It is an honour to serve this District as your Governor for the next 12 months and I would like to remind you that your District Team is here to assist and support you as we start a new Rotary Year.

I would like to thank all those Rotarians who will continue as officers within their respective clubs, and those who are taking on the role for the very first time. I am conscious that clubs could not function without their commitment and dedication. On behalf of Rotary I thank you for being part of the support team.

I believe that we have an exciting time ahead, with membership and public image being a priority I will be working closely with Ian Elliott and Ray Burman so that I am kept up to date on how these two initiatives are progressing. There are many challenges ahead but with the assistance of the dedicated 17/18 District Support team I am confident that we can build our membership and address our core values and continue to undertake humanity projects in the name of Rotary. I have already had the pleasure of visiting several clubs, giving me the opportunity to experience at first hand the projects that the clubs are involved with both at home and abroad. I note your concerns for the future and acknowledge that we must embrace change and constantly review how we function so that we appeal to prospective new members.

At the District Assembly in April I set out my aims and aspirations for this new

Rotary Year and with your support I am confident that we

can ‘Make a Difference’ which is in line with RI President Ian Riseley’s. Ian is keen to get involved with environmental issues and has challenged every Rotarian throughout the world to plant a tree between 1 July 2017 to 22 April 2018. RIBI are adding a further dimension to this initiative and you can read more by going to page 5.

If your clubs would like to get involved and you would like some expert advice then please contact the District

Environment Officer Keith Tovey email [email protected]

I am very keen for members to get involved in Resilience Support within their local Communities. Rotarians in the East of this District have already undertaken training to assist in Rest Centre when local emergencies occur.

Such forward thinking has been recognised by RIBI and I have been asked to be part of a Review Panel looking at a Rotary Strategy in relation to our contribution to community emergency support. It is envisaged that Rotarians would be ‘Third Responders’ and we will also be examining how we can effectively manage donations and the distribution of funds within the recovery stage. We must never be complacent and as highlighted at the recent events in London we could make a contribution and be prepared to give assistance when such events occur.

We live and work in our local communities and for this reason I believe that we have much to offer. I am confident that your District Emergency Planning Officer would be more than happy to guide you through the process and would welcome your support. I will naturally keep the membership updated on this RIBI initiative,

I believe that we are more effective working in partnership with other clubs and other organisations. We can gather ideas whilst at the same time promoting the fantastic work that we undertake in the name of Rotary.

May I wish you all the very best in the coming months and with great fellowship and a sense of purpose I believe that as an organisation, we have a bright future in Rotary.

Rodney Accepts RIBI InvitationI am delighted to inform this District that Rodney Howell (RC of Diss Waveney) has been asked to write the occasional article for the RIBI Magazine.

David King the Managing Editor for the RIBI newsletter approached Rodney and I was pleased to be able to give him my full support.

I am sure that he will continue to create some interesting articles which will be very informative and incorporating an element of his wit and humour.

The Publicity Cup was awarded to the Framingham Rotary Club for their contribution in promoting all areas of publicity both internally and externally.

During 2016-17, the District ComVoc Committee under the chairmanship of PDG Nick Corke, initiated the new Community Service Champion Award for Rotarians. It was also agreed that all champions in each year would be put forward for the Community Champion Shield to be presented at the District Handover.

The first award was made to David Pallant of the Rotary Club of Norwich who, over more than 10 years, steered the work of the Club in its numerous Community Service activities. This was presented by Nick Corke at the Club’s Austerity Lunch in May, but sadly David died just a few hours later. District unanimously agreed that the Community Service Shield should be called “The David Pallant Memorial Shield”. This was duly presented to his widow, Lynn at District Handover when she was accompanied by their two sons who joined her on the Podium.

Our culture is becoming busier, with reduced job security encouraging people to accept more demanding work schedules, our leisure time is becoming more and more scarce.

We need a new imagination, a new approach to how we retain and attract people into our Rotary Clubs.

All membership data across the Rotary world shows the best way to grow a Rotary Club is to grow the members. When existing members grow in confidence, in skills, in depth of Rotary knowledge, their excitement for Rotary tumbles out and naturally draws others in. A club which is member focused and is excited to grow, will be more attractive to non-Rotarians rather than a club that is focused on numerical growth for the sake of numerical growth.

Developing members into full Rotary membership, seeing involvement as a vocation, a way of life, not just a matter of attendance. In this way people are more likely to join Rotary, because they see something they like, something they will enjoy and more importantly, having understood the organisation they are joining, they are more likely to stay. Unless existing Rotarians are committed and feel themselves growing and fulfilled in their local club, they will not be at their best to “tell and sell” Rotary and bring new people into our organisation. We will be working with clubs to encourage them to consider adopting the simple philosophy of MGM - Member Gets Member.

Over recent years, Rotary has produced advertising and marketing materials, documents, pamphlets, considerable resources for membership and recruitment; yet the paradox is that despite all this energy going into creating and promoting recruitment resources, our numbers continue to fall.

It has been my experience in over 20 years at local, national and international levels of Rotary, that people are drawn to joining our movement when they meet existing motivated Rotarians and through attending club meetings they get to know and understand Rotary, becoming part of the club and by membership, fully understand Service Above Self. Joining Rotary offers a way of life, a series of values, a world-view of giving service and vocation and this individual development is best done one-to-one in an intentional mentoring friendship. The concept of a mentor or coach is not new.

Against a backdrop of ever decreasing membership in our clubs, it is the responsibility of every Rotarian in District 1080 to examine how they can strengthen and grow their Rotary club. The ‘Member Gets Member’ strategy is not only key to developing long standing and committed Rotarians in District 1080, it is increasingly important in supporting those who are attracted to joining Rotary, but are hesitant in taking those first steps. We should be aware that there are often stumbling blocks that people need to overcome before joining Rotary. It is a friendly introduction and follow-up invitation that are often the decisive factors whether someone will join Rotary; in our changing culture, a one-to-one relationship is essential alongside offering membership to a club.

Accolade for Norwich District 1080 RotarianDistrict Environment Officer, Keith Tovey of the Rotary Club of Norwich, has recently been elected as a Director of the newly formed Environmental and Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) which was formally launched at the recent Atlanta Convention.

Keith was elected as one of seven Directors from a number of candidates who were nominated from many Districts across the world and a shortlist of 19.

His co-directors are: Jean Billingsley (RIBI) District 1285, Pauline Amez-Droz (9455, Australia), Pat Armstrong (9810, Australia), John Lawrence (6380, Canada), Kenneth Wycliffe Mugisha (9211, Uganda), John Wesson (9400, South Africa).

In the election, all candidates were asked to produce a short resume of what they saw their role was during their term of office. Keith’s election vision was as follows:

“Rotary should take the lead to move towards a holistic, Sustainable Environmental future for instance in Energy, we should a) minimise use, b) encourage effective management to assess trends, c) improve efficiency of appliances, d) exploit renewable energy initiatives and e) offset remaining emissions.

Equally in recycling we should a) minimise waste, b) encourage reuse before c) recycling and only then d) use waste disposal. Four years ago I instigated District Bronze, Silver, and Gold Environment Awards in District 1080 and wish to see similar schemes elsewhere. I am also developing a Club Carbon Footprint Calculator to track performance.”

The first meeting of the Board as a video conference is scheduled for the middle of next month. It should be interesting as Board members and Officers span 15 time zones! Keith will provide regular updates on the activities and decisions made by the Board.

Clubs will be aware of the District Environment Awards and 20 such presentations have been made to Clubs. Keith is also impressed by the large variety of Environmental Projects carried out by Clubs ranging from energy conservation/carbon reduction and recycling to litter picking and enhancement of the local environment by local planting and maintenance. In the last few years, no fewer than 48 Clubs in 1080 have undertaken a total of 111 environmental projects of which 99 are still current and active. This is an excellent achievement, but Keith is aware that other projects have been completed but so far not recorded.

If your club wishes to learn more about the Awards, ESRAG, or ideas on projects for your Club, please contact Keith at [email protected]

WIN £250FOR YOUR CLUB

RI President Ian Risely has challenged every Rotarian throughout the world to plant a tree between 1 July 2017 and 22 April 2018.

If successful that would mean 1,200,00 new trees being planted to reduce the worlds carbon emissions.

RIBI is adding a further dimension to that challenge through the generosity of the Rodney Huggins Family Trust by offering a special one off award of £250 to the Club who best carries out this task.

Entries for this will need to be sent to Rodney Huggins on [email protected] by 30 April 2018 including:

• Photographic Evidence of the planting

• The location(s) of the trees including OS Grid Reference(s)

• The Club(s) involved

• The number and ages of the people involved

• The types of tree planted

• The size of the trees planted

• The number of trees planted

• The date(s) when the planting has been completed.

• Plans for the subsequent maintenance of the trees

Other criteria which may be considered in the assessment will include the originality of any tree planting scheme that has been carried out and its context to the local environment and landscape.

District Environment Officer, Keith Tovey [email protected] will be overseeing activities in District 1080 and is happy to give advice on the challenge.

He is also able to visit the Club(s) and the area planted to endorse the submission to the Challenge.

What is Rotary? That is a question that many of us have probably been asked when we tell people that we are a Rotarian.

It’s not just a question that’s asked in East Anglia but is asked all over the world! To help gain better recognition Rotary International has updated our branding. The word “Rotary” has been included in our logo beside the roundel that we all know so well (but that is not so well understood by others). If anyone has any questions about this or needs help with incorporating the new branding into their club materials please contact me.

Alongside national RIBI Public Image initiatives, we will be working with local TV, Radio and the Press to increase awareness of the amazing work that Rotary does both here in East Anglia and also around the world. We will also be developing our social media and website activities to ensure that the message reaches the widest possible audience. To assist and encourage clubs with their own public image activities, workshops are being organised local to you.

Membership is the single biggest issue throughout Rotary at the moment, and all our Public Image programmes will be focused on helping the recruitment and retention process. This year our district Membership and Public Image teams will be working hand-in-hand and details of the initial joint workshops will be announced later this month. Following an overwhelming response at the District Assembly, individual club sessions have already been arranged.

Communication between our clubs is essential to help us all keep up to date with all the marvellous work we do. Therefore, in the coming months we will be enhancing and developing our district communication tools and will be encouraging and helping everyone to use them to the best effect.

The year ahead will be a challenging one, but by working together to make Rotary “a secret no more” it can be an exciting and rewarding one.

Bollywood NightsThis was the theme for a very successful and colourful event held by the Rotary Club of Gorleston on Sea on 10 June.

With a demonstration of Indian dancing provided by the ‘Bollywood Sparkles’ dancers, a delicious 3 course Indian meal and beautiful costumes, over 110 guests had an exciting evening which culminated with energetic dancing for all.

The International Committee organised the evening to raise funds to buy Water Survival Boxes and the final total approaching £1500 will enable the club to purchase 10 boxes - a great

result. This exotic event was held at the Royal Assembly Rooms, Great Yarmouth.

The tone was set by the red carpet entrance and welcome by Rotarian Sunder Gopaul, followed by photographs which miraculously became a scene with the Taj Mahal as the background. With such enjoyable entertainment and dinner, the evening came to an end, all too soon.

Rural Activities for Norwich School ChildrenIn late May, Rotarians from the Wroxham Bure Valley Club hosted two days of rural activities for children from the Mile Cross School in Norwich.

On the first day, a group were taken out sailing on Wroxham Broad with the help of members of the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, followed by a farm visit to Willow Farm, Hickling and a barbecue. On the second day, a second group spent the day at the Barton Turf Activity Centre.

The services group, Norse generously sponsored transport and packed lunches and the day was a real experience of life outside of the city.

“This year we had great weather and the children had a fantastic time. What makes it all really worth-while is the laughter and happiness and the unsolicited thanks at the end of the day before they get on the coach back to Norwich”, said WBV Press Officer, Peter Milsted.

A Truly Wonderful PartnershipFor many years the Rotary Club of King's Lynn has supported Guide Dogs for the Blind and gets regular updates on the dogs the Club has adopted.

The latest being ‘Goldie’, a golden Labrador currently undergoing final training with her specialised handler Emma, who says that ‘Goldie’ is almost ready to be matched with her new owner.

At a regular meeting of the Club on 5 June 2017, Victoria Framingham was a guest with her guide dog named ‘Parker’.’ Victoria who has been blind since birth applied for a guide dog when she was 16 years old and talked about the training programme that both she and Parker received, before he was actually handed over. He has become an essential part of her everyday life and can only be described as her “best friend”.

With Parker at her side, Victoria was able to enjoy an independence previously denied to her, as a result of which she was able to attend College and trained for and became a fully qualified massage therapist with the King's Lynn Football Club as one of her chief clients.

The Club members who were entranced by Victoria and Parker, asked a great many questions concerning her past experience and future plans, which Victoria answered with confidence and humour.

Rotary Club President Michael Pellizzaro presented Victoria with a cheque for £1250 to the Guide Dogs Charity and wished her every success in her career and life ahead.

Bury Abbey Award EveningBury Abbey Rotary Club, having raised £17.000 for charity last year, hosted it annuals awards evening for the presentation of funds to the club’s chosen charities.

These awards include President Pete Summer’s Charities. Headway Suffolk, and Prostate Cancer UK both received £2500 in support of their work in Suffolk. We were lucky to be joined by Alan Moore and Gayle Fogg-Elliot from Headway Suffolk to collect their cheque and to tell the club of their work in Suffolk.

Local charities in Bury were also supported in the recognition of the hard work these groups do in support of Bury St. Edmunds. The charities including Bright Stars, Bury Drop in Centre, Rougham Control Tower, Westley Middle School and Suffolk Young Carers. We were again able to support Rotary charities including Rotary Foundation, Shelterbox and Stowmarket & Gipping Rotary Clubs smoke alarm projects. This year we presented £500 to Rotaract Bury St. Edmunds for their support of our events for their charity account.

After the charity presentation, Geoffrey Probert High Sherriff of Suffolk spoke of his admiration of work of Bury Abbey Rotary in supporting local charities in our awards. He also told us of his campaign to encourage people to leave legacies to charities in Suffolk, taking advantage of the new tax laws.

A PAD works automatically and is designed to be used by anybody in an emergency before the emergency services can arrive on the scene. It can provide CPR as quickly as possible after a heart attack and can save lives.

To fund this, the idea of a sponsored cycle ride sprang from a challenge in 2016 when Rotarian Andy Holford and two friends cycled 150 miles coast to coast from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, raising £900 for "End Polio Now" .

This new venture to cycle around the boundary of Norfolk - some 220 miles in 4 days is, in itself, a challenge for those that accompanied Andy, there may not be so many hills, but despite some serious training over the past six months they are not such experienced cyclists as Andy and Wally.

The ride was on 22 June at the Rathskeller, on the South Quay, King's Lynn and ended there on 25 June.

At various stages along the way, other cyclists joined in, all with the idea of raising as much money as possible.

Blood Pressure Testing at Diss

CyclathonTo take part in the cycle rides that formed part of the Diss Cyclathon on Sunday 25 June entrants needed to be fairly fit.

To help check their condition, members of the Diss Waveney Rotary Club set up a stand near the finish area to determine the blood pressures of both riders and members of the general public.

The facility, organised by retired GP Patricia Mordey and staffed by club members, retired nurses and East of England Ambulance volunteers, was open from 10am to 2pm and tested almost 200 people in that time. Most people were found to be within acceptable levels but one person was advised to contact their GP as soon as possible for further examination.

Diss Town Mayor Trevor Wenman is pictured undergoing a check to see whether the strains of office have had any effect.

Diss Waveney Rotary President, Janet Turner commented: “This effort by club members forms part of the club’s main aims, which are to assist community health and the education of our children”.
