• Followed by 60 day comment period• EC to review the comments, then publish the
final regulation in Canada Gazette Part 2• Not happened yet• Regulation enforcement date for markings sub
category will be two to three years after the publication date

• Low VOC paint products– Oil based with Acetone reducer– Advantages
• Can be applied in cooler temperatures• No equipment modifications
– Disadvantages• More volatile• Poor bead retention indicated to date

• Presently being used throughout Ontario• Equipment modifications completed by most
applicators• Increased bead retention
– Disadvantages• Long dry times in cold weather • Poor performance when applied in cooler
temperatures

• Products are being evaluated by MTO and Municipalities
• Spray Methyl Methacrylate– Approved by MTO as cold weather application
product– Tested in several Municipalities for
performance as a spray durable

ORANGE TEMPORARY MARKINGS IN CONSTRUCTION
ZONES• First tested by the 407 Hwy. in Summer of 2006,
Paint• Tested that fall by MTO on HWY. 406 two lane,
failed application • Written into a contract on 427 ,concrete and
asphalt in 2007,8 – Product was specified as Spray methyl Methacrylate
orange florescent – Orange paint was applied in 2008 on 401
asphalt,

• MTO has developed a Non Standard Special Provision for– Divided roadway situations( same direction)– Temporary work zone markings– All edge and lane lines in work zones– The use of spray MMA

• Central Region contracts will include orange markings in 2009
• Currently only one product approved• High cost of material application is restricting
use of the product• Testing three new fluorescent orange products
– Solvent based paint– Water-Borne paint – Another MMA

• All pavement markings are required to be manufactured free from lead after December 31 , 2010
