I'm a firm believer that one has to do what makes one happy.

Sometimes that doesn't come easy, career, marriage, chil-dren, fears and a world of things keep us from doing it.

After my divorce I learned to let go and realized that nothing lasts forever, absolutely nothing! And I went from being a full time "stay at home mom" and a "desperate housewife", to a full time "Idontknowwhatisgonnahappentome" person.

Only when I went back to do what I loved, things started to get better and it opened a thousand doors for the spirit.

I got my first 'on air' job at a radio station, went to remodel a house in Europe (my first project abroad) and traveled Ev-erywhere; from Colombia to post earthquake in Haiti work-ing for my family's company.

Then came the TV shows, magazine articles and having my work featured for the first time in a book. That's when I learned that we don't have to do things for others to like it, we have to do things that inspire us and be consequent with ourselves.

Life as a collage

Amazing things have always happened to me without looking for them. I believe that when you do something, somebody is always going to find you. When you have a life that changes constantly and have met so many interesting people, the mind plays tricks on you, that is the reason why I write down everything I do ev-ery day and when I look at it, all I see is a collage of places, people, activities, emotions, expressions and situations.

As a designer, I am person who loves to transform every-thing around her; it’s easier for me to put into perspective constant changes in LIFE’S shape, color and style. As a communicator, I would tell you how I perceive LIFE as a true COLLAGE of events; dreams still waiting to come true, a handful of achievements, funny stories and of course, a little bit of drama… We all have that, don’t we?

I know LIFE is different for everyone, but it will never stop surprising us, and that’s what this magazine is all about.

Every month we’ll be taking you through that collage, filling the pages with real life histories, beauty tips, home ideas, legal advice, music reviews, restaurant recommendation and the best things to do in the city because that is life... a collage!, and I hope it is as entertaining to you as it is to us. "Be truthful to yourself before anybody else"

In order for your make up to look gor-geous you have to take care of your skin first. That is the secret weapon.

With age our skin changes and some-times our skin type does too so is necessary to change products in the process for our skin to look always ra-diant.

I will tell you what the 6 different skin types are and how to choose the right foundation for every one.

NORMAL SKINNormal skin is the least problematic type.It looks clean and smooth and has a good circulation and

healthy complexion. Small to medium pores.Almost never has blackheadsCream or liquid foundation is your best choice if your skin is normal.

EVERY SKIN TYPE

OILY SKINOily skin is problematic – it usually looks

greasy, thick, coarse, and shiny and tends to break into acne.

A good thing, though, is that oily skin is not prone much to aging and

wrinkling. Had enlarged pores.

Almost always has black heads.Pressed powder foundation is the best choice if this is your

skin type.

A perfect make up doesn’t come along.

DRY SKINDry skin can easily develop a sallow tone, wrinkles, and fine pores, and it is very prone to aging and irritating. Fine poresSmooth texture Almost never has black heads.Avoid powder foundations since they can accentuate wrinkles and expression lines. Liquid foundations are better for this type of skin.

SENSITIVE SKINSensitive skin is usually very dry, tends to feel tight, and becomes inflamed and irritated easily, develops reddish and scaly areas, can be itchy and tingly, and is prone to breaking into spots. It is the most problematic and fragile type of skin.Hypoallergenic, paraben free, fragrance free founda-tions are recommended for this skin type.

Acne skin is usually oily and distinguished by black-heads and pimples. If neglected and uncared

for these blemishes can advance to a worsened stage and leave you with

scarred and pitted skin.Choose foundations with

no oil, sometimes is recommended to use powder foun-dations to control de greasy look.

EVERY SKIN TYPECOMBINATION SKINCombination skin is a blend of both oily and dry skin. People with combination skin usually find that their oily skin is concentrated in the T-zone, while their cheeks remain dry. Choose cream or liquid foundation if this is your skin type.

It’s a nightmare, you’re driving and you see a cop car, lights flashing . . .

you drank a bit at a so-cial event (allegedly), you panic, what should you do?

Pull over immediately to the side of the road, be sure not to obstruct traffic.

Be cooperative and respectful , always be sure to have your license, registration, and updated insurance information available. If you appear disorganized, the officer may think you are drunk, incoherent and may get annoyed. You want to keep the officer calm, not on the defensive.

However, do not allow the officer to intimidate you, as you have constitutional rights , you have a right to remain silent and

What to do if you are pulledover for suspicion of DUI

to have an attorney present, and protections against unlawful searches and seizures, Do not make any statements to the police without an attorney present. Additionally, do not consent to a search of the vehicle.

If the officer suspects you are drunk he may require you to do a field sobriety test and/or blood alcohol tests. If you refuse the breath-alizer test, you may get arrested for a refusal, will need to post a bond and be subject to a 6 months license suspension. However if you consent to the breathalizer test and found to be over the legal limit, the test may be used as conclusive evidence against you in court, so those are risks you might need to weigh.

But, be aware that each situation is different. Consult with a criminal defense attorney, as early as possible, regarding the nuances and any possible defenses in your specific situ-ation. And remember, the best advise is al-ways “don’t drink and drive”.

Tanorexia “Addiction to Tanning”

Term used to describe the condition in whicha person has the obsessive need to have

darker skin, this being a compulsive disorder that leads to an extreme anxiety of

never losing the tan on your skin.By Dr. Maribel Pedrozo

Tanning May Be Euphoric

The study has found that the UV rays in tanning beds have an effect the production endorphins, chemicals re-leased from the brain that produce euphoric like feeling in the body. Endorphins are often referred to a our bodies natural morphine, reducing the pain we feel.

A person feels pleasure when sunbathing without con-sidering the damages caused to the skin. This type of addiction is similar to other disorders such as anorexia, alcoholism and others that should be treated by a doc-tor and psychologist. It is more common in women than in men between the ages of 20 thru 40 years of age. The addiction increases each year reaching a high level during the winter season due to the use of tanning beds

and sprays.

Keep in mind that excessive sun exposure causes serious burns, wrinkles, dehydration,

flacid skin, solar damage, sun spots and skin cancer. A person suffering from this disorder makes tanning a top priority in their daily life. Some celebrities that like to look tanned are Luis Miguel, Fernando Colunga, Lindsay Lohan, Jeniffer Lopez,Pamela Anderson and George Clooney.

Tips:Sun exposure is necessary but moderately. Our skin has a memory since all the sun exposure dur-ing our youth is manifested at the adult stage with skin conditions. The safest sun exposure is in the morning and at the end of the day.Always apply sunscreen every three hours if at the beach or while doing outdoor activities.Hydrate the skin after sun exposure. If a suspicious lesion is detected on the skin, please visit your doctor.

Due to an overwhelming reception by the South Florida community and strong ticket sales, Cava-

lia’s new production, “Odysseo,” an-nounced that a third additional week will be added to the limited engage-ment of the production at Bicenten-nial Park, which will extend its stay in Miami until March 18, 2012. After an extended standing ovation on opening night, Miami Herald’s Howard Cohen commented about the show “If Walt Disney were still alive, he might create a show as magical as Cavalia’s new ‘Odys-seo.’ But it wouldn’t be better than the wonderful world mastermind Normand Latourelle has cre-ated under his White Big Top.” Nathalie Rodriguez of WMIA-FM, 98.3, describes the show as “One word split in two:

awe-some! It’s artistic & majesti-cal, but most importantly not to be missed!” Soul of Miami raved “The show is truly amazing. Between the astounding horsemanship and acro-batics combined with the awesome scenery and visual effects, this show will leave you wanting to see more. This is one show you will not want to miss.”

“We are delighted to finally be back in Miami,” expressed Normand La-tourelle, founder and artistic direc-tor of Cavalia. “Our first show was received wonderfully by the South Florida community two years ago, but the reception of our new produc-

tion, ‘Odysseo,’ has been over-whelmingly wonderful. In an effort to please the public, we will extend the run to please the high demand.”

Marriages end, but when ex-spouses are also parents

the connection doesn’t end when the divorce is final-ized. It can be extremely dif-ficult to get past the painful history and overcome any built-up resentment you

It’s a team effort: Co-parenting after a divorce

have towards an ex-spouse. However, when children are involved, it is important to focus on their needs first. Co-parenting can facilitate and ensure your children’s

needs are met,so they are able to retain close relation-ships with both parents.

Putting your children’s needs ahead of your own is the first

CO-PARENTING

Page 23: In Brickell Magazine 2

step to being a mature respon-sible co-parent. Below are a few basic tips on how to co-parent following a divorce:

• Communicate with the other parent: Peaceful and regu-larcommunication with your ex-spouse is essential to the success of co-parenting. Com-munication with your ex-spouse can be tough. However, keep in mind that is doesn’t always have to been done in person. A brief e-mail, telephone mes-sage or text messageare great ways to communicate with the other parent without having a face-to-face conversation. The goal is to establish conflict-free communication, so see which type of contact works best for you. Remember to always keep the conversation focused on the children.

• Respect one another: Being considerate and respectful of the other parent’s time can go a long way. Let your ex-spouse know about school events, be flexible with your schedule when possible, and consider the other parent’s opinions and/or considerations relating to issues surrounding the chil-dren.

• Keep timesharing consis-tent: A consistent timeshar-

ing schedule helps children feel more secure and allows them to carve out time to do extracurricular activities and spend time with their friends. Additionally, having similar homework, dinner, and bed-times can go a long way to-ward your child’s adjustment to living in two homes.

• Remember that the holi-days are not all about you: Holidays can be very diffi-cult, especially when they are close in time to a recent di-vorce. If the other parent has the children during a specific holiday, encourage the chil-dren to have a good time with their other parent. Your children deserve to enjoy the holidays. Co-parenting can be difficult, but rewarding if done well. A divorce can be very stressful for a child. Co-parenting can relieve some of those stress-es and facilitate a happy and-healthy parent-child relation-ship with both parents.

3rd Annual Original St Patrick’s Day Street Festival, hosted by Brickell Irish Pub. Estab-lished in 2009 as the first Irish pub in Brick-ell and voted Best New Bar in Miami by New Times Magazine in 2010, Brickell Irish Pub has become Miami’s “Little Dublin” every March 17th for the last few years.

The very first St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place on March

Considering that this year’s Festival falls on a Saturday for the first time, expect the crowds to be larger and a lot more enthusiastic than in previous years. The Streets outside Brickell Irish Pub will be closing early, and the celebrations will kick off at noon, when party goers will fill the streets to enjoy tasty beer, great food and rocking live musical performances until mid-night. There will also be plenty to do for the little ones, including face painting booths.

Where is the body of Eva Ed-wards? This is the question that plagues Lynel Haengel to this date, the granddaughter of the missing, who never met her grandmother since she was only two weeks old when Eva disap-peared 38 years ago. “I would love to find her remains, so as to at least give her a Christian

burial” uttered Haengel to investigators in late 2010.

Her case is one of many that have been archived as un-solved in the cold-case-division for Miami-Dade County. Even though the case has been stored away, the emo-tional scars derived from this abrupt disappearance still concern loved ones who claim the responsible for this in-cident was the husband of the victim, James Edwards aka “T-Bond”.

Eva married James Edwards in 1949 and had 5 children together: twins, Roy and Roland; followed by three fe-males: Iva Lynn, Rena and Rita Gail. The family lived be-tween Hialeah and Fort Myers. The children of the couple

told authorities that they recall their father as a violent man and their mother as a submissive but good woman.

Prior to the disappearance, Eva decided to leave her husband and move-in with her daughter Iva Lynn. The case begins in the morning of October 26, 1974, when Eva Edwards had just finished a day’s work as a waitress at the Ranch House Res-taurant, located on West 49th street in Hialeah. Her husband, James Edwards, picked her up to talk about their marriage. Together, they crossed the street and arrived at Big Daddy’s Lounge, where they stayed for a while, according to a wait-ress who saw them leave. This was the last time Eva Edwards was seen alive.

During questioning by the investigators, James Edward de-nied any wrongdoing, claiming that he dropped-off his wife at the entrance of the building. He also added that there were several men around the area where she was dropped off that looked very suspicious and could be involved in her disap-pearance.

Cold case investigator, Ed Royal, from the Hialeah police de-partment, reopened the investigation years later by the insis-tence of Rena Edwards, Eva’s daughter.

CO

LD C

ASE Where is the

body of Eva Edwards?

24

Page 27: In Brickell Magazine 2

Another aspect of the case that caught the attention of the investi-gators was the fact that the daughters informed them that James en-joyed taking photos of his daughters with his wife in a bikini. Lynn said “He always put me and my mother in bikini to please him; if you look at the pho-tos, we laughed even though our eyes were very sad”. “I knew I hated it” said Rena, “when I was nine or ten years old, he used to get to my bed to try to touch me, and I said no” ... “I never wore tight pants because he looked me up and down”.

This family has had many problems: Roy one of the twins, committed suicide at a young age; the other brother has had legal problems, while their sisters have grown up with full of fears and emotional traumas.

So far 3 sources point towards James Edwards as the prime suspect: His children have reiterated on several occasions that they have heard their drunken father say that he killed his mother; his youngest daughter Rita, also told detectives that her father had threatened her by saying: “I’ll kill you like killed your mother”; Daniel Ricks, husband of Rita informed that he was also threatened by Edwards: “I’ll kill you like I did my wife”. Ed Royal, case investigator, concluded that from his experience the more likely scenario was that Mr. Edwards was involved in the disappearance of his wife.

The difficulty in solving this case, according to experts is the lack of a body, which would be conclusive proof of the death of Eva Edwards. The police searched the canal around the apart-ment and found noth-ing. They also checked the area of Hialeah and Fort Myers, around where the suspect lived, but the area is full of rocks, swamps, and

other perfect places for a corpse to go unnoticed.

Edwards’s daughters accused their father of rape, but did not raise any legal charge against him, in fact Eva decided to leave her husband after her daughter Iva Lynn confessed, with tears in her eyes, that her father had raped her since the age of nine and that she was afraid he would do the same with her daughter of two weeks, Haengel Lynel.

James Edwards died in freedom, Eva’s body was never found, while their children and grandchildren have had a dramatic life full of ups-and-downs. Rita for example, has been arrested for prostitution and other felonies; Lynel, the granddaughter, also has a police record that includes theft and other crimes.

In America everyone is innocent until proven guilty and this case is no exception. The granddaughter’s hope is now to at least visit the remains of her grandmother, who she never met, but learned to miss. iN

So you get up in morn-ing and you are getting

ready to go to work. You look at yourself in the mirror. You smile (hint- starting the day

with a smile can set the tone for the rest of your day).

A CleaningI Just Want

Today is the day that the little stain , the visible hard build up in between your teeth, your bleeding red gums, or your sweetie’s turn away from your morning kiss has motivated you to go to the dentist! Next, you ei-ther call or walk into a new dentist’s office...”I would like an appointment for a cleaning. I will be a new patient to the office.”

The friendly receptionist helps co-ordinate your schedule and locates an appointment for you. She informs you that the appointment is planned for an exam by the dentist , diag-nostic x-rays will be taken, and your cleaning. So you kindly remind her that you just wanted a cleaning.Health care providers are held to the

standard of practice of their profes-sion. A cleaning is considered part of comprehensive dental treatment and is to be supported by a documented comprehensive dental exam. A com-prehensive dental exam includes diagnostic documentation which consists of the doctor’s clinical eval-uation of findings and conditions as well as x-rays. Florida State Statute lists oral cancer screening as part of a comprehensive exam as well as an evaluation of your periodontal (gum) health. There are certain findings that can only be seen directly with a visual exam and there are findings that can only be detected radio-graphically. The exam encompasses the documentation of both.

So you tell the kind receptionist that the last time you went to your oth-er dentist x-rays were taken then, so you don’t need x-rays. But that was about two years ago before you moved to Miami. This scenario oc-curs in dental offices throughout the country, several times a week. It is not a unique circumstance. There are helpful pointers when being seen as a patient in a new dental of-fice. Being prepared will facilitate a smoother experience. So let’s recap.....**A cleaning is part of comprehensive care. Therefore, the treating dentist will need to document a comprehen-sive exam. **X-rays are considered current when they are less than one year old.

26H

EALT

H

Page 29: In Brickell Magazine 2

If you are bringing your x-rays from your previous dentist they should be current, the same as want the new dentist is requiring for their evaluation, and must be of diagnostic quality (which means they must be easily readable by the dentist that is seeing you).

If your most recent x-rays were taken with a prior den-tist less than a year prior, contact your previous dentist and have them forward a duplicate of your x-rays to your new dentist. They may charge you a fee to do so. Do this prior to your appointment so your new dentist has them in hand at the time of your appointment.

**When you arrive for your appointment, make sure that you have a picture ID with you. If you have insurance, bring a copy of your insurance card. If your dental cov-erage is under the policy of a parent or spouse, you will need to provide additional information on them, other-wise the claim cannot be processed or paid.

**Bring a current list of any and all medications that you are taking. If you take multiple medications you can ask your pharmacy to provide you a printout of your medica-tions.

**You should also provide your treating physician’s con-tact information. The oral cavity is inherently connected to the rest of your body, and there are instances when conditions and medications are relevant to the manage-ment of your oral health care.

**Basic x-rays are updated once a year at your checkup appointments.

Once you are an established patient of a dental practice then YES, you can “just have a cleaning.”
