents access to a comprehensive apprenticeship program that places them on an LAX construction project upon completion. Through this opportunity, he subsequently became a member of the Local 213 Carpenters Union. With a few years of experience in structural framing and drywall installation under his belt, Raul heard about the Inglewood One Stop Construction and Utilities Pathways Program (CUPP) from a friend and decided he had nothing to lose. He immediately called in and they placed him on a local hire call list. Today, he is a proud employee of Perez Construction Group—a minority, veteran-owned-and-operated construction management firm based in Los Angeles—and works at the construction site of his dreams: SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park! Just a few weeks into the job, Herrera is doing drywall installation. Nonetheless, his dream is to one day be a carpenter foreman. Herrera is grateful for this unique opportunity and nothing made him happier than telling his 10-year-old daughter that he’s working on the Rams and Chargers stadium “down the street.” US ROCK CORPORATION US Rock Corporation is one of SoFi Stadium’s newest Minority and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (MDBE) contractors and currently supplies aggregates and organic materials, such as decorative rocks, concrete, and mulches to the construction site as needed. Since its founding in April 2015, US Rock Corporation has been a proud supplier of affordable, high-quality, and domestically sourced landscape products to customers ranging from individual homeowners to large corporations and government agencies. Headquartered in Inglewood, California, their tight-knit team of nine employees works hard to provide “around-the-clock” bulk delivery services across the Central California, Southern California, Western Nevada, and Western Arizona regions. According to company President and CEO Russell Rashed, US Rock Corporation’s choice to operate in an environmentally responsible way distinguishes it from its competitors in the industry. Strategically maxing out truckloads to reduce emissions and establishing paperless office procedures are only a few ways in which the company has demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability.
