Los días 17, 18 y 19 de noviembre se realizará el tercerFestival de Jazz Latino de la Riviera Maya 2005organizado por el Fideicomiso de Promoción Turísticade la Riviera Maya. Otro año más la Riviera Maya sehonra con artistas internacionales combinando lamúsica jazz con un entorno paradisíaco.

Este año tendremos a dos de las mejores voces de laescena jazzística nacional, Iraida Noriega y MagosHerrera, quienes en esta ocasión compartirán elescenario para mostrarnos un espectáculo enconjunto fuera de serie. Su presentación será abierta alpúblico el día jueves 17 de noviembre en el ParqueCentral. Ese mismo día se presentará Maneloque nosdeleitará con lo mejor del jazz latino local con unapropuesta nueva y diferente. Además el grupoconsentido de Playa del Carmen, Aguamala, sepresenta nuevamente con su repertorio original dejazz-rock como anfitriones de este festival.

El viernes 18 de noviembre, en el Hotel RoyalHideaway, se presentarán nuevamente MagosHerrera e Iraida Noriega. Así mismo nos deleitaráElizabeth Meza, gran cantante de amplioreconocimiento internacional con una carrerajazzística impecable. Este espectáculo presentará lacombinación de las cuatro mejores voces de nuestropaís, que además será complementado con la presenciade grandes músicos mexicanos como EnriqueNery y Cristóbal López. Como invitada especialtendremos a la más joven de la dinastía Toussaint,Cecilia, quien estará acompañada en esta únicaocasión por sus hermanos.

Y para cerrar con broche de oro, el sábado 19 denoviembre se presentarán sin costo para el público enPlaya Mamitas y Tukan, Ivan Lins una verdaderaleyenda viva de la música brasileña. Ivan Lins estaráacompañado en esta única ocasión por loshermanos Toussaint: Enrique, Eugenio y Fernandoque conforman el grupo más importante de jazzcontemporáneo mexicano llamado Sacbé. Además,ese mismo día podremos disfrutar de la presencia deMint Condition, una extraordinaria agrupaciónproveniente de Minneapolis. Conjugan elementos delrhythm and blues, hip-hop y jazz para crear uno de lossonidos más originales del momento, que les havalido las primeras posiciones de la lista Billboard.

Durante tres días suenan los nuevos acordes del jazzlatino y las palmeras se tornan instrumentos musicalesvolviendo este Festival de Latin Jazz de la Riviera Mayauna invitación a toda la gente local y a nuestrosvisitantes a descubrir estos valores añadidos a su visitaque a cualquiera cautivan.

The third Riviera Maya Latin Jazz Festival,organized by the Riviera Maya Tourism Board,takes place of November 17, 18 & 19. RivieraMaya will be honored once again with thepresence of international jazz artists combiningjazz music with a scenery in paradise.

This year Iraida Noriega and Magos Herrera,two of the most beautiful voices of the Mexicanjazz scene, will share a stage to give us anamazing joint performance. Their show is inParque Central on November 17th , and it´s freeand open to all. On that same night, Manelowill perform some of the best local latin jazzmusic with a fresh and different take. Playa delCarmen favorites, Aguamala, will join us onemore with their original jazz-rock repertoire ashosts of the festival.

On Friday, November 18th, the Royal HideawayHotel will be the venue where Magos Herreraand Iraida Noriega will perform their secondshow in the festival. On the same night,Elizabeth Meza, great jazz singer with arespected and internationally acclaimed career,will delight us in the company of her first classmusicians. This spectacle will be unique becauseit combines the presence of four of the bestvoices in Mexico that will share a stage withgreat Mexican musicians Enrique Nery &Cristóbal López. The youngest of the Touissantdynasty, Cecilia, is the special guest of the night.For this only occasion she will be joined by herfamed brothers.

eptember 16, 1810 is thedate that marks the begi-nning of the Mexican inde-

pendence, an 11-year-long warfull of heroism and strong convic-tions with a legacy that isreflected this month with strongpatriotic sentiments. Adornmentswith the three national colors,the image of the Virgen ofGuadalupe, the priest Hidalgoand the Dolores Bell are thesymbols that enliven and colorhouses, streets and plazas ofevery town and city in theMexican Republic.

This is a very important Mexi-can holiday which, unlike othercountries´ traditions, is celebra-ted on the date it began andnot on the date it ended. Thefestivities begin every year onthe night of September 15th,with a colorful and populargathering in the plazas of thegovernment buildings in eachtown. The history that su-rrounds this war is extremelyextensive, but nonethelessinteresting. We give you a widescope of the main events thatled to the Mexican Independence.

Comienza en la nochedel 15 de Septiembre de cadaaño, concentrada en la plaza delpalacio municipal de cada locali-dad, donde alegremente acudensus habitantes a una coloridafiesta popular. LA HISTORIA DE UNA GUERRA DE ONCE AÑOSPARA LA INDEPENDENCA

THE HISTORY OF AN ELEVEN YEAR WARFOR INDEPENDANCE

Primera Etapa:Antecedentes y “Grito deIndependencia”

Esta etapa comienza a principiosde la década, entre 1800 y 1810,cuando a los ricos y latifundistascolonos de la Nueva España lesurgía una independencia, ya queno deseaban compartir la riquezadel nuevo pueblo con losespañoles peninsulares a quienestambién se les llamaba “gachupi-nes”. Los intelectuales, general-mente criollos, estaban convenci-dos de las nuevas ideas liberalesde la época, y los indígenas ymestizos sufrían la enormedesigualdad social. En 1808,Napoleón ocupa España, por lotanto los españoles estaban muyocupados defendiendo su país. Elpueblo de “Nueva España”, alenterarse de la invasión francesaen la península, aprovecha parapromover el movimiento de laindependencia. Se tenía planea-do comenzar el movimiento deindependencia el 2 de octubre enSan Juan de los Lagos (Jalisco),pero por denuncias hechas, fuenecesario adelantarlo para sep-tiembre. Ya que se avisó que laconspiración había sido descu-bierta, Don Miguel Hidalgodecidió iniciar la lucha inmediata-mente en Dolores.

First Stage:Antecedents and the “Cry forIndependence” (El Grito)

This stage begins early in thedecade, between 1800 and1810, when the rich settlers ofNew Spain were eager for inde-pendence from the Crownbecause they no longer wantedto share the wealth of the newland with peninsular Spaniards,then known as “Gachupines”.The intellectuals, generally crio-llos, lived by the new liberal ideasof the times, while the Indiansand mestizos suffered from thehuge social inequalities. SinceNapoleon invaded Spain in 1808,the Spaniards where very busydefending their country. As soonas people in New Spain foundout about the French invasion tothe peninsula they took advan-tage of the opportunity andstarted promoting the movementtowards independence. The ori-ginal plan was to begin themovement on October 2nd, butdue to leaks in information, itwas necessary to move the dateup one month to September.When the leaders received newsthat their conspiracy had beendiscovered, Don Miguel Hidalgodecided to immediately begin thefight in the town of Dolores.

A las 12 de la noche del 16 deseptiembre de 1810, Hidalgollamó al pueblo tocando la cam-pana de la iglesia, este acudió alllamado y con el grito ¡”Viva laVirgen de Guadalupe!, ¡VivaFernando VII! y ¡Muera el malgobierno!”; y enarbolando elestandarte de la Virgen deGuadalupe, incitó al pueblo a le-vantarse en rebelión. A este suce-so se le conoce como el “Grito deDolores”. Hidalgo acusó a losespañoles de pretender entregarel reino a los franceses y hacerpeligrar la religión y en seguidainformó a los habitantes quequedaban exentos de pagarimpuestos e iba a realizarse laindependencia. El pueblo searmó como pudo (machetes,

At 12 pm on the night ofSeptember 16th, 1810, Hidalgosummoned the town´s peoplewith the sound of the church belland the cry of “Viva the Virgen ofGuadalupe! Vicente Guerrero e Iturbide, sonlos principales actores. Tras onceaños de lucha, los criollos y elpueblo en general empezaban aver perdida la rebelión. En el surse mantenía invicto Guerrero,con un pequeño ejército, estofue una verdadera guerrade guerrillas.

Iturbide, quien representa a laparte conservadora, decide man-darle una carta a Guerrero dondele ofrece buenas condiciones,entre ellas se reconocería sugrado, su ejército y sus tierras; yque en el caso de no llegar a unacuerdo sería él mismo quienintervendría para lograr la inde-pendencia. Viendo esto, Gue-rrero se interesó mucho en queIturbide deseara la independen-cia, así que buscó la forma deentrevistarse con él. Después delargas conversaciones en Aca-tempan queda formalizada launión de Guerrero e Iturbide.

El 27 de septiembre, el ejércitoTrigarante, con Iturbide al frente,hizo su entrada triunfal a Méxicoy el 28 se nombró al primer go-bierno independiente. Así despuésde once años de lucha México seproclama un país independiente.

Iturbide. After 11 long years inwar, the criollos and the town ingeneral were starting to feel therebellion was at a loss; while inthe South, Guerrero was leadingan undefeated guerilla warfare.

The conservative Iturbide sent aletter to Guerrero where heoffered him good conditionsfor a treaty, such as the recogni-tion of his position, his armiesand his lands, and that in thecase that no agreement wasreached, Iturbide himself wouldintercede for Independence.Guerrero was extremely interes-ted when he heard that Iturbidewas also fighting for Indepen-dence, so he accepted to meetwith him. After long conversa-tions in Acatempan, the unionbetween Iturbide and Guerrerowas formalized. Iturbide was ableto join the Spaniards and thecriollos under one same army:the Trigarante. They swore underthe same three postulates of theTres Garantías (Three Guaran-tees): union (red), independence(green) and religion (white).

On September 27, 1821, the Tri-garante army, led by Iturbide,marched triunfantly into MexicoCity, and on the next day the firstindependent government wasproclaimed. After 11 years of warMexico is an independent nation.

en el que aflora más que nunca elsentimiento patriótico entre losmexicanos. En honor a eso, ar-mamos grandes reventones enlos que comemos todo lo quenos hemos aguantado durante elaño y bebemos mucho tequila,pero también nos llenamos deorgullo impregnando las calles yel alma de verde, blanco y rojo.

Sin duda, el sello característico denuestras fiestas patrias es laexquisita gastronomía mexicana,con una variedad increíble desabores, olores y colores. Entrelos platillos típicos que se comenel 15 de Septiembre están: elpozole, los tamales, el atole ytoda clase de antojitos comoquesadillas, tacos, enchiladas,tlacoyos, etc. Pero hay unplatillo por demás especial y sim-bólico que no puede faltar enestas fechas: El chile en nogada.

Considerado internacionalmentecomo uno de los platos másselectos de la alta cocina mexi-cana por su estética y exquisitez,el chile en nogada está estre-chamente unido al proceso deemancipación de México de laCorona Española.

As the story goes, Agustín deIturbide, after signing theCórdoba Treaty which declaredthe Mexican Independence,decided to celebrate his birthday(August 28th) in the city ofPuebla. The occasion was anextremely special one, reasonwhy the Agustin nuns from theSanta Mónica Convent created aunique dish to honor the hero ina demonstration of respect andadmiration. They used seasonalingredients with which they re-presented the three colors ofwhat was then the beginning ofthe Mexican flag (green, whiteand red), devised by Iturbide witha special significance: green forindependence, white for religionand red for union.

This was how the nuns createdthe chile en nogada, an exoticmix of sweet and salty flavorsthat contains more than 20ingredients, such as beef, porkand diverse tropical fruits only inseason on August and Septem-ber. Its elaboration is extremelymeticulous: once the chiles havebeen stuffed, they are dipped inegg and served covered withingredients that symbolize ourpatriotic labarum: first the whitenogada sauce, made with nuts,cheese and milk; then it is ador-
