Dear Readers,

Employability skill among graduates in India is

an issue that is currently being debated and

discussed in the various fora. With educational

institutions multiplying at an astounding rate,

the questions that arise are - is quality is being

compromised for quantity? Are educational

reason for this mismatch? Attempting to

address some of these questions, the theme

I have attended a significant number of workshops and meetings

discussing management education in the past six months.

Invariably, most of these have focused on the need for b-schools

to impart 'soft skills' to the students. Most speakers mention the

low percentage of 'employable' MBA and Engineering graduates.

Soft skills, they say, would include communication skills too.

I am not certain if we need to look at the issue from a different

perspective. I strongly believe that any b-school should maintain

its academic rigour and should make sure that the students imbibe

a strong foundation of theoretical concepts and principles. Too

much 'practice-orientation' at the cost of academic rigour would

prove counter-productive. Our primary responsibility is to make

our students gain analytical and reasoning skills, leadership skills,

and creative skills. Self confidence, self awareness, social

awareness, and ability to work in uncertain and complex

environment are some of the skills that our students should

acquire during their MBA education.

I am glad that we, at GRGSMS, are tailoring

our curriculum and courseware to meet the

expectations of our stakeholders. After all, we

have been nurturing business leaders since
