Getting Back to the Classroom: The Role of Data Analytics

Main Stage | COVID Response & Recovery - Concordia Action Alliance September 21, 2020 (Monday) at 14:35 ET Session Length:  20 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: SAS Program Partner: Concordia Action Alliance (in text on spot me only) Session Description The quick spread of COVID-19, exacerbated as schools and universities around the world re-open their doors, has highlighted the need for innovative solutions to bolster contact tracing efforts. Contact tracing allows public health officials to track and identify individuals who may have come into contact with an infected person, and has historically been an extremely time- and resource-consuming process. However, advances in data visualization and analytics have allowed companies to collect more comprehensive data from multiple sources and generate more valuable insights, while also empowering policy makers to be more effective decision makers. As many universities adopt a hybrid teaching model to accommodate students requiring in-person access to certain university facilities and lectures, and with the risk for COVID infection on campus remaining present, contract tracing becomes a lifeline for university officials, faculties, and students alike. This panel will explore the role of data analytics and digital privacy rights in helping global universities balance academic obligations and student welfare. Regional Response & Economic Recovery: Americas

Strategic Dialogue | COVID Response & Recovery - Concordia Action Alliance September 21, 2020 (Monday) at 15:45 ET Session Length:  75 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: (None) Session Description This Strategic Dialogue will elevate voices from different sectors in the region to talk about the most pressing needs during this pandemic and plan next-step policies around economic resilience to help businesses shift their models into the new economic landscape, in which cross-sector partnerships are essential to tackling this social and economic emergency. Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the economy in Latin America has been severely affected by the long-lasting lockdowns, reduction of trade, and decrease in foreign investment, among other major factors. This crisis will end up being the worst recession in the region’s history and will only exacerbate the issues that existed before the pandemic. Within this context, businesses and entrepreneurs are struggling to continue their operations and remain financially stable. With the near future so uncertain, foreign investment is increasingly risky and the support that entrepreneurs need is more diffuse, forcing them to reinvent themselves and find new channels of engagement with their clients. As unemployment rates are increasing every day and businesses are closing their operations due to financial struggles, a roadmap to pursue an economic recovery is needed more than ever before.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Status: Accept | David Smolansky, OAS Secretary General Envoy for Venezuelan Migration and Refugee Crisis, Organization of American States Status: Accept | Francis Suarez, Mayor, City of Miami Status: Accept | Juan Carlos Pinzón, President, ProBogotá; Former Ambassador of Colombia before the United States; Former Minister of Defense of Colombia, ProBogotá Status: Accept | Laura Chinchilla, Vice President, WORLD LEADERSHIP ALLIANCE - CLUB DE MADRID Status: Accept | Luc Lapointe, CEO & Founder, TheBC.lab Status: Accept | Nicolas Uribe Rueda, Executive President, Bogotá Chamber of Commerce

Patron Member Roundtable: Talent and Opportunity: How to Find and Support This Generation's "Lost Einsteins"

Patron Member Roundtable | COVID Response & Recovery - Concordia Action Alliance September 21, 2020 (Monday) at 16:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Schmidt Futures Session Description Humanity benefits when talented people have the opportunity to fully develop and deploy their skills. Yet though talent is evenly distributed across geographies and communities, those opportunities are not. Many of the world’s most talented people are under-utilized for public benefit because three critical failure points:  • Discovery: They go undiscovered as youth due to failure to thrive in existing systems or lack of access to talent assessment  • Development: They are inefficiently matched to academic and personal opportunities to develop their talent • Direction: Opportunities to apply their talent for the public benefit are limited, hard to find, and come with financial and career trade-offs. This roundtable will bring leaders from across sectors together to discuss how we can better identify and support talent, particularly when it comes from marginalized or overlooked backgrounds. The discussion will connect to the launch of Rise, an initiative of Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust, which aims to build a network of talented young people around the world and support them as they serve others throughout their lives. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.   Speakers: Status: Accept | James Savage, Senior Manage of Data Science, Schmidt Futures

Patron Member Roundtable: Building Forward Better: Closer Sector Collaboration to Build a More Resilient Future

Patron Member Roundtable | Global Finance & Trade September 21, 2020 (Monday) at 16:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Freeport-McMoRan and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) Session Description The immense and fluid nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has quickly exposed that there is not necessarily a linear path from one phase of response to another nor a clear line between short- and longer-term responses. Further, opportunities for collaboration have never been more important in order to truly build forward better.  This roundtable discussion will introduce a just launched “Building Forward Better Framework” developed by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Business Fights Poverty and The Partnering Initiative, in consultation with the Harvard Kennedy School’s Corporate Responsibility Initiative. This Framework for action provides practical tools and resources for use by the mining industry and a range of other sectors to help guide them through the initial stages of the pandemic and to lay the pathway for building forward to a more resilient future post COVID-19.   The session will seek to explore the Framework as a practical tool for companies to assess their own activities through the examples, case-studies and resources across three key areas for action – Lives (health and safety), Livelihoods (jobs and income) and Learning (education and skills). Through these lenses, companies can identify practical actions to take across their core business activities, community investment programs and policy engagement, that support community rebuilding and resilience. The Framework was also designed to provide a focal point for discussing collaboration that might scale responses that can best address current and future social and economic challenges. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.  Speakers:

The Power of Social Impact Investments for a Sustainable Future

Main Stage | Global Finance & Trade September 22, 2020 (Tuesday) at 09:00 ET Session Length:  20 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Global Citizen Forum Session Description When nations open their doors to social impact investment programs, they are not only facilitating growth of their economy and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), but they are giving their people the opportunity to contribute to building a more prosperous and sustainable future. Consequentially, investors around the world are becoming more and more optimistic about opting for global freedom and access because of the social impact that their investment has both within the community and globally. While the role of foreign direct investment is critical for all developing economies, the need to attract FDI takes on unique importance for smaller countries due to the size and structure of their economies. This session will further explore the dynamics of smaller economies that rely heavily on FDI and tourism for economic growth and how the COVID-19 pandemic signaled a renewed imperative for the international community to explore a wide range of impact investment tools and financing solutions to sustain social impact in these communities, and how their leaders look toward new avenues for socio-economic prosperity. Shaping our Global Future: Digital Cooperation for SDG Impact

Main Stage | Global Finance & Trade September 22, 2020 (Tuesday) at 09:50 ET Session Length:  25 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: The Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL)  Session Description The digital development ecosystem has great potential but is not achieving the impact it needs, with fragmented funding, duplication of efforts, and a failure to leverage economies of scale and shared infrastructure across sectors. Governments recognize the benefits of a whole-of-government approach, and technology service providers are clear that sector-agnostic applications can reduce the overall cost and complexity of digital transformation. Digital donors have a key role to play in shaping digital development investments, markets, and innovations. Cooperation among donors, thematic sectors, and the private sector, through the lens of inclusion and justice, is critical. This panel will look at these issues in depth, touching on case studies and examples to bring to life a vision of cooperation for increased impact. Healthy People, Healthy Markets: Strategic Public Private Partnership Delivering Results

Main Stage | Equality, Equity & Human Rights September 22, 2020 (Tuesday) at 14:00 ET Session Length:  20 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: (None) Session Description When women and girls are empowered with agency, access to resources, information and services, and the ability to participate in charting their own course, there are benefits not only to the woman, but also to her family and society. The Case for a Gendered Response to COVID-19

Main Stage | Equality, Equity & Human Rights September 22, 2020 (Tuesday) at 14:20 ET Session Length:  25 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: CARE USA, Colgate-Palmolive, PepsiCo Session Description COVID-19 is deeply affecting communities worldwide, while also intensifying existing challenges. COVID-19 and its impacts have amplified social, economic, political, and historical inequalities, both domestically and internationally, especially for communities that already suffered from poverty and discrimination. While COVID-19 affects everyone, it is not equally so. Women and girls face unique challenges, such as the burden of caring for the sick and out-of-school children, higher risk of infection, and susceptibility to the economic impact of COVID-19. Research shows that women themselves are reporting more, deeper, and longer-lasting impacts from COVID-19 than men are, especially around livelihoods, food and access to services. Almost every country and context is reporting rises in gender based violence. Without accounting for the differing experiences of women, and especially women in BIPOC communities in the US, an effective response would not be possible. This pandemic is a global challenge, and our response must include efforts to safeguard vulnerable populations around the world. How do we ensure that women are not forgotten in relief efforts? This plenary will bring together diverse stakeholders, including those from the private sector and the NGO community. We will dig deeper into why we must ensure that decision-making bodies are gender-balanced and inclusive, and steps all actors can take to address the problem. CARE will unveil new research that shows women’s experiences and priorities in their own voices across 40 countries, and their priorities for responding to COVID-19.” Indeed, the intersection of COVID-19 and gender should be considered in every step of response and recovery. Community Discussion: Recentering Voices: The Importance of New Ideas and New Leaders for the Future of our Democracy

Community Discussion | Equality, Equity & Human Rights September 22, 2020 (Tuesday) at 16:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: New Leaders Council  Session Description We know that those closest to the problem are closest to the solution. But for far too long, participation at the highest levels of our democracy have all looked the same. Whether through the lens of gender, race, age or profession, our decision makers have been fairly homogenous. But for our democracy to thrive and for our communities to be able to serve all of their citizens, we need new leadership with unique perspectives, backgrounds, and knowledge sets; leaders who are more representative of the country and our communities.   Led by New Leaders Council, the nation’s largest training organization for Millennial cross-sector leaders, this discussion will explore the need for diversity of identity, industry, and issue areas to find long-lasting solutions that improve our communities, our country and the world.  Speakers: (None)

Patron Member Roundtable: The New Normal: (Re)building Healthcare Systems

Patron Member Roundtable | Sports, Arts, & Education: Levers of Growth & Diplomacy September 23, 2020 (Wednesday) at 08:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Women Political Leaders Session Description The ongoing global pandemic has not only changed our collective economic, social and political systems in permanent ways, but has inadvertently highlighted the defining issue undermining global health infrastructure: inequality. Women represent 70% of the global health workforce, spearheading the fight against COVID-19 on multiple levels and frontlines - yet women make up only only 25% of global health leadership, and 13% of the healthcare sector’s C-suite. In addition to undermining gender parity and equality, the lack of women in these decision-making structures weakens the effectiveness of public health systems, undermines global progress towards UHC, and cheats the global health sector from female talent, ideas and expertise. The role and status of women amid a global pandemic is critical on multiple fronts - as doctors, nurses, caregivers, policymakers, and first responders - women are making crucial initial decisions in COVID-19 response and global health systems, and they must be empowered and protected accordingly. Increasing the number of female leaders, in both politics and healthcare systems/industries, is an essential component of strengthening global health and crisis resilience. If given a seat at the decision-making table, women globally will be a force for not just pandemic response and recovery, but stronger health preparedness, resilience, and coverage in the future. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Toyin Ojora Saraki, Founder-President, The Wellbeing Foundation Africa

Patron Member Roundtable: Young People as Problem Solvers Not Makers: Youth Leading Global Responses to Covid-19 and Beyond

Patron Member Roundtable | Sports, Arts, & Education: Levers of Growth & Diplomacy September 23, 2020 (Wednesday) at 08:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: World YMCA Session Description It took several months for Covid-19 to be seen as a threat to the physical, emotional and economic wellbeing of young people (traditionally those aged 15-24). 1 in 6 young people globally have become unemployed since the beginning of the pandemic; loneliness and uncertainty have unleashed a wave of mental health issues for young people; nearly 90% of the student population have been affected by school closures.  Young people are consistently overlooked: their challenges are easily relegated behind those of the very young and the fully adult; and the ways they meet society’s challenges are largely unseen and unappreciated. As well as playing a key role in Covid response, they are leading global charges to address three great divides fracturing society: the divides between self and climate (they are the loudest campaigners to address climate change); between self and society (they are the loudest campaigners against racial and other forms of injustice and inequality); and between self and self (they are some of the loudest advocates of developing a spiritual nature to inform a societal nature).  This roundtable will discuss how to bring young people centre stage in policy-making, and human and financial investment. It will share experience on young people as problem-solvers and as dynamic agents of social change. Its outcomes can inform advocacy and action the world over. In seeking to change attitudes towards young people and empowering them to bring about change for the better, the World YMCA will introduce its own findings, focusing on the good news about young people. Others are invited to follow suit. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.  Speakers: Status: Accept | DJ Forza, Director of Partnerships & Collaboration, World YMCA

Coming Together in a Post-COVID World: The Power of Technology in Refugee Education

Main Stage | Sports, Arts, & Education: Levers of Growth & Diplomacy September 23, 2020 (Wednesday) at 10:05 ET Session Length:  25 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: UNHCR, Microsoft, Vodafone Foundation & Foreign Policy Session Description The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly underscored the importance of technology and connectivity in today’s world but has also revealed the disparities in access to those benefits, and the damaging impact those disparities can have in the area of education. COVID-19 has exposed the fault lines which will need to be addressed if SDG4 (Quality Education) is to be realized. This session will explore how COVID-19 has affected the delivery of programmes aimed at ensuring access to education for displaced children and youth, the role of private sector partnerships focused on connected education, and what lessons can be drawn from the pandemic to inform future responses in the area of education. It will highlight the obstacles facing refugees in their attempts to access quality education and how those have been exacerbated by the pandemic and the resulting socio-economic impact, and explore the crucial role of the private sector in helping overcome those challenges to ensure displaced youth can continue to learn and benefit from advances in technology and connectivity. The session will also showcase how potential corporate partners can mobilize support from financial investment through to sustainable investments in infrastructure, connectivity, hardware, training and digital job creation. Representing different but complementary voices on these matters, session speakers will show how and why forcibly displaced persons must be supported in their education journey so that they can develop their skills and contribute their potential in the post-COVID world. Now is the time to scale up those efforts – not only to fix the damage wrought by the coronavirus on education worldwide, but also to have a real and lasting positive impact on the lives of millions of vulnerable children and youth in displaced communities around the world.    Speakers:

Ensuring Digital Equity

Main Stage | Technology & Workforce Development September 23, 2020 (Wednesday) at 15:05 ET Session Length:  25 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: Visa Program Partner: Yahoo! Finance (remove from SM/Stage Graphics) Session Description In a digital age where our lives and business are conducted online, digital equity is essential for a fair and inclusive society, particularly as we rebuild from the global pandemic. Digital equity is the assurance that all individuals and small and micro businesses (SMBs) can participate in and receive full benefits from digital platforms. This includes connections, availability of appropriate services, and the ability to understand and know how to use and drive technology and its outcomes to solve problems and achieve goals. Digital platforms are impacting individuals, businesses and economies with great promise, but with great peril to those who fail to employ that technology to capture their benefits. SMBs in particular, need to change and adapt their business to survive and grow, or risk being left behind. If this happens, inequality among and within countries will continue to grow, and there is evidence that just as digital technology advances economic growth exponentially, inequality gap growth is also accelerated when distribution of technology is uneven. We do not live in a digitally equitable world. Existing social and economic inequalities mean digital exclusion of individuals, small businesses and communities. Strategic Dialogue | COVID Response & Recovery - Concordia Action Alliance September 24, 2020 (Thursday) at 08:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Rwanda Development Board Session Description This Strategic Dialogue will discuss what opportunities exist for international and regional investment into African economies and the importance of getting this moment right. COVID-19 has disrupted economies worldwide, but the potential loss of this past decade’s gains across Africa would have a devastating impact on not only national and regional economies but the global recovery as a whole. Africa is expected to experience a contraction in economic growth resulting in output losses between $37 and $79 billion. Growth will weaken substantially in the two fastest growing areas (the West African Economic and Monetary Union and the East African Community) due to weak external demand and disruptions to supply chains and domestic production caused by COVID-19, and Africa’s three largest economies -- Nigeria, South Africa, and Angola -- are being hit by persistently weak growth and investment. An abundance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and micro-SMEs, as well as a pervasive informal economy and full economies hinged to global tourism, further complicate the economic recovery and employment outlook.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Alain Ebobissé, CEO, Africa50 Status: Accept | Andrew Young, Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, U.S. Africa Command, DoD/DoS Status: Accept | Clare Akamanzi, CEO, Rwanda Development Board Status: Accept | James Mwangi, Managing Director, CEO, Equity Group Holdings PLC Status: Accept | José Ulisses Correia e Silva, Prime Minister, Republic of Cape Verde Status: Accept | Kate Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, Digital Impact Alliance Status: Accept | Monica Geingos, First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, Office of The President Status: Accept | Olusegun Obasanjo, Former President, Federal Republic of Nigeria Status: Accept | Tsitsi Masiyiwa, Founder and Co-Chair, Higherlife Foundation Status: Accept | Vivian Onano, Youth Advisor, Global Education Monitoring Report, UNESCO

Not Just A Trend: Farm to Table Building a Better Food System

Main Stage | Food Systems & Security September 24, 2020 (Thursday) at 09:05 ET Session Length:  20 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: (None) Session Description According to the FAO, agricultural demand in 2050 for food, feed, and biofuel will be nearly 50% greater than it was in 2012. Furthermore, agricultural productivity faces limitations due to climate change, urbanization, availability of natural resources, and more. Consumer trends have also been shifting, with increased consumer awareness of health and environmental considerations. In response to these challenges, the farm to table model has grown in popularity. Under this model, restaurants source ingredients from local farmers which allows fresher produce to be used, cuts down on transportation costs, and supports the local economy. Join Chef Dan Barber, co-owner of Michelin-starred farm to table restaurants Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, and Nigerian Farmer Mosunmola Umoru, Founder and CEO of Honeysuckles PTL Ventures, in this session to further explore how both the farm and table are adjusting to meet food system challenges head on.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Dan Barber, Chef & Co-owner, Blue Hill Restaurant Status: Accept | Mosunmola Umoru, Founder & CEO, Farmshoppe™

Patron Member Roundtable: Saving Childhood in Agricultural Value Chains

Patron Member Roundtable | Environmental Sustainability & Supply Chains September 24, 2020 (Thursday) at 12:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Save the Children Federation, Inc Session Description When looked through the lens of a smallholder farming family, food security is a double edged issue. Many of the crops that are in high global demand from consumers are produced by some of the most impoverished and marginalized farming communities on the planet. From coffee to cocoa, as well as tea, palm, vanilla and more – the farm to table journey often begins in a setting without basic education and healthcare. Poor farming families grapple with high rates of malnutrition and child labor, as well as gender disparities and opaque access to markets. Our collective effort to save childhood in the value chain demands new approaches, rapid learning, and an honest discussion about how to move forward in new ways. We must do this to ensure the protection of millions of children who are impacted by and living within the global food value chain. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Perry Yeatman, Head, Corporate Partnerships, Save the Children Federation, Inc

Patron Member Roundtable: Digitalizing Government: Providing Rapid Stimulus to a Global Economy Slowed by COVID-19

Patron Member Roundtable | Converting Conversations to Action September 25, 2020 (Friday) at 08:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Walmart International Session Description Digitalizing government by moving paper-based processes online enables businesses to operate with transparency and efficiency. For example, businesses and ‘shovel-ready’ planned investments can face months or years of delays before the necessary licenses and permits can be obtained, construction can break ground, and businesses can open their doors. Such delays represent lost employment, a brake on growth, invite corruption, and diminish a country’s economic competitiveness. With COVID-19 many in-person, paper-based government processes have ground to a halt. Governments that have digitalized are sustaining services as remote work dominates, protecting workers, and enabling businesses to operate. Governments slow to digitalize risk their economies falling further behind.  This meeting will bring together high-level thought leaders and experts from the public and private sectors, along with voices from academia and international organizations, to discuss the hurdles and brainstorm the break-through strategies needed to accelerate digitalizing governments so economies can recover digitalized and stronger than before. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Daniel Trujillo, Global Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, Walmart Stores, Inc

Patron Member Roundtable: Achieving Impact: Overcoming Political Roadblocks

Patron Member Roundtable | Converting Conversations to Action September 25, 2020 (Friday) at 12:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Connect Frontier LLC Session Description A phenomenal idea is not enough. To achieve impact requires understanding—and successfully navigating—policy and political issues. This is true whether scaling up a social venture, entering a new market, partnering with local governments or institutions, or implementing a development program. In any venture, understanding the players, their incentives, the regulatory landscape, the trends – and much more – will make all the difference. Otherwise, even the best of ideas, like countless before them, will run straight into the buzz saw of entrenched interests. This roundtable, focused on working in developing countries, is a chance to share experiences and learn best practices to seize the opportunities and mitigate the risks posed by policy and political issues and create a political strategy to achieve impact at scale. The discussion will be chaired by seasoned political risk expert Grant Harris, CEO of Connect Frontier LLC. This session is by invitation only for select All-Access pass holders.  Speakers: Status: Accept | Grant Harris, CEO, Connect Frontier LLC

Community Discussion: Businesses Partnering with Refugees

Community Discussion | Converting Conversations to Action September 25, 2020 (Friday) at 12:00 ET Session Length:  60 Minutes Session Status:  Confirmed Program Sponsor: (None) Program Partner: Refugees International & Refugee Congress Session Description A large majority of Americans believe the country should be a place of safety and refuge. This includes business leaders from across the country, many of whom employ and support refugees and other immigrants. From local shops to the world’s biggest multinationals, these leaders know that people who are or have been refugees possess grit, resilience, and dedication -- not only as employees, but as community members committed to building their lives in America and giving back. In the trying times of COVID-19, there are more than 176,000 refugees working in the health care sector, and 175,000 in food supply. From 2005 to 2014, refugees paid $63 billion more in taxes than they received in benefits at all levels of government. Nevertheless, in recent years, refugee admissions have dropped to historic lows and the ability of people to seek asylum at the US southern border has been essentially stopped. In this roundtable, business leaders, refugees, and experts will come together to discuss the idea of mobilizing businesses to sign a pledge of support. Building on and connecting with existing partnerships and initiatives, the business pledge would seek to demonstrate the diverse, bipartisan, and robust coalition for refugee protection and inclusion.
