Global Food Demands Require Continual Agricultural Innovation
To keep up with the demands of a growing population, the agricultural industry continually investigates ways to increase production efficiency and emphasize sustainability and environmental consciousness.
There have been developments in the area of plant nutrition; with fertilizers possessing new or different combinations of plant food analyses, and advancements in the science of formulating fertilizers. More opportunities than ever exist for providing the right amount of the right nutrients at the right place and time.

Recent Innovations: Starter Fertilizer
Starter fertilizer was one of the first steps toward recognizing that nutrients placed close to the developing seedling provide the young plants with easy access to important nutrients at a crucial time in the growth period.
Starter fertilizers take advantage of placement, formulation, and timing to provide developing seedlings with important nutrients when and where they need them.

In-Furrow Starter Fertilizer
Modern liquid formulations that are capable of being placed in the furrow with the seed have opened the door for early access to important macro and micronutrients. Placing these nutrients in with the seed assists with the enzymatic breakdown of seed starches, resulting in quicker access to energy reserves and faster germination and emergence.
Additionally, placement of in-furrow starter fertilizer requires minimal iron or plumbing on the planter versus a traditional 2 x 2 placement.

The Continuing Agricultural Revolution
During the agricultural revolution of the last century, there were significant crop yield improvements due to advancements in farming equipment, fertilizers, pest control products, genetics, and genetic engineering. Over the next century we will continue this revolution, which will require synergies across agricultural arenas.
In-furrow placement of crop inputs fits this strategy by providing excellent placement of nutrients, and a mechanism for other important synergistic crop inputs including fungicides, insecticides, and/or bio-stimulants to provide for optimum seedling protection.

Leaders Of In-Furrow Technology (LIFT)
The Leaders of In-Furrow Technology (LIFT) program gives growers access to an environmentally-friendly and sustainable source of increased nutrient efficiency for more consistent starter fertilizer responses that lead to a higher crop yield.
LIFT, led by West Central Distribution in partnership with BASF Corporation, FMC and Nufarm, educates the agricultural industry about the benefits of an in-furrow application system that includes:• A total program of crop nutrients• Plant health products• Fertilizer compatible insecticides• Customized seed treatments
