Coral/Zooxanthellae

• Coral Bleaching• Reef Making • Zooxanthellae- Tiny autotrophic protozoa with

flagellum that provide energy to many marine species, such as coral. They are essential to their growth and structure, and the processes above.

• The background shows Zooxanthellae as seen though a microscope.

Coral Bleaching• An example of coral bleaching can be seen in

the coral on the right side of the picture. This phenomena results from a deficiency of zooxanthellae in the coral. If nothing changes, the bleached coral will die.

Reef making

• Due to the fact that Zooxanthellae can provide up to 90% of the coral’s energy requirements, Zooxanthellae are essential to corals’ growth.

• Since Zooxanthellae can only live and thrive in certain conditions, Coral reefs are limited to regions that fit the requirements of the Zooxanthellae.

Importance of Malaria• In 2011 it was estimated By the W.H.O. (World

Health Organization), that there are 300-500 million cases and 700,000-800,000 deaths per year. These numbers might be low due to the fact that not everyone seeks help.

• Understanding how Plasmodium lives is helping the development of drugs that can stop its fundamental workings.
