The community of Diamond Bar lost

a legend last month, former Mayor, Jack Tanaka, after an ex-tensive battle to cancer. The day of his passing, many flocked to social media to express their condolences to wife Wanda Tanaka and to share in the memories of the beloved Jack.

Jack was part of Diamond Bar’s City Council from 2005 to 2015, serving as Mayor twice and part of the City’s Planning Commission committee for more than three years. He was heavily involved in the Diamond Bar Breakfast Lion’s Club and was an Advisor for the Leo’s Club. Prior to his involvement with the city, Jack was a U.S. Army Sergeant and Peace Officer with the California Youth Authority and State Department of Corrections.

Jack devoted himself to the community. He supported the Miss Diamond Bar Pageant, the Dia-mond Bar Commu-nity Foundation, the Diamond Bar Library, the local Humane Society and so much more. Jack immersed himself with community service and was especially a positive role model for the youth.

A Tribute to Jack TanakaDecember 24, 1947 - August 3, 2017

Earlier this month, hundreds attended a Celebration for Jack Tanaka at Dia-mond Canyon Christian Church to honor the beloved former Mayor. The church was overflowing with people who were touched by Jack. Several speakers talked about how Jack taught them to be better husbands and about the love Jack and Wanda shared with

one another. It was ob-vious Jack was loved by so many. Following the Celebration for Jack, at-tendees gathered for a reception at the Diamond Bar Golf Course.

Jack was the heart and soul of the community. He would always have a warm smile on his face and lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his dedication and

generosity to the community, his love for wife Wanda and for the kindness he shared with those he came across.

Jack will be missed tremendously.

Condolences go out to Wanda and the rest of the Tanaka family.

As outlined in the City of Diamond Bar’s 2017-2020 Strategic Plan, one of the City Council’s main goals is

to provide residents and businesses with a “Safe, Sustainable & Healthy Community”, and that requires the City, businesses, and residents to get emergency ready.

While we cannot anticipate when a disaster may strike, we can take steps to get ready by having a family or business emergency preparedness plan. Residents can also practice their plan or get CPR or Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trained.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department recently held a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. The FEMA-approved, 21-hour training taught by firefighters, provided instruction on how to care for yourself, your family and your neighbors during a disaster. Personal connections make strong neighborhoods, and I encourage you to make those connections to make Diamond Bar a stronger, safer and more prepared community.

We strive to keep citizens informed and prepared for any emer-gency. Additional emergency preparedness information can be found on the City website under “Public Safety/Emergency Preparedness” and sent to you directly via email, phone or text messages when you sign up for an electronic subscription.Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Diamond Bar Restaurant Week scheduled to take place Friday, October 6 – Friday, October 20, 2017. Participating restaurants will offer special pre-fixed menu options. Be sure to mention you would like the “Diamond Bar Restaurant Week Special.” For

additional details, please visit www.DBRestaurantWeek.com or see ad on page seven.

As always, the City Council welcomes your comments, con-cerns, or questions. You can reach me or any other council member by calling 909.839.7010 or by using the links to our email addresses located on the “Council Members” page of the City website at www.diamondbarca.gov.

With the Powerball lottery reaching a high last month,

the community came together to take their shot at winning the jackpot. Sam Castorena, resident and business owner of Pinnacle Capital Mortgage, turned to Diamond Bar’s popular Facebook social media sites, The Original Diamond Bar Buzz and Diamond Bar Exchange, to invite the community to join him in the exciting opportunity of winning the millions. With the first jackpot at $430 mil-lion, over 75 participants took part in the fun gamble with a $5 buy in. Unfortunately, the group walked away with only $19. However, because there was no

winner of the entire $430 million, the jackpot increased to $510 million. Castorena decided to roll that $19 winning into the next round and open it up for another buy in.This time, more than 150 people participated. With no luck there, a third times the charm opportunity arose and over 350 people participated in the community Powerball opportunity for a chance to win over $758.7 million. Unfortunately, the fun ended here as the winning ticket was sold in Massachusetts. Powerball is an American lottery game offered by 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Is-lands. It is coordinated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), a nonprofit organization formed by an agreement with US lotteries. Each play costs $2, or $3 with the Power Play option. On January 13, 2016, Powerball produced the largest lottery jackpot in history; the $1.586 billion jackpot was split by three tickets sold in neighboring Chino Hills, California, Munford, Tennessee, and Melbourne Beach, Florida. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.87, but the odds of winning the grand prize are 1 in 292,201,338.00. It has been said that you are more likely to get struck by lightening than winning the Powerball. Diamond Bar is a close-knit community and win or lose the game brought residents together.

It has been 16 years since one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in

U.S. history took place that frightful day of September 11, 2001. The series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group, al-Qaeda on the United States killed 2,997 people,

injured over 6,000 others and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.

It has become customary for Americans and people from all over the world to join together in moments of silence and

remembrance. Here in Diamond Bar, students on many campuses joined together to remember the victims and honor the heroes that were af-fected.

Diamond Bar High School’s Young Ameri-cans for Freedom club covered the front lawn on

campus with 2,997 flags to represent each life lost in the tragic terrorist attacks.

Castle Rock Elementary students wore red, white and blue to commemorate the day. They also conducted their flag salute around the flag pole in the front of campus and had a moment of silence.

South Pointe Middle School also joined in on the school-wide flag salute in the center of their campus where they had live musicians perform patriotic music. A beautiful video can be viewed on their website www.southpointe.wvusd.k12.ca.us.

Americans will always remember 9/11. We will never forget.

Preventing Crime as a Community

The City of Diamond Bar and the Diamond Bar/Walnut Sheriff Station work together to lower the risk of crime

by hosting Neighborhood Watch Programs. Launched in 1972, This program is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention program in the country, bringing citizens and law enforcement together to deter crime and make com-munities safer.

Diamond Bar is home to over 80 Neighborhood Watch programs. Community Relations Deputy, Aaron Scheller, is instrumental in directing and coordinating these successful groups. He instructs members on how to identify and report suspicious activity as well as implement techniques to protect their home and personal property.

To have a successful Neighborhood Watch Program, it takes patience, planning and enthusiasm. Members must first get participants within the neighborhood to participate. The group then must estab-lish a relation-ship with law enforcement to discuss strate-gies and tac-tics to prevent crime as well as identify crime patterns. Keep-ing the group enthusiastic is also important so that members continue to be alert, observant and caring.

If you are in-terested in joining one of the 80 existing Diamond Bar Neighborhood

Watch groups or would like to start a new group in your neighborhood, please call Community Relations Deputy Aaron Scheller at 909.839.7079.

In addition to Neighborhood watch Groups, Diamond Bar also offers a Report for Reward program that gives individuals a financial incentive of up to $500 for providing information leading to the arrest of a person(s) who damaged property as a result of a realized (or attempted) residential or vehicular burglary within Diamond Bar city limits. If you have informa-tion on a crime, contact the Sheriff station at 909.595.2264. and give the dispatcher your contact information. If your tip leads to the identification and arrest of a person(s) suspected of damaging personal property as a result of a burglary incident, the Sheriff ’s Station will then forward a recommendation for reward disbursement to the Report for Reward Committee. For further information on the Report for Reward program, visit www.cityofdiamondbar.com.

For the month of October, the Dia-mond Bar Friends of the Library is

inviting everyone to participate in Read Together Diamond Bar (RTDB), an innovative program uniting people of all

RTDB will consist of book discussions, activities, programs and films throughout the month. The chosen book for adults is Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt, an untold story of the women

On the morning of July 9th, Diamond Bar resident Pamela Ingoglia began

having contractions. Husband, Tony Ingoglia, quickly packed everything and got her in the car to head to the hospital. About five minutes en route Pamela cried out to call 911 as she felt her baby com-ing. Tony quickly called 911, but luckily as they approached the intersection of Golden Springs Road and the driveway to Calvary Chapel, they noticed Deputy Sheriffs directing traffic. Tony parked the car and handed the sheriff the phone to coordinate with the responder.

Within minutes, the firefighters from station #120 arrived. It was only three pushes later and Natalie Noor Ingoglia was delivered in the front seat of the

If you look really closely around the community you may spot the infa-

mous Diamond Bar “Rocks.” Diamond Bar “Rocks” is a group that is devoted to spreading joy and happiness within the community by inspiring creativity and exploration in our beautiful city of Diamond Bar. This is done by painting rocks with positive artwork and hiding them around the community. When a rock is spotted, the finder will take a picture and post it on the Diamond Bar “Rocks” page on Facebook.

Rocks have been found in front of schools, stuck in trees, at local businesses and so many more fun places. You don’t have to be an artist, you can paint words, symbols or whatever your creative mind feels at that moment. The goal of Diamond Bar

Diamond Bar “Rocks”

“Rocks” is to get people from all over the community painting so more rocks can be found to bring joy and light to ones day. One might even discover parts

of the community they have never seen before.

Diamond Bar “Rocks” would love for you to join in on the fun. First, like the “Diamond Bar Rocks” Facebook page, then paint a rock and hide it. Be sure to paint “#Diamond Bar Rocks” on the back of your rock so that we know it came from a member of the group. The group also asks that rocks be hidden in places that will not destroy property or injure someone. Please also keep the artwork PG - rated as many children partake in the fun experience. If you come across someones rock, be sure to post it on the Facebook page.

Happy painting and exploring.

The couple and their new baby were then transported to Pomona Valley Medical Center where they received impeccable quality care. A month later, the family of four visited Fire Station 120 in which Natalie was re-united with Firefighter Jose.

“We feel honored and blessed to have a healthy child and she cer-tainly made a bold entrance into this world,” states Tony.

The Diamond Bar Community Delivers Loads to Hurrican Harvey Victims

16CommunityNews

Water Conservation. IT’S FOR LIFE.Walnut Valley Water District

www.wvwd.com

We have all seen the dev-astation that Hurricane

Harvey brought to the state of Texas leaving hundreds of thousands of people in need. Severe damage and floods made this catastrophic hurricane the worst in history; leaving the 4th largest city, Houston, under water. However, this unfortunate event brought the country together in a time of despair, and without hesitation millions of people stepped up to help.

A group right here in Diamond Bar, organized by Brittany Wysowski, Kyle Beatty and Mitch Povee, did just that by turning to the community’s social media Facebook page, The Original Diamond Bar Buzz, seeking donations of any kind to support the relief efforts in Houston and surrounding af-fected areas. Items collected consisted of water, food, clothing, toiletries, diapers and so much more. Two full trailers, towed by a filled truck and a 4Runner transport-ed the donations to Texas.

Donations were deliv-ered to First Baptist Church in Baytown, neighborhoods in Baytown, three fam-ilies that had lost everything from Bra-

zoria County, and Neighbors Emergency Clinic in Kingwood. The clinic took a big rig to the city of Beaumont that had been wiped out by Harvey. The Diamond Bar group that delivered the donations also helped with the demolishing of homes before mold set in.

“The selflessness and positivity I felt has been so overwhelming,” states Diamond Bar resident, Brittany Wysowski. “Hugging these people and feeling their gratitude is the most humbling thing.”

The aftermath of Hurricane Har-vey leaves people with an uncertain future as the recovery time of this monstrous storm could take years. Please keep Harvey victims in your thoughts and prayers.

The group thanks the community of Diamond Bar for all their generosity with the incredible amount of donations and for coming together so quickly. Your donations went a long way.

888 Dryander Dr Diamond Bar 4 Beds 2 Baths | Sold $685,000

SOLDFrom the day my husband and I met Mia, she was

informative and helpful with ideas to get our home ready for the market. Mia answered all our questions without

knowing if we were going to hire her as our agent. It took us 4 months to decide whether to sell or rent our house.

However, throughout this process Mia continued to take all our call/texts, answered all our questions and provided

recommendations without hesitation. She talked to us as if we were longtime friends, never being made to feel

unwanted. My husband had extremely high expectations on who our listing agent would be as we had moved 80

miles away. Mia passed his criteria with flying colors knowing that Mia would take care of everything. She

checked on the house regularly and took care of problems that arose. Within 2 weeks of our open house, we were in escrow! Mia had nailed the marketing to expedite the sale.

To top things off, Mia made me a photo album of my childhood home I was extremely attached to. Mia's kind,

generous and attentive attributes were always on display. If you are looking for an agent, I highly recommend Mia

Chuang. She will exceed your expectations.

Letter from the seller

Parents, students, teachers, administra-tors and our elected state representa-

tives rallied together last year to support District of Choice (DOC) and their voices have been heard. The DOC program will be extended another six years.

DOC gives parents a choice on where to send their students to school regard-less of income level or where they live. It also benefits Walnut Valley Unified Schools by bringing significant fund-ing and creating financial stability. The program has provided WVUSD students world-class programs.

DOC has been in existence for 25 years and affects over 3,500 Walnut Valley Unified School District students. Last summer, many parents felt uncertainty

when the bill failed to extend the pro-gram and feared their children would be pulled from their current schools. Petitions were created, social media groups were formed and rallies were conducted to fight for the continuation of DOC.

DOC supporters were heard and not defeated. Governor Brown in-cluded it in the state budget through the 2022-2023 fiscal year. The bill was passed in both the Assembly and Senate unanimously.

“This has been what we have been waiting for. We can all breath again and our kids do not have to worry,” states Teruni Evans, DOC par-ent. “I cannot say THANK YOU

enough to all you awesome parents! We still have work to do in the future to make permanent, but great job everyone!” PUSD’s motto this year

is The Power of Now. This refers to our growth as a Fu-ture-Ready school district where we are working to make our classrooms distinct models for 21st Century learning. Ten schools will have 1:1 digital devices (Chrome Books) for our students in the coming months. This first-phase roll-out amounts to roughly 8,500

students who will have Chrome Book computers in their pos-session. Our educational enhancements will be phased-in so that within four years, every student in our district will have a digital device that they can carry back and forth between home and school. Essentially, our students will have increased

educational access that will fully prepare them for college and careers. We are increasingly moving toward project-based learning that brings the “real world” into education. This means that you also will be more engaged. Your child’s creativity and enthusiasm will be called upon to meet these innovations in learning. The Power of Now means that we have the opportunity right now to maximize these changes. In PUSD we are fortunate to have some of the best teachers in California. Our teachers have won awards, honors, recognitions, but most of all they have won our students’ hearts. I know that in 2017-18, you will continue to inspire them and help them to make the most of their full potential. Thank you for making me Proud to be PUSD!

WHAT LARRY’S CLIENT SAYI went through two brokers with half your skills before I got smart and hired you. People with dis-abilities and medical issues have needs that most people don’t. You understood what was needed and worked with me in showing the property. Within 2 weeks we had an offer and closed escrow soon thereafter. One thing that really stood out was the way you kept me informed each step of the process. I highly recommend that people hire you first and get the job done right! Many thanks, - Mike Peterson
