Madeira carnival festivities
Every year, the municipality of Santana marks with great enthusiasm,
the beginning of the Carnival Festivities in the Region with it´s traditional
“Compadres” Festival. An event with more than 50 years, where humour
and social satire are the two main ingredients, known for its originality,
with fun and giant characters who walk through the main local streets, in
a parade full of colour and joy.
This year, the festivities take off on February 20th with the “Quinta
das Comadres” and “Quinta dos Compadres”, followed by the “Compadres
Festival” and the ethnographic and fun parades. The celebrations’
highlight is the public judgment of the “Compadres” and “Comadres”, who
are accused of infidelities and other sins and end up being publicly burnt
in a traditional ritual. On the 27th of March and closing these festivities
in the north part of the island, is held the “Revenge of the Compadres”,
driving all the attention now towards the city of Funchal, with its Carnival
Celebrations from February 26 to March 5. This year the great allegoric
parade, as always, brings to the streets of Funchal, on first Saturday of
the month, hundreds of participants in various carnival troupes, locals and
visitors. On February 4, Shrove Tuesday Day, it’s time for the fun parade,
also in downtown Funchal. An event that clearly highlights our popular
roots, mixed with social satire, entertainment and lots of good mood.
