WELCOMENISO enthusiasts,

Welcome to our Guest Concert of the 2018-19 season! We are delighted to host the Gaudete Brass, a group composed of five musicians who believe in the expressive power of brass. Gaudete (gow-DAY-tay) is a form of the Latin word for “joy.” We look forward to a joyful and exuberant concert.

On behalf of the NISO board, I would like to thank all the individuals and businesses who offered their financial support to make the 2018-19 concerts a great success. We will continue to seek your help in realizing the 2019-20 season and encourage you to support the NISO Foundation in the upcoming months.

Sit back and enjoy the Gaudete Brass – and please don’t forget truffles and coffee at intermission.

Sincerely,Rhonda PenningsNISO Board Chairperson

WELCOME________________________ Dear NISO friends, Welcome to the opening concert of our 2017-2018 season, “Symphonic Treasures." Tonight we hear music with the theme “B is for Bravo!” which features well-known music by Beethoven, Brahms, Bartók, Bernstein, and Borodin. We look forward to hearing segments by guest artist Douglas Yeo, bass trombone, and the Dordt College choirs. This is just the beginning of our outstanding season with wonderful treasures from the orchestra and guest artists. We are excited to once again have the Celebrity Conductor Contest during our Winter Pops Concert on January 27. Each contestant will be asking for your support (one dollar = one vote) as a way to raise money for NISO. The person with the most votes will be named the 2018 NISO Celebrity Conductor and will have the honor of conducting a musical piece after intermission. The Winter Pops Concert will center on “Romancing the Violin,” featuring Jessica Mathaes on violin. It will be an evening of inspiration and romance. Please enjoy coffee and truffles at intermission and consider purchasing the NISO 30th Anniversary CD. Thank you for your support of NISO. We appreciate your generosity. Best Regards, Rhonda Pennings NISO Board Chairperson

PROGRAM NOTES_________________

Joan Tower writes about her composition, Copperwave, “My father was a geologist and mining engineer and I grew up loving everything to do with minerals and rocks. Copper is a heavy but flexible mineral that is used for many different purposes and most brass instruments are made of copper. The ideas in this piece move in waves, sometimes heavy ones and at other times lighter--also in circles, turning around on the same notes. Occasionally, there is a Latin type of rhythm that appears, which is a reminder of my years growing up in South America where my father was working as a mining engineer.” David Sampson writes the following about Morning Music: “Morning Music for brass quintet was written during the summer of 1986 for the American Brass Quintet. It is a sequel to a previous work of mine titled In Memoriam: W.E.S. for woodwind quintet written in 1981 and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet. The subject of that piece was the murder of my brother, William Evan Sampson, by the Ku Klux Klan and American Nazis in 1979. Morning Music deals with my thoughts and feelings seven years later. As you will hear, the anguish over the death is as intense as ever, but strength and hope will gradually emerge from the despair. The work is one movement with clearly delineated sections ending with a fast-paced coda. I have dedicated Morning Music to my mother, Betty Sampson, whose optimism and resiliency have been an inspiration to me.” Mark Nowakowski relates that, “Wawel Fanfare (pronounced 'Vah-vel') was written during a half-year stay I had in Krakow, Poland, where I had the great fortune of holding a visiting lecturer position at the Jagiellonian University. Every day as I took the bus into and out of the heart of Krakow, I would pass the majestic Wawel Hill at a distance, lying nestled in a gray and moody turn of the Wisla River. I would visit it on foot weekly, uncovering new details of its history and basking in the transcendent feel of this place, a sacred ground for the Polish people wherein kings, poets, and heroes were buried. The Wawel Fanfare was written by request of the Cracow Brass Quintet during this residency, and is my impression of the place and the incredible and tumultuous history which it represents.” The Gaudete Brass gave the American premiere in 2018. Stacy Garrop’s Legends of Olympus depicts five Greek gods and goddesses who lived on Mount Olympus: Helios, the sun god, who daily pulled the sun across the sky in his golden chariot; Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who was born from the frothy sea-foam; Hermes, the youngest and most mischievous of the gods, who served as a messenger between Olympus and the world of man; Apollo, the god of music, who played a golden lyre; and Dionysus the god of wine and fertility. Gaudete Brass commissioned “Helios” in 2011 and subsequently commissioned the rest of the piece. ARTISTS_________________________

GAUDETE BRASS is made up of five musicians who believe strongly in the expressive and communicative power of brass chamber music. Since

2004 the quintet has engaged in creatively expanding the brass quintet repertoire, developing unique programs that have resonated with chamber music audiences all over the country. The group has engaged in live performances at venues such as Merkin Hall and Symphony Space in New York City and Millennium Park in Chicago, commissioned new works from noted composers such as David Sampson, Jonathan Newman, John Cheetham, Steven Bryant and Stacy Garrop, and appeared on radio broadcasts on WFMT in Chicago, WQXR in New York, and Nashville Public Radio. While keeping this rigorous performance schedule, Gaudete has recorded four albums: Brass Outings (2006), winner of the CDBaby Editors’ Choice distinction and nominee for “Just Plain Folks Best Classical Chamber Album”; Conversations in Time with organist R. Benjamin Dobey (2011, Pro Organa); Chicago Moves, produced by Grammy winner Judith Sherman and featuring several of its commissioned works (2012, Cedille Records) and sevenfive (2017, Cedille Records) featuring five new works commissioned for Chicago’s John Corigliano 75th birthday festival. The quintet has also presented educational programs and concerts at prominent institutions including The Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music. In the fall of 2013, Gaudete joined Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts faculty as ensemble-in-residence. Gaudete (gow-DAY-tay) is a form of the Latin word for “Joy.” We support the idea that chamber music, even (and perhaps especially) the serious kind, can powerfully communicate both the poignant and the exuberant. CHRISTOPHER STANICHAR is the Principal Conductor of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble of some of the finest

musicians in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. Stanichar was appointed to this position in 2011, following a number of guest appearances. Stanichar has continued NISO’s tradition of artistic excellence, innovative programming, and collaborations with guest artists from the region and beyond. Stanichar leads NISO in three concerts per season, in addition to the annual Concert for Children. He has been praised for “his obvious energy, great joy directing, and outright enthusiasm” (Peter Wagner, Northwest Iowa Review).

In addition to his position with Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Stanichar conducts the Worthington Area Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota. He is also serving as Visiting Professor at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. As part of his duties, he is the Director of the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony, the oldest continuous orchestra in South Dakota. Recently, Christopher has been selected as one of four finalists for the Music Director search for the Knox-Galesburg Symphony (a part-time professional orchestra in Western Illinois) following an international search that included more than 50 applicants. Dr. Stanichar appeared with the orchestra on October 20, 2018, as the opener for the KGS subscription season.

Stanichar has conducted professional orchestras in Europe, Russia, Mexico, and the United States, including the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Sochi Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Orquesta Sinfónico Juvenil del Estado de Veracruze (Mexico), and many orchestras in the United States.

Stanichar earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he was a student of Gerard Samuel. In 1996 he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study conducting in Slovakia, where he appeared as a guest conductor of many top orchestras in that country. In 1997 he was appointed Conducting Assistant for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, where maestros Jesús López-Cobos and Erich Kunzel mentored him.

Stanichar is an active composer; his works have been commissioned and performed throughout the world. His Trisagion was used in the Ric Burns’ PBS documentary, Andy Warhol. More recent projects include a full-length cantata, St. Mark Passion, written as part of a Granskou grant for the 150th anniversary of Augustana College. His Variations on a Theme by Handel for string orchestra is featured in the independent film, Dust of War. TrevCo-Varner Music has published several of his works for English horn.

THE NORTHWEST IOWA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is comprised of the finest musicians in the tri-state area. Teaching principals are of a

professional caliber and function as first chair players and teachers in sectional rehearsals. The orchestra’s 80 members include adults of all ages as well as gifted music students from area high schools, middle schools, and colleges. Several of the high school students are recipients of scholarships from Friends of the Symphony for the purpose of continuing their private music instruction. NISO presents three concerts each season in addition to the annual Concert for Children, which is given each November for over 1,000 area 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students.
