ContentsEditor’s NoteWell it’s with great pleasure that I can announce that as of this month those travelling to and from Phuket will be able to enjoy somewhat of a much more pleasurable experience at Phuket International Airport, as the Governor of Phuket has recently announced that the opening of the airport’s new Terminal X is well on track and should start serving travelers from 5th February 2014. I can only hope the island’s other current infrastructure improvements are also going to schedule and we will also see the completion of these sometime in the very near future.

The place to head this month definitely has to be Phuket Town, as it celebrates its own past with the Phuket Old Town Festival. Second to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, this is another activity that draws thousands and thousands of locals and tourists to the town center, and where those that attend can enjoy a host of activities which are full of local tradition and culture. Just Google Phuket Old Town Festival 2014 and you’ll find all the information you need for this spectacular event.See you there!!!

Wat Chaitaratam

Phuket is now possibly the main tourist destination in Thailand and every month tourist come to spend their holidays on the island.

Want island

hopping? You’re in the right place

Some visitors spend their holiday taking in Phuket’s scenery and relaxing on

the beaches. However, with it having many small islands surrounding it Phuket

is the perfect for wanting to go island hopping.

When we say island hopping, we don’t mean jumping on a speed boat and

spending 5 minutes at the various small islands surrounding Phuket, we mean

jumping on ferry and spending a few days away on some of the nearby larger

islands. There are a number of ferries which can take you to these islands and

get you back in time to get your flight.

In this article we give you some basic information on some of the islands, and

on how you can get there..

Koh Phi PhiPhi Phi is only 90 minutes away and the second most popular destination in

South Thailand after Phuket. Its beaches, stunning rock formations, turquoise

waters and relaxed lifestyle are why it is popular with travelers.

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy during the day including scuba

diving, snorkeling, kayaking and sightseeing, which is in addition to sun

bathing, relaxing and eating.

With everything from simple beach huts to top notch hotels everyone, on any

budget will find somewhere to stay.

Koh LantaThere are two Koh Lantas, Koh Lanta Noi and Kho Lanta Yai, Koh Lanta Yai is

where all the action is.

The island is ideal for those wanting to get away from parties, with more

walking on the beaches and watching the sunset than drinking and dancing.

However, there are plenty of bars and you can find a party if you ask around.

Ko Lanta’s west coast is lined with resorts and bungalows, however, the further

south you go, the less there is. And even when it’s busy no beach is ever full.

Koh Yao NoiKoh Yao Noi is becoming another popular destination and

is still not overly developed. Life is slower and peaceful, and

people smile and wave as you pass by. Koh Yao Noi features

first class beaches, natural forests and beautiful scenery.

The nightlife is low key and although there are a couple of

bars, they are not usually busy.

The island has limited accommodation options but there

are some basic bungalows and some luxury resorts.

All services listed below are by longtail boat and depart

from Bang Rong Pier and arrive at Manoh Pier.

Many years ago masseurs could only be found on beaches where they

performed their massages to tourists. However, that was before it became

popular, and today, you can find a massage pretty much anywhere on the

island, in shop houses, clinics, hospitals and even at airports. Massage has

not only become popular here because it is affordable, it is also because it

has a range of very real health benefits.

If you’ve never had a massage, a Thai massage is a great introduction; and it

is the most common and cheapest on offer, costing from as little as a couple

of hundred baht for one to two hours. The original Thai massage uses no

oil, and the energetic masseuses will pull your fingers, walk on your back,

and use her elbows and knees as part of the therapy. There is no need to

panic about this, if it’s too strong for you just ask here to be a bit gentler.

A good Thai massage results in lower stress levels, relief of tension and

stiffness in muscles and joints, and improvements in energy levels and

blood circulation. To put it simply, it makes you feel good.

Massage is generally considered part of complementary and alternative

medicine, and is now offered along with standard treatments for a wide

range of medical conditions and situations. Let’s have a look some of the

possible health benefits of a massage and what to expect during a massage

therapy session.

1 Stress ReliefGentle massage helps lower the heart rate. It stimulates the nerve endings

towards the surface of the skin and causes your body to increase levels of

endorphins thus causing a feeling of relaxation. When your heart rate is low

your blood pressure is also low. This allows the body to enter a relaxing rest-

and-recovery mode : an effect that lingers long after the massage is over.

BENEFITS OF A ThAI mASSAgEand what to expect

2 Boosting Immunity Several studies have measured the stress hormone called cortisol in subjects’ saliva

before and after massage sessions, and found dramatic decreases. Cortisol, which is

produced when you are stressed, kills cells important for immunity, so when massage

reduces your stress levels it also reduces the cortisol in your body. Massage therefore

increases the body’s production of various cells that boost immune-system response.

3 Reduce symptom of DepressionMassage can also boost the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which are

involved in depression.

4 Pain ManagementMassage creates chemical changes that reduce pain and stress throughout the body.

It helps limit the pain associated with migraines, as well as the amount of occurrences.

Additionally, massages have been found to alleviate the symptoms associated with

headaches, such as stress and anger.

5 Greater FlexibilityBy working on muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints, regular

massage can improve your flexibility and range of motion, keeping your joints more

fluid and making them less injury prone. You may have seen sports massage where

the massage therapist will massage areas of the body used in sports, dance or active

living. These include muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints. Just as

stretching helps physical performance, so does massage.

6 Improved Healing Time for InjuriesMassage supplements standard injury rehabilitation procedures, helps the

body pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissue and vital organs, and

accelerates the rehabilitation process.

7 Restore your Sleep PatternWhile anyone who has received a massage is no stranger to the relaxing,

calming nature of the experience, massages have also been found to affect the

brain’s delta waves, which are associated with deep sleep.

8 Breathe BetterMassage plays an important role in training the body how to relax and helps

improve breathing. Respiratory issues, such as allergies, sinus problems,

asthma and bronchitis, are one group of conditions that can benefit from

massage therapy. Massage therapy can not only improve breathing, but also

posture. This can lead to an opening of the chest area, as well as the structural

alignment and rib cage expansion needed for optimal lung function. Plus, when

the parasympathetic nervous system responds to massage your breathing rate

slows and becomes deep and regular.

9 Raise AlertnessMassages have been found to raise alertness, thus leading to more efficient

brain processing.

Shopping MallS

phUKETin

Central Festival Phuket on Bypass Road

The most complete shopping mall on the island is located just on the outskirts of

Phuket town. This multi-storey mall hosts over 100 outlets selling almost everything;

ranging from up-market clothing, silk goods, five star OTOP products, toys, accessories,

sport goodies, IT items, food, jewelry and international foods and beverages. Central

opens from 10.30am until 10pm and it’s easy to spend the whole day here if you

include watching movies, dining out at one of international restaurants and shopping.

If you don’t have wheels then it’s easy to get a taxi to and from Central. But if you do

have them it’s no problem as there’s underground parking are available. However, be

warned that spaces do get occupied quickly. Alternatively you may park outside on

the opposite side of the road where the old Thainaan Restaurant is located and also

you may also park at HomeWorks, its sister mall, and walk over the bridge to Central.

Good deals can be found in most department stores especially for seasonal wear. The

reason is that in Thailand the shops stocks foreign goods which have both winter and

summer collections. They often offer up to 30%-40% off the original price and you can

also claim VAT refunds at the airport.

In term of services, there’s a banking and finance zone with all the major banks. The B2s

book and stationary store is very large features both Thai and English language books.

DVDs and CDs. However, as these are genuine products they are more expensive than

at stalls at markets.

At Central you can have brunch, lunch and dinner without going elsewhere. There are

plenty of good restaurants offering international foods from Thai, Japan, Italy or even

Russian. And like other high standard dining places many stock great wine collections.

On the very top floor is SF cinema as well as a number of manicure and pedicure

services.

Please make sure you also check out the outdoor convention center, sometimes they

have live music, and there are also some beer gardens and chic bistros which often

have special promotions.

Jungceylon Patong

Covering 200,000 sqm Junceylon is more than just a largest shopping center, but also

an entertainment and dining center. There are four major zones including SF Cinema

City bringing you 4D motion pictures and an SF Strike Bowl.

Here you can also find Famous, a nightclub and hip rooftop beach club. Mario Land

is Patong’s biggest game zone and there’s the Shell World Museum located on the

ground floor in the Sino Phuket zone. And besides the normal SF Cinema City, there is

an XD Theater bringing you a 4D motion ride experience.

Jungceylon is situated opposite Soi Bangla, very convenient if you’re tired of the sun

or if you want to get something to eat before or after going to the beach. Jungceylon

is not only astonishing for its variety of goods and services, but also its architecture. It

is designed combining Sino-Portuguese and traditional Chinese architecture together.

They even have a catwalk that is used for fashion shows and other events that are

regularly hosted at Jungceylon.

In addition, it is a hub for exclusive designer brands and also has a special section dedicated

to traditional Thai arts and crafts. There is also a small Robinson’s within the mall.

Like other malls Jungceylon opens daily from 11am.

Another two places worth checking out are Tesco Lotus and Big C on By Pass

Rd. These large convenience stores are recommended for their selection of

groceries. However, it should be noted that they only sell alcohol between

12pm - 2pm and 5pm - 12am.

Phuket is well known as a paradise of sea, sand and sun, but sometimes the heat

can be that crucial that It’s hard to stay cool and safe without air conditioning.

Having a walk and shop in a shopping mall can save you in these case, but be

careful because it surely indulges your inner shopaholic.

Phuket has five main shopping malls containing a wide range of shops,

restaurants and other services.

Robinson Phuket Town

This one of the oldest department stores on the island, but probably won’t be

on your list as a premiere shopping destination. However, you will certainly be

able to spend some dollars on specialty items and a good could of hours here.

Robinson is located just next to another mall called Ocean and it’s surrounded

by branded restaurants like Pizza Company, Svensens Ice Cream, a 24-hr Mc

Donald’s as well as the paradise cinema complex.

Robinson itself complies of four floors. The ground floor opens at 9am offering

a bakery and Tops supermarket where you can find good imported ingredients.

The higher floors open from 10.30am and feature beauty products, ladies &

gents clothes, gift shops, and the top floor is where you can find sport wear.

One good thing about Robinson’s is that it is very easy to get a motorbike taxi

or Tuk Tuk, they can be found right outside the door. In addition, from 5pm

onwards Talad Kaset night market, adjacent to the store becomes alive, and if

you would like to experience street food this is one of the best locations.

Judgments under the Consumer Case Procedure Act

Thailand’s Consumer Case Procedure Act

B.E. 2551 (2008) was enacted to provide

consumers with easier, access to justice in

complaints against business operators.

The Act considers consumer cases to be civil

disputes that are related to the use of goods or

services. There are 4 essential provisions of the

Consumer Case Procedure Act:

1. Consumers have greater access to justice in

disputes with entrepreneurs.

2. The process for determining the truth in a

case is conducted more fairly and efficiently.

3. Procedures progress more quickly and are

guided by principles that provide consumers

with damage relief.

4. Ethical standards in the conduct of business

are strengthened.

Before this law was enacted, if there was a

dispute between business entrepreneur and

consumers, the ensuing trial had to comply

with Thailand’s Civil Procedure Code B.E. 2477

(1934), in respect of the filing of thelawsuit,

the jurisdiction, addressing the preemptory

date, and so forth.

Clearly the majority of consumers lacked the legal knowledge that would

enable them to act against the entrepreneurs. In addition, the court

procedures could be quite costly.

The Consumer Case Procedure Actauthorizes a greater level of powers to the

consumer courts, empowering them to:

• render judgmentsin cases where the consumer is the plaintiff;

• edit judgments or orders within a period not exceeding 10 years in cases

where the actual damage is not able to be recognized;

• make judgments causing entrepreneurs to provide consumers with product

replacements;

• configure fines for sanctions; and

• order businesses to announce product recalls.

Section 44 of the Act states that when a business entrepreneur that is sued

is a juristic person, the court has the power to call the partner, shareholder,

or person who has the authority to regulate the operation of the businessas

a co-defendant.

The court also has the power to adjudicate such person to be jointly liable for

the corporate debt to consumers if:

• the business operated without good faith or is involved in fraud and

deception of the consumer, or has removed or transferred assets of the

business to the benefit of any person; and

•those assets are not sufficient to pay the debt according to the complaint.

It is important to take this potential liability into consideration

beforebecoming a partner, shareholder, or a person with authority to

regulate the operation of a business that produces or sells goods or services.

EVENTS & News

Wat Chalong Temple Fair 2014 Wat Chalong was built in the early 1800s and is Phuket’s largest Buddhist temple. It’s one of Phuket’s main tourist attractions, but also an important place of worship among Thai Buddhists. A former Abbot, Luang Por Cham, is highly revered for his help in calming a Chinese worker rebellion in 1876, and his image is now enshrined at Wat Chalong in a realistic wax statue.

Wat Chalong is host to a huge festival each year during Chinese New Year. Thousands of people come to not only make merit but to enjoy the numerous tasty food offerings and nightly live music entertainment. It’s also a great place to pick up some well-priced handicrafts, plants, flowers and other goods for sale. The next Chinese New Year starts on January 31 - February 6, 2014, so the Wat Chalong festival should take place around this date.

Wat Chalong is on Luang Por Cham Road, about 8 km south of Phuket City off Chao Fa West Road.
