Coming Clean – Renewables in NumbersIt’s no dirty secret - renewable energy is powering more parts of the world in a nod to a cleaner future. Here’s efficiency by the numbers to sense where we’re going.

15% of households in Australia have solar panels on their roofs, the highest household solar PV per capita in the world.

2500 hectares of land in the Sahara Desert will be occupied by what’s going to be the world’s largest solar plant. When completed in 2018, it will provide electricity for more than a million people.

39.3 billion cubic metres of water, or the equivalent of 39.3 trillion litres, can be stored in the reservoir of China’s Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower station. That’s enough water to fill more than 15 million Olympic-size swimming pools.

360 glass mirrors make up a giant light sculptor within the German Reichstag in Berlin, providing natural lighting by reflecting light down into the chambers. This is one of the many energy-saving features of the Reichstag, known to be one of the greenest parliament buildings in the world.

1887 was the year the first electricity-generating windmill was built. Scottish academic James Blyth used it to light his holiday home in the village of Marykirk.

3,000 hot spring resorts can be found in volcanically-active Japan, more than anywhere else in the world. Known as onsens, they rely on water from geothermally heated springs, believed to have healing powers due to its mineral content.

Floral Feast

G a s t r o s a v v y

Peppered over salads, preserved in jams and conserves, whipped into sweet confectionery or muddled into cocktails, edible blooms have found their way into our diets and culinary recipes. Far from being just a snazzy garnish, some flowers take centre stage in a number of cuisines around the world.

The bright orange-yellow squash blossoms, well-loved for their delicate sweetness and light texture, are packed with antioxidants and can be eaten in their entirety. In Italian cuisine, fresh squash blossoms are stuffed with creamy cheese and herb fillings before being battered and frittered. Vietnamese cuisine also enjoys a similar version as an appetiser which is stuffed with shrimp and deep fried.

A classic Bengali dish features the tear-shaped purple flowers of the banana fruit, which are rich in flavonoids and purported to have medicinal benefits. Mochar Ghonto, as it is called, involves stir frying the banana blossoms with herbs, ground spices and chickpeas, resulting in a fragrant, dry curry.

The Chinese, on the other hand, are fond of osmanthus for its floral and fruity aroma, and is commonly used to make desserts like jelly and cake.

Blooming blossoms also offer a taste of the seasons. In an ode to the cherry blossom season in Japan, eateries and restaurants in Tokyo go all out in their sakura-themed sweet treats, from rice cakes to scones and doughnuts. Through tastebuds, that’s how the flavours of spring burst to life.

Grab a hearty meal of Bò Né at the popular Lan Hương Cafe and satisfy your appetite with a hot plate of beef, pork ball, egg and baguette. Next, delve into the roots of Vietnam’s rich Indic history in the Museum of Cham Sculpture which houses intricate sculptures from the 5th to 15th centuries. Make a stop at the Da Nang Cathedral, another centre of religious importance nearby. Affectionately termed Con Gà (RoosterCathedral) after the weathercock atop the steeple, its candy-pink facade and gothic architecture is unmistakable.

Use your haggling skills at Han Market and experience the vibrant local way of life. Da Nang’s largest market sells a variety of items ranging from food and fabrics to souvenirs at inexpensive prices. In the evening, enjoy a spectacular view of the Dragon Bridge as it comes alive with brilliant rainbow lights. Large crowds gather to watch the steel dragon spew water or fire from its mouth during weekends and festivities. Take a stroll along Han River and appreciate marble carvings of animals and deities, or hop on a Xích Lô or rickshaw ride, winding through the streets of this lively city.

Soak in the cool breeze with a scenic motorbike ride up Son Tra (Monkey) Mountain, a lush national park, home to the rare red-faced monkey and other unique flora and fauna. Admire the expansive Linh Ung Pagoda which harmonises the modern and traditional designs of Vietnamese pagodas. It is most famous for its majestic Goddess of Mercy Statue, the tallest statue of Buddha in Vietnam. The stunning statue of white marble contains 17 levels and 21 miniature Buddha sculptures. Savour a few moments of tranquility as a wonderful panorama of the city, mountains and surrounding seas unfolds.

Those seeking a respite from bustling city life will find serenity at the Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone and marble hills. The most well known is Thủy Sơn, where breathtaking coastal views, caves and temples await the explorer. A ten-minute walk will transport you to the pristine sands and transparent waters of Non Nuoc Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and a hotspot for water sports enthusiasts. Back in the city centre, look for Ba Duong. The humble stallin a small alley is famous for their Banh Xeo, a pancake dish with pork, shrimp and herbs.

In the Victorian Era some 150 years ago, where social convention dictated reservation and the suppression of feelings, flower gifting gained popularity as an outlet for emotions that could not be easily expressed. Today, millions of people continue to upkeep this tradition – we have all once racked our brains to pick the perfect flower for an occasion.

Whether in music, poetry or painting, the presence of flowers in art has constantly reminded us of the grandeur of nature, one that never goes out of style. Ancient Egyptians first depicted the lotus flower in art as they observed the flower close its petals and sink into the water at night, seeming to reappear to bloom at the light of day. The earliest flower dictionary, titled Le Language de Fleursand, was written in Paris in 1819. Poets from William Blake and Robert Frost to musicians like Seal and Bon Jovi have also created work inspired by the beauty of flowers.

GLORIOUS GARDENS

Public gardens are increasingly sought in today’s fast-paced urban lifestyles as places to seek refuge from the stress of city living and rediscover Mother Nature. These spaces are grounds for a multitude of activities, from dates and family outings to meditation and exercise. As the gentle green calms, take a break from the eyesore of crowded skylines and set your sights on fields of blooms.

With more than 45 million flowers on display, the Dubai Miracle Garden is the largest garden in the world. Its intricate plant sculptures of wild shapes (think pyramids, igloos and stars) and kaleidoscopic colours, is a landscape straight out of a fantasy film.

Then there’s Maruyama Park, which transforms into one of Kyoto’s most breathtaking spots every April when its cherry trees are in full bloom. With a delicate pink canopy that cascades downwards, the shidarezakura (weeping cherry tree) is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the park. Crowds gather to admire the evening illuminations during the season that give these ephemeral blossoms a magical charm. The karesansui (dry landscape garden) at Ryōan-ji Temple constitutes one of

the finest examples of Zen landscaping. Don’t miss the 15 basalt rocks which float in an expanse of white gravel. They remain an enduring mystery in this garden of Japanese elegance that leaves a visitor more questions than answers.

Just outside of Paris, the Garden of Versailles is perhaps one of the most famous gardens in the world. Under the monarchy of Louis XIV, the immaculate landscape, complete with an orangery, grand fountains and bronze and marble sculptures, epitomises the French Baroque style and is nothing short of perfection.

In contrast, China’s Classical Gardens of Suzhou captures the essence of classical Chinese garden design which seeks to recreate natural landscape in miniature. Beijing’s Summer Palace Garden, also known as the largest imperial garden in China, has a vastness which gives one the sense of discovering a majestic island in itself, complete with both natural hills and open water as well as man-made pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges. Built in 1750 during the Qing Dynasty, the garden is a step into a traditional Chinese painting.

FESTIVAL FLAIR

s p o t l i G h t

Horses pulling gigantic flower floats, hill-tribe people showing off elaborate costumes and jolly onlookers pelting blossoms at people on floats who defend themselves with tennis rackets. From the quirky to elaborate, festivals and parades such as the Chiang Mai Flower Festival in Thailand, Infioriata di Genzano in Italy and Batalla de Flores in Spain are magnets for travellers looking to feast their eyes and immerse in unique cultural experiences.

French writer Jean Giono describes Lavender as “the soul of Provence”, so it comes as no surprise that this province produces close to 80 per cent of the world’s lavender. Every August, villages come together for the Fête de la Lavande à Sault (Sault Lavender Festival) to celebrate the lavender harvest. Lavender-cutting championships commence heatedly

and the song and dance of Provencal folk music groups inspire an energetic, lively mood.

Horse and buggy parades and various markets and games unite the young and old in a common fondness of the beautiful violet blossoms that spill endlessly across the countryside.

Elsewhere in the world, The Flower Carpet is a biennial event in Brussels where volunteer gardeners from around Belgium convene at the Grand Palace to weave an 1800 square-metre carpet out of 600,000 begonias. Past editions have featured vibrant, mesmerising compositions depicting animals and natural elements in Japanese tradition, geometric patterns inspired by Turkish kilims and African tribal designs, all

completed within a remarkable 4 hours. The striking floral aesthetic is complemented by a specially composed musical theme as well as a daily concert and stunning sound-and-light show- all senses are engaged in a true spirit of celebration.

In Asia, the Rikugien Gardens in Tokyo is designated as a national site of scenic beauty, offering one of the best spots for autumn foliage viewing. Every fall, huge crowds gather to appreciate the evening illumination event. The lights cast the bright flames of autumn leaves in a lovely glow as red and gold reflections glimmer on the peaceful waters. Souvenirs and snacks are on sale for all who gather to share in this celebration of autumn’s rich allure, before the season’s vibrancy fades with the onset of winter.

MERRY MARKETS

Markets, on the other hand are a way for travellers to discover the hustle bustle of the flower trade. Aalsmeer in the Netherlands is the largest trading centre for plants and flowers in the world. A big eye-opener with its robots, complicated tunnels and mega refrigerators, almost 20 million flowers from all over the world are sold each day through auctions.

Down under, Flemington Flower Market in Sydney, supplies roughly 75 per cent of wholesale flowers sold in the city and is a good spot for amateur flower enthusiasts to pick out some blossoms too. The 170 or so traders in the bustling market offer an unparalleled range of rainbow-hued flowers from powder blue baby’s breath to sunset-pink freesias and the native crimson kangaroo paw. Rise early for the freshest picks!

On the other hand, Bangkok’s Pak Khlong Talat (Flower Market) comes alive after midnight. A sprawling market and tourist destination that stays open for 24 hours a day, it is a common sight to see crowds winding through the unending aisles of roses, forget-me-nots, orchids, lilies and flora-related items. However, the greatest spectacle only occurs in the pre-dawn darkness, when the roadside explodes into kaleidoscopic colour as vendors receive floral goods from various flower-growing areas across the country. Most flowers are sold in packs of 50 or 100 flowers at highly affordable prices.

If you’re in Paris, stop by the Marché aux Fleurs et aux Oiseaux. It has been operating for more than two centuries and is one of the last remaining flower markets in the city. Flowers, plants and shrubs indigenous to Western Europe as well as tropical plants and flowers can be found in abundance. Yet, the market’s truly distinctive feature is that on Sundays, the floral scene retreats as bird traders arrive, setting up rustic cages containing doves, parakeets, budgies, exotic parrots and macaws. Such street markets form a part of Paris’ old charm; they are a type of traditional community retail that is slowly dying out in the modern world.

Enjoy the oldest of London’s eight Royal Parks on a route along the edge of the park next to the Horse Guards Parade. This is the heart of ceremonial London, where Changing of the Guard takes place every morning. Make time for a leisurely stroll across the Blue Bridge, which offers iconic city views including the Big Ben and the London Eye. There’s a prime photo opportunity at the Tiffany Fountain, a 20-feet water plume with a grand backdrop of Buckingham Palace. Don’t forget to meet the resident pelicans near the lake before you get on your journey.

ST JAMES’S PARK5

Adjacent to St James’s Park is Green Park, the smallest of the capital’s eight Royal Parks but undeniably one of the busiest. The cycle route along Constitution Hill will take you through a tree-lined avenue to this “peaceful triangle” where you’re welcome to spread out your picnic mat and bathe in the sun. For a few weeks every spring, Green Park turns into a spectacle of yellow when more than 250,000 daffodils start to bloom.

GREEN PARK4

Once a royals-only retreat and hunting ground, this elaborate, sprawling 410-acre park opened up in 1845 for everyone’s enjoyment. To date, it still remains as one of the most popular open spaces among people of all ages. In summer, roses, begonias and delphiniums are in full bloom in Queen Mary’s Gardens and music fills the air with frequent performances in the open-air theatre. Among other attractions, the park also boasts a boating lake, several playgrounds and the London Zoo.

REGENT’S PARK3

The green lung in the heart of London is one of the most cyclist-friendly parks. This route is mostly flat and loops around the perimeter, making it safe for beginners and children. Simply hire a bicycle at one of the numerous self-service Cycle Hire Docking stations and follow the designated cycle route, which takes you past famous landmarks starting from the Marble Arch, Speakers’ Corner, The Rose Garden and the Diana Memorial Fountain. Continue eastwards along Constitution Hill for a view of Buckingham Palace, or head west to explore the Kensington Gardens.

FOR cITY SLIcKERS

Gardens by the Bay You haven’t been to Singapore until you’ve visited this fantastical 21st century garden. Spanning 101 hectares of reclaimed land, the horticultural landmark’s main attractions are the world’s biggest columnless greenhouses. For some respite from Singapore’s tropical heat, head to the Flower Dome conservatory which replicates the cool-dry spring climates of the Mediterranean region and boasts a beautiful tapestry of unique flora and fauna, including a 1,000-year-old Olive Tree. Just as awe-inspiring is the Cloud Forest perpetually shrouded in a veil of mist. Here, you’ll find a showcase of lush tropical greens that flourish at up to 2,000 metres above sea level on a 35m-tall mountain and the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. The Gardens’ centerpiece is the Supertree Grove — towering tree-shaped vertical gardens that display over 200 tropical climbing plants — which is architectural splendor by day, and a dazzling light display by night. Get close to the action as you stroll amid the man-made canopies in the 22m-high suspended OCBC Skyway for splendid panoramic city and waterfront views.

They don’t call Singapore the Garden City for nothing. Whether you’re a shopaholic looking for a breather at an urban park right smack in downtown or an intrepid explorer eager to discover secret rustic hideaways

that only locals are privy to, there’s a myriad of green activities in this urban jungle. Now who says Singapore’s all about skyscrapers and malls?

Fort Canning Park This hilltop green sanctuary overlooking the National Museum, Orchard Road and Clarke Quay is a green wonderland that’s steeped in history. Formerly home to 14th century Malay kings, the 18-hectare park is a world of a difference from the frenetic concrete jungle. History buffs will have a field day from the first step through the imposing historical gothic gates. Mosey through sprawling lawns that were once a Christian cemetery and explore the site of the first botanical garden set up by Singapore’s founder Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822, or visit post-colonial era buildings before you wind up at the Battlebox, an underground British command centre during World War II. It also boasts a Spice Garden and is a popular venue for outdoor music concerts by the world’s biggest music acts.

Singapore Botanic Gardens There’s no excuse to skip Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage site — it sits on the outskirts of Singapore’s glitziest shopping belt, Orchard Road. The Southeast Asian rubber boom in the 19th century has its roots at this 157-year-old garden, and the country’s oldest garden continues to be a leader in horticultural research worldwide. Have a blooming good time admiring the world’s largest orchid display at the National Orchid Garden, or educate the young ones through play at Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden’s water play area, treehouses and kid-friendly interactive exhibits. Balmy afternoons in these expansive fields make this the perfect venue for picnics, a pleasant jogging route and free Singapore Symphony Orchestra concerts regularly held here.

Pulau Ubin A nature paradise that’s a mere 15-minute bumboat ride away. It’s best to set aside a day for this trip back in time to the farming and fishing village of the ’60s, where retro old-school wood and zinc huts and shops still pepper the streets. Walk or rent a bicycle to navigate through the sleepy island’s kampungs (villages). Be sure to make a photo pit-stop at the photogenic abandoned granite quarry at the top of Puaka Hill, or traipse through the Chek Jawa boardwalk during low tide to witness the rich biodiverse ecological system. Who knows, you may even cross paths with a wild boar or two.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Home to 40 percent of the island’s flora and fauna, this lush tropical rainforest is a perennial favourite among hikers, mountain bikers and wildlife enthusiasts. Several trails are marked to indicate the various levels of difficulty and these help make your climb up the steep slopes to the 163m-high Bukit Timah Hill — Singapore’s highest peak — more manageable. If you need a breather from your trek through the verdant greenery, mosey over to Hindhede Quarry — the serene hideout is a gem amid one of the world’s richest ecological systems. One thing to remember: it’s not advisable to feed the monkeys, even if they ask really nicely.

FOR ADVENTURE SEEKERS

A 30-min bus ride from newly opened Ascott Orchard Singapore will take you to The Southern Ridges. Live in Singapore’s shopping district while being a hop away from nature and adventure.

The Southern Ridges Explore up to five picturesque parks via the 9km-long paved trail that connects Mount Faber Park to Kent Ridge Park. The aerial Forest Walk and Canopy Walk afford a bird’s eye view of the jungle canopy that cloaks Telok Blangah Hill Park, the harbour and the Southern Islands in the distance. A romp along the sculptural Henderson Waves, a pedestrian bridge backed by a beautiful skyline and stands at 36 metres above Henderson Road, is surely a photo enthusiast’s dream come true. The end of the route is a rather challenging climb to the Mount Faber Park summit, but at least you have an option of rounding off your excursion in style: on a cable car from the Mount Faber cable car stop across to Sentosa.

MacRitchie Reservoir’s TreeTop Walk Get your heart pumping as you trek through one of the most delightful nature trails on the island. The meandering 11km route takes you through swaths of tropical secondary rainforest. As you bypass the perimeters of the reservoir, you get up close with wildlife like monkeys, squirrels and monitor lizards. The highlight of the forest escapade lies 4.5km deep into the route: a 250m-long TreeTop Walk that promises a thrilling adventure ahead. This 25m-high suspended bridge offers a stunning bird’s eye view of lush forest canopy and makes for a great photo opportunity. It’d be remiss not to bring along some water, sunscreen and mosquito repellant for this jaunt through Singapore’s Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

FOR NATURE LOVERS

Kranji CountrysideIn the resource- and land-scarce Singapore, going farm-hopping is certainly a breath of fresh air. Buy organic produce, milk goats, feed frogs, and even relax at a fish spa to fully experience the rustic charms of the 400-hectare cluster of farms. Refuel at Bollywood Veggies’ bistro, which is as close to farm-to-fork dining as you’ll get in Singapore. Fancy some fowl play? A short bus ride away is Kranji Marshes, the land’s largest freshwater marshland that’s a hotspot for endangered species of birds. Plan ahead to join scheduled farm tours or take a hop-on bus service ($3) to roam about free and easy. To explore at an even more leisurely pace, an overnight farmstay at one of Gardenasia’s black-and-white colonial houses is something to write home about.

FOR FOODIES

Indulge in garden dining experiences in the foodie paradise that is Singapore. Located in the heart of Bishan Park, casual bistro Grub serves up good ol’ comfort food with an Asian twist at wallet-friendly prices. Refuel with specialty dishes such as truffle wagyu burger and mentaiko fries before heading out to rent a bicycle for a whirl around the park or to the nearby Aramsa Spa for a much-kneaded break.

Make time to visit Open Farm Community in Dempsey that has spearheaded farm-to-fork dining in Singapore. Feast on homey Australian fare at the laidback chic joint that sources some of its ingredients from its own 35,000 sq ft garden where you may occasionally spot farmers toiling in the sweltering heat. For more refined taste buds and special occasions, there’s the Corner House. As a nod to its lush surrounds, the Michelin-starred restaurant nestled in Botanic Gardens serves up what it niftily nicknames gastro-botanica—French-influenced contemporary cuisine where botanical elements on the plate. In other words, your meal garnished with pretty herbs and plants is just about as visually-stunning as the view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site the black-and-white colonial house restaurant sits in.

Sungei Buloh Wetland ReserveMarvel at the rare ecological wonderland that is the nearby Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, one of the few remaining mangrove areas in Singapore. The 202-hectare verdant forests, mangrove swamps, mudflats and ponds is abundant in wildlife like mudskippers and crabs. Avid birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts flock here for a glimpse of migratory birds such as herons and kingfishers. Complete the circuit through the stroller-friendly Coastal Trail or the rustic Forest Trail, both dotted with several bird-watching points which afford a peek across the Causeway to Johor, Malaysia.

There’s more to Seoul than K-Pop and kimchi. The bustling capital ofSouth Korea, built among four guardian mountains, is steeped in traditionyet at the forefront of many exciting innovations. Joyce Kim, Assistant Guest Service Manager at Somerset Palace Seoul, lets us in on some of the city’s unmissable locales.

What do you love most about the city? The great Han River runs through the entire city flowing from east to west. This popular river is accessible from many parts of Seoul and its banks are popular places for outdoor and recreational activities. It’s a great place for me to relax.

Any tips for travellers to make the most of their day in the city? I would recommend them to buy a City Tour Bus ticket. The city tour buses offer several routes and stop at famous tourist attractions. The all-day ticket provides unlimited rides for one day.

When is the best time to visit, and why? There’s something happening in Seoul all year round. The weather is mild and travel expenses are low from March to June and from September to November. You will want to visit from December to February for the winter activities. In July and August, there will be vibrant festivals taking place.

What’s the most underrated experience or activity? Wearing the traditional national costume, the Hanbok, and touring Seoul’s palaces will be a lasting memory. These activities are increasingly popular among locals as well as foreigners particularly young women and girls.

What are some of the outdoor options for nature lovers? Seoul is famous for the four mountains which dominate the city centre, and so a

popular weekend activity among nature lovers is mountain climbing. The mountain trails are well-maintained and the summits of these mountains are not very high, so it is possible to climb up to a good vantage point within 30 or 40 minutes to enjoy a panoramic view of Seoul. Bukhansan National Park is the closest to the city and very easy to access.

What are some of the popular nightlife areas frequented by locals? The Hongdae area is widely known as the mecca of club culture in Seoul. There are various clubs, such as dance clubs where you can get into the rhythm of exciting music and dance, as well as live performance clubs that offer music of different genres, from jazz to indie. At night, free open-air performances by indie bands are often held in playgrounds or in vacant lots for everyone to enjoy.

If Seoul can be represented in a dish, what would it be and why? I would say Bulgogi, which is grilled beef marinated in soy sauce, as it is one of the most popular dishes among locals and foreigners alike. It is served sizzling on a hot plate, eaten with steamed rice and gravy, and washed down with soju, our most popular alcoholic beverage

Rep UpBelieve it or not, you can travel the world and stay on track with your diet and fitness goals — even if you’d rather be exploring a new city and the local cuisine instead of the gym. To go the distance and keep holiday weight gain at bay, all you need is a little discipline and these metabolism boosting tips

We do practically everything with smartphones these days, so why not download apps to help you keep to your fitness and diet regime while you’re on the go? Calorie and diet tracking app MyFitnessPal comes in handy when you want to enjoy local delicacies but still keep track of your dietary intake. With nutritional data of over 600 types of food stored in its database, the app comprehensively breaks down just how much protein, fat and carbs you’re consuming, and suggests calorie intake plans for you, depending on whether you want to gain, lose or maintain weight over a specific timeframe.

It’s been proven that sun exposure and exercise are key in getting rid of jetlag. Get going with the Strava app, which tracks your runs and rides with GPS, shows you your friends’ progress and how you stack up against them. Its Segment Explorer function crowdsources the most popular routes in major cities, from Melbourne and Milan to Sao Paulo and Sydney.

All you need to keep fit on your travels is a smartphone or a laptop, Wi-Fi and a YouTube fitness personality. No fancy equipment required.

Burn those calories with an upbeat POP Pilates routine on the Blogilates channel. Run by husband and wife duo Daniel and Kelli, the channel’s myriad of workouts encompasses everything from HIIT training to targeted programs like injury rehabilitation, and requires as little as five minutes of your day. A healthy, hearty breakfast helps to kickstart your metabolism and keeps your energy levels high for the rest of the day. Whether you’re making a beeline for the hotel breakfast buffet or stocking up your hotel with bites from the local grocery store, ensure you’re having a mix of complex carbs and lean protein in your power breakfast to keep you full longer. Steel cut oats, yoghurt, eggs, wholemeal bread and fruits are fail-safe nutritious options. If you’re heading out, use the AroundMe app to help scour the area for healthier-option restaurants. If you’re doing a quick search on user-contributed review sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor, refine your search with keywords like ‘gluten-free’ and ‘restaurant’ in the city.

Never mind if you’d rather skip that gym session. With some prudent pre-trip planning, you can work out in the comfort of your room. Take a yoga mat, resistance bands or a skipping rope. All these don’t take up much room in your suitcase, but pack a punch when it comes to keeping you on track with your fitness goals.

To boost energy levels after a long flight, what you take in your carry-on bag can go a long way. Don’t forget nutritious travel-friendly snacks like blueberries, edamame and nuts, which keep you satiated so you’re not tempted to munch on another pack of salt-laden peanuts onboard. Slip a Pilates stretch band in your carry-on too — a few minutes of stretching exercises on the plane massages internal organs and improves circulation. It barely takes up any space in your carry-on and you don’t wind up lethargic and sore after a long haul flight. Win-win.

The pioneer of farm-to-table dining in Thailand is housed in a charming 100-year-old Thai Villa, surrounded by a lush garden where aromatic Thai herbs are grown all year round. It’s from this garden that Chef Ian Kittichai gets some of his ingredients for his inventive approach to Thai cooking at Issaya, which means ‘rainy season’ in Thai. What’s not produced from the gardens is sourced from local growers. The celebrity chef (of Iron Chef Thailand fame) melds traditional Thai flavours with cooking techniques that push boundaries. The end result is specialties like Mussuman Curry Lamb Shank (Mussuman Gae) and Jasmine Flower Flan (Kanom Dok Mali) — and its #19 spot on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

This buzzy mega-café, which takes paddock-to-plate dining to the next level, is an institution in Sydney. The menu brims with honest-to-goodness dishes boasting the freshest organic produce and will leave you spoilt for choice. How can you say no to a hearty beef skillet pie or a waistline-friendly quinoa and beetroot salad? These folks are undoubtedly coffee gurus (the grounds on which it derives its name) so don’t leave until you’ve had a cuppa or have had a glimpse of its coffee testing and research facility. Housed in a converted pie factory, the rustic industrial-chic eatery spills into to a sprawling garden where some of its ingredients are harvested. Fashion FlyersAirport essentials have changed as millions of travelers share photos of their trips on social media. We spoke to two frequent travelers in the Singapore fashion industry to find out how they travel in style.

How often do you travel for work and leisure? I usually go for two long trips a year, for about six weeks long each time. In between, I make shorter trips to visit familiar cities when I need to recharge and basically do nothing.

What are some of your favourite destinations in the world, why? I frequent Tokyo for work and leisure and I love the shopping there. Japanese fashion is known for their cuts and unique designs. For example, Isetan department stores have a wide range of designer menswear with cuts that are suitable for Asian men. Comme des Garcons would have to be one of my favourite labels. Another favourite city is Bangkok, which has all the things I love – coffee, food, massage and shopping at affordable prices. For a culture-rich experience, Turkey is possibly one of the most vibrant and unique countries I’ve been to, with so many different cultures and adventures to explore in the different cities.

Are there any outfits or bags that you have to take along on your trips? What are they and why? I need to bring my backpack. I prefer to travel “hands

free”, so I can take pictures with ease and throw all my shopping items in my bag (go green!) and therefore a backpack works perfectly for me! Being comfortable is very important. I’m not too adventurous in terms of my fashion choices, but I do like to have a signature piece or an item with a twist, such as printed shoes with an all-black outfit.

How would you describe your travel style? I must say I am pretty chill when I travel. I don’t really plan my itinerary in detail apart from accommodation. In fact I prefer not to stick to a daily itinerary and decide on that day depending on the weather, mood and whether there are festivals or exhibitions going on. I rely very heavily on travel apps such as Tripadvisor for where to visit and dine as well as Google Maps and Uber for commuting.

Any secret shops or spots around the world that you’d like to share with us? With social media taking over a big part of our life, I don’t think there’s anything that is a “secret” around the world now!

As co-founder of online fashion retailer Love, Bonito, what does your work entail? I head the back end operations of Love, Bonito which includes the finance department, operations, IT, business intelligence as well as the business development teams. I oversee the business expansion plans therefore I frequent the countries of which Love, Bonito has a foothold in, like Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia.

What are some of your favourite destinations in the world? Iceland is one of the most unforgettable holidays I have taken and I will go back there in a heartbeat. For short getaways, I always fall back on Japan and will make it a point to visit a different city each time. I also love Europe if I can spare a good ten days to roam around.

Are there any outfits or bags that you have to take along on your trips? I like my Amazon Kelly 35 in Rouge Casaque and will bring it along on holidays as it is roomy and it matches most of my outfits. The red is a great pop of colour in contrast to the darker fall colours I like to wear. For work, I rely a lot on my Louis Vuitton Mahina XL because I can throw my Macbook, a book, portable charger, makeup pochette, basically everything in that one bag. It is great for short work trips. Outfits will vary with the seasons but I always have classic silhouettes like a sharp looking jumpsuit with me.

How would you describe your travel style? I usually cannot pack light even though I would secretly love to, because toiletries are extremely important to me. I will always bring my own skincare and hair care products. I have extremely sensitive skin after all that travelling for work and having to acclimatize to the different weather conditions so a lot of the products I use are customized.

Ironically, it is now much easier to pack for work as I have a go-bag to cater to my short work trips. Being in the fashion industry, we tend to not conform to business suits and my travel bag will consist of the latest collection of Love, Bonito apparel.

Any secret shops or spots around the world that you’d like to share with us? I generally avoid malls and touristy stretches. Farmers’ markets really appeal to me. The most interesting by far was when I got my first knife together with an engraving, in a shop in Kyoto.

HOLI FESTIVALBe prepared to be transformed into a walking rainbow of sorts. Celebrated with much fervour at the start of spring, the Holi festival sees a riot of colourful scenes erupt throughout India and is quite rightly known as the Festival of Colours for good reason. Festivities begin on the eve of Holi close to midnight with the lighting of bonfires. The main highlight takes place on Holi’s final day when everyone takes to the streets throwing coloured powder and dyed water. These harmless tools of combat are traditionally made with medicinal herbs like neem, haldi and bilva, and the activity is meant to show devotion and respect to deities, friends and family members. From city streets to rural villages, there are plenty of opportunities to be a part of this merriment, which traditionally celebrates the victory of good over evil.

When: 13 March, 2017 Where: Most cities and rural areas in India

Making a MessGetting dirty has never been so much fun and socially acceptable. In fact, it’s the name of the game at some of these popular festivals. Stow away your best summer getup and brace yourself for a messy good time.

Holi is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm around the world. Wherever you may be in March, look for a brightly-hued event near you.

LA TOMATINA One of the world’s biggest food fights, La Tomatina literally paints the town red – with squashed tomatoes. While the origin of the festival is uncertain, this tradition that started in 1945 involving the pelting of tomatoes at one another has attracted so many people that town officials started to introduce an entry fee and a cap on the number of participants from 2013 onwards. Revellers usually come armed with goggles for protection and end up waddling in a sea of tomato pulp that’s knee-deep.

When: 30 August 2017 Where: Buñol town in Valencia Province, Spain

INTERNATIONAL PILLOW FIGHT DAY Who says pillow fights are just for children? Yes, there is a day dedicated to pillow fighting where you get to relive your childhood dream. Raise your fluffiest pillows, bolsters and duvets and ruffle some feathers in a massive street combat with random strangers. Inspired by the film Fight Club, massive, organised pillow fights in the form of “flash mobs” started to gain popularity and scale with the help of social networking sites. Now, this friendly and harmless combat takes place in more than 100 cities all over the world each year, from Hungary to Taipei to Vienna. Seems like no one’s taking it lightly.

When: 1 April, 2017 Where: Major cities around the world, or organise your own featherweight bout!

BORYEONG MUD FESTIVAL Join in the muddy madness and slather yourself in mineral-rich mud at South Korea’s most popular summer festival, which began in 1998 as a marketing move to promote the beneficial effects of the local mud at Boryeong mud flats. Now, millions of people descend upon Daecheon Beach to enjoy an array of mud-themed events over a 10-day period, including mud sliding, mud wrestling, mud massages, and even a mud boot camp. Beyond the mud fest, the event also features an impressive entertainment line up of international hip hop and pop acts as well as a spectacular fireworks display.
