The House Mass and Dinners for Year 7 families have begun. We are experiencing a very high response rate for these evenings and it has been a pleasure to speak with so many of the boys in the presence of their families. The badge presentation also gives the students a chance to be formally welcomed into their house.

Mr Ray Condon is to complete his time at Whitefriars this week. Mr Condon has been leading a team who look after our grounds and maintenance. He has been a great servant who has meticulously attended to a host of buildings and grounds initiatives as well as being responsible for so many of our emergency and occupational health procedures. We wish him every blessing for the next stage of his life.

Year 10 Study ProgramOn Wednesday 25 February, Whitefriars College began the Year 10 After School Study Program that operated in the school’s library. This program will continue to run every Wednesday during the school term from 3.30-5pm.

All Year 10 boys are invited to use this program on a Wednesday afternoon to complete homework, to prepare for tests/exams, and to work collaboratively with other students to reinforce key concepts learnt in the Year 10 curriculum.

The After School Study Program aims to provide students with the opportunity to study in a supervised environment that is structured for them to work at their optimum. The purpose of the program is to also further develop their study skills required for their VCE years.

The program will encourage cooperation between students in a collaborative environment which will hopefully lead to better outcomes as leading scholars have found.

“In extensive meta-analyses across hundreds of studies, cooperative arrangements were found superior to either competitive or individualistic structures on a variety of outcome measures, generally showing higher achievement, higher-level reasoning, more frequent generation of new ideas and solutions, and greater transfer of what is learned from one situation to another.” (Barkley, Elizabeth F. et. al. (2005). Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty. San Fransisco: Jossey- Bass).

Students will be required to sign in and sign out when they attend the program. They may leave before 5pm and must find their own form of transport home. If you would like further information about the After School Study Program, please contact me on 9872 8200 or at [email protected]. Mrs Anita Kay-Taylor, Senior Years Coordinator

ACC Swimming 2015 - Swim team wins ‘back to back’ titles

On Friday 20 February, the Whitefriars swimming team competed for the title in the ACC championships at MSAC.

It was a very exciting night with our team displaying an amazing effort to completely blitz the opposition and lead throughout the carnival. After the medley relays had been completed the team had lost only 1 race and set the scene for a sensational carnival.

One of the main highlights was the first race in which Liam Donohue (Year 9) was competing in the Senior 200mts. He was aiming for a na-tional time and only just missed it, but in the process of trying to achieve this, actually won the race. In all the years I have been looking after the team, this has never happened before. He has the opportunity of swimming this race for the next three years and surely will get close to breaking the record.

Speaking of records, our U/15 freestyle relay team (L.Donohue, D.Knight, L.Makarushkin, S.Ma) broke the record that had stood for over ten years. This is an indication of how strong the middle age groups are which goes well for the future.

The junior age groups led by Nathan Tran (U/13) and Nate Te (U/14) performed to a high level winning nearly every race these age groups competed in. Nate was involved in six victories and showed to everyone how talented he is. Others who supported these boys were Joel Trudgeon, Marcus Agnos, James Key and Jack Gurrie.

The upper age groups led by Daniel Te (U/16), Max Warrick (U/17) and Rudi Hunt (Senior) were fantastic all through the carnival. They faced some strong opposition from Mazenod and De La Salle but stuck to the task and contributed to the overall dominant performance by the team.

The margin at the end of the carnival of just on seventy points was the biggest win in over ten years. This was due not only to the swimmers but also to our coach Mr Bob Edwards (Nunawading Swim Club). At the end of last year’s carnival, he identified our weaknesses and devised training around addressing these. The skills displayed by the boys reflected the hard work that Bob had done with them. A big thanks must go to him.

My thanks must also go to Mr Wes Smith who has joined the coaching group and has been a great support to the team with his knowledge and expertise. We have been lucky to have Wes come to our College with a wealth of information. Fr Kierce does a lot of work behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed. He is always there for the boys giving advice and encouragement. I couldn’t do this job if I didn’t have this help.

My senior age led by Rudi Hunt and Jack Young have now completed their time swimming for the team. Finishing after six years with these titles must be very satisfying for them. I always believe that the team comes together if led from the front and the leaders (Rudi and Jack) really lived up to my expectations. They were at training encouraging the juniors and getting the chants happening. Well done on a great season.

Finally, I would like to thank the parents who get their sons’ to the pool for training. As I said at the team function, there would be no team without the parents support. The College really appreciates this.

Next year is a new challenge for us. We will be the hunted by other schools especially after the result this year. The team has an opportunity to extend this run like the early years when we joined the ACC.

Enjoy the title and thanks for the season. Click Here for All the results. Mr Shane Cotter, (Swim Manager)

Environment Group - Happy Clean up Schools DayDid you know that Australia is one of the highest waste producers in the world?  Australia’s love affair of the plastic bag means that if each bag was tied together, the line of plastic bags would go around the Earth 24 times!  Each Australian family contributes enough rubbish each year to fill a three bedroom house from floor to ceiling.

Whitefriars College participated in Clean Up Schools today.  The Environment Group cleaned up the surrounding bushland and creek area during lunchtime.  During Thursday pastoral care group the students were shown a short video on waste (http://www.coolaustralia.org/ca_topic/waste).  It’s about a plastic bags journey from the supermarket trolley to the Pacific Ocean, narrated by David Attenborough.  Students then discussed ways to reduce their waste.  This also could be a point of discussion around the dinner table.  Consider:

1.  A waste free lunch.  Avoid plastic bags or cling wrap where possible.  There are many good alternatives in the shops for a “Nude food”, i.e. no wrappers or waste.

2.  Have a drink bottle, instead of purchasing many plastic bottles.

3.  Recycle paper and cans where possible.

4.  Compost any food scraps.

5.  Celebrate and respect the amazing College environment.

Sustainability was the topic when the Peer Support Soreth students meet with one Year 7 Soreth class last week.  It was a good chance for the students to consider sustainability by individually looking at their carbon footprint and consider the way they live.  An interesting exercise that created much discussion.  The lesson was completed by the group building solar cars and racing them.  Thank you to the Senior Boys for their help and guidance with our junior students.

Ash Wednesday was celebrated last Wednesday.  This period of fasting and sacrifice is upon us and can be completed in various ways.  The Lenten Carbon Fast 2015 Calendar may be of interest to some:  http//www.sosj.org.au/_uploads/_cknw/files/CLRI(NSW)%20Lenten%20Carbon%20Fast%20Calendar%202015.pdf Ms Jo Anne Menzies

VCE Outdoor Education 3/4 Indigenous Resources Trail @ The Royal Botanic Gardens

Connecting to Country On Thursday 19 February, the VCE Outdoor & Environmental Studies students visited the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, a traditionally significant camping and meeting place for the local custodians of the area - Boonerung and Woiwurrung of the Kulin Nation.

The students, as part of the “Connecting to Country” tour, were shown a variety of products native to the area which the indigenous population made use of prior to European settlement.

They explored the sensory quality of some of numerous species of plants used by Aboriginal people for food, medicines, dyes, fibre and fire making. Some ochre-grinding, mixing and painting gave students the opportunity to experience traditional painting methods whilst understanding the significance of communication in Aboriginal culture. They also used indigenous plants such as cumbungi to make a simple 2-ply string.

The highlight however, was the Tanderrum or traditional Wurundjeri “welcome to country” ceremony during which the boys placed eucalyptus leaves on the ceremonial fire.

An informative afternoon was had by all and thanks must go to Ms Alessandra Akers for her assistance with this valuable experience.

Mr Paul Dietzsch, Outdoor Education

The Mathematics Faculty is again running the annual Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition, formally Informatics, in 2015. Selected students from Years7-9 will participate in the CAT Competition on Tuesday 24 March– more details about this to be released shortly.

What is CAT? It is the science underlying computing, communication and the Internet. It is the study of the structure and behaviour of natural and artificial systems that generate, process, store, and communicate information. Students competing in CAT learn the basic algorithms,

data structures and computational techniques that underlie information and communication, and demonstrate the learning through computer programming tasks.

All students in Years 7-9 have been emailed about CAT – should your son be interested in CAT please contact Mrs Liz Moloney (Maths Enrichment) as soon as possible.

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition – CAT 2015

This year WFC will be offering Chess tutorage for interested students in term 1 for Year 7 students. These sessions will be run by our Chess Captain, Joshu Faye-Chauhan, and Mr Bill Teggelove, Chess Convenor. These classes will involve Joshu and Mr Teggelove working with the boys on their general chess play, in particular, basic rules, concepts, plays, strategy and knowledge and skills. These classes will run every Tuesday at lunchtimes in Duncan Centre. Our third session will take place on Tuesday 3 March.

I encourage any student who has an interest in Chess, and more broadly, card game strategy, to get involved in Chess this year. The Chess Club will run sessions every Monday (Undercroft), Tuesday (Duncan Centre) and Thursday (Undercroft) at lunchtimes. I look forward to your involvement in Chess this year.

Chess Programming 2015 - Year 7

Science ClubScience club started with a bang this week with explosive demonstrations and students engaging in fire writing. This involved painting a pattern on paper with Potassium nitrate and touching a glowing wick to the end of the pattern. A trail of glowing sparks then burnt the pattern into the paper. It was good to see new and old students very engaged and enjoying science club.

This week we will have more exciting demonstrations and be making Flubber slime. Science club runs on Friday lunchtime in the Chemistry lab.

More information about science club and other science enrichment activities can be obtained from Dr Goodall ([email protected])

How to get away with becoming a Haemoglobin Hero! - blood donating in 2015

Welcome to Blood Donating 2015!

We go to the Ringwood Donor Centre (opposite Costco and Target). A shuttle bus takes you there and can bring you back to school, usually in time for the afternoon buses, or you can be dismissed from the venue after your donation; it is not far from Ringwood Station and Eastland.

Our regular donation day this year is Thursday period 4 but if you want a different day please see me to organise that, or you can attend any Centre on your own and then email me to say you have done so, so you can be credited.

Most importantly you save an average of 3 lives with each donation (and it doesn’t hurt!) – but you do also get free refreshments afterwards, 50 House points and a great feeling of satisfaction! You will have become a Haemoglobin Hero!

Please note: The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has some restrictions in its youth donation policy:

If you are 18 or over, please read here:

You may donate as before, every 12 weeks

If you are 16 or 17 and are a previous donor, please read here:

You may only donate once during a 12 month period, and this is retrospective. This means that you can donate once in 2015, and it has to be 12 months since your 2014 donation. I have a list of these so if you can’t remember when you last donated, please email me. Once you turn 18 you may donate every 12 weeks.

If you are 16 or 17 and have not donated before please read here:

You may donate once during 2015. Once you turn 18 you may donate every 12 weeks.

Because of these restrictions, it means most students are no longer able to do repeat donations during the year, which reduces the number of donations we can make as a school and the number of lives we can save. We could also only get two time slots for term 1 because there is no shuttle availability on the other dates.

Therefore we need lots of donors, both staff and students! Donation dates for 2015 – all are for Thursday period 4, leaving school at 1.30pm:Term 1 19 March, 26 March

Term 2 16 April, 23 April, 30 April, 7 May, 14 May, 21 May, 28 May Year 12 only, 4 June Year 12 only

Term 3 16 July, 23 July, 30 July, 6 August, 13 August, 20 August, 27 August, 3 September, 10 September

Term 4 8 October, 15 October, 22 October, 29 October

Please consider donating; it doesn’t hurt, and both you and the recipients are left feeling good! Just email me with the date of your choice; groups are welcome but it is fine to come on your own too. You may book for any date in the year; if you book ahead, I will send you a reminder email closer to your date. We only have 7 bookings for each date so get in early!

Any questions? Just email me or ring the Blood Bank on 13 14 95.

Give blood – it’s the gift that keeps on giving!

2015 International Student MentorsInternational Student Mentors and their Mentees Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who will be supporting the new International students during this year.

The International Student Mentoring Program started last year when Year 10s volunteered to become mentors and participate in a one hour training session on the last day of school. During the training session the soon to be mentors were informed where all the International Students have come from and what their role as International Student Mentors will be.

Adrian Busacca I started the Program when I met all the new International Students during a get together period. I was assigned my partner alongside my fellow mentors. I met Ben and we talked about our backgrounds, our interests and many other facets of our lives. After we had gotten to know each other and had become friends, we went outside with everyone and we took some photos in the Reflective Garden. We met again during a celebration meeting where all the International Student mentors were given their badges and congratulated by Mr Finn, Mr Bird, Mrs Fields and all the International Students. Being part of this program has given me an insight into the lives of every International Student and I am thankful that I have been given the ability to share in their schooling experience.

Benjamin Lee I am a new International Student this year and my name is Benjamin Lee from Hong Kong. I am in Year 10, class L3. I am new to this school so I felt a bit nervous after Mrs Fields mentioned that we needed to meet some ‘buddies’. When I met Adrian, we talked a lot about our hobbies, favourite subjects and food. I found out that Adrian is a talkative and gentle person so we become friends after the buddies meeting. When all the international students met in the functions room and had a little celebration with Mr Finn, Mr Bird and Mrs Fields. I was really pleased, because I had never thought I could celebrate the Luna New Year in Australia. I felt very lucky that I am part of this program.

We wish the mentors and mentees a very enjoyable year.

The Year 7 English classes have now spent some time in the Library as part of the Wider Reading Program. Many of the students have borrowed books and kindles or downloaded titles through the Wheelers electronic lending facility. All students are reminded to check the library blog for suggestions and reviews. They are encouraged to submit their own reviews to be included in the blog – students enjoy hearing from their peers. On the Library page are some fantastic websites that are written by teenagers for teenagers. These blogs are a great reference tool when wanting to know what to read or to find out who else writes like their favourite author. Read more about these blogs here.

Some new fiction titles to our collection: The Teacher Librarians will continue to regularly meet with the English classes throughout the year to assist the students with their reading selections and alert them to what is new. The Premier’s Reading Challenge will be launched soon and all Year 7s will be taking part in this program. More information will follow.

Big Band Sunsets Festival The 21 February was a scorching hot day, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Stage Band as they performed once again at the annual Big Band Sunset Festival held at Hazel Pearce Park in Mordialloc. The crowd of jazz enthusiasts were very encouraging, applauding strongly and several people got up to dance which is always a good sign at a jazz gig. The performance by the Stage Band was excellent, particularly considering the short time frame for rehearsal and preparation. All credit goes to the boys in the Stage Band and their Director, Mr Stuart Collidge who have worked hard to produce a result of which the school can be proud.

Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School fete Rock Bands Wednesday LTs and The Contenders played to the visitors at the above fete last Saturday.

As always their performance was outstanding and well received and we thank the boys along with Mr Stuart Collidge for their musicianship and willingness to dedicate some of their weekend.

Instrumental Music A reminder to parents that Instrumental lessons have commenced for the year. Most of these lessons are significantly discounted for Years 7 and 8 to encourage students to try an instrument, develop a new skill and enhance their academic prowess.

For details contact Sandra Kennedy [email protected]

House Music Festival Preparations are underway for the annual House Music festivities. House Captains met with the organisers this week and all houses are expected to field entrants in all three categories – Group Performance, Solo Performance and Lipsynch. We are very excited to see what each of the houses can produce and we encourage students to contact their House Captain and have a go.

Upcoming Events

6-13 March – House Music Festival

15 March – St. Anne’s Strawberry Fair

25-26 March – Believe In Music concerts.

Sports Report Mr Gavin KellarFaculty Head - Sport

“Whitefriars have done it again! Back to back champions in the pool at the ACC Swimming Carnival on Friday 20 February. The boys had been training early hours on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings for term 4 of 2014 and since the start of term 1 in 2015 and through the results it’s obvious that these hard hours in the pool have really paid off!

Kicking off the night Whitefriars won the first 5 events which not only sparked the cheer squad but also ignited the swimmers to swim to their maximum ability with the goal of bringing home the title again. Special mention to Liam Donohue, who is a Year 9 student, who won the senior 200 freestyle. A great effort. Liam is just one boy who shows significant promise for the swim team in the future!

The Friars boys continued on their way to win the first 6 individual events of the nights also, which makes me draw attention to just how good our junior age group (under 13s) were on the night! They dazzled the rest of the squad with their amazing ability to win race after race, only finishing out of the top 3 on one occasion, with 6 wins, one second one third and one fourth! Congratulations boys on your year level achievement. To win so convincingly like that within an age group is something that you should all be very proud of! The success of the Under 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s and seniors finishing on the podium strengthened the team overall.

Special mentions to the senior boys who came out to support us. You guys did an amazing job egging on the boys and making them compete at their very best, and according to many parents on the night it was “the best cheer squad we’ve ever had” so thank you!!

Collectively as a group I’d like to thank all the boys for a great seasons swimming and I hope that Whitefriars will continue on their winning ways well into the future!” Rudi Hunt, Swimming Captain 2015

“The ACC Volleyball squad travelled out to St Bedes College in Mentone for Round 4 of the senior volleyball season. The division 1 side started off well looking for back to back wins but the competitive St Bedes did very well to continue to scrap points and stay in the game. Through some immaculate hitting, Whitefriars College were able to take out the first set, but to the credit of St Bedes they were able to win the second set and level the game one set all. In a topsy-turvy affair with the consistent pressure of St Bedes, Whitefriars were able to take the next two sets, with both games going down to the wire.

The division two side played particularly well in all facets of the game convincingly defeating St Bedes 3 sets to 0. Some excellent team play and powerful hits were the reason behind a fantastic win. Both games were played in great spirits showing great sportsmanship, your dedication and demeanor is a true representation of the ‘Gentle-Men’ at Whitefriars College.” Riley Fyffe, Volleyball Captain 2015

In Fide Newsletter Issue 3 27 February 2015

Good Sport NominationsEach week we have many students who excel in Sport, whether it is in ACC Sport or Non-ACC Sport. Each week staff members are asked to nominate students who have demonstrated excellence via their performances, participation, sportsmanship, cooperation and teamwork. The following students have been nominated as Good Sports for this week:

Year 11: Ben Roughsedge Seamus Bolton

Year 12: Rudi Hunt Frank Anderson Karim Faltas Jack Young Ryan Young Nicholas Florio Tom Knapper Nathaniel I’Anson Sam Weideman Joseph Primerano Jaye Witnish Evan Smeed

For ACC Fixtures I have included the venue and the Estimated Return Time (ERT) to Whitefriars to assist parents collecting students.

“On Wednesday the 25 February, the top senior Whitefriars tennis squad took on 2nd place St Bedes in what would prove to be a crucial game for the season. Coming into the game off a loss to Mazenod last week, the boys were highly motivated and keen to bounce back from last week’s game.

A great display of tennis from the boys saw Whitefriars defeat a strong St Bedes outfit 9 sets to 3. Huge credit must go out to the boys for fighting for each point throughout the day to seal the wins, with some games going down to the wire. Tom Jacotine, in his 2nd consecutive game going the distance, reversed the score line from last week recording a 9-7 win, in gutsy come from behind win.

The singles scores were as follows:

1. Mike Chen - 8-3 2. Riley Tubbs - 5-8 3. Joseph Bisignano - 6-8 4. Tom Jacotine - 9-7 5. Marcus Young - 8-2 6. Josh Butler - 8-3 7. Mike Holland - 8-6 8. Nick Soon - 2-8 In doubles, teamwork was on display at its finest with all 4 doubles partnerships recording solid victories.

On top of this great result, we now sit 2nd on the ladder chasing down Mazenod for bragging rights of top spot.

Next week, we will look to continue our fine form against Emmanuel College to set ourselves up in a great position for the upcoming finals series.” Joseph Bisignano, Tennis Captain 2015
