Andacht Devotion

Fürchte dich nicht! Rede nur, schweige nicht!

Denn ich bin mit dir. Apg. 18,9-10

vertrauen. Gott will auch bei uns “Wohnung machen.” Sind wir

bereit ihn anzunehmen? Irmela Engelbrecht

Do not be afraid, but keep on speaking and do not give up, for I

am with you. Acts 18, 9-10

Paul went from Athens to Corinth where he spread the Gospel and

converted many people. One night Paul had a vision in which the

Lord said to him: “Do not be afraid, but keep on speaking and do

not give up, for I am with you. No one will dare to harm you .”

The Jews, however, claimed that Paul was trying to persuade the

people to worship God in a way that was against the law. A hearing

was held and the people grabbed the leader of the synagogue and beat

him up. Paul remained unscathed as God had promised and could

carry on spreading the word of God.

God with us – that is the wonder of Pentecost! This not only hap-

pened a long time ago in the Temple, but happens wherever people

are mindful of God’s word and put their trust in God. God also wants

to be with us. Are we prepared to accept him?

Der erste Posaunenchor The very first Brass Band

The very first Brass Band

A condensed version of a report from an 1877 Hermannsburg (Germany) Mission newslet-

ter.

Pastor Theodor Harms was tutor to the children on the estate of a Danish count in 1848.

The Germans looked down on the Danish people in those days. When the county was at-

tacked, Theodor Harms decided to guard the property with his students. Standing guard can

become very monotonous and tiresome; so they had the idea of learnung to play brass instru-

ments while doing their watch. The gamekeeper knew that there were brass instruments

stored somewhere, and if they could find them, they could use them to while the time away.

Permission was granted to use the instruments. which were old, dusty and buckled, but

usable. They also managed to find a teacher who could instruct them.

Soon afterwards Theodor was called into the Hermannsburg Mission by his brother

Louis Harms. Here he could now teach the students to play on brass instruments which were

kindly lent or donated to them. Due to lack of space at the Mission House they often had to

practice in the same room simultaneously. The noise was often deafening!

One day rats invaded a house in the neighbourhood. When Pastor Harms heard this, he

sent his students to practice there and – all the rats disappeared! To quote Theodor Harms:

“I can recommend even bad music; for chasing away rats.”

This is how the first brass band started.

Confirmation Jubilee

Konfirmationsjubiläum

Matthew 10:32-33 Jesus said:

"Everyone therefore who acknowledges me

before others, I also will acknowledge be-

fore my Father in heaven; but whoever de-

nies me before others, I also will deny be-

fore my Father in heaven.”

Matthäus 10,32-33 Jesus sprach:

“Wer nun mich bekennt vor den

Menschen, den will ich auch bekennen vor

meinem himmlischen Vater. Wer mich

Dear sisters and brothers,

It is important for us to daily renew our Christian commitment and to

confess our faith in Jesus Christ again and again. But this renewal

also happens at our Confirmation anniversaries.

We have planned the Jubilee Confirmation in our congregation for

Sunday 15 September 2013 at 08.00 in the Church of the Cross as a

combined Communion Service.

We invite all members who have been confirmed 50, 60, 70 (or 80?)

years ago in other congregations to celebrate with us. Please contact

our secretary, Ms Margrit Roussos, that we can acknowledge your

presence and know who is coming.

As our congregations in Pietermaritzburg (including Cato Ridge) and

Bishopstowe began some 100 years ago, we want to remember all

those who were confirmed here 100, 90, 80, 70, 60 and 50 years ago.

Off course, many of the older ones have passed away, but members

of their families might like to remember them once more.

We kindly request congregation members to help us locate and con-

tact those who are still alive to invite them to this special day, so that

we can celebrate the day with them.

From Council Dear Congregation

On Saturday 8 June 2013 we had the honour of celebrating

Tante Marilly Düvel’s 99th birthday with her.

She remains to be an inspiration to all of us!

I had the pleasure of joining our congregations Howick service

It is always a pleasure to join them and they always make you

feel welcome.

We thank all involved who make these

services possible and wish them God’s

blessing.

Here are a few pictures with one of the

organists, Eckhard Rembold and the service

helpers Irma Lilje and Camilla Bourquin.

This and that

THE KENOSIS KIDS COME TO TOWN

The Kenosis Kids! Who are they and where did they come from?

Ah, my brother. You missed a great show on Saturday afternoon at

the Lutheran Centre. Not only do they have a pianist who beats out

our National Anthem (in three languages nogal) without a single pi-

ano note in front of him; but they also have two little angels who

tweeted like robins, and they produced a short play with a message to

keep you on the straight and narrow......and wait for it: they brought

along nine little dancers who high-kicked to the rhythm of a base

drum which made the Folies Bergiére look like a bunch of amateurs.

Yes bra – you missed something! SEDrewes

Do you love music?

Can you play an instrument?

Do you like to sing?

Do you want to learn to play an instrument?

Our music groups – Worship Team, Choir, Brass Band, Organists – are always

on the look-out for new friends to join them. Don’t be shy!

Participating will bring you great joy and fellowship.

GREEN PAGE

Some tips on gardening, mostly from ‘Going Green’, by

Simon Gear:

Be bird-friendly, but think twice about regularly

feeding birds (or any wild animals). What happens is that

certain local bird populations increase at the expense of oth-

ers and tend to become pests. Rather have lots of food

plants for birds in your garden, and feed them only occasion-

ally, with different types of foods.

Water your plants only when they need it: Don’t use a timer to

water them regularly, rain or shine. How many of them are adapted

to an environment where it rains every day??? It is totally unnatu-

ral. Water less often but then more thoroughly.

Try waterwise gardening: Use separate parts of the garden

for plants according to how much water they need – e g don’t plant

Aloes and Petunias together!

Try drip irrigation instead of sprays: You will use far less wa-

ter by evaporation. Leave it to nature to provide the odd

shower.

Plant an Acacia karroo (Sweet Thorn): It is a tough tree that

has adapted to grow all over South Africa. It is drought resis-

tant and and attracts all manner of butterflies and birds and is

most attractive when in flower – masses of golden yellow puff balls

at the end of summer.

Avoid large areas of lawn (unless your growing kids need it):

Your lawn is by far the thirstiest part of your garden.

“I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic

of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Na-

ture, not her truculent, wife-beating master. I think the true gar-

dener, the older he grows, should more and more develop a humble,

grateful and uncertain spirit.” Reginald Farrer, English botanist,

1880 - 1920
