Winter Vacation Youth Sports Camps

Boys’ Basketball CampThis camp, for boys in grades 4-6, will help participants become more skilled and complete basketball players while having a blast playing the game! Players will work on drills to improve their skills in ball handling, shooting, rebounding, defense and strategies of the game. The camp will be run by Cooper head boys’ basketball coach David Johnson, his staff and players. Girls’ Volleyball CampGirls in grades 6-8 will learn the basic volleyball skills of serving, passing, hitting, digging and blocking. The camp will be led by the Cooper High School coaching staff and players. Skateboard Camp at 3rd LairFor the expert to the beginner, and everyone in between…Experienced instructors will teach the basics – bal-ance, pushing, dropping in, skatepark safety and etiquette to youth ages 6 and older. Equipment required is skateboard and helmet. Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are strongly recommended. All equipment is available at no extra charge. Once your registration is received, you will be sent a special waiver form along with additional information. Parents must provide transportation to 3rd Lair. Open skating is available in the af-ternoon and is included in the fee. Parents can pick up anytime in the afternoon at your convenience. When registering, please make sure you indicate the specific dates you are re-questing. Registration deadline is two weeks prior.

Sports Unlimited Multi-Sport CampCome join us for a variety of sports during this two-day camp. Boys and girls ages 6-11 will get a chance to ex-plore flag football, soccer and lacrosse in a fun and non-competitive setting. Make sure and wear comfortable clothes, tennis shoes and bring your own water bottle. Instructors pro-vided by Sports Unlimited. Youth/TeenTumbling TotsThis is a great program to start your pre-schooler, ages 3 to 4, on their way to developing basic gymnastics and tumbling skills. The kids, with the help of a parent and our gymnastics staff, will develop gross motor skills through tum-bling, get an introduction to the various pieces of gymnastics equip-ment, and have lots of fun and games. A parent must participate! Grades 7-12 Basketball LeagueJointly offered by the cities of New Hope and Crystal, this recreational league will emphasize participation and fun! Please note this program is for players who do not play on traveling or high school league teams. Partial teams may be combined with other sponsoring communities. Age divisions or genders may be combined based on total registrations. Practices will be held during the week and will be scheduled by coaches. Games will be played on Saturdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. (schedule TBD). Register by December 10 or until filled.

Rockin’ Rackets Indoor TennisThis is a great way to introduce your child to the great lifetime game of tennis. Youth WrestlingThis program, for kids in grades K-6, will help your child develop proper wrestling techniques and a positive competitive attitude. The emphasis will be on having a great time with the sport of wrestling. Musketeers Fencing ClassChildren ages 6-11 will learn real fencing skills while having fun in our spe-cial Musketeers Fencing Class! This program, provided by MN Sword Play, will introduce children to the fundamentals of fencing. With an emphasis on skill building, concentration, self discipline and fun, these classes are designed to enhance motor skill, social and per-ceptual growth by teaching safe, age appropriate foil fencing skills to each child. Rink Rat HockeySpend the best months of winter play-ing hockey outdoors! This is a co-rec program for boys and girls ages 5-11. The program consists of two pre-season practices and instructional games every Friday evening and late Sunday after-noon from January 2 to February 11. Coaches instruct and officiate all games. There will be no goalies, just goal cov-ers. Home games will be played in New Hope. Games will also be played in nearby communities, including Min-netonka, St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, Plymouth, and Crystal. Games will not be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Participants must provide their own transportation and equipment (hockey skates, stick, helmet with mask, mouth guard, shin pads, hockey gloves, elbow pads and protective cup). Revolutionary Sports – MightyStars SoccerThe MightyStars program is designed for youth ages 5-8, who wish to further enhance basic skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Par-ticipants will have the opportunity to play in games and learn the values of sportsmanship and teamwork while having fun in a semi-competitive envi-ronment. Emphasis is placed on team play and sportsmanship. This class is suitable for new and existing players. New Hope Skating SchoolNew Hope Skating School classes are based on the Ice Skating Institute’s (ISI) Recreational Ice Skating Program for ice skaters 3 years of age and older. Definitions:Tots/Pre-Alpha (Beginner): Students learn the two foot glide, forward and backward swizzles, one foot glide, backward wiggle.

ISI Beginning Hockey Skills: For kids ages 5-10. Students must be able to skate forward.

Alpha: Passed Beginner or equivalent. Students learn forward stroking, for-ward crossovers on right and left, and one foot snowplow stop.

Beta: Passed Alpha or equivalent. Stu-dents learn backward stroking, back-ward crossovers and t-stops on right and left.

Gamma: Passed Beta or equivalent. Students learn forward outside 3-turn on right and left, Mohawk combination on right and left, and hockey stop.

Delta: Passed Gamma or equivalent. Students learn forward inside 3-turn on right and left, forward edges inside and outside, bunny hop, and a choice of Shoot the Duck or Lunge to a one foot glide.

Freestyle 1: Passed Delta or equivalent. Students learn forward inside pivot, two foot spin, forward spiral, half flip, waltz jump, and backward edges inside and outside.

Freestyle 2: Passed Freestyle 1 or equivalent. Students learn ballet jump, half tow walley, half Lutz, one foot spin, two forward spirals, and dance step.

Babysitter’s TrainingThis American Red Cross course provides youth ages 11 to 15, with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to be great babysitters, plus real-world experiences to help them develop their leadership and communication abilities. The course is fun and fast-paced with hands-on activities, exciting video, role-plays and lively discussions. It teaches young people how to: care for children and infants, be a good leader and role model, make good decisions, solve problems and stay safe, communicate effectively with parents, handle emergencies such as illnesses, injuries and household accidents and learn business skills such as writing a resume and interviewing for a job. Students should bring a bag lunch. Deadline to register is one week prior to the class. Kid Smart How should you react when ap-proached by a harmful stranger or the local bully? Master Malone, a martial arts expert, teaches youth how to respond quickly to ‘no win’ situations. Participants, ages 5-12, will learn how to take action (including how to get out of holds and what to say) and how to show the confidence needed to take control of the situation. Kids should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. A parent may attend for no additional cost. Register by March 21. Safe On My OwnSpending time alone at home intro-duces you to new responsibility as you grow up. Preparing for this time will help you feel more comfortable. In this class for ages 7-10, we’ll cover arriving home, being home alone, re-sponsibilities and basic first aid. Regis-tration deadline is one week prior. Basic Aid Training (B.A.T.)Students ages 8-12 will learn emer-gency response skills, rescue breath-ing, and ways to prevent and care for choking, wounds, nosebleeds, falls and animal bites. Lessons include responses for fire safety, poisoning, water accidents, substance abuse and more. (Scouts Note: Use this class for Weeblos Readyman Badge or Junior Girl Scouts First Aid Badge.) First Aid for Children Today (FACT)This class will lead kids ages 5-8, through health promotion and injury prevention activities. Horsing Around Art ClassIs your child crazy about horses? Arabians, Mus-tangs, Palominos, they love them all! Youth ages 5-12 will learn sculpting techniques as we create a beautiful horse out of clay. But that’s not all; we will also paint the horse and make a pasture for it to

Revolutionary Sports Spring Break Camps Soccer, handball, basketball, volley-ball, tennis, badminton, floor hockey, lacrosse, flag football, and baseball! Youth in grades K-5 will benefit from a structured experience that focuses on learning and enjoying the sport, while playing fun games. Classes are coordinated by nationally licensed and certified coach John Richardson from Revoluntionary Sports. Sign up for all week or pick the days that you like the best. Participants will be divided by age and ability. No equipment or experience is necessary. Participants should come dressed appropriately with shoes, and athletic wear ap-propriate for indoor or outdoor play. Don’t forget your water bottle and a snack if you want one. H.O.M.E.H.O.M.E. provides affordable in-home services to residents age 60+ who live independently but need assistance to maintain their home. The program serves clients who are not financially able to pay the full cost of the maintenance services, as well as frail older adults who require services de-signed to meet their needs. The H.O.M.E. program can help with the following services: interior/exterior painting, door and window repair, energy-related improvements, minor plumbing and electrical work, sea-sonal yard work, general cleaning and grocery shopping. Jeeves in Bloom at the Old Log – January 26Join us at the Old Log Theater for Jeeves in Bloom! In this play, the tran-quil, peaceful English countryside be-comes anything but, when the lovable, loopy Bertie and his unflappable butler, Jeeves, arrive for a visit. Now Bertie is dodging an enraged chef wielding a meat cleaver, hiding from a starry-eyed young woman, and helping Aunt Dahlia to commit a felony. Thank heaven for Jeeves! Tony Sandler at the State Theatre – February 12We’ll arrive at the State Theatre, which is widely seen as the hallmark case of preservation in Minneapolis. It opened in 1921 and seats 2,181. The restora-tion was completed in the early 1990’s with some of the original chandeliers and murals. Tony Sandler will perform a live show with a powerful delivery of the most romantic songs ever written. Tony is an international entertainer who brings the grace and experience of decades on stage to arouse the senses of audiences with a delicate blend of humor, melancholy, and pas-sion. His 90-minute live performance

Irish in America – March 9The Irish arrived at a time of need for America. The country was grow-ing and needed men to do the heavy work of building bridges, canals, and railroads. It was hard, dangerous work. Irish immigrants fiercely loved America but never gave up their al-legiance to Ireland. Through poverty and subhuman living conditions, the Irish tenaciously clung to each other. With their ingenuity for organiza-tion, they were able to gain power and acceptance. In little more than a century Irish-Americans had moved from the position of the despised to the oval office. We’ll have lunch at Kieran’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis with a choice of fresh fish and chips or corned beef and cabbage meals with beverage. After lunch enjoy a lecture by James Rogers, editor of New Hi-bernia Review, a journal of Irish stud-ies published by the University of St. Thomas, and the vice-president of the American Conference for Irish Studies. Our trips allow you to eat at wonderful restaurants and experi-ence a host of remarkable recreational activities. Golden Strings at Lafayette Club – April 12We’re off for a classy afternoon at the Lafayette Club. “The Grand Old Lady of the Lake” is set on a hilltop overlooking Lafayette Bay on Lake Minnetonka. Presidents entertained diplomatic missions, and the famous sampled its beauties and have sung its praises over the years. The original building with over 1,000 rooms was an elaborate creation of James J. Hill and served as a center of social life. It was destroyed by fire, but private citizens who loved the area have continued the tradition of hospitality and distinction at the Lafayette Club. A delightful lunch featuring breast of chicken Florentine will be served in the ballroom overlooking the pristine grounds of the club. Bar service will not be available. Following lunch we’ll enjoy the dulcet tones of The Golden Strings, and orchestra known to liter-ally a million people in the upper Mid-west. They play music ranging from the classics to pops, from romance to jazz. Founded and lead by virtuoso violinist Clifford Brunzell, its members have memorized well over 500 musi-cal selections. Art and Soul – May 17Our first stop will be the Minneapolis Culinary Arts campus for a special lunch served by the students and staff. The first tour of the afternoon will be the Museum of Russian Art in South Minne-apolis. A docent will reveal a spectacular museum that show-cases Soviet-era Russian art. Next will be a guided tour of St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church* in South Minneapolis. The 1957 architec-ture follows a common design devel-oped in ancient Byzantium that directs the worshiper into the contemplation of God and compliments the ancient Orthodox Liturgy. Community Gyms The New Hope Commu-nity Gyms, located on the north side of Cooper High School, has two full-size basketball courts available for recreational and athletic activities.
