INTRODUCTION

Akbar Ibn Abdullah, Editor

It gives us immense pleasure to render tribute to the last of the Mujahids of the century that touched the hands of

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib and received his blessings when, as a child, he was placed on Hazrat Sahib’s

lap and he sucked Hazrat Sahib’s thumb.

I had the distinct honour and pleasure of meeting the late Malik Sahib during all of my last three visits to the Central

Mosque in Lahore. Prior to these visits Hazrat Ameer, Dr. Abdul Karim Saeed Pasha Sahib, arranged a phone

conversation with Malik Sahib, who blessed me for the yeomen service I am doing for the worldwide Lahore

Ahmadiyya Movement.

Almost everyone I spoke to who knew him bore testimony that the late Malik Sahib, the last of the most senior

stalwarts of the Jama‘at, with his piety and steadfast meditation had earned the favours and blessings of Almighty

Allah to become one of the Auliyas (Friends) of Allah and was amongst the saintly groups, a recipient of divine

dreams.

It is reported that while Hazrat Ameer was deciding upon whether to stay in his prestigious teaching position in the

Government Hospital in Abbotabad or accept the position of Ameership in Lahore, Malik Sahib saw a dream in

which Hazrat Ameer Sahib was the Ameer of the Jama‘at.

May Allah have mercy on the departed soul of Malik Saeed Sahib and grant him a peaceful resting place in the

highest pedestal of Jannate-Firdouse. Aameen. We also pray that Allah (swt), in His bountiful mercy and graceful

blessings, may descend His solace and bounties on the surviving families of the Marhoom and the Jama‘at and help

them to bear the burden of this irreparable personal loss with patience, courage and perseverance. Aameen.

The members of The HOPE Bulletin Team are proud to salute and honour such a noble saint and staunch soldier of

Islam and Ahmadiyyat by publishing this special tribute supplement in his remembrance. May Allah be pleased with

him. Aameen.

Special thanks to Central Anjuman for the biography and photographs of the Marhoom, and Dr. Jawad Ahmad of

the UK for the photographs which were taken at the Central Mosque.

According to the Holy Qur’an, death does not bring the life of man to an end; it only opens the door to a higher form of life. Just as from dust is evolved the man, from the deeds which he does is evolved the higher man. As from the small life-germ grows up the man and he does not lose his individuality for all the changes which he undergoes, so from this man is made the higher man, his attributes being changed and he being made to grow into what he cannot conceive at present.

Connection between the two lives

The life after death, according to the Holy Qur’an, opens out a wide vista of progress before man, a new world of advancement before which the progress of this life sinks into insignificance: “And certainly the Hereafter is much superior in respect of degrees and much superior in respect of excellence” (17:21). The connection between the two lives, the life on this earth and the life after death, is established in the clearest words. Heaven and hell are not places of enjoyment and torture to be met with only after death; they are realities even here. The Hereafter is not a mystery beyond the grave; it begins in this very life. For the good, the heavenly life, and for the wicked, a life in hell, begins even here: “And for him who fears to stand before his Lord are two Gardens” (55:46). “O soul that art at rest, return to thy Lord, well-pleased with Him, well-pleasing Him: so enter among My servants and enter into My paradise” (89:27-30).

IN MEMORIAM

Brief life history and spiritual experiences of a saintly person

The late Malik Saeed Ahmad Sahib

Malik Saeed Ahmad’s family hailed from Ludhiana, India.

His grandfather, Muhammad Hassan, was a well-known hakim in the area, and was a close associate and

friend of Maulana Muhammad Hussain Batalwi, a well-known Ahl-i Hadith scholar in the late 18th

century. Whenever Maulana Batalwi visited Ludhiana, he would stay at Muhammad Hassan’s house.

Ahmadis are aware of the fact that Maulana Muhammad Hussain Batalwi was a classmate of Hazrat Mirza

Sahib during his student life and showed great respect to him and was so respectful towards Hazrat Mirza

Sahib that at times he would even straighten his shoes so that he could put them on easily. Maulana

Batalwi would talk highly about Mirza Sahib’s righteousness and spiritual excellence.

Being an Ahl-i Hadith, Muhammad Hassan was also among those who were waiting for the Reformer

(Mujaddid) of the 14th

century Hijrah. Maulana Batalwi often advised Muhammad Hassan to take the

pledge at the hands of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad if Hazrat Mirza ever claimed to be the Reformer (Mujaddid)

of the 14th

century Hijrah. Consequently, Muhammad Hassan went to Hazrat Mirza Sahib and requested

him to take his pledge but Hazrat Sahib told him that Allah had not yet allowed him to take pledge. As a

result this, Mr. Hassan asked of Hazrat Mirza Sahib that if Allah chose him to be the Reformer of the

century and allowed him to take pledge, then he should please let him know and he would like to be

among the first who would take his pledge. Thus when Hazrat Mirza Sahib was in Ludhiana and was

allowed by Allah to take pledge, he sent a message to Muhammad Hassan. However, Muhammad Hassan

was away in the village Jassian. Arrangements were then made to convey the message to him in Jassian.

Unfortunately, when the message was conveyed to Muhammad Hassan he was so sick that he could not

travel, but even in that condition he managed to undertake the journey by travelling in a bullock-cart and

reached Ludhiana and got the blessed pledge. Thus, his name was included among the first 313 persons

who took the pledge.

Offering of salutations to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings of Allah be on him) to

attain a spiritual status after undergoing intense meditation and inner struggle is no doubt an uphill task,

but to accept the message and to remain firm is harder. In 1891, Allah Almighty told Hazrat Mirza Sahib

that the Messiah of Nazareth had died and the prophecy about the second coming of the Messiah was, in

fact, to be fulfilled in the person of someone to be raised from among the Muslim Ummah as the Reformer

of the 14th

century Hijrah. As he had been appointed as the Reformer of the 14th

century, he was that

Promised Messiah and the mission which was to be fulfilled by the coming Messiah shall be performed by

him. At this, Maulana Batalwi got annoyed and asked Hazrat Mirza Sahib why he had not consulted him

before making his claim. Hazrat Mirza Sahib replied that it is Allah’s command and so consultation with a

human being is out of question. Maulana Batalwi then said: “I have exalted Ghulam Ahmad and would

debase him now.” A verdict of kufr or declaring him to be out of the pale of Islam was thus signed by

religious leaders across India and some Arab countries. As Muhammad Hassan was a close friend of

Maulana Batalwi, he asked him to renounce Hazrat Mirza Sahib because of his claim of being the

4

Promised Messiah, which by doing he had made an unbeliever (kafir). But Muhammad Hassan Sahib, by

the grace of Allah, stood firm by his pledge and declined Maulana Batalwi’s demand.

In the biography of Muhammad Hassan published in Yaad-i Raftgaan, two inspiring incidents regarding

Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s spiritual excellence have been mentioned.

Firstly, Munshee Arora was a dedicated Ahmadi and came to Hazrat Mirza Sahib and wept bitterly. When

Hazrat Sahib asked the reason he replied that an Ahmadi mosque in Kapurthala, India had been occupied

by force by non-Ahmadi Muslims who had stopped Ahmadis from offering payers in it. A petition had

been filed in the court and an Arya Hindu, who had a personal grudge against Ahmadis, was the judge for

the case. As the case was in the last stage and there seemed to be no hope for winning the case, a request

for prayer was made to Hazrat Mirza Sahib. After making du‘a, Hazrat Mirza Sahib predicted that, “Insha

Allah, with the help of Allah Almighty, Ahmadis would win case.” Munshi Arora Sahib and Muhammad

Hassan Sahib went straight to the court where the judgment was shortly to be announced. When these two

gentlemen told members of the Jama‘at about the prediction of Hazrat Mirza Sahib, they all shouted

“Allah-o-Akbar!” Upon hearing this loud takbir, the judge sent his reader to find out the reason for this

cry. The reader came back and told the judge that the spiritual leader of the Ahmadis had predicted that

judgment would be in their favour. The judge replied that he had written a decision against the Ahmadis

and would announce it the day after next.

Two days later, on the day of the next hearing, when the judge was getting ready to go to the court to

announce his judgment, he suddenly cried out and fell on the ground. A doctor was called immediately

and after examining him, he reported that the judge had died. The case was thus transferred to a new judge

who reviewed the case anew and gave a decision in favour of the Ahmadis. Al-hamdo Lillaah! This is how

the words of Allah proved true.

Once, when the opposition against Ahmadis was at its peak, obstacles were placed outside Muhammad

Hassan’s clinic in Ludhiana so that no patient could enter his clinic for treatment. This situation continued

and Muhammad Hassan Sahib suffered heavy financial losses and was very upset. In these circumstances,

he wrote a post card daily to Hazrat Mirza Sahib with a request for prayer. Hazrat Mirza Sahib always

replied and encouraged him by telling him that by the grace of Allah his problems would soon be over.

During this time, Hazrat Mirza Sahib had predicted that a mysterious disease would spread in Ludhiana

and patients from all around the area would come to him for treatment and, by the grace of Allah, they will

be cured. Accordingly, a mysterious disease did spread all over Ludhiana. The wife of a famous Hindu got

inflicted with the disease. She was initially treated with Allopathic medicine, but could not recover. Then

the family contacted Muhammad Hassan, who treated her, and the patient recovered completely. That was

how he became a very popular hakim among Hindus and a large number of Hindus started coming to his

clinic for treatment. On the other hand, Muslims were deprived of his treatment due to the fatwah of the

Muslim clerics. Many people died because of this disease and ultimately Muslims were compelled to

remove the restrictions imposed by them and they too went to him for treatment. Thus, Allah blessed

Muhammad Hassan’s practice and he became financially well off. Praise be to Allah for His special grace.

Malik Saeed Sahib was born on July 31, 1906 in Ludhiana in Malik Khuda Bakhsh’s family. It is narrated

that his name was suggested by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib. When Malik Saeed Sahib was only

few months old, Muhammad Hassan, with his daughter- in-law, went to see the Promised Messiah.

Hazrat Mirza Sahib would meet all his followers and their families with great love and affection. So, out

of sheer love and affection, he took Malik Saeed lovingly onto his lap. Surprisingly, the baby immediately

started sucking one of Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s thumbs.

5

His father was working for the Irrigation Department and from time to time was posted to different Water

Head works. Most of the time, though, he resided with his family in government accommodations. Saeed

Ahmad was still a child when his mother died. His father, Malik Khuda Bakhsh, later remarried. The life

of the child Saeed Ahmad became hard day by day. His step- mother did not treat him well and his father

was busy in the government service. Childhood, the most loving period of one’s life, was lost to him. At

times he did not have shoes and at other times he had to hide the holes in his clothes. Sometimes a kind

neighbour would purchase clothes for him. Meanwhile, half-brothers and -sisters were also born. When he

entered his youth his step-mother died and his father married again.

His new mother came to the house with her mother. The new mother’s attitude was also not good. Malik

Saeed Sahib had become used to his step-mother’s treatment but his half-brothers and -sisters were quite

young and conditions at home were extremely unbearable for them. Once he and his half-brother Aziz

went to Qadian and stood by the grave of the Promised Messiah and in desperation complained about the

entire situation. We do not worship graves, but maybe this was a moment of acceptance of their prayer and

after sometime the new step-mother got sick. When she did not recover from local treatment, she was sent

to the Jama‘at doctors at Lahore, Dr. Syed Muhammad Hussain Shah Sahib and Dr. Mirza Yaqub Baig

Sahib. Unfortunately, in spite of the best efforts of the doctors, she could not survive. Later on, Malik

Khuda Bakhsh married a third time.

During this period, Malik Saeed Ahmad was to appear for the Secondary School examination. At the

school, a Hindu couple taught children free of cost during summer vacations and in the evenings, as well.

Their affection for the students impressed him very much.

Malik Sahib enjoyed a good reputation in the area for his fine character and amicable behaviour. He was

young, smart, respectful, well-spoken, and helpful. After completing secondary school, he did not get a job

for years and remained unemployed. He would assist his grandfather at his clinic and here he acquired fair

knowledge of herbal medicine.

His paternal great-grandmother was blessed with 114 years. While she lived, he served her well. Though

so old, she was very keen to go to her village, which was many kilometres away, and Saeed Ahmad would

take her. They would always travel on foot and, because of her old age, she walked very slowly, and

would at times take rest and then continue the journey. He would accompany her very patiently, looking

after her very well.

At times, he travelled forty miles by foot (twenty miles while going and twenty miles while coming back).

When his grandfather, Muhammad Hassan, got sick, he served him well too. When Muhammad Hassan

died, the main market in the city called, Chauraa Bazaar, was closed as a mark of respect for the deceased.

Malik Saeed Ahmad stayed in Delhi for quite some time. A branch of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at-i e

Islam was established in Delhi. The head of the branch was Maulvi Umar-ud-Din Shimlavi, who was a

very scholarly preacher and also very hospitable. He cooked food himself and served the guests. The

branch was near the Red Fort, Delhi. Malik Saeed Sahib also resided in the Mission House and assisted

Maulvi Shimlavi Sahib in his assignments.

He started his career in the Police Department. During his service, he had undergone training for the

Secret Service, as well, but afterwards he was transferred to the Accounts section of the Police

Department. During World War II, on the instructions of the British Government, the Police Department

was merged with the Army and Malik Sahib was sent to Burma Front. After the creation of Pakistan,

6

Malik Sahib joined the Police Accounts Department of Pakistan and worked there till his retirement. His

colleagues and senior officers always appreciated his honesty and integrity.

He was married to a daughter of an agriculturist living in a village near Ludhiana. It was an Ahmadi

family. Hajara Bibi, his wife, was much younger, but proved to be a very good companion. Allah blessed

him with four sons and a daughter. Although Malik Sahib had very meagre salary, yet his wife managed

the house very well and always remained grateful to Allah.

He worked hard in providing a good education to children. They all married.

When he became old, however, he had to bring up his daughter’s two granddaughters, Uzma and Salma.

He worked hard for them. He took them to and from school. He helped them with their homework. He

looked after them very well in every possible way.

After he retired from the Police Department, he did various jobs. In one, he worked as an accountant in a

flour mill located outside Sherawala Gate, Lahore and owned by Sheikh Mian Saeed Ahmad.

He was a kind, affectionate and generous person and a dedicated Ahmadi. For a long time he was the

treasurer of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman.

When he moved from Ahmadiyya Buildings to Kot Lakhpat, he got a job at Ittefaq Foundries as head of

security. Like other industries, Ittefaq Foundries was also nationalized during the regime of Prime

Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. During his term, General Zia ul Haq had imposed Martial Law. During this

time, a serving colonel of the Pakistan Army was appointed at Ittefaq Foundries on deputation. One day he

called Malik Sahib to his office, and afterwards he treated him very nicely. On another day he told Malik

Sahib that millions of tons worth of cast iron was stored in the factory area and that they could easily take

out one trolley daily and sell it and distribute the money between them. According to him, there was no

chance of Malik Sahib being caught, as the gate pass was issued by the colonel. But Malik Sahib bluntly

refused. The colonel did not give up the idea and continued his efforts to persuade him. One day, he

advised Malik Saeed Sahib to consult his wife as ladies are comparatively wiser than males in this regard.

When he continued his offerings, Malik Sahib went on leave and kept extending his leave until he finally

left the job, in spite of the fact that he really needed it financially.

He then got another job. The job description was that he had to deliver a small packet to a costumer after

receiving a receipt. He realized within few days that there was something suspicious about the

arrangement. It was a good salaried job and he badly needed the money, but he left the job nonetheless

since it looked like some narcotics business to him. Allah guided him to the right path and he was thus

saved from disaster.

He had great love for and attachment to Abrar Ahmad Sayal, Prof. Ijaz Ahmad Sayal, and rest of the

family of Darus Salaam, New Garden Town, Lahore. All the brothers regarded Malik Sahib as their father.

Their children called him “Dada Abbu” and so he became Dada Abbu of the whole family. When he

complained to Allah regarding his own sons’ painful attitude, he was told in a vision by Allah that Abrar

Ahmad and his brothers are his sons. These words of Allah continued coming to him till his death, and the

brothers served him well. Mariam Abrar’s care and hospitability, like that of a daughter, was

commendable.

7

Malik Sahib had an impressive personality. He was an intelligent and prudent person and was blessed with

farsightedness. He was capable of correctly understanding situations and acted in a proper manner. He had

great sense of humour.

During the 1953 anti-Ahmadiyya riots, Malik Sahib’s father’s house in Faisalabad was attacked and the

building suffered great damage. To save himself and his family, Malik Khuda Buksh moved them to the

first floor. When the attackers had broken the main gate of the house and stormed in, Malik Khuda Buksh

warned them that if anyone moved further he would be shot dead. The attackers did not stop, so Malik

Khuda Buksh opened fire and one person was killed and another was injured. Police arrested him.

Influential people of the Jama‘at helped him as much as they could and made his stay in jail as

comfortable as far was possible.

At that time Malik Saeed Ahmad Sahib was posted in Dera Ghazi Khan. He came from there to pursue his

father’s case. During hearing the judge asked the attackers: “Did you try to attack the house of Malik

Khuda Buksh so that he had to open fire in self defense after you broke the main gate of the house?” The

opposing party replied: “We did not break the main gate; rather, we cried aloud “Allah-o-Akbar” and it

was due to the spiritual power of the takbir that the gate crashed.” On hearing this, the judge said: “If your

spiritual power is so strong, then raise a cry here and let me see how the door of the court crashes.” The

pressure was too much on the judge, however, and the case lingered on. When the situation calmed down,

Malik Sahib’s father was released.

Malik Saeed Ahmad Sahib was always ready to help anybody. He would get children admitted into

schools and get the fees exempted, take patients to the doctor or hospital, would accompany others to

government offices to attend to their matters. He did not have any worldly status or authority, but it was

his high sense of sympathy which prompted him to help people in any way he could. Allah has mentioned

in the Holy Quran the high spiritual reward for the people who offer midnight or Tahajjud prayer and are

on the path of righteousness.

Thankfulness was another distinguishing characteristic of Saeed Ahmad’s personality. He would express

gratitude even if someone did him a small service.

Maulana Aftab-ud-Din Ahmad was Secretary of the head office of the Woking Muslim Mission in Lahore.

Malik Saeed Ahmad, on Maulana Aftab-ud-Din Ahmad’s advice, used to voluntarily distribute literature

published by the Mission. He would distribute booklets at different places, including the Punjab Civil

Secretariat. During that time the Punjab Secretariat had senior British officers who were quite influential.

Normally people would not dare to visit them without an appointment. Malik Sahib would open their door

and step in. At times these officers would get angry and shout at him about why he entered without

permission He would reply that he just wanted to deliver a gift and would hand over the booklets.

Hafiz Baba Raj Sain, a saintly person, used to live in the Chung area in Lahore. A large number of people

had great regard for him. According to instructions from Allah, he stayed in different places of Sind and

Punjab. Finally, he settled permanently in Chung, and after his death he was buried there. Malik Saeed

Ahmad Sahib met him during a marriage ceremony, and they became close friends. Whenever Malik

Sahib visited his place he always tried to do some service to please him. Sometime after the 1974 Malik

Sahib enquired of Baba Raj Sahib in public: “What is your opinion about Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, as

people consider him a non-believer?” Baba Raj meditated on this and after quite a long silence said: “Who

asked this question?” Malik Sahib replied that it was him. Baba Ji then boldly said: “Mirza Ghulam

Ahmad is the Imam of the time and whoever will stand against him will be questioned about it.” On

hearing this, his followers said: “Your Holiness, we have not only been speaking against him, but have

8

also been abusing him.” Baba Raj Sain replied: “Allah is Beneficent and Merciful. You must ask

forgiveness from Him.” They all sought Allah’s forgiveness.

Although, he was an ordinary person and had no worldly status or influence, yet Allah Almighty bestowed

His blessings on him and he enjoyed great respect. The Holy Quran says: “And there endures forever the

person of your Lord, the Lord of glory and honour” (55:27). And elsewhere it says: “And You exalt

whom You please and abase whom You please. And in Your hand is the good” (3:26).

Allama Iqbal was a close friend of Malik Sahib’s uncle, Khair-ud-Din. After he retired from the Railways,

he set up a business in Lahore so that he could remain close to Allama Iqbal. During his early youth Malik

Sahib came to Lahore from Ludhiana to meet his uncle. He requested him to take him along when he was

to visit Allama Iqbal. Allama Iqbal received Malik Sahib and his uncle with great affection.

When Malik Sahib was posted in Jalundhar, India, the Quaid-e Azam came on a visit to that city. The

members of the Muslim Students Federation removed the horses from the Quaid’s carriage with the

passion that they would pull the carriage instead of the horses. During this procession Malik Sahib was

performing his duty as a policeman. Out of sheer enthusiasm he also joined the group in pulling the

carriage. His colleague, Balak Ram, reported the matter to the superior officers and an inquiry was set up

on the issue. He was called to appear before a British officer, whose his first question was: “Did you pull

the cart of a political leader (Quaid-e Azam) while in your police uniform?” Malik Sahib replied “Yes.”

The officer further asked: “Why?” Malik Sahib replied: “The Quaid-e Azam is a Muslim leader, and being

a Muslim, I was overwhelmed by emotions.” The British officer excused him and did not take any action,

as he had spoken the truth, otherwise he could have taken action against him.

Malik Saeed Ahmad was very pious, and through intense prayers, was blessed by Allah. He prayed for

people and Allah accepted his prayers. People requested him to make istikhara, or seek Allah’s guidance,

for matters about which they were not sure whether they should do or not. Allah would often bless him

with an answer. However, in 2008-2009, he was stopped by Allah from doing so, but still he continued to

pray on his own for people till his death.

Dr. Saeed Ahmad Khan Sahib, Ameer-i Jama‘at III, was ill during his last days, that is, in 1996. Malik

Sahib prayed intensely for his health. He was told by Allah: “His life is precious.” Then later on he heard a

voice about him: “How much life remains?” At that time, Dr. Saeed Ahmad Sahib was ninety years old.

In 2005 Malik Saeed Ahmad Sahib sustained a leg fracture and had to undergo surgery and had a steel

plate and screws inserted in his leg to fix the fracture. Physiotherapy was also done, but still he could not

walk. He faced this handicap with courage and patience and continued his prayers. His daily routine was

reading newspapers, watching TV news, chatting with visitors, and of course offering his prayers

regularly.

He used to pray intensely for peace in Muslim countries, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was told

to recite a verse of Surah Fatihah, Eeyaka na‘budu wa eeyaaka nasta‘een (Thee do we serve and Thee do

we beseech for help), frequently, and Allah would rid Muslim countries of the nefarious plans of the

Allied and American forces.

Many a time when Malik Sahib suffered from some ailment, Allah prescribed for him medicine, which

worked.

9

Many people were granted health through his prayers. His advice to all family members was to recite, Yaa

Allah, Yaa Rahmaan, Yaa Raheem (O Allah, O the Beneficent, O the Merciful).

Malik Sahib’s mother died during his childhood. A child without a mother suffers a great deal of

deprivation. In such difficult times the sympathy and prayers of Syed Asad Ullah Shah Sahib were a great

source of support and comfort for him.

Till his last days, he intensely prayed to earn Allah’s pleasure and offered Tahajjud prayers with more

passion and devotion. During these prayers he would not only offer prayer, but would also perform

different recitals glorifying Allah.

He was very particular about physical cleanliness. When he was in good health he always took a bath

before offering Tahajjud prayers.

He recited Darood Sharif often and loudly. When he felt that other members of the family may be

disturbed, he lowered his recitation. A few months before his death, when he was residing at Abrar

Ahmad’s house, at about 2 am, after Tahajjud prayers, he would glorify Allah, and sometimes this would

continue for an hour.

He was very particular about Zuhr and Asr prayers. During his service in the Police Department, his senior

officers were British. Even though Zuhr and Asr prayers fell during office hours, Malik Sahib never

missed them. Sometimes officers would even check to see where where he went during his lunch break.

Sometimes he combined Zuhr and Asr prayers due to shortage of time, more so during his old age. In his

last days he was mostly at home, and if any visitor came to see him he would ask the visitor to lead the

prayer.

Today we only talk of the worldly and political factors which brought Pakistan into being but forget those

spiritual and righteous people who prayed intensely day and night for its emergence. The prayers of Hazrat

Mirza Sahib for the defense and raising the standard of Islam and Muslims should not be ignored.

Similarly, the great concern and intense prayers of Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ali for Pakistan can be

judged from frequent appeals he made in the weekly Paigham-i Sulh to the members of the Jama‘at. His

speeches and sermons have always been very passionate on the subject of Pakistan. Allah Almighty

accepted our individual and collective prayers.

Most of our members may be aware that Asad Ullah Shah Sahib, a saintly person, regularly kept optional

fasts; sometimes on special occasions he would keep fast continuously for months. He passionately prayed

for the emergence of Pakistan. Hazrat Asadullah Shah Sahib kept fast for six months with extreme intense

and devotional prayers for the success of the Muslims’ struggle for independence. It was the devout and

tearful prayers of such saintly and righteous persons for the emergence of Pakistan that earned acceptance

with Allah and Pakistan emerged as the fifth Muslim state in the Muslim world. O Allah, shower Your

choicest mercy and blessings on the departed soul of Syed Asad Ullah Shah Sahib. Amin!

It was Asad Ullah Shah Sahib who motivated Malik Sahib to keep voluntary fasts in his youth for spiritual

elevation. It was on his advice that he undertook 40 days’ exclusive worship at the shrine of Hazrat

Nizam-ud-Din Auliya. Again, on the advice of Shah Sahib, he did exclusive worship for 40 days at the

shrine of Datta Ganj Bakhsh in Lahore. When Malik Sahib was in his nineties, he kept fast each year for

40 days, from 21 October to 30 November 30.

10

In January 2012, a family member persuaded Malik Sahib and made special arrangements to keep a fast.

Then Malik Sahib insisted to continue it further, but family members did not allow him to do so and this

made him sad for many days.

In the last ten days of Ramadan he was regular in observing A‘htikaaf in the Darus Salaam mosque.

During these days of special prayers and devotion he used to offer special prayers for his friends,

especially the late beloved Hazrat Ameer III, Hazrat Dr. Saeed Ahmad Sahib.

In August 2011 he entered the 106th

year of his life and it proved to be his last Ramadan. By the grace of

Allah he managed to keep fast for the whole month. Now the holy month of Ramadan will be starting in

July, but unfortunately we will miss Malik Sahib and his inspiring devotional recitations during iftar and

sehr. His presence was a great inspiration for us as he always prompted us to say our prayers, especially

Tahajjud. All we can do is to submit to Allah, Who is Ever-Living, and pray for all our departed ones.

May Allah grant Malik Sahib high rank in the hereafter. May he be granted companionship of our master,

Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him), and may He graciously grant him

companionship of the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad.

Amin!

CONDOLENCES

Captain Abdus Salam Khan, Cucamonga, California, U.S.A.

Dear Akbar Sahib, ASA.

Much aggrieved to hear about the sad demise of Malik Muhammad Saeed Sahib. May Allah grant him an

elevated place in paradise and grant fortitude to his family to bear his loss. Amen.

I came to know him intimately during the Eitekaaf sessions we used to celebrate together in the Darus-

Salam Mosque in the nineties. He was one of the vanishing breed of Ahmadis who had the mark of

Ahmadiyyat on their faces and who had seen the halcyon days of Ahmadiyyat in the early part of the 20th

century.

His countenance bore a spiritual aura that is best described by the following revelation of the Holy Imam:

Ishq Ilaahee wussay moonh tay ... waliyaan eh nishaanee.

The love of God is inscribed on their faces ... and this is the hallmark of the Auliya (Friends of

Allah).

Your brother-in-grief.

Capt. Abdus Salam Khan

Dear Hazrat Ameer

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahe wa Barakatuhu.

15

We are very deeply saddened to learn that our dear elder Malik Mohammad Saeed sahib has left this world

to meet with our Maker. Inna-lillahe wa Inna Ilaihi rajioon.

We pray that Allah ta’ala grants his soul eternal peace and abode in the highest pedestal of Jannat-ul

Firdous among His especially chosen ones - aameen.

Malik Mohammad Saeed Marhoom had remained a very staunch and dedicated member of the Lahore

Ahmadiyya Movement even at the ripe old age of 105. Recently he had related details of the visit to

Lahore by Lord Headley with Khwaja Kamal-ud Din about eighty (80) years ago and to him it appeared as

if the event took place very recently as he could recall vividly the details of that visit. He mentioned that

the roads along which they travelled were full of people who wanted to see an Englishman who had

accepted Islam. There were thousands of people at the gatherings were they were in attendance to see the

visit of such a prominent British personality. There were many other stories and events of which he gave

details as his memory remained sharp till the end.

In recent years during the Salana Duaiyya (Annual Prayer Gathering) or any other occasion when I visited

Lahore, he would show me the photo of my grandchildren and tell me that he always prays for them as

well as for me and my family, for which we are very appreciative.

We offer our fervent prayers for his soul: O soul that are at rest, return to your Lord, well-pleased (with

Him), well-pleasing (Him). So enter among My servants, and enter My Garden! (89:27-30)

We also pray that Almighty Allah grants you, his loved one and the members of the Jamaat solace and

sabr to bear this sad and irreparable loss at a time of great anguish. Please convey our heartfelt sympathy

and condolences to all concerned.

Assalaamu'Alaikum Wr Wb.

1. Thank you for the very sad news - but yet admirably significant news - that we in the AAII(L) and

(perhaps in Pakistan also) have lost our oldest asset, as human-capital, who arose directly from the full-

maturity days of the 14th Hijri Mujaddid, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib.

2. The Marhoom, Malik Mohammad Saeed Sahib, was born in 1907, one year before the Mujaddid

passed on to his Maker. Although I never met the Marhoom, but common sense dictates that the Marhoom

Malik Mohammad Saeed Sahib had carried about on his great mind, an unequalled library of history:

3. He witnessed the 14th Hirji Mujaddid; he witnessed the governance of the British Raj over India;

he witnessed the initial registration and commencement of the AAII(L) in May 1914, and he also

witnessed the separation of Qadiannism from the mainstream truthfulness of Ahmadiyyat, which was

personally-initiated by the 14th Hijri Mujaddid; he witnessed the initial 59 Trustees setting up of AAII(L);

he witnessed the construction of the Ahmadiyya Buildings; he witnessed the partition and formation of

Pakistan from all-India on 14th August 1947; he witnessed the pioneering leadership in Pakistan of

16

Muhammad Ali Jinnah; he witnessed the making of the 1st Constitution of Pakistan; he witnessed the

changes of Hazrat Ameer positions right from Maulana Muhammad Ali through to our present Hazrat

Ameer; he witnessed the amendment of the Pakistan Constitution against Ahmadis; he witnessed the great

wars of WWI and WWII, as well as border-wars with neighbours; he witnessed the landing of man on the

moon, and he witnessed the greatest widespread translation of the Holy Qur’an and other very important

Islamic books in many of the world’s leading languages; he witnessed the curve in the rise and decline of

Christianity (the “breaking of the cross”) in many parts of the world. After such experiences in his life, he

has now returned to his Maker: Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Ilehi Rajewoon.

4. May Allah place the soul of our departed Marhoom Malik Mohammad Saeed Sahib to the highest

pedestal in the Great Kingdom of Jannat.

5. There are very few people who are similarly blessed to witness such great aspects of history and in

so doing, themselves also becoming part of history.

6. The Janaza Gaibana for the Marhoom will be held this Jumu‘ah when we have larger gathering of

our members. Wassalaam.

My Respected Hazrat Ameer-e-Qaum, & Brothers and Sisters:

As-Salamu-Alikum wrbk.

We have just received the email message from Brother Amir Aziz (General Secretary, AAIIL) and have

learnt with great sadness of the passing away of our senior and oldest member, Malik Saeed Sahib.

It is a very sad message, but, of course, “Surely we are for Allah and to Him we return.”

We shall be very grateful indeed if our deepest sympathy be passed to the family and the Jamaat and we

join you and pray for the departed soul that may Allah bless his soul in the heavens of eternity. May he be

amongst those whom Allah has promised that they are successful one.

May Allah help his all family members to bear this great loss with patience and perseverance.

I conduct Jumuah prayers in Suva, Fiji and certainly will be performing Salat-e-Janaza Ghaibana.

May Allah give courage and guidance to the family and all affected by the passing away of Malik Sahib.

Yours sincerely,

Mr.& Mrs. Fazal Haq

The UK jamaat holds a meeting on the first Sunday of every month. Every month two different people

speak on the subjects of their choice. One is a younger member, preferably a teenager, and another person.

17

It was my turn this Sunday to speak and upon hearing the sad news that Malik Saeed had gone to a better

place I decided that we should make this a commemorative meeting for our departed elder.

A chapter in the history of the Ahmadiyya Movement closed with Malik sahib’s death as he was the last

person to take the baiat on the hand of the Promised Messiah. Malik sahib said he could not remember

meeting Hazrat Mirza sahib because when he took the baiat he was very small. He could not remember

the event but he wonderfully fulfilled the conditions of the baiat.

One way in which he fulfilled his baiat was to carry on the work of the Movement to the last. Every year

he would come to the annual jalsa. He would attend the whole day and listen to all the speeches. He

himself participated and made a speech. He also took part in the annual fortnight-long Tarbiati class

(training class) make a speech to give students the benefit of his knowledge and experience.

Malik sahib has gone to a better place but left behind a shining example of how we can all support the

Cause. May Allah give him a place amongst those who pleased Him and may we all learn from Malik

Sahib’s example and everyday devote some time per each day to help the jamaat. (Amin.)
