maris! And great to see your wife Heather join us for your induction. As well as partners Rewa and Shirley, we had past member Vratka join us. She has recently transferred to Longford Rotary Club in Tasmania, where she is living with her sister. Vratka told us about her pro-jects where she aims to help kids in need, both in Cambodia through Peter Gray’s organisation CCASVA and in Tasmania with Ronnie Burns organi-sation (Ronnie is a pop star from way back that some of us may remember) called Appin Hall Children’s Foundation. Vratka gave everyone an update on her hot air balloon-across the nation project, as well as her future project which will be to climb Mt Ever-est with Richard Branson! We wish her luck with her endeavours. Our guest speaker was our fund raising director ex-troardanaire, Susan De Bolfo, who gave her new member’s talk, “Hairstyles through the decades”. It was a delight to hear “Susan’s story”, what an in-credible, if not difficult at times, life she has led. More about Susan’s talk inside In Gear. As usual, there are many things on the go in our club, as we heard at the meeting during directors (and members) reports. Some that were mentioned are: An update from Jim O’Brien on the Mayoral golf day. Jim acknowledged prize contributions as ar-ranged by Richard Jones, Peter Flude and Fred Hof-mann – well done to all members helping Jim out. Heather continues to do a great job with our fellow-ship activities. A big one coming up is the golf week-end at Cape Schank 10th to 12th May Fundraising – we must sell the raffle tickets we have been issued with. If you don’t have yours yet check with Susan. A film night not to be missed is the prem-ier of The Great Gatsby on 30 May – another fund

raising activity so please support this. See Page 6 for details. Trish Smyth, our Membership director has RCOB shirts available for purchase for those members who want to upgrade, or buy one for their partner. Is this a “clearance sale”? Fred Hofmann has many things happening in Interna-tional – see his report inside In Gear Peter Flude asked that we all show our appreciation to James and Megan for all the work they put in to make the Wangaratta conference “the best confer-ence he has ever been to in his 45 years with Rota-ry”. Everyone who was at the conference would whole heartedly agree with Peter. See also my comments above. Because of Easter there will be no meeting this week, but thanks to Roger Frewen, we will be able to enjoy a round of golf at RMGC followed by a BBG on Thursday 28th. The following week, 4th April, we will be back at VGC. Stay safe and have a wonderful week President John

NEWS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SER-VICES TEAM The second part of this Rotary year has seen a con-tinuation of the activities of the International Services Team in different areas: - Funds provided by the Rotary Club of North Bright-on to purchase a new Jackhammer for Pastor Franz have been sent to our friends at Balicamp in Bali who will deliver the tool to Sabu. - $ 13,500.- from an existing RAWCS Account ini-tially destined for the building of a new Students Hostel at Kupang (who's construction has been de-layed indefinitely) has been transferred to Sabu Is-land. There the money will be used for the construc-tion of two houses to accommodate Teachers and children at two different locations on the Island. - In Oct/Nov last year a delegation of 2 Rotarians from North Brighton RC and 4 from our Club trav-elled to Sabu Island. Last Wednesday March 20th a Video presentation about this trip and the work car-ried out by these Rotarians was presented at the North Brighton RC meeting. The Video created and presented by Malcolm Parks was very impressive and provides an excellent impression how much we already have achieved on the Island. In addition Geoffrey Stockdale informed the meeting about his Students Sponsoring program ($ 260 .- supports the living and education costs for one Student)

At he end of the meeting we were given a Cheque of $ 1'700.- as a contribution to the Student Support Program. - Just a few days ago we despatched four Water Purification Filters (called ROTA POTA) by Airfreight to Bali. From there, our friends at the Bal-icamp will take the Filters by Sailing Ship to Sabu. Thanks to the financial support of the Freight Forward-ing Company Fracht AG in Melbourne, the freight costs could be kept at a very low level. The funds to purchase these Water Filters were provided by the Rotary Clubs of Feldbach (Austria) and North Brighton.

DONATION TO MORADABAD SLUMS, IN-DIA Last week President John announced a $1000 dona-tion to District project in India. This extract from the District thank you email gives some more detail. “Firstly let me thank you most sincerely for your Club’s generous support of our NID Ladies and their quest to make a difference in the lives of the slum dwellers in the 60 Moradabad slum villages. We have been in contact with District 3100 and their re-sponse was that they are overwhelmed with our kindness and generosity of spirit, they do not know the Rotarians of District 9810, do they! Through your collective responses we will now have 2 matching grant programs of around $40000 (project cost) with District 3100 and all of your Club donations amounting to $40000 will be matched by $20000 from the Rotary Foundation. This will see, in the remaining 35 slum villages, 2 hand pumps and 4 toilets – not a lot by our standards but really some-thing when you have nothing. Though a matching grant with the Netherlands, District 3100 are able to take care of the first 25 villages.”

Remember tickets are $2 each and the buyer must fill in their name, address and a contact phone num-ber. We have until end May to sell the tickets. Each member is to complete the front page of their books and that front page is to be returned with their books. Please put the money in an envelope with your name on the front and return to Susan or Tony

This Week’s Speaker; Susan De Bolfo Topic; Person Behind the Badge or “ Hair-styles through the Decades” Susan was born on 25 March 1955 the third child of Italian immigrants Igino (Jim) De Bolfo and Armida (Amelia) Masocco. She has an older sister (Joan) and brother (Peter). The De Bolfo family home is in Campitello within view of the Dolomites and only became permanently part of Italy during the 19th Century. The Masocco family home is in San Zan.

The four De Bolfo Brothers immigrated in 1927 and Jim spent his first nine years at Rosebud. Initially clearing the land for the Golf Course. He became an Australian Citi-zen in 1937. He volunteered and joined the Australian Army in1939 and fought in New Guinea. Armida (Amelia) Masocco immigrated in 1947 following the death of her mother in the last Allied bombing raid of the war in Italy.

Susan went to St Patrick’s Mur-rumbeena Primary School and then Sacred Heart Girls’ College Oak-leigh. She loved her sec-ondary school played net-ball and ten-nis and was involved in

school plays and was a prefect in her final year.

She studied at CIT and ob-tained a Degree of Applied Science and then a Diploma of Education at Burwood State College. Susan ma-jored in Remedial Mathe-matics and Mathematics, married and become a Mum.

Christopher Paul De Bolfo was born on 4 December 1976.

Worked at Malvern Girls’ High from 1977 to 1988 covering Mathematics Pure Mathematics Chemistry Remedial Mathematics Computing Mathematics Coordinator Careers Teacher

After completing a Graduate Diploma in Computing – 1986 to 1989 left teaching and joined BP Australia from 1989 to 1996. Initially Joined the IT Depart-ment and worked in a range of roles ending up as Relocation Manager to move 750 staff to Melbourne Central. Highlights of this period – 2nd marriage and when I was retrenched we separated! So the day I left BP I had no job, no house but I had Christopher! In April 1996 I was asked to do a small relocation then after that another one and so The Relocation Company was created to logistically plan, implement and manage your entire relocation.

Invisibility as Art Photograph by Liu Bolin, Eli Klein Fine Art April 2013 China—Invisibility becomes art at a Beijing sawmill in an image from Liu Bolin’s “Hiding in the City” series. For each photograph the artist sports painstakingly painted camouflage. Then assistants position his body so that he disappears from view.
