Wodehouse, ECHOES OF THE JAZZ AGE by authors from the twenties, ELLEN FOSTER by Kaye Gibbons, and THIRD & INDIANA by Steve Lopez. His adaptation, with Chaim Potok, of THE CHOSEN was originally presented by The Arden and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, and won the 1999 Barrymore Award for Best New Play. It has since been produced by more than twenty theatres all across the country to nearly unanimous acclaim and sold-out houses. More recent adaptations are BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN by David Foster Wallace, SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION by Ken Kesey, and an as-yet-unnamed Mark Twain musical melodrama. Aaron is also a freelance director with such theatres as The Folger Shakespeare Library, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and many others. Most recently, Aaron directed TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD with the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, having directed his adaptation, MY NAME IS ASHER LEV at the Rep last season. He teaches at the University of the Arts, is a philanthropic consultant, and even acts from time to time. He is also an Eisenhower Fellow. D I R E C TO R ’ S N OT E S
I N TA N D E M N E E D S YO U !
When “The Chosen” was published in 1967, America was awash in turmoil; the war in Vietnam was raging, the civil rights movement was burgeoning, Barry Goldwater’s conservatives were hammering at Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, and an entire generation was eschewing the ideals of their elders in favor of creating their own brave new world. Chaim Potok’s gentle coming of age tale exploded on the literary scene, and its message of acceptance and tolerance was a welcome balm for the cacophony of that turbulent time.
History, it seems, is repeating itself. There seems an ever widening gulf between people in every area of public discourse, and no faction is blameless in the stridence of its message. Some fear that we are moving toward a point where the fabric of our society will be rent beyond repair. So, when asked why I am doing this play at this time, I refer to the first words you will hear tonight. They are from the Talmud, and their wisdom and reason are at the core of Jewish thought. When you hear these words, take a moment to reflect on how they might apply to you, and how it may just be time to be silent, to listen; and though we may not always agree, it is always within our capacity to accept that two opposing ideas hold their own truths. Until we acknowledge other viewpoints as valid, we can’t hope to find middle ground in which to move forward. Peace.
We’ve accomplished a great deal for a small company since we began in 1998 and we are excited about the possibilities the future holds. As a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization, In Tandem Theatre relies on the generosity of our patrons and friends to keep moving forward. Ticket sales, which we try to keep as reasonable as possible, can’t cover the entire costs of producing professional quality theatre. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to our annual campaign and see your contribution go directly toward productions costs (actor and designer salaries; props, costumes, sets, lights; script royalties and marketing). We appreciate your patronage very much and hope you can help us out!
